WE SALUTE YOU
Australian bass player Neil Smith, a one-time member of AC/DC and Rose Tattoo, has lost his battle with cancer. A statement on Smith’s Facebook page has confirmed that he passed away early Sunday morning. “There is not a person out there who has met him and not felt like their lives were better for the experience. He was a loving and devoted father, a loyal friend and all round generous person. He was larger than life, and his passing will be felt.”
DOUBLE TRUFFLE SHUFFLE
The Silo Cinema 2012/13-season finale has been announced. On Fri 12 Apr, showcasing an epic double feature, as voted by Silo Cinema fans – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 original) at 6.30pm, followed by The Goonies at 9pm. The Silo Market will also accompany Silo Cinema, kicking off from 5pm. All you need is your blankets, wine and beanbags and you are set for the night.
Neil was a member of the AC/DC rhythm section in 1974. Rob Bailey then Mark Evans replaced him before Cliff Williams took over the role permanently. Williams has remained as the AC/DC bass player ever since.
THAT’S ALL FOLKS
NBC has announced a switch in late night, replacing Jay Leno at the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon. Fallon will take over in about a year with veteran Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels taking over as executive producer of the show. Steve Burke, chief executive officer of NBC Universal, said the network is purposefully making the move when Leno is still at the top of the ratings, just as when Leno replaced Johnny Carson at Tonight in 1992. “Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is his time,” Burke said. Leno, in a statement, offered his congratulations to Fallon. “I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy,” he said. “If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.” Fallon said: “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”

PLAYING FINDING DORY FAVourites Christopher Blake Composer
Disney and Pixar have finally announced plans to create a sequel to their 2003 animated blockbuster Finding Nemo. The new film, Finding Dory, picks up about a year after the action of Finding Nemo, with Ellen DeGeneres’ forgetful fish Dory on her own adventure to reunite with loved ones. “I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” DeGeneres said. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating Toy Story 16. But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is — it’s got a lot more Dory.” The sequel is due out in November 2015, and will be directed by Andrew Stanton, who also made Finding Nemo.
Rihanna has sold in excess of 20,000 tickets to her two Auckland concerts on Sun 06 Oct and Mon 07 Oct sparking demand for a third show. Like leaving an old musty radio in the back of your fridge for far too long, grindcore band Rotten Sound (Finland) is celebrating their 20th anniversary of Grindcore and chaos during the whole year of 2013. It began with their EP release in January and has continued a path of destruction in the form of festival appearances and shows.
Best known for his song ‘Simon Says’, Pharoahe Monch is acclaimed for his complex rapping technique – known for crafting intricate and alluring rhythms in his music. He compares writing and recording his lyrics to writing and filming a movie – he will “punch-in” vocals so he can “retake some things, just like a film”.

As one part of Led Zeppelin, I don’t care what he says – it’s as close as we can get to having them live on a New Zealand stage. The lead singer and frontman presents songs from his early days in the band to his more recent adventures in the heart land of the US.
In case you haven’t heard, the talented ‘Rise Up’ hitmakers have been snapped up by a European label and the boys are bidding adieu to their homeland. So, as a tribute to their fans – and to keep us happy in their absence! – they are putting on one last tour before they’ll be back for the summer (no doubt).

Celebrating their fifth anniversary this year, the Auckland band is finally making a return to the live circuit. This is the first time in a year that they’ll be taking their mixture of “pleasant melody and smashing dissonance, complex structures and punky mess” on the road.
Hamilton-based band Devilskin are bringing their high octane and full-on energy show to the big smoke. After a busy 2012 touring and perfecting their art, this one-off show is not to be missed and promises to be like no other metal show you have seen before. They’ll be screaming, of course.

Bill Homans, also known as the legendary bluesman Watermelon Slim, is hoping to do a little fishing here, but when he’s not he’ll be blowing your mind with soulful tunes. A former Mensa member, fencing scholarship recipient, Vietnam vet and 240-point bowler, his rich life provides him with ample subject matters.
The Irish lads are heading pour way to win over thousands of screaming fans with that accent… and also their music. The trio has had plenty of radio airplay in New Zealand, and with hits such as ‘If You Ever Come Back,’ ‘For the First Time’ and new single ‘If You Could See Me Now’.

From the gloomy depths of the Auckland lives “The Super Villains” a hip-hop collective designed to bring back all the swagger of the 1990s in the style of upbeat boom-bap, bibidy Rap and Swayze bangers. They’ve been together as the SuperVillains RMC for seven months, playing various venues in Auckland. And the best part? They wear costumes.
SUN 14 APR SUNDAY SESSIONS CHAPEL BAR & BISTRO
3PM
Playing hits from today and yesteryear, Thane and special guests guarantee a good time session. This time, he’s joined by Dave Hull. If decent beats – from funk to indie, hip hop to oldies, soul to house – is your thing then he’s your man. The pair are eclectic and awesome. There’s also more special guests.
There are few constants in the world of music that you can count on: Motorhead will always be loud, Eminem will always be irreverent, and The Flaming Lips are always going to be freaky. For a band who has spent three decades blowing people’s expectations apart and embracing the maddening psychotropic void it is odd to think that they have only just made an album called The Terror. The Terror is album number thirteen for the band and it finds them in a more obtuse disposition than usual. The Lips waste no time and dive right into the abyss with opener ‘Look … The Sun Is Rising’. The song is laced with abrasive guitar chords, ghostly swarms of harmony, and vast smudges of white noise, all the while Steven Drozd is laying out a throbbing beat that threatens to swallow you whole. Before you know it you are riding the sheets of distortion on ‘Be Free, A Way’ as if drifting helplessly through the cosmos. This is a similar vein that the band has been mining since At War With The Mystics but with one key difference – the tone. All of the bright colours have drained from their wide-eyed psychedelics and it has been replaced by an unsettling gloom. Fear looms around every corner on The Terror and it is in the calmest moments that you can feel it most profoundly. The album’s centerpiece is the 13-minute ‘You Lust’ (featuring indie pop duo Phantogram), an industrial krautrock monument to
excess that repeats the line “lust to succeed” like a psychotic mantra. The band are again working with producer extraordinaire David Fridmann, who has produced eight of their previous records. Singer Wayne Coyne describes Fridmann as an integral part of their sound, which is easy to believe given both parties’ propensity for sonic excess and subdued menace. As a bonus track, the Lips treat you to a shimmering rendition of The Beatles classic ‘All You Need Is Love’. Rather than the celebratory mood of the original, however, you can expect to hear the sing-along favourite in a much more introspective way. This album is designed to be taken whole, as one giant bitter pill, not cut up into chunks and digested safely. The Flaming Lips have never been about playing it safe and if The Terror is anything to go by, they never will. WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

RECORD STORE DAY
For music enthusiasts this is their resurrection of Christ. Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day officially founded in 2007 to embrace that fantastic character, the independent record store. Built on love and the dusty grooves of the B-sides, pay homage on this day with a crate dig, discuss the most significant releases of the 20th century and brag about your limited edition collectors set signed by the artist. Share tour stories with fellow patrons and tell tales of the sweaty nights in the clubs of yesteryear. The Record Store is the nucleus of what it is to LOVE music.

Shit worth dRINKING
CITIZEN PARK 424 NEW NORTH RD
The rumours are true – there is brand new bar in Kingsland. Complete with a sunny garden bar to keep the season spirit alive, the owners have turned the old retro motorcycle shop into a hip new location that’s a great place to relax and mingle. The food is tasty; the company is fun. Find out for yourself!
BETTY’S 32 BLAIR ST
With award-winning hospitality. Set within an everchanging digitally projected environment, Bettys offers something unique. They have an extensive list from their wine cellar – which, did we mention is walkthough? – as well as New Zealand’s best cocktail lists.
KING OF SNAKE
Tucked away behind a furniture store on Victoria Street, King of Snake is not just a place with some of the best modern Thai cuisine in town. Serving outstanding cocktails, as well as a good selection of beer and wine, the atmosphere at this crazy and zany place is fun and relaxed. The food is fantastic and perfect for sharing with a group. Taking inspiration from Indochine (the bar is named after one of the restaurant’s most popular cocktail) and Chingwag Eathai (the menu features a smattering of meals from this dearly missed eatery), King of Snake will undoubtedly gain a cult following.

Oh god! The olds have taken over my favourite bar! A quick survey of the cats in on Saturday will tell you that it was one finely dressed, mature and well-heeled bunch. No poodle skirts or bobby socks. Though, I did spot plenty of retro ‘sailor’ tats, Betty Page ‘dos, plaid shirts and glam frocks, even the occasional pair of brothel creepers. So I expected swooning and screaming. After all I had it on good authority Lewis Durham is “a bit of a dish!” Appropriately, they kicked off with a raucous version of ‘I’m Going Back’ - after all they have returned to our shores multiple times now. ‘Don’t Make A Fool Out Of Me’ and a blast of oldies quickly followed it from the debut, then plenty from the new record ‘Smoking in Heaven’. On stage all three Durham kids – Daisy in summer frock, Lewis in his best Zoot Suit and ‘Baby’ (Kitty) in a sizzlin’ hot star spangled sweet heart of the rodeo cowgirl number.

The performance was professional but still sufficiently loose enough to be spontaneous with just enough avoidance of the default mode. The kids switch instruments so many times I lose count. Clearly they are masters of the toy box, playing like they were born to do it. And at the end of a sweaty night they tellingly, finish with the impromptu-sounding ‘Bye Bye Baby’, a guitar jam Daddy and Kitty cleaning up with ‘Mean Son Of A Gun’. K, D & L are a class act, turning Bodega’s grungy bunker into a hot-n-steamy jazz club and for that, on the last night of daylight saving, with the cool southerly drifting in, we are grateful for! Michael Kiwanuka Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland Thu 04 Apr
The stage at the Holy Trinity Cathedral was set underneath giant concrete arches and lit up with pink and yellow lights. Shortly after sitting down Iva Lankum was announced and a tiny woman walked on stage, she let out a beautiful strong, husky voice. After a brief intermission (tea and coffee was served), Michael Kiwanuka walked straight out onto the stage, picked up a guitar and started a slow soulful blues jam with his band. His vocals wafted through the room, so smooth and rich. His voice is that of a true soul singer, yet his band was more blues-rock and he often stepped away from the microphone entering into impressive sweeping guitar solos. He then began to play in a casual bossa nova jazz style, allowing his voice to spread throughout the hall, washing over the audience. Kiwanuka says “All my songs started with just me and my guitar so I’m going to play a couple songs with just me and my guitar”. This part of his set was more than perfect, he plays ‘Any Day Will do Fine’ and ‘Home Again’. We were again witness to his superb guitar playing. He ended his set with a flawless cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Waterfall’, a tribute, he claims, to one of his favourite artists of all time. Review Courtesy Of Zoe Fitzpatrick

KIWI NATHAN HAINES TALKS COMING HOME AND GOING BACK IN TIME.
Last week, musician/sax-meister/composer Nathan Haines Tui for best Jazz Album 2013 with his eighth recording, The Poet’s Embrace. With that work, Haines was keen to establish himself as a serious jazz artist. He made a distinctive move away from his earlier leanings – with a collection of vintage microphones, a classic 1964 Selmer Mark VI tenor sax, an EMI-Neve desk and Nicolas Slonimsky’s Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Pattern he was to determined to capture the “real” sounds of jazz from the classic period 1930 to 1955. Poet’s Embrace was supposed to be Haines’ parting gift as he had shut up shop and relocated to London. But a year on, he’s back in Auckland’s York Street Studios with long time collaborator Mike Patto, doing it again with Vermillion Skies – Haines’ ninth studio album. It was recorded in double-quick time over January and pressed up for launch on March 29. “After the last one, which was made in two days – following the work ethic of the one-take jazz greats of the ‘50s –that seemed to go really well, so I knew I could get this done in a quick turnaround,” Haines says. He was genuinely surprised at the support of Poet’s, noting “people were really waiting for me to make a record, a quartet of my own.” This spurred him own to make more music and to write again. The burning question in my mind was why come back when he could go anywhere – especially now he’s based in London. Haines is a little “bendy” on the answer, but I get the impression the combination of the room size and the feel are very important to him. “The studio is an instrument and I know it well,” he explains. Haines has even familiarised himself with the car park. “I wanted that live reverb sound. It’s something that Mike and I have been visualising for years. For Poet’s we had a vintage plate reverb, but this time I went for the huge real sound of an echo in a room. It sounds amazing on everything! We got speakers of our performances, played through the vintage mics and played the sound out into the car park and recorded it back through the ‘Neve desk’. Luckily all the reverbs were down on tape by the time the grumpy neighbors started phoning in complaining. One caller, near to tears left a message to say ‘There’s been really loud saxophone coming
out of the car park all weekend!’ Ah, yeah. Sorry about that.” Back on keys again, pianist Kevin Field rolled in a 12-foot Steinway grand piano.“Kevin’s a world class pianist,” says Haines. “His melodic concept of harmony and phrasing is exceptional – a big part of my last record was his sound!” Drummer Alain Koetsier uses a vintage kit to provide a classic sound of fire and polyrhythms, and matches off against acoustic bassist Ben Turua, who provides a superb and solid foundation to Haines’ music. In this way, Vermillion Skies (“the colour of dawn in London”) builds on the classic sound of Poets’, but stretches the concept even further by including a six-piece brass section (two flugels, two French horns and two trombones). Most of Vermillion was penned in London between gigs. “I had this vision that it might be performed in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club [the famous Soho setting that’s been promoting jazz since 1959].” A year on from the big move with his wife Jaime, Haines was feeling creative again, so with a tiny studio set-up consisting of a small midi keyboard, Walkman speakers and his beloved tenor saxophone, he went about setting his new life down in sounds – and this time words, too. “I just sat down at the piano and thought ‘What did I like about the last album, how could it work in analogue?’ Also I wanted to reference film soundtracks. I wanted the record to have a very spacious feel and also to have some vocals and to do a jazz record with a horn section.” Haines has also never shaken his respect for ‘80s pioneers such as Steely Dan. So, tongue firmly in cheek, a good whisky in his tumbler and some Coltrane valve amp stereo he started sketching out “these scenarios of dressing in 80s garb, staying up all night and watching the sun come up over a London and never knowing who you may run into on the London streets”. “I guess I like the narrative quality, and yes I wanted a chance to create songs again – a sort of film noir in jazz!” WRITTEN BY Tim GRUAR NEW ALBUM VERMILLION SKIES OUT NOW

Right now my ethos is all about exploration and experimentation. I love seeing art in public spaces. This can lead to some quite abstract challenges, but it also has the exciting potential for a new type of dialogue to develop, as well as a chance to move past some pre-imposed ideas about art and art-making. What’s the must-have look this season? For me, fashion is a personal choice. It’s how you want to express yourself, present yourself to the world. For some, it’s art. I reckon wear what you want to wear, wear clothing that expresses what you want to express, what you feel comfortable in, what you like and what makes you happy. Colours/patterns big this season? I’m a bit out of the loop as I don’t own a TV and don’t follow mainstream media, but for me personally it’s all about being comfortable and having fun with what I wear! I’m loving colours and patterns and just having fun with personal expression. One of my all-time-favourite things to do is an op shop mission. If money were no obstacle, I would buy all my favourite pieces from the rad local designers emerging out of Auckland at the moment: Hannah-Lee Jade, Thistle Brown and the Nymphets... you all rock my world, thanks for making fashion so fun! What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? Effortlessly put together and expressing your own individual style is always sexy. What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? Lace, silk, flowy skirts, velvet, jewellery made by magical creatures such as Zara from Wunderkammer or random finds like the hand embroidered turquoise necklace I found at this Bob Marley/Rasta district in Northern Thailand. Clothing with memories is the best.

BioShock Infinite starts with your character, Booker DeWitt, being transported to a lighthouse on the coast of an unnamed land. He knows is that the lighthouse seems to be the place to find his target - a girl he needs to “deliver to wipe his debt” - and after a short (and amazing) sequence, Booker finds himself above the clouds themselves, in the land of Columbia (a floating city.) Columbia is the polar opposite of the original BioShock’s Rapture. What was dark, broken, wet, and barren of life, is instead beautifully ornate, with smiling, singing, playing inhabitants who seem to have not a care in the world. Columbia, however, is not what it seems. Instead, it’s what happens when the 1% of 1882 creates a city for themselves in the sky. While it’s all happiness and sunshine for the majority of the population, racism abounds, and it’s a major theme for the game.

Her other special ability is to open small tears in the fabric of space and time, to give you access to gun turrets, medical supplies, cover, and so on. Elizabeth works so well as an AI partner that she is sorely missed when she’s not around. Skylines (the roads of Columbia; think “roller coaster” and you won’t be far off) may not cover every bit of land, but where they’re found you’ll be bound to jump aboard. With the help of the Skyhook - Booker’s first weapon - it’s as simple as aiming for them and hitting a button, then whooosh! You’re away. They’re fun, and a practical element too; useful in and out of combat, they give the game a unique character.

Go behind the scenes with Judd Apatow (Superbad) and Lena Dunham (Girls) to see how they make their comedy gold.
Stephen Chbosky adapts and directs his coming-of-age epistolary novel, resulting in a high school movie that’s emotional and engaging without being overly sentimental. Refusing to shirk the dark side of adolescence, Chbosky deals with themes of sex, death, drugs, dependency, abuse and identity – and not a sparkly vampire in sight. There’s plenty of humour amidst the teen awkwardness and angst, much courtesy of Mae Whitman, who owns the role of Mary Elizabeth: “a nice person underneath the parts of her that hate everybody.” In minor roles the adult supporting cast are great - especially Joan Cusack as Charlie’s doctor and Paul Rudd as Mr. Anderson. It’s the youngsters that impress, however. Logan Lerman charms as ‘Wallflower’ Charlie, American-accented Emma Watson is spot on as Sam, and Ezra Miller perfect as Patrick. All this and
a cracking teen soundtrack, groovy 1990s period detail, solid unshowy direction and a script that makes the leap from page to screen with little of the raw emotional appeal of Charlie’s letters lost. Like the book, the film attempts a sincere, moving and provocative portrayal of imperfect, uncertain young people. Some will find it too sweet, too soap-operatic or just too American, but with Charlie’s rallying cry of “we are infinite,” Perks joins The Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook as a U.S. movie adaptation that does justice to its source material. Perks may just become The Breakfast Club of new century teens, adding guts to the high school genre by attempting to portray the sickly sweet truth of teenage trials and tribulations - acne n’ all. THE INDIE-POP BAND PHOENIX HAVE A NEW ALBUM COMING OUR WAY – AND IT’S KIND OF A BIG DEAL.
French group Phoenix’s new album, Bankrupt!, is like no other. It has both a standard and deluxe edition. The deluxe edition will include 71 tracks with a majority of these being demos or short pieces of music, while the standard album is a 10-track adventure in a new direction. Phoenix began making waves in 1997 when they pressed and distributed 500 copies of a single on their own label, Ghettoblaster. The release soon led to the band being signed and put an end to the days of playing out of vocalist Thomas Mars’ garage. From there, they have released six studio albums, the first United in 2000, which had the track ‘Too Young’ featured in the films Lost in Translation and Shallow Hal. From United to 2006’s It’s Never Been Like That, Phoenix grew with greater mainstream success and the latter album led to a tour in the United States and eventually, rock band Paramore covered the song ‘Long Distance Call’ on French TV show Taratata. Fast forward three years and their sixth release Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was certified Gold in Australia, Canada and the United States, and the soon to be released Bankrupt! marks album number seven. I caught up with Phoenix’s guitarist Christian Mazzalai and he told me recording the new album was a new type of beast. “It was longer and harder [than recording Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix], but in a good way. We’re all friends, and we were suffering, but to share the pain with friends is good.” Bankrupt! was a directionless album, with no blueprints, the band allowed it to grow on its own. A process that would take two years – “We wanted to get things right and be true to our direction,” says Mazzalai. “We wanted to surprise ourselves.” And surprise themselves they did, but not only musically. The band spent an unexpected three months in New York City when they began work on the album, and the time away from home led Paris to becoming one of their greatest inspirations. “We were more inspired by Paris being in New York [than we were] by New York. Why? Because we were homesick. We were watching films

from home and being far from home, France is more inspiring.” Phoenix is a band that draws inspiration from everything around them and is driven to push themselves into new territory. “With every album we are trying to find a new direction.” When it came to the sound of Bankrupt!, Mazzalai says, “Every day, I have a new vision of the album. We’ve only just finished it… I hope we’ve gone somewhere new and done deep French emotions.” Naturally, each of the members of Phoenix has different tastes and influences. Growing up listening to everything from Bach to hip-hop, they believe “in all genres you find a little something”. “Our idea of creation is to take from every domain and put it together in our own way.” Mazzalai believes creative direction on an album’s music videos is just as important for the band as maintaining control over their own music and lyrics. “The most important thing is to control our music and everything around it. We’ve never compromised, that’s a key point, and it’s a very important thing to do what is true to us.” If you’ve ever wondered why the band doesn’t sing in French, Mazzalai says it wasn’t something they ever considered. “We began when we were 12 years old, we didn’t ask ourselves. English is the language of pop; it’s like a code. For us, we use it as a tool, we sing in English, but we talk about very European things.” Because of this, there are no complete Phoenix records in existence that are entirely in French. However, the band discovered a new love for French singing on the journey to creating this album and Mazzalai thinks it has influenced the record. “We tried it in French, but it didn’t go on the last album…[on the deluxe edition] some [of the tracks] are in French, so you’ll be able to hear that.” WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY NEW ALBUM BANKRUPT OUT: FRI 19 APR

The Kings Arms filled up with eager fans last night (5th April 2013), it seems that Villainy have already gathered themselves a loyal following.
Hallelujah! Mavis is in the house. This is the woman that can truly testify that she has stood by Dr Martin Luther King. And she was still testifying! She was on the highway; she was taking us there.
Villainy entered to a dramatic atmospheric piece before getting straight down to business. The crowd loved them and went crazy as they played ‘The Answer’. Neil Fraser’s vocals were near perfect live, his voice slid from brutal screams into soft lulls with absolute ease. The rock anthem ‘Another Time’ revealed a haunted and sombre quality to his voice. Combined with the immaculate rhythm section and solid guitars, this was a memorable number. During the title track from their album Mode. Set. Clear. it became obvious how talented and in sync Dave Johnson and Thom Watts’ rhythm section is. The bass and drums complimented and fed off one another adding depth, funk and strength to their sound. After they left the stage the crowd cheered and cheered for an encore and when Villainy returned they offered the audience a choice between a Prodigy or Beastie Boys cover. Beastie Boys won and Villainy launched into an awesome rendition of ‘Sabotage’ completely in their own style.
“Jeff Tweedy had a point when he quipped late “You already got your money’s worth, we can relax!” Each number was a big, Soul Train production. At 70-odd she’s still got the power and the command. Heaven knows what the younger members of the audience thought, because this woman had history and she made no apologies for it. When Tweedy returns he has his merry men in tow. He takes a while to warm up, but when he does, the jokes are clever, the rapport slightly awkward but sincere. The band play a game of contrast on the The Whole Love repertoire, contrasting Tweedy’s sweet melancholic Americana against Cline’s angular, abrasive guitars, heavy chords, Kotche’s thundering, tribal drums, keys from Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen and John Stirratt’s throbbing bass. Tracks like ‘The Art Of Almost’, ‘Dawned On Me’ and ‘Black Moon’ all seem to be delivered like every musician is playing a different song, at a different time, even in a different place. Yet it all comes together in a fantastic discord of harmony. For the rest of the night Wilco cover pretty much every other album from early works to now and it’s astounding how experimental yet accessible their range is. Wilco have been over here in various forms for over 10 years, we love ‘em, so please keep coming!
