KT TUNSTALL

Singer/songwriter KT Tunstall is set to release her fourth studio album on Fri 07 Jun.

Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon is a return to the simplicity of her early work and an evolution of her sound, with countryfolk undercurrents. The album is made up from two sessions separated into two distinct parts - an A and B side. The first side focuses on the themes of mortality, following the passing away of her father last year. The second side is more reflective of changes in outlook and shifts in her personal life.

WERE HERE

Storm Thorgerson, the British graphic designer, has lost his battle with cancer aged 69. The designer created artwork for bands and musicians including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel and Muse over his 40 year career. Thorgerson was a childhood friend of the founding members of Pink Floyd, most famously creating the prism of colour across the cover of The Dark Side of the Moon. His artwork for the band also included the lonesome cow on the cover of Atom Heart Mother, the burning businessman on Wish You Were Here, and the pig flying over Battersea power station on Animals.

Your house is on fire, what do save? HEDLUV: Probably have to say my girlfriend and kid. PASSMAN: Of course yeah, I thought you were gonna say your keyboards. HEDLUV: Flipping nearly did! That would’ve been awkward...

Pink Floyd guitarist and singer Dave Gilmour said in a statement on his website that Thorgerson’s artwork for the band had been “an inseparable part of our work. He has been a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on and a great friend. I will miss him.”

Favourite ‘90s TV show? H: ChuckleVision. I’ve said too much. Dream job as a kid? P: International rock star/corporate lawyer. H: I liked to wear a policeman’s helmet... First album? P: My mum bought me Michael Jackson’s BAD on cassette, but she dubbed it onto another cassette so I wouldn’t wear out the original.

Who would play you in a film? P: Sam Rockwell. H: People say I look a bit like Orlando Bloom...

Worst job you’ve had? P: I was a pool attendant that couldn’t swim once... But it was a pretty shallow pool. Which song do you wish you wrote? P: ‘I’ll be there for you’ by the Rembrandts. H: Can you imagine?! Biggest fear? P: Dying... And dying on stage. H: I’m not sure I want that sort of information “out there”. Favourite lyric? H: “We’re doing fine - I’d give it a 9... 9.95”. Spunkadelic on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack. Plug whatever you have coming up... H: We’re playing at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. P: We originally came for the New Zealand music month, but apparently that’s just for New Zealanders. H: Yeah we’re not actually a comedy act, but hopefully no-one will notice

Fresh from European and US tours promoting their new album, The Ruby Suns have returned home to present to you the new record in all its pop glory. English rapper/singer Example couldn’t get enough of us when he came to play a sold out concert in Waihi Beach in January – so he’s coming back to play another explosive show. The hitmmaker, who has topped the charts with ‘Stay Awake’, ‘Change the Way You Kiss Me’ and ‘Kickstarts’, is a dance show you don’t want to miss.

After two long years, the band is releasing their debut album The Way Out. So what do you do to celebrate? Play some live shows of course. The Auckland fivepiece is influenced by Lost Prophets, and Breaking Benjamin, fused with their individual styles, and delivers a unique brand of hard rock ‘n’ roll.

Xavier Rudd and Thomas Oliver are heading to a place near you this month. The Australia singer-songwriter’s seventh album, Spirit Bird, has taken him to some pretty cool locations around the world, including our sweet country. He is a spiritual kind of guy, that looks into his ancestry, painting beautiful pictures with his words.

SUN 28 APR BUZZCOCKS BODEGA

8PM, $60, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

UK legends Buzzcocks return to New Zealand shores for their biggest run of Kiwi shows in their glorious punk rock career. The original band’s performing their trademark mix of high-energy guitars and pop smarts, the very thing which resulted in some of the greatest songs of the punk era.

KING TUFF THE KINGS ARMS

7PM, $20, UNDERTHERADAR.CO.NZ

The creation of garage-rocker Kyle Thomas, this bands charisma has been described as magnetic. The shows have been called “cheap-beer-soaked tent revivals”. Their solo debut album, Was Dead, was the sort of album many musicians would burn down their garages to make and their latest has captivated critics around the world.

In Willy Moon, we see a pop singer with musical integrity. He has reincarnated rock ’n’ roll from the 1950s and ‘60s, fused it with funk, 1940s jazz and the theatrics of old Broadway musicals. He has then slammed it all together using modern electronic and hip-hop production. He is the rock ’n’ roll equivalent to Lana del Rey’s and her revamped 1960’s style. The strings in the album opener ‘Get Up (What You Need)’ instantly turn back time and are joined by a heavy drum beat and Moon’s forceful vocals. Backing vocals bring a funk element to his sound, which continues through the rest of the album. The strong electronic bass in ‘What I Want’ freshens up another old-school sounding number. Moon’s cool suave vocals are complimented by higher gospelstyle backing vocals. Similarly, ‘She Loves Me’ also embraces the current electronic situation in today’s music, creating a harsh yet aurally pleasing confrontation of the 1960s and 2010’s. The hand jive rhythm in ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ is infectious, and once joined by the intermittent guitar parts and Moon’s bluesy vocals it is an effective resurrection of a classic style. Deep and sinister sounding horns in ‘Working for the Company’ are met with marching drums and Moon’s tempestuous chanting. Moon chews his lyrics up and spits them out at you with immense amounts of character. His music inspires mental images of early 20th Century working class

fervour and old gangster flicks. A comparison to Tom Waits’ newer pieces such as ‘Chicago’ or ‘Bad as Me’ is obvious. Moon is absolutely multi-dimensional and can switch with ease between darker more menacing tracks and smoother more romantic numbers. He has the ability to adapt his voice to different emotions and throw himself entirely into character for each song. ‘I Put a Spell on you’ is hypnotic, sang with mystery and allure, it draws you in and holds your attention. He really does this song justice, making it his own without abandoning its dark and brooding essence. The closing instrumental piece, ‘Murder Ballad’, has an enigmatic western feel to it and once again is filled with character and imagery, proving that Moon is a musician not just a singer. In Here’s Willy Moon, classic sound collides with contemporary techniques to create pop music with soul and toughness resulting in an album that is captivating and highly addictive. With a new director at the helm, and a whole new cast of villains and heroes, Iron Man is back – suited and booted, and ready to kick some ass. After having his personal world destroyed by supervillain The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), Iron Man (RDJ) must rise from the ruins to defeat him.

directed by BRANDON CRONENBERG Starring CALEB LANDRY JONES, SARAH GADON, LISA BERRY

FRI 26 APR KILLER KARAOKE TV2, 9PM

It’s karaoke – Jackass style. Wild child Steve-O guides contestants as they attempt to sing songs while facing extreme and sometimes skin-crawling situations. These challenges include trying to sing while fending off attack dogs, being dunked in a tank of snakes or sticking bare hands into containers of wild animals.

SAT 27 APR Band Of Brothers SOHO, 12.15PM

Timed around Anzac Day, SoHo is screening a special showing of the epic WWII miniseries, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It’s a harrowing true account of real, everyday struggles on the battlefield, following a US platoon from training to victory. Tears will be shed.

Canada is the world capital for cold, cerebral sci-fi – witness the work of David Cronenberg (Rabid, Scanners, eXistenZ) and Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Cypher, Splice). If a film’s concept can be summed up in a snazzy oneword title, even better. Emergent in the field is writer/director Brandon Cronenberg, son of David, whose excellent debut ticks all of the above boxes, and more. Protagonist Caleb Landry Jones, so creepy in The Last Exorcism, is perfectly cast here. His intensity animates the occasionally listless plot, and his pale skin and red hair look striking against the film’s default backdrop – angry burgundy splashed across laboratory white. Syd (Jones) works for the Lucas Clinic harvesting celebrity diseases, from cold sores to STIs, and selling them to fans. He also supplies them to the black market by smuggling them out of work in his own body. The latter proves particularly unwise when

Jones infects himself with a sample from starlet Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon), and ends up sick – and sought after by people even sicker. Appropriately enough, the idea came to Cronenberg in a fever dream (like fellow Canadian James Cameron’s inspiration for The Terminator), and it’s the concept, not the story, that concerns him most. Such fetishisation of illness may seem disgusting – it certainly is here – but it’s also a plausible next step in an invasive celebrity culture of upskirt shots and kiss-and-tell exposés. As much a thesis as a thriller, Antiviral is undoubtedly a challenging watch, but it’s helped greatly by beautiful cinematography and music, plus a mordant sense of humour that speaks squarely to cult viewers. On this basis, Cronenberg can expect many more of those, both home and abroad. BY FLICKS.CO.NZ

This gorgeous hotel in Wellington’s centre boasts an equally impressive restaurant. Head chef Marc Soper is an award-winner with a passion for fresh flavours and unique food combinations. He strives to use only the best local produce and it shows in his top-quality grub.

RUBY RED CAFÉ

Located at Mangere Bridge, Ruby Red shines as brightly as its name suggests. It’s a cute little place, with a real retro vibe and feel, with a décor that harks back to the 1960s – complete with Edmonds flour tins and funky cutlery. With extremely competitive prices and customer service to die for, you can’t go wrong. Sure, they’re not in the heart of the city but if you are on a Sunday drive, why not stop in? You can’t go wrong with a big breakie, something the café prides themselves in, or why not try their exquisite baking with a hot coffee?

Shit worth dRINKING

BLEND BAR 12 WAKEFIELD ST

Cheap Jager, shots galore and a Sunday quiz night– Blend is a real mix of events and deals to suit all kinds of party moods. Situated in the heart of Wellington, next to the Michael Fowler Centre, it’s the ideal location whether it’s an after work business meeting, or dinner and drinks before catching a show.

SHADOWS

THE VELVET REVELATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY REVELRY

34 PRINCES ST

106 PONSONBY RD

The biggest and most well-known, student venue in New Zealand. It’s got pool tables, karaoke, movie nights and DJ’s. There’s always something exciting happening and the best part? You do not have to be a student to come along, enjoy the affordable drinks and party.

The Whiskey Smash is one of the older cocktails in American history, appearing in Jerry Thomas’ first published book on bar tending in 1887. Unfortunately, this drink has been overlooked for some time. So, taking inspiration from this refreshingly simple classic, the guys at Revelry have created a drink that builds off the same ingredients of whiskey, citrus, mint and sugar. For their whiskey they use 12-year-old Chivas Regal, because of its full rounded flavour of fruits, nuts and vanilla. Then combining it with fresh citrus juice, a home made vanilla sugar syrup, fresh mint, egg white and a beautiful French Violette Liqueur to give depth and character. Revelry is a great place to go for that after work drink. There’s no need to book, you can just turn up and sit outside on the bigges deck in Ponsonby. Even with winter on its way, you can still appreciate being outside and keep toasty in front of the fire with a cocktail in hand, all while enjoying some great music. On Wed 01 May Revelry, along with Neat Spirits & Plantation Rum, are bringing you an exclusive night on the evolution of rum. Tickets are $75 and include extensive tastings, canapés and guest speaker Dan Walker. If you’re interested in learning more or buying a ticket please email book@revelry.co.nz.

DARK LIGHT SESSIONS WITH FEDDE LE GRAND SATURDAYS 1AM-2AM (REPEATED MONDAYS 11PM-12)

The Brain Sorbet Under That Black Hat

This week one of the worlds strangely most underrated bands yet arguably one of the best we, New Zealand, have ever contributed to launch a new full-length album for the first time in over four years. You will be pleased to know that we got some time in with the beautiful mind of The Veils main man Finn Andrews. Picking up the line from late night London, the time Andrew’s says he works best; we leapt head first into the big questions. On what to expect from new album Time Stays, We Go Andrews hope’s it’s a continuation of what The Veils already are. “It’s a record about all the usual subjects for us really. There’s lots of tornado’s and poems and brains and birds.”

a band that’s being hyped up to the point of kind of nausea. I think it’s good; it’s given us a lot of freedom. We’ve always been quite outside of whatever else is going on at the time and I think that suits us.”

Andrews wrote over 100 songs for this album. Weeding them out was a lot easier than you’d think though. “I wrote a lot but I wrote 90 percent just unadulterated shit.” His song writing is a bit like keeping a musical journal. “The way I write my songs is I tip myself upside down and shake out my pockets to see what falls out – it’s kind of a little bit like that. I compared it earlier to a brain sorbet. Which is possibly a bit too much. I use writing stuff down as a way to process thoughts I guess, a lot of my sort of anxieties and things. It seems to be a way to process that stuff. It’s an odd process I’m still learning a lot about. I guess that’s why I want to keep doing it. With every record you learn a bit more and I think the reason you want to keep doing it is because it’s such a mysterious thing, you want to constantly know more about it and how it works.”

Time Stays, We Go was laid down in Los Angeles at Seedy Underbelly Studio’s – the same pad Nux Vomica came from. The journalist sniffed a scoop as Time Stays, We Go was originally due out last year but Andrew’s assured that it’s delay was for “all very boring stuff.” Mostly finding money. He had nothing but praise for formal label Rough Trade and since their contract ended Andrews has never find a label quite like them so The Veils went full solo.

NME stamped the “most underrated band on the planet” stamp on The Veils and Andrews thought it’s better to be underrated than overrated. “I think I’ve always just judged it as a success if we’ve been able to make another record after it. I think we’ve managed to get a big enough following to keep going but we’ve also sidestepped ever being able to be

Exactly what their music sounds like is always best from the horse’s mouth so thrown up against the wall Andrews had this to say, “It’s obviously my brain sorbet. “I think all you can hope for; it’s your perspective on the world and your time in it. If I could explain what my perspective was in a conversation then I probably wouldn’t have the need to write songs. It’s all I want it to be. Just an account of the years I get.”

They’re burning about the northern hemisphere at the moment checking in at festivals. We are not forgotten down here, no. Having spent his youth in New Zealand Andrews thinks of it as a landscape, he added unpretentiously, feeling that a lot of his songs are set places here. Asked whether The Veils have New Zealand in their long range plans Andrews said they’re looking at it and if not sooner, definitely by the end of the year. We’re holding him to it. Comedy Face-Off GUY WILLIAMS AND BRENDON GREEN, TWO COMEDIANS BOTH WITH SHOWS IN THE 2013 NZ INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL, WALK INTO A BAR… GUY: Where are you doing your show? BRENDON: The Basement Studio. G: That’s good. Thank God you’re not in Brooklyn again. B: Hey, they’re lovely people. And I sold out there. So I like it. G: Congratulations, stop bragging about it. B: Thanks for bringing it up. Where are you? G: The Auckland Old Folks Ass. B: You’re one of those rogue comedians that got your own venue? G: I am. Screw it. I hate ticketek.co.nz, put that in the article please. I do a koha show. I get a cheap venue, and I can just have fun with it. B: Do you do koha at the start of the show or at the end? G: At the end. It would be weird to do it at the start, “Guess how good the show’s going to be.” B: Well if it’s a crap show, it’s probably a good idea. G: The hard thing is that people do undervalue your show, because I occasionally do pull out a good one. B: (laughs) I think I’ve seen you do well once. G: I get a lot of people who literally come because it’s the cheapest show. When I first did a koha show I had people coming who were like, “We spent all our money on the bus fare from Henderson, but we can give you a bag of olives if you’d like,” and I was like, “Awesome, yeah I’ll take some olives”. I don’t even like olives; I just don’t want anyone to have a free ticket. B: Are you gunning for another award this year? G: Yes. B: Which one? G: Maximum awards. All of them. B: You won the Billy T last year, so this year… G: I’m going to try rig the People’s Choice Award. The problem is I tried to vote for myself last night, and it’s really hard to do. The TV3 website is so crummy that I couldn’t vote for myself. How are we going to convince people to give up half an hour of their day to register? B: That’s good for you, because they’re probably going to try vote for someone else, and then give up. G: I tried to rig a TV Guide Award once. B: Sexiest Man? Was it a write-in campaign? G: Best Newcomer. I voted for myself a lot of times. When I heard I was nominated I just started voting for myself. B: Sure. G: Because the only people who read TV Guide are old people. They

subscribe to TV Guide and use it to find out what’s on TV because they’re idiots, right? B: Yes. G: Because they don’t know about the internet. They’re morons, right? B: Yes. Wait, I’m saying yes to your horrible insults, but not actually agreeing as a person, I’m just letting you run with this. G: (laughs) So old people only vote once. They get their one copy of the TV Guide, they tick Tamati Coffey and Jason Gunn, and they mail it in. I’m on the internet, voting for myself like 300 times a day, and it turns out I still got smoked by Nadine Chalmers-Ross. B: (Laughs) G: The point is that if I’d really committed myself, and taken my Saturday’s to vote for myself, I would’ve won. I don’t know. Maybe not all awards can be rigged, but if they can I’m going to try and do it. We’ve learned something today. B: We’ve learnt to discount any award that gets put after your name. G: I’ve been calling myself New Zealand’s Tallest Comedian for the last five years. That’s not even an award! I just made that up! Awards are such a crock of shit in comedy, right? No offence to you, you just won an award... B: I think mine’s legit. G: No it is, and I did well to get the Billy T, but they don’t mean anything in comedy because comedy is subjective. B: Hey, can you just tell me something that you like? G: Because I’m really negative? B: Yeah. G: (pauses) I’m loving Game Of Thrones at the moment. G&B: (laughs) B: Do you think when they’re writing this up, they’ll do that whole brackets laughs thing, after everything we say, to show that we’re having a good time. G: Or just to make it look like I’m not the biggest dickhead in the world. B: (laughs) G: I come across so bad in things. B: They better put the details of our shows in here, too. G: Of course they will, they’re pros. MLB The Show (from now on, “The Show”) is the best sports simulation ever made. You can spend hours simply creating your character, carefully selecting not only how they look and what they wear but their particular batting stance (choose from over 180 different batting stances!), pitching style (ditto!), even how they react to a strike and what their practice swings look like. You start as a rookie playing AA ball for one of the farm teams, like the Durham Bulls, or the Albuquerque Isotopes (named after the team in The Simpsons that was going to be moved from Springfield to Albuquerque.) And, just in case you were worried about the realism there, The Show has licenses for all of the affiliated minor league teams too (including a number of actual stadiums.) “Easy” in The Show is actually a tiered difficulty. What this means is that, as you progress, the game’s “easy” level will get slightly harder. For example: at level 1 easy the pitcher will only throw fastball strikes and you only need to hit a single button for timing, at higher levels the pitcher will start throwing out of the strike zone, then different types of pitches and so on until you reach “Easy level 6/6”. The increases in level happen while you’re playing. So you can start the first inning at 1/6 and finish at 6/6. At the end of the game you can save this progress or if you feel you still need some practice, you can ignore it and start the process again in the next game.

MLB The Show has never been about the quick pay off and this gentle increment of difficulty is a great way to ease into the game without removing the fun bits. The depth of gameplay is amazing. When you play in franchise mode (either for one season or in full mode) you have to manage everything from player scouting player to pitching rotations to a training regime for each individual player. You also have to manage your AA and AAA affiliate Minor League teams. Of course, you can set the computer to manage this stuff too. There’s so much to it, it’s hard to know where to start. Fortunately, with a title as rich as this, there’s no need to stop - ever. WRITTEN BY HADYN GREEN

Strong Foundation

THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION’S LUKE BUDA REVEALS THE LONG HAUL BEHIND THEIR NEW ALBUM FANDANGO. Fandango – a lively Spanish dance, or a foolish/ useless act or thing. But ask The Phoenix Foundation’s Luke Buda for the meaning behind the Kiwi band’s album title and his response would be “hard work”. After 15 months of just recording – let alone the last two months of intensive refining and promotion – the band’s front man says the build up to their fifth album release has “driven [him] insane”. Following their critically acclaimed fourth release Buffalo and finding success in the UK market with their TV debut on Later... with Jools Holland in 2011, the boys found themselves back home and without any tour plans. “It was like, ‘Ok we finished touring, things are exciting,’” says Luke. “After the last couple of albums, we did Phoenix stuff then went solo, but this time we were like, ‘Let’s keep momentum we had in the UK going’ – and then the album took a year and a half to make which is pretty hilarious. We did the best we could.”

“That’s how the double album got made,” he explains. “Because we tried as hard as we could to make it not a double, but we couldn’t decide what tracks to put on or put off. I opened up the archive folder and there’s like 30 other demos we had been working on for this album. It’s absurd really how much music we have got through in the last 15 months.” They also got through two drummers during this time, with Chris O’Connor replacing Richie Singleton who left the group after 12 years to focus on his masters in ecology – a decision he didn’t take lightly.

“I think all recording processes can have integrity, but there’s what you imagine making and what you hope to make. Maybe you’re listening to really weird electronic music and you think, ‘I’m going to make this’, but then when you start making music naturally, it changes – you just make whatever happens. We don’t have a style manifesto or anything.”

“Richie was the only guy in the band who had another major thing other than music, unlike the rest of us who were all yearning to play together,” says Luke. “It’s a positive thing he’s gone to do and he’s one of the most considerate human beings I’ve met. He said, ‘I just wanted to make sure I have you enough time to find a new person to play on the album so when they go on tour they have something invested in the album.’ Great dude.”

“[We were] working from 10am to 6pm, go home and cook, put kids in the bath and that kind of shit, go back a couple hours later and work until midnight. That’s what it was like. I know I sound whingy, but it was nonstop. It is hard, especially if you’ve got two kids and hardly any fucking money, but let’s not go into that,” he adds with a laugh.”

|

As someone that likes to enjoy his music “lying in bed, listening through headphones”, Luke says the sequence of tracks was perhaps the most agonised over decision, months before it was even finished, to ensure the musical journey sounded just right.

Like their previous records, Fandango’s evolution began as a single step without any direction or intent – but that’s not a bad thing. As Luke says, he believes their unique sound is inescapable and doesn’t need to be started with a purpose in mind.

With one band member, Conrad Wedde, in Dunedin, percussionist Will Ricketts working on solo projects and Sam Flynn Scott, Tom Callwood and Luke in Wellington, the process took place over four different studios – including The Party Room in Dunedin and the band’s headquarters, The Car Club, in Wellington. The band had never been so dispersed before, but Luke is happy the album has a cohesive sound – of course, it took “twice the amount of work” to get it the way they wanted.

30

Opening with ‘Black Mould’ – a peculiarly dreamy track that, as Luke explains isn’t a metaphor for anything, it’s really just about mould – Fandango leads you on a beautiful and melodic journey that the likes of Pink Floyd would be proud of. Tracks such as ‘Corale’, at more than seven minutes long, begin as an instrumental piece before twisting into an upbeat electronic number you could dance to, whereas ‘The Captain’ bears all the hallmarks of ‘80s synth pop.

grooveguide.co.nz

Preparing to tour the UK in May, Luke says the boys have been working rehearsals with military-like precision– proving while their music is a lively tune, there’s nothing useless or foolish about what they do. “For us, it’s like drill sergeant. ‘Yep, let’s do that again’, now let’s have a break, and then back into it. We go for it. We take the music very seriously. We might not take ourselves very seriously…” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER ALBUM: FANDANGO OUT FRI 26 APR
