ROMANCE LOST
After 12 years together, My Chemical Romance has called it quits. The announcement was made through their website last Friday. “Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We’ve gotten to go places we never knew we would. We’ve been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We’ve shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.”

Will Arnett has made a few hints about the upcoming fourth season of Arrested Development. Arnett, who plays Gob Bluth, said that the family had “kind of fallen apart” and that “Left to their own devices, all of these characters will evolve into the worst versions of themselves,” reports Us Weekly. The actor was speaking to the magazine at a recent event at SXSW in Austin, Texas and also gave insight into his own character’s development. “[Gob’s] got a new group of friends. He’s running with a pretty fast crowd. His fallback is always his illusions. Magic is who he is,” he said.

It’s quite a mouthful, but their genremashing has gained them an adoring following.

TOUR
Shadow Light is the third full-length album from Auckland septet Tahuna Breaks, and it’s been a lengthy fouryear wait for fans since the band’s last release – 2009’s Black, Brown & White. Claiming diverse influences from James Brown to Groove Armada, Tahuna Breaks have carved themselves a well-deserved place in the hearts of Kiwis young and old. The band has changed direction with Shadow Light, moving away from their reggae roots and towards a sound that is bigger, darker and heavier. This evolution is at least partially attributable to UK dance producers Crazy P, who became involved with the band after remixing their 2009 single ‘We Funk The Party’. Crazy P’s musical directorship even extended to refereeing on occasions when the band understandably struggled to align the diverse interests of its seven members. Mostly self-recorded, the album has been a long two years in the making, and delivers a new take on the Tahuna Breaks sound. Spanning funk, disco, soul, roots, and electronica, it combines elements from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and today into finger-snapping and eminently danceable funk. Marty Greentree’s vocals are rustic and soulful, delivering lyrics that are wistful and uplifting in equal measure; reliving past regrets and expounding general philosophical musings about love and life.
“rock ‘n’ roll and disco soul” on ‘Smooth’, the album claps its hands through a regrettably short eight tracks and two remixes. Standout tracks include the high-energy and housey transformation that Magik Johnson has crafted with ‘Moves’, and the trumpty and modern disco funk of opening track ‘Lady’. The moodily inspiring ‘Stars’ is a favourite, with its tinkly percussion and emotive guitars, as is the danceinspired first single ‘Fearless’. Shadow Light gets better the more times you listen and is a credible third effort from the Tahuna Breaks boys. My only real criticism is that it feels like they ran out of steam and released the album a few tracks short – perhaps this is one of the reasons fans have had to wait so long for its release. Nevertheless, the album is funky and disco-heavy, making it the perfect injection of funk for your gatherings. Just make sure they’re not too long. The album is in stores from Friday, March 22 and will be supported by a nationwide tour in April. WRITTEN BY PENNY HARRIS

TRANCE-LIK E STATE TH E N EW M O VI E BY D AN N Y BOYL E TA KE D EE PE ST, D AR S A LOO K AT KE ST RE CE SS TH E O F H U M AN U N CO N SC IOU SN ES S.
He started his Hollywood career in the mind-altering world of drugs, took a detour through Indian’s slums before putting the heart-wrenching true story of survival against the odds on our screens. Going back to where it all began, Oscar award-winning director Danny Boyle plays tricks with your mind in his latest offering Trance. Simon (Wanted’s James McAvoy) – a fine art auctioneer – teams up with a criminal gang to steal a Goya painting worth millions of dollars. After suffering a blow to the head during the heist, he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Franck (Vincent Cassel) hires hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb (Rosario Dawson) to delve into the darkest recesses of Simon’s psyche. As Elizabeth begins to unravel Simon’s broken subconscious, the line between truth, suggestion and deceit begin to blur. In tackling the material, Boyle saw a chance to update classic film noir themes – betrayal, moral uncertainty, sexual tension and the lurid instincts. He was also excited to bring a fresh take to

the iconic femme fatale, with the character of the beautiful hypnotherapist who proves to be every bit the equal of the men playing power games around her. “I wanted to try and update the whole noir idea. I wanted to occupy that world, but in a modern context.” Boyle explains. “At the same time, because the mind is such an interesting thing for film to explore, we wanted to do a little walk-about around all these big questions about consciousness and unconsciousness and which is in control. “You might think you’re in control of everything, but there are areas where you’re not. Some part of you knows, but your conscious mind doesn’t know what you’re even going to say next! That fascinates me.” As Boyle and screenwriter John Hodge began writing, they knew this story could not be constructed with a conventional, linear plot-line but demanded a kaleidoscopic structure revolving around the character of Simon. They plunged deep into the disoriented, broken mind of a character, who not only cannot remember where he left the stolen Goya but also has no idea what so
urgently impelled him to hide it in the first place.
College London, to act as the film’s consultant and expert.
“Danny and I wanted to have a kind of constant uncertainty for the characters as to what the truth is,” explains Hodge. “These three characters have to rely almost exclusively on what the others are saying or doing in order to figure out what’s going on.”
One important element of the film is that of post-hypnotic suggestions, which are suggestions given to a person while under hypnosis that they are expected to act upon when they are in a conscious state. The research into this idea made the trippy nature of the story even more exciting for the filmmakers, as they were challenged to bring audiences into the unpredictable mindscape of a hypnosis hyperresponder – that five per cent who are highly suggestible and can reach the deepest, most vulnerable states of trance –via Simon’s frightening and ultimately surprising experiences.
None of these characters are who or what they might seem at first meeting. These uniquely unreliable protagonists, each mired in the mysteries of identity, attraction and illusion, would require careful casting, but drew the kind of talented actors who hanker for complex roles right away. “That triangle is a lovely dynamic to have in place as you can play with the question of which character the story belongs to,” comments Boyle. “The film certainly starts as Simon’s story but by the end it has become more Franck’s – and Elizabeth exerts a strong gravitational pull of her own.”
Boyle says, “Our story is fictional but we wanted it to have a grounding in reality. While Elizabeth’s methods are not always ethical they are nonetheless clinically possible. For the five per cent of us who are highly suggestible – or ‘virtuosos’ as the experts say – that’s quite scary!”
To delve further into the power of hypnotic states, the production hired Professor David Oakley, a clinical psychologist and researcher at the University

I’m not sure I like Kerrigan. She’s a little disturbed. It seems there is no pleasing some people, lest of all the Queen of Blades. But maybe the fact that I don’t like her is an example of good characterisation, which is the mark of a good game, which means that... I like her. Curses! Damn you Blizzard! StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is a revenge flick in space-drag. The second installment in the StarCraft sequel series, its angst-filled emo death romp is sandwiched right between the testicular fortitude of 2010’s stunning Wings of Liberty, and the presumed grace of Legacy of the Void.

It’s this narrative set up that drives most of the new material that we are presented with in Heart of the Swarm. It’s not the most sophisticated of tales, but it provides a solid backdrop to Kerrigan’s quest to reunite the swarm and once again take the fight back to Mengsk.

The way you progress through Kerrigan’s missions feels slow and muddled. There are two reasons for this; the first is that this expansion pack is introducing players to a new alien race — and with it, a new gameplay experience. The second is that Heart of the Swarm introduces a range of new units to the single player campaign. Some take a little getting used to, and the ability to make tactical choices about upgrades means that there can be a confusing mix of stratagems going at any one time. What this results in is an early game that feels like handholding, and then an end game that lacks creativity, challenge, and depth of play. Stretched out over 20 missions, for experienced StarCraft players this is frustrating. However, this criticism can’t be taken too far. At its core, Heart of the Swarm is the same strategy experience that gamers fell in love with nearly 15 years ago. Heart of the Swarm does not quite reach the lofty heights of its parent title, but it’s a decent follow up and a worthy entry into the Starcraft canon. Blizzard’s ambitious mix of classic strategic gameplay, excellent multiplayer, and emotional characters with anger management issues has raised eyebrows, but Heart of the Swarm provides starcraft fans with exactly what they wanted — and still leaves room for more. NS UP U O P E A N TA S Y H C O N M D H OO D F TOR J IL D I R E C G H I S C H T Y. E O J I N I L GI K A A E AR TM A B OU It’s every little boy’s dream – sitting in your backyard, playing with your GI Joes, playing out the fairytale of saving the world over and over again. For director Jon M Chu, his dream became a reality, given the keys to a multimillion dollar project and creative license to create his own happy ending. “I was always obsessed [with GI Joe],” he explains. “I loved the first movie, but it wasn’t my GI Joe, the one that I grew up on, so when the opportunity came along [to direct the sequel], I jumped at it. I’m convinced I played with the toys so much that it’s where I fell in love with storytelling, with adventure, so this was a perfect full circle fit.” GI Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, picks up where we left off. This time, the team is not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra, but they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardise their very existence. After director Stephen Sommers stepped away from the helm, Chu–whose credits include Step Up 2 The Streets, Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – was brought in as a new set of eyes and with a refreshed vision to bring the story of GI Joe: Retaliation to the big screen. Having worked in dance and music movies his entire career, he was a rookie to the action scene. But having been such a big fan boy of the GI Joe world, he had specific goals in mind of where he wanted the story to go. “We’ve wanted you to feel the power of the punch, feel textures –the sand, dirt, sweat. We wanted to take the audience on a worldwide adventure – the way the cartoon took me as a kid and even the way the toys took me in my mind. But we also wanted to ground these guys, get down to what makes a hero.” Although it was a challenge to pick up where the previous flick left off, Chu says the writers
and he consulted with fans through social media to understand what they wanted to see. The informative sessions gave him affirmation for his direction and even affected decisions he made for the project. One of the biggest changes after the 70 days shoot wrapped was converting the flick to 3D. After previously deciding this wasn’t an option, producers changed their tune when they realised Chu’s direction of movement and depth of field lent itself perfectly to leap off the screen. “Our schedule was rushed, so I had to jump in and go. We thought the movie comes first, so if we can’t do 3D well, we won’t do it. But conversion is tough because it’s humans beings –it’s 700 artists, literally painting over 3,000 shots. You have to be present for six months and focused. So it was hard emotionally, physically, but my name was on the line so we wanted to do it right.”

Challenges aside, Chu says working on the project was “a dream come true” – especially working alongside heroes he had grown up with, such as The Rock and Bruce Willis. April 5 - 9 & April 16 - 19
“I had the best master class I could hope for. It was a team effort and it think it shows that each actor had their own thing going on. Getting Bruce and The Rock together, it was shocking – I would watch the monitor and forget that it was my movie. I’d be getting into the scene and then be like, ‘Oh shit, I mean cut, cut!’ My favourite bit was when we were filming with this big fish tank built behind them. It was like my childhood playing with my toy. I would pinch myself to be part of that tradition.”

Written in the Berwyn Mountains in North Wales and recorded in Brighton with Dan Smith and mixer Ken Thomas (David Bowie, Sigur Ros). For fans of The Cure, Joy Division, The Pixies and Arcade Fire.
His new album builds on the classic sound of his last record the Poet’s Embrace - but he’s gone even further with this one. Haines is singing two of his own tracks, with most of the album written in London last year.
Reznor’s trademark smoldering aggression is relegated to the realms of distortion-drenched backing vocals and Maandig’s smoother, more seraphic tones are allowed to guide the tracks.

ANEESA GREY FLORAL BOOT By Boohoo
What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Vintage with attitude. I like getting genuine vintage and taking it out of context. Cross-era dressing. Which historical figure had some wicked style? A great friend recently broadened my knowledge on Elsa Schiaparelli. She balanced avant-garde and elegance with the precision of an alchemist. She once collaborated with Salvador Dali. Her clothes changed fashion history forever.
Almost everything seems to come in denim this season, so why not your shoes to? Be hot on the heel of the latest trend with these great boots.
What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Currently none of them, they all hire stylists.
RRP $85.00 Boohoo.com
Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Chain stores. They breed insecurity, consumerism and disposable fashion.

S U G N I K A M R E H E V O L How does this album differ from your previous releases? Probably the most significant difference is that part of the album was produced by Joe Henry. I’m a big fan of his writing and albums and love the work he’s done producing Allen Toussaint, Solomon Burke, and others. I already had a couple of his songs I wanted to do and thought it would be great to call him and see if we might collaborate. Turns out, he was thinking the same thing and when we finally got on the phone, that first call lasted over two hours! What have you been listening to since your last album? How do you think Bon Iver, Kelly Clarkson, and Adele’s covers of your songs have impacted your status with younger audiences? I listen to a lot of old school jazz and blues, African, Indian and Celtic music and the scores of CDs and songs regularly sent to me for consideration on my new project. As for Adele, Justin (Bon Iver) and Kelly covering ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me,’ I couldn’t be more thrilled and honored. I’m a big fan of all three and really enjoyed connecting with Justin when they played a show in L.A. this past summer. If you were breaking into the business today, do you think it would be easier or more difficult than it was 40 years ago? I think that without the vibrant network of coffee houses and the college circuit, and the fewer number of new artists that characterized the early 70s, it might be harder. That said, getting the word out through YouTube and finding new ways to build buzz makes it a draw. There are more inexpensive, populist routes to getting your music and image out through the internet and indie labels and blogs, but wading through the explosion of new artists from nearly format of music trying to break through is challenging. On returning to New Zealand… I have so many fans that stay in touch with me in between my tours in New Zealand, and we all really look forward to reconnecting. I’m excited to play the new songs for them and get to have time to explore these great cities and countryside. I only wish we could get to more cities and have more time off. But we’re all excited to get back and play these wonderful venues. SEE HER LIVE: BONNIE RAITT FRI 05 APR CBS CANTERBURY ARENA, CHRISTCHURCH
Michael Kiwanuka’s honey drippin’ soulful vocals instantly win your ears over at the first verse. The BBC flatters him calling his voice a “rich, weathered instrument that appears to carry more tan his 24 years.” Yet despite the obvious comparisons to Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, Kiwanuka, by his own admission cannot really claim any Motown pedigree. “I grew up in a house that owned no records at all,” the soft-spoken North Londoner explains, “and the first music I started listening to was the usual hardcore, grunge and skate stuff that my mates were into”. With Ugandan parents Kiwanuka’s early days in the very proper and well-heeled neighborhood of Muswell Hill “was probably the only black boy they’d ever seen - even on telly. So I really didn’t want to stand out”. Keen to keep a low profile, playing music, as a black man, seemed a real cliché, one he was keen to avoid. Yet one day he came across a sampler CD that came with a music magazine. “It was full of all kinds of old soul music. Plenty of really good Stax, Motown and everything in between. I loved it.” From there he started exploring songwriting in general, especially that which was steeped in soul and folk traditions and took inspiration from Bob Dylan, Shuggie Otis, Roberta Flack and especially Bill Withers. Early days on the London acoustic circuit paid off attracting interest and making connections with management and eventually landing his name on the desk of Communion Records. In 2011 he released two EPs Tell Me a Story and I’m Getting Ready, both produced by Paul Butler (The Bees) using vintage equipment at the man’s basement studio in Ventor on the Ilse of Wight. “Yeah, you’re right,” he quips, “It does sound crazy; a black man making vintage soul with an English folk feel in a house in one of England’s most folk infested places. What can I say, that’s where we did it!” His latest album, Home Again, is a compilation of those EPs and then some. The title track “ties everything together for me. Like resting and taking stock after hard work. It’s looking at your achievements. I like to tell stories and that is what inspires my songs.” Given the mildly ecclesiastical themes in his music and the occasional inklings towards gospel, was he aware that he’s playing small church venues whilst he’s in Aotearoa? “Really, that’s the perfect link Communion Records, home, spirit. I’m the body, I’ve got the soul!” Will it be Holy, Father? “Now don’t start on those trinity gags!” WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR SEE HIM LIVE: MICHAEL KIWANUKA
