The 28th Annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame Awards were held in Los Angeles just a short time ago. This years inductees include Heart, Rush, Donna Summer, Randy Newman and Public Enemy. The decision to add Public Enemy bestows a rare honour upon the group, making them the fourth hip-hop group to be inducted putting them alongside the likes of Run DMC, The Beastie Boys and Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five.

Matt Groening commented on Comedy Central’s choice and the seventh season saying, “We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out... I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”

Bollywood Turns 100
From the first film Raja Harishchandra, a silent black and white film made in 1913 to the full coloured, musical spectacles of today, Bollywood has made the century milestone. Bollywood flourishes today with almost 1500 films being produced last year in multibillion dollar industry that continues to grow. The milestone is being commemorated with the release of Bombay Talkies, an anthology of four short films directed by four of Bollywood’s leading directors.
The Rockshop, The Lab and Kiwi FM have teamed up to bring the best of New Zealand to the airwaves. Each ‘Short Set’ a band or musician will perform two original songs and a cover from a New Zealand artist. To listen to the final results listeners will have to tune into Kiwi FM Afternoon Delight 4 pm on weekdays and Saturday Breakfast with Charlotte Ryan.

Fans of the Marvel Universe will be excited to know the official trailer for Thor: The Dark World was released late last week. Ex-Home and Away star Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor to save the nine realms from Malekith and his dark forces. Also making a return is Tom Hiddleston to resume his role as Loki from the Avengers. The film is due to release in New Zealand October 31 this year.
Splendiferous line up
The organisers behind Splendour in the Grass have released the line-up for the Australian festival, set to go down at Byron Bay in July. Big names include Mumford & Sons, TV On The Radio, The National, Empire of the Sun, Frank Ocean, Of Monsters and Men, Passion Pit, James Blake, Haim, and Kiwi favourites Fat Freddy’s Drop. Tickets are set to run $140AUD for a single day pass and $350AUD for the full three-day festival.

Cornerstone Roots have just released the second single ‘Take Me’ off the forthcoming album Rock my Soul and we can tell you it’s nothing shy of excellent once again. A medium-paced track recorded at their home studio the Zu in Raglan, their new music captures the essence of the group.

Holy shit-balls… what an album. Building upwards from the triumph of their first LP, Beastwars find new land to conquer on this 10 track, tour de force of metal. It’s a spectacular odyssey that takes in various influences, but breaks away (somewhat) from those Kyuss comparisons of their early days. Blood Becomes Fire sounds more like a mix of Meshuggah and heavier, Badmotorfinger-era Soundgarden, than true, stoner rock. The Soundgarden comparison may seem a little strange for a sludge-metal band (And obviously it’s much heavier, plus missing the punk elements), but it’s hard not to think of Kim Thayil’s driving riffs and Chris Cornell’s powerful voice when listening to this album. Likewise, Beastwars vocalist, Matthew Hyde, pulls more out of his doom-laden pie-hole than ever before. And boy does that effort pay-off. On ‘Tower Of Skulls’ he gives his pipes a good hiding, seeing how robust they are, then pulling back just before he rips a vocal chord in half. On the same track, guitarist Clayton Anderson is Thayil reborn, as he hammers out riffs with no mercy for sensitive eardrums. Both he and Hyde, plus drummer Nathan Hickey and bassist James Woods, create as fine a piece of metal as I’ve heard since the turn of the century.
grinding out. It’s ferocious, and preps the audience for the metal warfare to come. Saying that, Beastwars know when to drop things down, too. Closing track, ‘The Sleeper,’ takes great pleasure in quiet moments of dread. It plays around with the listener, taunting an endgame of whispers, before leaving a blazing trail of metal-apocalypse to finish with. Other standouts (on an album of standouts) include the portentous ‘Shadow King,’ and the chilling, slightly nasty, ‘Rivermen. ‘Shadow King’ is all tribal heathenism and primal fear, while ‘Rivermen’ is just flat-out scary. As a grown man, it’s still not easy to listen to ‘Rivermen’ without a vague sense of “oh-shit, ohshit,” in the back of my mind. That’s where Beastwars have their competitors beaten and bloodied. They manage to create a sense of drama without sounding trite. No mean feat in an age where metal has been parodied bastardized and dehumanised beyond all recognition. My fear going into Iron Man 3 was that it would take the nihilistic fall-from-grace route of The Dark Knight Rises, as the trailers hinted. Suffering anxiety issues brought on from the events of The Avengers, Tony brings his superhero status into question – does his strength come from himself or from the machines he creates? But rather than going the nasal-gazing route, writer/director Shane Black answers by amplifying Stark’s personality, not by making Downey a downer. The action more than satisfies too, with each set piece growing more impressive as the film goes on – from the freakishly detailed destruction of his mansion to an impromptu group skydive from an exploding plane. But it’s the suit-switching climax that blows the mind, taking the emphasis off any one machine and putting Stark in focus. It’s a spectacular way

to prove that he truly is Iron Man. When stuff’s not blowing up, the signature Stark snark infuses the film with character. His relationship with a local kid is golden, showing how much of a father figure Tony is not. Even the little moments of wit shared with nameless henchmen pepper the film with enjoyment that never lets up. Despite seeming flat and onedimensional in the first act, Ben Kingsley’s The Mandarin is brilliantly realised, resulting in an antagonist whose motivations are so memorable, so unconventional and so painted in Black that he’s become one of my favourite big screen supervillains. LORDE She topped the music charts, sold out her first live shows in a matter of minutes and at only 16 years old seems to have wisdom and maturity beyond her years. Unmasked fairly recently (very cleverly managed by Universal), Lorde is already beloved by the likes of influential industry insiders such as Perez Hilton and Grimes. With sharp and savvy lyrics her songs appeal to a diverse range of ages and stages, while she also manages to push boundaries, sitting in both alternative and mainstream music. Everything about Lorde’s debut EP oozes class, confidence and sophisticated “cool”, and high rotate hasn’t even dulled the shine. The doubters are few and far between, most secure in the knowledge that this girl will be driving Cadillacs soon, and not just in her dreams.

BAT COUNTRY
The Veils’ new album Time Stays, We Go, marks the beginning of a new chapter for a band already hailed as “Quite possibly the most underrated band on the planet” by NME. Long time collaborators Sophia Burn (bass), Raife Burchell (drums), Daniel Raishbrook (guitar) and new member Uberto Rapisardi (hammond organ) help create a rich musical backdrop for lead singer/songwriter Finn Andrews’ songs, taking the listener from frenzied album opener ‘Through The Deep, Dark Wood’ to the glistening, reverbsoaked ode to lost youth ‘Candy Apple Red’ – and all within the first 10 minutes. And while the beginning of NZMM sees the band touring the states, there’s a few weeks off between that and them heading to the Europe, so fingers crossed they’re planning on doing a few home shows.
Ladi6 recently released the first single ‘Ikarus’ from her third studio album – still unnamed and due for release in June. This single features deep, soulful vocals that recall the ‘90s neo-soul explosion, but they’re placed over a beat that sounds decidedly more modern and is more than enough to whet the appetite for another Ladi6 album. Following on from the 2010 release of The Liberation Of…, this upcoming third album is co-produced by Parks and Detroit native producer Waajeed. And although no album release tour has been announced yet, I’d place good money there’ll be one. I’d also pay good money to see her; that unique rapport with the audience, the serenades and smooth commanding raps, plenty of loud shaking bass with veins of soul, funk and dub threaded throughout.
Riding high on the recent release of their self-titled live EP, Bat Country are all swampy, swaggery, foot stomping, ass shaking, dirty electric rock ‘n’ roll blues. The twisted brain child of Nina McSweeney and Brendan Turner, these two are involved in numerous musical endeavours; Turner is a bass player for Bond Street Bridge and solo artist/songwriter in his own right, as is McSweeney, who released The Bittersweet Sea earlier this year, a haunting mix of blues and alt folk. As Bat Country, McSweeney is on vocals, harmonica, blues harp and thigh-bruising tambourine, while Turner also contributes vocals, electric slide guitar and the stomp box. There’s no denying this pair are talented, not to mention multifaceted, and as the dirty delta blues duo Bat Country they shock and astound.

THE ODD CHAPS DEVILSKIN The individual members of the alt-rock metal band Devilskin have managed to secure a number of accolades and accomplishments with former projects so who knows what they’ll achieve with their powers combined. Jennie Skulander on vocals has an impressive ability to sweep from whisper to roar, while Nail – from popular Waikato band Chuganaut, who won the World Battle Of The Bands in 2004 – plays lead guitar. With an aggressive and propulsive style Paul Martin plays bass, also well known as The Axeman on The Rock’s radio show The Axe Attack. Paul isn’t the only Martin though, after his son Nic Martin joined Devilskin as the drummer in August 2011 at age 15 and continues to display power and passion.
SAL VALENTINE & THE BABYSHAKES Sal Valentine & The Babyshakes recently released their debut single ‘I Ain’t Seen Nothing Like You’, and, well I ain’t heard nothing like this for a while and I like it a lot. Mixing rhythm and blues, swingin’ soul and a jazzy jive, this is big band sound at its best. Sal Valentine & The Babyshakes are doing something refreshingly different by looking back to the early twentieth century swing era - and though the style may be drawing inspiration from days gone by, this music still feels modern and contemporary. Having missed their performances as part of the Auckland Fringe Festival I can only hope they’ve got something planned for NZMM… preferably a clandestine meeting in some secret little bar that’s dimly lit, hazy with cigarette smoke.
Josh Griggs and Sam Brandford are cousins, but also related through a shared love of music as The Odd Chaps. The 17/18-year-old duo have been producing different styles of electronic music for a while now, with a number of EP’s already under their belt. Add to this the recent release of their debut LP Limitless, through Get Loaded Records, and 2013 is looking like a good year for these young chaps. Featuring seven tracks ranging from orchestral electro, progressive house, club bangers and even a funky remix there’s something for everyone on Limitless. And the dynamic duo is also in the process of putting together a live set up that promises something a little different.
SHAPESHIFTER Shapeshifter have announced the release date of their fifth studio album, Delta, as Fri 31 May – sounds like the perfect way to finish off NZMM to me! Recorded in Berlin, Woodhill and Wellington, and featuring the recently released single ‘Gravity’, this album will no doubt showcase new sonic terrain and influences for the band. Across their career Shapeshifter have made genredefining appearances at Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Big Day Out plus performances across Europe, collabs with Symphony Orchestras and multiple awards. And Delta is their fifth studio album, which is no mean feat in itself, following previous albums that have achieved platinum status within NZ. Expect heavy soul, layers of drum n bass, jazz, funk, rock and electronica, morphing from rolling drum n bass to pummeling guitar-driven jams and horizon-shifting electronic soundscapes.
THE UPBEATS In today’s heady climate of bass-fuelled dance music it’s nice to see producer/DJ/beatmakers emerging from their bedrooms and finally finding the spotlight. A pair that has been walking that road for a number of years already are The Upbeats, with their anythinggoes live performance and hard-hitting, unique drum & bass sound. Nicknamed Terror Snake and Downie Wolf respectively, Jeremy Glenn and Dylan Jones have a love of fast breakbeats and low-slung bass lines, coupled with a passion for creating their own music. After a massive set at Homegrown earlier this year and a tour of USA/Europe The Upbeats return to celebrate the release of their fourth studio album Primitive Technique – some incredible and impeccable drum & bass spread across 14 tracks and the Primitive Technique Tour and release parties during NZMM.
JON LEMMON Jon Lemmon has been working on a new album for a while now, but due to being the sort of person that likes to experiment and isn’t so much into finishing things, this is still a work in progress. Despite this he’s got a number of EP’s and singles on Bandcamp and the recent release of a track ‘Exodus I’ a few months back; performed by Lemmon, mixed by Ryan Prebble and Lemmon at Surgery Studios, mastered by Mike Gibson, with additional parts performed by Toby Laing and Sage Kamaru (keeping good company right). This one can be filed under experimental, electronic, indie, and maybe even post-apocalyptic… even though the brief was apparently for something light and carefree for a summer compilation. An audience member thinks, ‘Oh I’m gonna stump you with this one.’ “Someone will always ask a question like how big is your junk or is true what they say about black men. There’s always gonna be someone that writes that question, lowest common denominator that guy. So to the most part what I try to do is tell the audience to think outside of what you know, then you can try to give me things that are bigger, better, badder for the A-plus.” Having been the poster child of improvisation TV show Whose Line is it Anyway? since the mid-90s, the 40-year-old actor knows a thing or two about the craft. It’s been his “thing” since he was 16, developing his talent at a community improve group in Orlando. But that’s not what makes his personal shows stand out – it’s the other abilities (singing, dancing, rapping) that he brings to the table. He says it’s those other skills which are the key to good improvisation. “I think any other gifts you have – singer, dancer, contortionist – whatever, anything else you can do that you can bring into for the show element, that makes you different from every kind of improvisation/ actor, because if you’re a good improviser, you have good listening skills, good communication and that’s what a scene basically is. Everything on top of that makes you uniquely funny.” For someone who has done nearly everything in the entertainment world – released an album, guest starred in a number for TV shows, played game show host – is there still something yet to tick off?
THE BRADY BUNCH Nothing surprises Wayne Brady anymore. After more than 20 years in the business, it’s hard to keep the actor-comedian-improvisation genius on his toes – even if audiences still try to catch him out. Word of advice for fans heading to his show on May 5: Don’t try too hard. “I don’t get surprised a ton because what I’ve learned by doing these shows for so many years is people are people, no matter what the culture is,” he explains. “There’s a certain collective pool that people pull from

This month, as part of the NZ International Comedy Festival, the Wayans Brothers put on their stand-up comic hats and put their improvisation to the test – and Shaun’s expecting to be tested, he always is. “I’ve had a couple [of horror stories],” he shares. “Way back in the day – you get those all the time, that’s what makes you better. They’ve been hit and miss, you get booed, heckled, you get all that. You just got to stick with it. It’s like boxing – you get knocked out, you go home and watch the tape, and go, ‘Man I can’t do that no more’, then you make an adjustment.” The multitalented performer has many arrows in his quiver, so to speak, and says there isn’t one that hits the mark more than the others, but it’s just opportunities to do things different creatively in each medium. “It’s like having children: You don’t love one over the other. Film is gratifying in that you write something and shoot it, and have that time with the people, the crew that you shoot it with, y’all become like a family.
BROTHERS IN ARMS Growing up the second youngest of 10 exceptionally talented brothers and sisters lends itself to suffering from a serious case of sibling rivalry. But for Shaun Wayans, it was never a matter of competition. “When we are at dinner, we’re just chilling out and then someone does something funny, everyone joins in and does something funny too, just because that’s the kind of energy, so we get competitive there, but as far as complete in the ‘biz it’s not what we do. I think we are more competitive with ourselves to do the best job we can. “Growing up in a large family was great, we had a great time. We didn’t have much material stuff, but we had a lot of laughs. So you know, we were forced to use our imagination and creativity because we didn’t

I just want to say this up front: Halfway through the story mode, Green Arrow says “shit.” It’s not a spoiler, naturally, but it tells you a little about the tone of the game. This is a not a bright, cartoon-style fighting game like Marvel vs Capcom; this is dark, like verging on Garth Ennis but staying close to Grant Morrison. The superheroes in the game all take a pill “based on Kryptonian technology” that makes them as tough as Superman (but doesn’t give them laser eyes and flight), which explains how they’re able to fight each other on an “even” playing field (something you may have been wondering, based on the premise.) Story Mode - the meat of the game - is slick. It follows a narrative and is interspersed with multiple cut scenes that are reminiscent of many recent animated movies. The voice acting is, as you’d expect by now, superb, and the Joker genuinely made me laugh - though not while he was wielding his knife. Where in a comic or movie there would be a fight scene (which is quite often, when superheroes are involved), a battle is triggered. It doesn’t cover all of the characters, but you get all the main ones (including Batman.) Sadly, once you play through the story, there’s no real incentive to replay it as the plot will never change. The actual fighting gameplay was surprisingly simplistic. The move lists are long but not too complex and chaining combos together was simple even for a moderately terrible but enthusiastic player like myself. Each move has all of the frame data alongside it for those of you who are serious about your fighting. What does separate the characters are their powers; Green Arrow has special arrows, the Flash makes his opponent move slower, and Catwoman can unleash an unblockable combo. Plus, Superman punches people into SPACE! So it’s clearly embracing its comic book heritage. Injustice is an incredibly fun bit of fantasy fulfillment as you get to test Earth’s mightiest heroes (cough) against each other. It is also a very dark look at these heroes and villains. As you fight you gain bloody damage and the end scenes for some of the villains can be quite disturbing, unless you think the Joker setting fire to someone is something you’d like to see over and over. In São Paulo, the scheme of the corrupt DA Agent Júlia (Negrini), her lawyer mate Henrique and gangster Maicon is discovered and reported to the Internal Affairs. Maicon is responsible for kidnappings, murderers and heists, and his only chance of escaping the charges is the support of powerful assemblyman Jader Kerteis, who demands $2 million to help him. Meanwhile “paulistano” Edgar, who killed a mother and her son two years ago in a car accident, invites thief Velinha to hijack the courier that’s carrying the money pouch to be delivered to Jader and steal it.
How are their lives intertwined? The audience cannot help but cheer on protagonist Edgar, who approaching his 30th birthday and simultaneously the end of his patience, concocts a vigilante solution which pits criminal against politician. His brilliant plot to get the forces of evil to face off with one another takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride, steering us quickly into many dark corners. Beyond his disgust with the system, Edgar’s true intentions and sordid past are revealed. The general public is forewarned: Use the restroom before the film begins and pay close attention throughout!
