Spots again

The Independent UK has reported that after two decades the stars behind British film Trainspotting are set to return for a sequel, as the characters face a mid-life crisis. Rumours of a sequel have circulated since Irvine Welsh, the writer of the original Trainspotting novel, wrote a follow up, Porno, in 2002. Director Danny Boyle said a script is in progress, and the plan is to release the film in 2016, on the 20th anniversary of the original. “This has been a long time coming,” Boyle told Canadian film website The Playlist. “There’s always been this long term plan for Trainspotting 2.” He believes that the entire cast could be reassembled including the original’s star Ewan McGregor. “I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back,” the director said.

gig OF THE WEEK

KNOX CHURCH

MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE

7PM, $70, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

7PM, $88, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

Aussie rocker Paul Kelly has added three new concert dates to his New Zealand tour this March. The multiaward-winning, critically revered songwriter will make his way through his long-standing catalogue – of 19 studio albums – accompanied by his nephew Dan Kelly (also on guitar) and supported by Lydia Cole.

With a recording career spanning 40 years, Joan Armatrading has been a formidable force in the industry. The first UK female singer songwriter to have international success, she possesses an entirely unique sound that ranges from jazz to true soul to sophisticated pop and reggae, which is all tied together and driven by her passionate guitar.

TSB SHOWPLACE, NEW PLYMOUTH 7PM 7.30PM, $65, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Sad to say it, but summer is drawing to an end, so it’s time to serenade the season with Tahuna Breaks. Their third album Shadow Light is a result of two years and hundreds of hours experimenting and perfecting a dance-orientated funk-soul sound. Get your groove on to their future hits and classic beats.

THU 21 MAR

Born one of seven children, the US singer has never been one for convention. His breakthrough single ‘Polk Salad Annie’ introduced the world to his brand of “swampy country soul” and became a world-wide hit. The last few years have seen a critical re-evaluation of his work, accompanied by his album of duets with country superstars.

The trombone player has never made playing a brass instrument look so sexy and if he wasn’t near 70, he might be my type.

Multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey is bringing his tried and tested live trio (Mick, Rosie Westbrook, JP Shiloh) to our shores with the sole purpose of shaking out some demons from his latest work Sketches From The Book Of The Dead – they are promising surprises so keep an eye on his sleeves, long or short!

For those of you who haven’t been introduced before, the DHDFD’s (rumored to mean “Don’t Have Dogs For Dinner”) are a four-piece New Zealand garage punk band, who formed in Point Chevalier. Their live shows have drawn acclaim and controversy with anarchy and chaos in their performances, in true punk style.

TUE 26 MAR THE JACKSONS VECTOR ARENA

7PM, $89, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito Jackson are thrilled to be returning to Australasia after nearly 30 years to pay tribute to their late brother Michael. Beloved by millions of fans, the Jacksons first achieved international superstardom in the 1960s, the first group ever to have four singles hit #1 on the Billboard Charts.

It’s been 33 years since his death, but the grave can’t stop Jimi from releasing yet another studio album.

of fiesty rock music and casually lobbing it through the window of your ears.

People, Hell And Angels holds twelve... um... sorta new tracks. New in the sense that this is the first time these versions of the songs have been released. However, there are other cuts of said tracks already out there in the muso-sphere.

And naturally, the blues vibe is strong across the whole album. Jimi rips into ‘Bleeding Heart’ like a wolf into a slab of meat, cranking up the bluesy growl and sounding like he’s having an absolute blast while doing it. ‘Hear My Train A Comin’ is more of the same, with some surgeon-like solo-work from Hendrix, tempered by the cool playing of both Cox and Miles.

There’s nothing revelatory on the album, but you do get an idea of what Jimi’s direction might have been had he survived past that magical age of 27. What you really get here is stone-cold confirmation (Not that it’s necessary) of James Marshall Hendrix’s almost meta-human ability to play guitar. It’s beyond amazing what he could do with a Fender in his hands. It was - in the old-testament sense of the word RIGHTEOUS. You also get a taste of Jimi and his fellow, “band of Gypsy’s” ability to turn a freewheelin’ jam into something significant. It’s a beautiful thing to hear Jimi, plus his band compadre’s, Billy Cox (Bass) and Buddy Miles (Drums), work their mojo in Hendrix’s own Electric Lady Studios (Along with others). There’s a supremely fluid feel to what they laid down during these sessions, which occurred following the release of the iconic Electric Ladyland. Opener, ‘Let Me Move You’ sets the tone: with guitar, bass, drums, sax (From Lonnie Youngblood, the “Prince Of Harlem”) mixing a molotov cocktail

Okay, so the album itself can feel disjointed and ‘bitsy’ thanks to the pulled together and unfinished nature of what’s on show. But that’s just the way the cheese grates, and it’s hard not to feel the sense of fun here, not to mention talent, highlighted by some spot-on production and a glorious lack of overdubs. This isn’t the definitive Hendrix but that’s okay, we’ve got tons of that already. This is like sitting in the room with him and hearing a casual session first-hand. WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN

And Jared Leto. Wait and the boys from ‘Enter Shikari’. Not a fair question... Kittens or puppies? Full grown bad ass dogs!

What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi? You get sent to the fiery pits of hell, because Coca Cola is a far superior drink (plus my sister works for Coke so I get paid to say that).

THE RED HOUSE

PRIME, 9.30PM

He was the voice behind one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Freddie Mercury was a character – his flamboyant public persona a far cry from the private struggle he was dealing with. This doco uses extensive archive footage of interviews concerts, video shoots and personal material.

THU 21 MAR

directed by ALYX DUNCAN

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER GENERAL RELEASE

In a time where fairytales are fodder to be used, reused and remade over and over again, this latest release focuses on Jack and the Beanstalk. Kid actor-turnedstar Nicholas Hoult leads an all-star cast through this updated flick that’s filled with romance, giants, some PG-rated fight scenes and even a bit of comedy.

HELL AND BACK AGAIN RIALTO CHANNEL, 8.30PM

This doco is a candid portrayal of the war in Afghanistan and its effect on one soldier. During the summer of 2009, Harris and his platoon were in Helmand Province, but after he sustained a severe injury to his hip, director Danfung Dennis decided to document his recovery back home in North Carolina.

Starring LEE STUART, MENG JIA

Alyx Duncan’s gracefully assured debut feature The Red House is not just one of the best films about cross-cultural romances I’ve seen in a while, it’s also one of the most deeply romantic – period. Casting her real-life 60-something parents, Lee Stuart and Meng Jia, at the centre of this fictionalised story, Duncan captures an unspoken closeness between two people that cannot be manufactured through performance. There’s something pure and human about their unaffected presence that allows us to understand – or more so, feel – their bond, and see how they’ve been able to overcome social barriers such as language and culture over the years. The sliver of a narrative – Jia returning to China to care for her ailing parents, while Lee, an environmental activist, joins her later – is expounded

with hushed intimacy as the pair, often in voiceover, ruminate on their relationship. Shot over a period of three years, the exquisite cinematography – credited to four different people, including Duncan herself – impresses in its unity of vision. From the comforting, tuckedaway idyll of their home in the Hauraki Gulf to the hypnotic, Edward Burtynsky-esque otherworldliness of noisy industrial development in China, Duncan demonstrates a seasoned documentarian’s eye for place and detail. Modest, meditative and rewarding in a way that Kiwi films rarely are, The Red House pulls the viewer into a world where love and landscape collide in a constant state of flux, negotiation and mystery. BARS

Shit worth dRINKING

LENIN PRINCESS WHARF, 201 QUAY ST

If there is one thing the Russians know to do well, it’s vodka. Lots of vodka. For a taste of the best of the best, head to Lenin Bar. There’s great atmosphere, plenty of cocktail options (with vodka, of course), wine, beer and spirits, and good local DJs. Can we fit another shout out to vodka in here?

THE SNOWLINE LOUNGE TERRACE ROAD, MOUNT COOK

Take the opportunity to relax and unwind after an adventurous day in the park. Curl up by the open logfire, or sit back and take in the majestic view of the Southern Alps. The Snowline Lounge at The Hermitage Hotel serves all your favourite cocktails, as well.

MIGHTY MIGHTY

The place where they confess you have “license to spaz”, Mighty Mighty is one almighty place where everything and anything can and will happen. Think anything with extra zing, with real talent or just a bucket load of old fashioned fun. Or maybe you’d like to come in early to chill out in the warm ambience, amongst palm trees, curious decor, fuchsia pink curtains and pinball! No kidding, it’s that kind of place –a place where creativity and imagination fuse into one. If you want a taste of the creative culture in Wellington pop in, who knows what you’ll get.

Grandmaster Flash, the Grammy nominated and award winning Rock ’n’ Roll hall of fame inductee is headlining Our:House presents Nite:Life on Thu 28 Mar. He’ll be joined by international acts; Hardrock Sofa, Helena as well as national acts Optimus Gryme, Jupiter Project, Tim Phin, Weird Together and General Lee among many others. Nite:Life is bringing back the ‘all night party’, a celebration of everything loveable about the dance scene and ‘[is] a smorgasbord of great dance music at one of Auckland’s most epic multi room venues’ the Ellerslie Events Centre. Headliner, Grandmaster Flash, is one of the few names in hip-hop (in its nearly 30 year history) that has become well known amongst music lovers across the world. He is partly responsible for inventing hip-hop and pioneered the use of turntables as a musical instrument, being the first DJ to use them as such. Coming out of the Bronx, Grandmaster Flash began with an early love for vinyl that came to ahead when he began studying DJ Kool Herc, who would become one of his main influences (following his father). From this point, the only way Grandmaster Flash knew, was forward, and he moved onto develop the use of the turntable. This including scientifically inventing and demonstrating the ‘Quick Mix Theory’ and ultimately elevating turntables into a great form. As one of the three creators of hip-hop, Flash recorded his unique sound and then, in 1977, six years after he helped begin the genre, Flash moved onto collaborating and experimenting with the local MCs. This led to what would eventually become Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who would release their first album in 1981.

have released multi million selling albums and songs and after the groups demise, Flash went on to carve out a career as a soloist. Part of this career earned him TV credits in the HBO series, Everybody Hates Chris, where he was recruited by Chris Rock to be the musical director. It did, however, go on to span a personal mixer, the Grandmaster Flash Signature Empath and the closing of the commonwealth games in Manchester (2002) where he performed in front of then Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Queen herself. Flash’s career has earned him (alongside many more awards) a street named after him in New York, a plaque at 161st street, part of the Bronx walk of fame and Source Magazine’s Pioneer Award. Of those joining him at the all night party; the Russian duet Hardrock Sofa have cemented themselves as proof that Russian house music is not as thing of the imagination. Australia’s Helena is the female genius who ‘puts the magic where it’s meant to be, in the music’. They will be supported by the very best of New Zealand’s dance producers and DJs, including Jet Ski Safari, Jupiter Project, Optimus Gryme, Tim Phin, Weird Together, The Nark Collective, Aural Trash, CTFD, Mc Tali, Mayavanya, General Lee, Dan Aux, Stack & Piece, Jaycen A’mour, Rich Carey, Jarrod Phillips, Danny G - plus the winner of the upcoming Superstar DJ competition. While most other venues will be shutting at midnight due to Easter trading, this party will pump ‘til the break of dawn! While the game doesn’t launch with the franchise’s expected sense of epicness, it doesn’t take long for Ascension to start delivering the satisfying brutal hack and bloody slash that we’ve all grown to love. The polished controls of the series are still pleasingly intact and the combat, which is the majority of the game, is still the highlight. The ‘all-new’ Blades of Chaos imbibe different powers as you progress; for example, the Fire of Ares makes a crispy barbecue of your foes, while the Ice of Poseidon freezes them. Further down the line, you’ll get to add on the Lightning of Zeus that produces a satisfying electric-shock to every attack and the Soul of Hades even gets the undead in on the action.

Through the God of War series, we’ve formed a strong bond with Kratos. Whether he was stabbing a mindless cyclops in the eye, pulling out the brains of sad minotaurs, or shaking his fists at the gods from a distance, we felt his cause was a worthy one. Now that we all know how his story ends, we find out how it began - with Ascension.

By Umbra

In typical GoW fashion, there are times when the difficulty ramps up to almost nightmare status. Challenging gameplay is welcome but here it feels more like a frustrating oversight, when compared to the overall difficulty curve. On the surface, multiplayer is pretty simple. While there are a variety of modes on offer, they’re all largely based on concepts that are familiar to anyone who has ever played a multiplayer game. It’s in the layers on top of this that Ascension delivers something extra; an x-factor that delivers enough unique difference to make Ascension a worthy multiplayer experience. You run around suitably God of War-esque environments with a (non-Kratos) character who wields a lot of (Kratos-like) weaponry. You level up, capture flags, and - of course - eviscerate lots of similarly equipped player characters (and get whipped by same.) It lacks the balance and polish of the more mature online titles out there, but it’s doing something new, so it gets a free pass in that department this time around. A worthy - if not quite god-like - experience. WRITTEN BY ANGUS DEACON

SOUNDS IN THE SUN UNITEC MT ALBERT CAMPUS, AUCKLAND SAT 16 MAR

SAT 16 MAR

On Saturday Unitec held the annual Sounds in the Sun at their Mount Albert Campus, which has been the cornerstone of their Orientation since 2006. The all day event is the countries biggest orientation event with a line up consisting of some of NZ’s top acts including Katachafire, Tahuna Breaks, Pieter T, Ddub, Soloa Rosa and many more. The questionable weather didn’t stop the crowds from grooving, dancing and enjoying themselves all afternoon. Student President Ben Kevely says, “The line-up is filled with a number of high quality acts and this is what makes Sounds in the Sun really stand out from other Orientation events. The day is all about student engagement. Students get to come along, meet some of their classmates and encourage them to be a part of Unitec. It’s a fun place to be” There was a great festival vibe and included market stalls, food, a bar area, giveaways from various sponsors, a kid zone and even paintball. Stand out performances by Tahuna Breaks and Katchafire. Make sure you get along to Sounds in the Sun next year! Q&A’s with some of the acts to follow on Grooveguide.co.nz

ENCORE

Wouldn’t you know it? I’ve just fed, bathed and put them both down and I have 10 minutes before singer songwriter Joan Armatrading is scheduled to call. I’m half way through checking out her new album when my two year old wanders in brandishing a milk bottle demanding a top up. She becomes easily distracted by the music on the YouTube clip and plops herself right down in front of my laptop. Right then Joan calls. It’s 6.45 in the AM at her end. She’s up, scrubbed and dressed. It’s 7.45 in the PM here; I’m sitting amongst the dinner dishes and staring at my defiant toddler. “Very rock ‘n’ roll,” she acknowledges, suppressing laughter, “but you have to do what you have to do.” Whilst researching for this I became aware of what a private and shy, person Armatrading can be (ironic since I’m involuntarily sharing my private life with her). And, up front she warns me not to delve too deeply. “If I go quiet, you’ll know why.” Yet I can’t help noting how warm and generous she is. Perhaps she’s aware of my predicament. Perhaps it’s that confidence that comes with performance, being lost in the moment. “Yes, it’s funny, that I was painfully shy when I started out. I wanted to just write, initially. Not perform. I was encouraged into it, and I found that when I’m lost in the songs then I can have the confidence to perform them and really let it out.” I note that many of her lyrics are autobiographical, for a private person. “Sometimes. Every writer, be they jazz or heavy metal writes about relationships and love. We have to. But I’m not going to explain my lyrics or songs. The listeners have to interpret those for themselves”. As a shy, afro-headed waif with a big, deep and confident voice Armatrading hit the scene back in the early 70’s with ‘Love and Affection’, ‘Show Some Emotion’ and continued into the 80’s with ‘Me, Myself, I’, ‘Walk Under Ladders’ and ‘Drop the Pilot’. And although she may have faded from the AOR charts over recent years she’s still been prolifically clocking up 19 studio albums. The last three Into the Blues, This Charming Life and Starlight are impressive for two reasons. “I played all the instruments on those myself, because I had these ideas in my head and I wasn’t sure anyone else could understand what I was trying to do.” Also, each album had a particular style. “As you may know I like to write in different styles - blues, acoustic, rock, reggae, jazz. For Into the Blues I wanted to focus just on a blues style and tried hard not to veer off course. But once I go started it was easier to follow that course. And for This

Charming Life I had a pop theme going. I realised during the last one that I had a jazz theme to finish, so Starlight has a different feel again.” As a holder of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History I was expecting Armatrading to have a passionate understanding of the technical aspects of musicology. “I hated those exercises. I have always been a musically free thinker. I play what I want. If I start playing an A flat and hit a B sharp and it fits then I’ll keep my happy mistake. I don’t want rules restricting me. Music has this history, it references itself and you get to the point where it needs to sound like one thing to become something else.” One of the lines that best sums up Armatrading and her work is revealed in the single ‘Tell Me’ – “We can dare to be different/ but be different together.” “I was playing a show in Germany and there was a Gothic show down the road; all these kids in white face paint, black clothes and boots and outrageous hair. It occurred to me that in the unity to be different in society they were all conforming in their group. On a smaller scale we do that playing unusual sports that we discover everyone does or listening to a different band, that it turns out all our friends have. That’s what attracts us to our friends. We seek to be different with them.” The best example of this was when she toured 56 venues in the UK, with a new act in every town. At the end of the gig Armatrading got all the acts together to meet and record. “I noticed two things. Individually they were often shy - like me when I first started out. But when they were on stage they had the courage to change from introverted to extraverted. I also noticed that they were unique individuals when they were in there home towns but together as a group these different people were united. I like to have a variety and a mix of styles. And being different together is part of that.” About now I’m reminded of how different my two year old is. While I’ve found talking to Armatrading fascinating, my daughter has lost all interest and dropped off to sleep on the beanbag in the corner. Oh, well, it takes all sorts … WRITTEN BY Tim Gruar SEE HER LIVE: JOAN ARMATRADING WED 20 MAR MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE, WELLINGTON THU 21 MAR BRUCE MASON THEATRE, AUCKLAND
