PLAYING GEORGIE PIE FAVourites

As of early next month Georgie Pie will return, but not as a standalone restaurant. 11 McDonald’s restaurants in the Auckland and Waikato will be selling the Steak Mince ‘N’ Cheese pies for $4.50.

JARRED CHRISTMAS COMEDIAN

Simon Kenny, McDonald’s Head of Communications said this was a pilot project but the return of stand-alone Georgie Pie restaraunts was possible. “To set up a McDonald’s restaurant costs typically between four and five million dollars and a standalone Georgie Pie restaurant would be a similar cost,” Kenny said. “So to jump in and build a standalone restaurant in a trial wouldn’t make sense, but you never say never.” The pies will be made as close as possible to the original recipe, the only change made was the removal of MSG. Additionally the pies will be made at the original pie production plant in Manukau by Goodman Fielder.

Your house is on fire, what do save? My wife and kids, and my laptop. I then take time to throw all my loan agreements, tax and late payment letters into the heart of the fire. Save the insurance docs though... Obviously. Favourite ‘90s TV show? The X-Files and Whose Line Is It Anyway? Dream job as a kid? A Navy Seal. First album? The soundtrack to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, featuring MC Hammer and a track called ‘Spin that Wheel.’ Classics? If you weren’t a comedian, what would you be? Depressed OR a Navy Seal. Ultimate festival line-up? Headliner: Michael Jackson. Support from: The Killers, The Rapture, MF Doom and Rodriguez. Who would play you in a film? Jack Black or The Rock. Depends which version of me they do. The dream or the truth. How do you discover new comedians? I work with them. I host a lot of new act finals in the UK. I’ve hosted the RAW final in New Zealand and met some great new Kiwi comics.

Pies will be launched at McDonald’s Queen Street and Greenlane, and the rollout will further to St Lukes Mall, Mangere, Ti Rakau Drive, Kelston and Hamilton’s Frankton, 5 Crossroads, The Base and Te Awamutu. McDonald’s says the pies may become available nationwide with the potential of more flavours being added to the menu. McDonald’s Managing Director, Patrick Wilson said, “We understand the passion Georgie Pie evokes for New Zealanders,” Wilson said. “It’s part of our popular culture and bringing it back is a big responsibility. We’re committed to delivering to the original recipe and treating the Georgie Pie brand with the respect it deserves.”

gig OF THE WEEK

BOBBY WOMACK THE CIVIC

8PM, $67.50, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

8PM, $72.40-120, THE-EDGE.CO.NZ

We were always taught as children to be afraid of giants, but never fear – these guys have no intention of grinding down your bones to make bread. The Two Johns – John Linnell on keyboards and accordion, and John Flansburgh on guitar – formed in Brooklyn, New York. Their catchy melodies are delivered with a knowing wink and a sly bit of humor.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bobby Womack is a fighter. He’s overcome drug addiction, heart failure and even Alzheimer’s (apparently). Just to see this living legend in the flesh is an honour. He wrote The Rolling Stone’s hit ‘It’s All Over Now’, helped struggling artists and he’s a pioneer of R&B and soul.

Call me ‘Loyal’ – are you loyal too? Ol’ Dobbyn is celebrating music month with a twist. He’s invited a mix of established and emerging songwriters to join him onstage to perform their favourite tracks of his. In return he performs with his guests on their own songs. It should make for some interesting collaborations and interpretations.

TOUR

Expectation runs high in anticipation of Vampire Weekend’s third studio album. The New York indie rockers rise to fame since their self-titled debut in 2008 has been swift, built on the backs of two artfully raucous experimental albums and their laborious perfectionism. The first thing that pops out in album three, Modern Vampires Of The, City is the comparatively mellowed approach their direction in song writing has taken. The new set of 12 tracks are subtle and none of them really have that same kind of boomstomp face-slap about them that tracks like ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’ and ‘Cousins’ emitted. It’s not horrible though, no. It’s just a wee bit different and it feels all grown up. It’s tempting to pull the concept album stamp out and press it firmly onto the eerie mist draped black and white New York City standing forebodingly in the album cover. Lyrically MVOTC deconstructs NYC and plays out a bit like an exploration of American literature (conveniently timed for F. Scott’s movie adaption one wonders?). There’s the usual poetic voice but where the album really shines is underneath its musicianship. Incredibly controlled yet impassionedly layered, put simply; there’s a whole lot of shit going down in there. The variety of instrumental layers incorporated makes you wonder if an epic multi-instrumentalist like Regine Chassagne or Sufjan Stevens was thrown into the recording studio at gunpoint.

Piano’s, organs, violins, a stray flute and drummer Chris Tomson had a field day with percussion. You’d expect something to go wrong really easily with layered intensity however the restraint shown is impeccable. Lead tracks ‘Dianne Young’ and ‘Step’ are already lurking about but there are plenty of treasures hiding within. ‘Hannah Hunt’ builds into something of a rolling skank; Ezra Koenig tumbles about with it singing beautifully without his effect box. ‘Everlasting Arms’ keeps in pattern though the bass is a bit stronger and there are poignant violins. One of the best songs is ‘Hudson’; creeping in as almost spoken word it builds intensely with a pernicious bearing and layers in a very Gregorian feeling choir. Hudson and the album alike spend a lot of time building tension that never really amounts to anything. Deconstructed MVOTC is great but left to play out it in the background it just passes by – it will never be a Contra. WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER

SPRING BREAKERS

JONES!, 8.30PM

From the auteur who brought you Mulholland Dr, Blue Velvet and Eraserhead comes his equally as disturbing and disjointed masterpiece TV series. THU 16 MAY

Starring SELENA GOMEZ, VANESSA HUDGENS, ASHLEY BENSON, james franco

BROKEN GENERAL RELEASE

Heavily inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird, and based on the novel of the same name, this British flick is a film festival favourite. A coming-of-age drama, the movie centres on Skunk, an eight-year-old diabetic girl, who forms an unusual friendship with a young man called Rick. But there’s something not quite right.

SNITCH GENERAL RELEASE

It’s the year of The Rock – with GI Joe, Fast and Furious…whatever we are up to now…and now Snitch, this guy is everywhere. This is possibly the most serious flick of the three, focusing on a father who goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.

Part indie festival fare and part T&A exploitation flick, Spring Breakers is going to attract aficionados of either genre – as well as an inevitable wave of barely legal thrill seekers – but Harmony Korine’s oddly emotionally distant blend of styles isn’t likely to completely satisfy either camp’s initial expectations. There’s perhaps too true a depiction of young ‘uns (in all their annoying naïve dumbass glory) as well as too excessive a use of dubstep for the arthouse crowd. And those seeking to revel in those exact elements may be thrown by the film’s often-slow pace and predilection for repetition and dreamy meandering when what they’re really after is more nudity, gunplay and bass. Perhaps this confounding of expectations is what Korine had in mind, or maybe the film simply evolved that way as the 40-year-old finally indulged in a spring break of his own. Either way, Spring Breakers is

its own beast, a simultaneous celebration and criticism of youth and narcissism that posits the pursuit of selfishness and hedonism as the American Dream while not being entirely clear on whether this is an amazing or terrible thing. Further challenging preconceptions, the chronically overexposed James Franco turns in one of his best performances as gangster and rapper Alien, which on form alone should’ve been unwatchable. The quartet of youngsters at the film’s core also impress, the film reminiscent of Kids - Korine’s breakout as a screenwriter – in its depiction of youth seemingly far more truthful in spirit than Hollywood’s, and also when Korine approaches Larry Clark levels of lecherousness as the camera lingers on their scantily-clad frames. MADE FROM SCRATCH MADEFROMSCRATCH.CO.NZ

In 2010, Rachael McMahon developed her blog as a personal collection of treasures to be kept in one sweet place – an online journal of baking creations, recipes and inspiration in the lead up to her wedding day. It’s now become a trove of simple, delicious home baking which you can learn at one of her awesome classes.

MONSOON POON 12 BLAIR ST

FOOD TRUCK GARAGE

As dirty as the name sounds (for those with the mind of a 15-year-old), Monsoon Poon is a vibrant restaurant that offers choices from the exotic flavours of India, South China, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

No doubt you have seen the hit TV show where chef Michael Van de Elzen goes around, parking up his truck, and cooks healthy alternatives to popular fast foods. He’s been doing it for a while and produced some pretty informative (and delicious) cookbooks. Then, he had this great idea – what if the truck parked up, in a garage so to speak, and continued to serve the same great food from the show all week round? So that’s exactly what he did. The Food Truck Garage is open seven days a week with a comprehensive menu of takeaway delights, such as hot dogs, burgers, fries – but with no added fat or gross stuff. It’s pretty hip, so check out to be part of the social revolution. Visit foodtruckgarage.co.nz

AVIDA 132 FEATHERSTON ST

A little bit of Mediterranean hospitality in the heart of Wellington, Avida Bar is all about tapas. They are also all about Kiwi and imported beers and wine, and a premium selection of spirits. If it’s a casual affair, or you’re out to impress your boss at a business-style setting, it can definitely cater to all kinds of groups.

PORTHOLE BAR 42 LONDON ST, LYTTELTON

Part of the container culture, Porthole is a “temporary” bar located where the iconic Volcano Cafe and Lava Bar used to stand. Serving local craft beers, espressos and from the menu toasties, platters and burritos, Porthole is another fine example of Kiwi ingenuity.

FUKUKO

Sake may be to Japan what vodka is to Russia, but at Fukuko it’s all about shochu. This traditional Japanese spirit lends itself to gorgeously-flavoured infusions, taking on and enhancing whatever flavours you marry it to: Earl Grey or juniper, chargrilled pineapple or cucumber, raisin or berry. Fukuko’s cocktail list offers its own take on the classics, such as a Japanese gimlet using a triple citrus infusion or the Pimm’s-chanelling Fukuko No. 1 Cup, infused with orange and sweet vermouth. But never fear sake lovers, they’ve also got it good to go and the biggest range of Japanese whiskies in New Zealand.

It’s in a manner that is both highly self-reflexive (given the title of the magazine) and almost borderline sarcastic, like a test. It’s the kind of attitude one would expect from rocker and comedian Jack Black. The ying to Black’s yang, Kyle Gass – or KG as he is referred to throughout the interview – is far more forthcoming, but never shies away from giving into Black’s jokes. The interview begins with a tête-àtête between the two musicians about Gass’ beard. “Today I went and bought some soil and flowers, and a beard trimmer. I’m gonna start working on my beard. I needed a project,” says Kyle with all seriousness in his voice. “You just doing a little face gardening? Some manscaping?” Black plays along. “It’s been going a while, I feel like I look like a grizzled homeless dude,” Gass retorts. “You gotta listen to all your friends who say let it grow,” Black emphatically pleading his case. “Let it grow wild. You’ve got to trust in the Gandalf the Grey. I think it’ll morph into a distinguished, very sexy beast.” Never sure whether they are taking the piss or giving you a straight answer, both Black and Gass know to play the game and understand that with the persona of Tenacious D comes a certain kind of je ne sais quoi that gives them their identity. This identity being to never take anything too seriously. Except music. The boys are touring as an acoustic duo on their first tour of New Zealand since their last run supporting the Foo Fighters in 2011. It’s their first trip here since the release of their Grammy-nominated third album, Rize Of The Fenix, which they have been touring for the last year “all across the great land” of the US. “The audiences have welcomed us with open arms with a fire in their belly and a scream in their heart,” Black says, putting emphasis for dramatic effect. “All but Miami. For some reason they have turned their back on the rock, all they’re into is house music.” “They like the disco beats,” Gass clarifies. “It’s been a rousing success,” Black goes on. “Me and KG look at each other and we just have a slow nod and meaningful eye contact of

understanding. I think what we’re trying to communicate to each other is we’ve still got it. We’re special and we deserve this.” It wasn’t always a rousing success for the group however – their last effort, The Pick of Destiny, was met with critical and commercial failure. The 2006 movie fell short of its estimated US$40 million marketing costs, with Black admitting at the time that it “bombed”. “We couldn’t crack the code on the trailer,” Black explains with deadpan seriousness as to why the movie didn’t succeed. “You shouldn’t make a movie until you have made the trailer. You should really start with the trailer. No, I don’t fucking know, it’s a strange alchemy the industry, but I’m very proud of the movie, I don’t think anything went wrong, it went exactly right. It went how we wanted it to go.” Ending on a high point, as they say, they band bowed out, took some time out and – like a phoenix from the ashes – emerged with the new, more powerful album in 2012. Although their critical hiccup is addressed on the title and opening track, the rest of the album is classic Tenacious D, covering everything from love, sex and food. And although their previous work covered a lot of drug use, it’s not the secret to their comedic lyrics – or so they say. “We don’t partake in the libations when writing. We never booze it up,” says Black. “I’m really into my E-cigarette right now,” Gass interjects. “What do we do?” Black adds. “We just go into the office, we check in, we punch the clock, we nose to the grindstone, once again, lots of meaningful eye contact, some heated exchanges, some looking into each other souls saying ‘Is there anything in there, hello?’ We’ll just sit there for days and weeks. Many times we have come to the edge, and then we have come back. You can’t kill it.” So with a refreshed energy and a “can’t-hold-us-down” vibe, Black concludes that Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch should be in for “the greatest concert experience of your lives” – if they do say so themselves. By Motorheadphones These over-the-ear, over-the-standard headphones are for the person who wants a mighty punch with slightly less heft on the head.

This alone is one of the reasons I enjoyed using the Microsoft Surface RT and would petition our office to change to them. It’s touch screen makes it easy to flick between programmes, documents, web pages, games and type – all without a single click! Using the usual desktop utilities, such as Excel and PowerPoint, took a little getting used to with the touch screen, but it was a breeze when using the keyboard attachment. It’s very light and compact so easy to fit into a regular-sized handbag/satchel and not need to haul around an awkward (and unattractive) laptop bag. The charger is the size of a phone charger with a handy clip to keep it wrapped up instead of the usual tangled mess.

Think about it… really listen… You’re in a shared office space trying to concentrate on work/ playing-that-all-too-important-game-that-oncecompleted-means-you-can-get-back-to-work-for -real and there is the continual *click click click*, *tap tap tap* of mice and keys. Bring in the Microsoft Surface RT and with it comes silence – and if the boss is lucky a little more productivity!

Rockshop.co.nz

There are few things that could be improved in the future. One is the sensitivity of the screen as at times it stalls a little with typing quickly, makes copying and pasting text a little difficult, and sometimes the drop down menus on web pages can’t be used correctly as “clicking” it doesn’t allow the menu to remain down. The other is the angle that it can be tilted at. The stand allows it to be adjusted to a suitable degree when using the removable keyboard or laid flat to use the touch screen, but I think being able to raise it up just a few centimetres from a flat surface would allow the screen keyboard be used a more comfortably.

THE LAST OF US JOEL EDITION OR ELLIE EDITION By Naughty Dog

Set 20 years after a pandemic has infected humans who now run wild and the survivors are killing each other for food and weapons. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14 year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, resulting in a brutal journey across the U.S.

I would also like to see the back of the Surface RT have a non-slip coating/a removable cover as not all of us like watching movies sitting upright at a table – some prefer to be slumped on a couch or chair balancing a laptop on our stomachs and suffering from heat rash from overheating batteries. No heat rash from the Surface RT, but it does tend to slip and slide! Do I recommend it? Yes! Absolutely! In something that weighs less than a bag of sugar, it combines all you could want for leisure and office use which I think hasn’t quite been mastered yet by other products.

Nothing beats hanging around the house wearing a brand new onesie.

What’s the must-have look this season? I’m very much a fan of a good, clean, classic look. You gotta hit that perfect balance between dressing to impress and keeping it a bit casual. Basically follow your heart as closely as you can without looking like a complete twat is a good rule to live by.

Colours/patterns big this season? Some nice subtle stripes always go down a treat. Subtle anything really. Subtle floral patterns are something that I wish I could pull off cause there’s a lot of that kinda thing floating around. Blue is my favourite colour at the moment, though I’m not sure why.

What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Janelle Monae is about the classiest person I can think of. In an age where female pop stars are encouraged to dress as scandalous and provocative as possible, Janelle refuses to rock out in anything other than a Tuxedo. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Girls’ cut-off denim shorts that are so short that the pockets visibly hang down. I don’t understand it, nor do I like it.

WAFFLE ONESIE METALLICA VANS - james hetfield

Which historical figure had some wicked style? Salvador Dali, based on his moustache alone. He combined the right amount of swankiness with a healthy dose of crazy weirdness, which earns him a lot of respect in my book. He also tried his hand at a bit of surreal fashion design over the years, which is pretty cool.

What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A lot of ladies have been donning nice warm beanies lately. Pretty spot on for those with short hair. Apart from that, generally similar sort of wintery things… coats, etc. Everyone should own at least one good… Conscience. Do YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? MAGICIAN JINGER LEIGH EXPLAINS HER CRAFT AHEAD OF HER PERFORMANCE WITH THE ILLUSIONISTS.

“Broomsticks and potions… no. Secrets and spells…Yes! That’s why they call me ‘The Enchantress’,” Jinger Leigh says with a smile. Described as a “modern day witch”, the performer has redefined the role a magician, removing the ancient stereotypes of burning women at the cross and turning it into an art of wonder and entertainment. Growing up an only child in southern Connecticut – which she describes as a suburban area an hour outside of New York – she was your typical spoilt child (with love, that is), but was also painfully shy as a young girl, turning to performance to come out of her shell. “I was driven to only express myself on stage through dance and acting since the age of four. I grew up on the stage and it’s where I feel most powerful.” She began taking dancing lessons and started her professional career when she was just 15 years old, touring around the US with Disney. While she says she has “always had a fascination with what small bits of illusion that I saw through television”, Jinger didn’t realise it was going to be her calling until she “saw some live, that it inspired me”. Little did she known the man behind the magic tricks was her future husband, Mark Kalin. She was instantly impressed with not only his abilities, but his rapport with the audience. As it would happen, fate brought the two together: “We were working in the same production show on the island of Guam,” she says of their meeting. “I offered to fill into his act for a while and never left!” But this was no magicians assistance role – Jinger became much more than the woman in the box. “We had to find a special combination that made the most of our performances and created our own sort of magic,” Mark was previously quoted as saying. “When choosing new material, you have to consider many things at once,” Jinger says. “What will be new for the audiences, what inspires, yet challenges ourselves and them? Once the idea is chosen it’s all in the development and execution. It’s a fairly long, but exciting process. It takes lots of planning, rehearsal, and tweaking to make something look great.” The signature tricks include the ‘Fire Spiker’, ‘Circle of Fire’ and ‘Sawing in Half ‘– all of which sound like a dicey encounter with death around every corner. “Yes, I have a few scars to prove it!” she says with a laugh. “It’s sort of essential that there be real danger involved in certain types of illusion. Just enough to make the spectators feel comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time!” Their routine also includes the mother of tricks: Levitation. Beginning in a seated position, poised on her throne, The Enchantress elevates herself to unbelievable heights using two large poles, but before you can take it all in, the poles are removed, leaving her hovering above her throne. “I am very proud of my levitation,” Jinger explains, trying hard not to give away her trade secrets. “I really believe in it… and I think that’s why it is so strongly believed by the audiences. I am sharing something impossible with them and they are right there with me… Literally!” Belief or disbelief aside, you’ll have the chance to see Jinger and Kalin as part of The Illusionists – a show which brings together seven internationally renowned grand master magicians performing a stunning mix of the most outrageous and unbelievable optical illusions. “I think, as with all good entertainment, whenever you can make someone feel something with a true emotion it is addictive!” Jinger says of the show’s popularity. “Magic has that wide appeal. It’s not all the same emotion and not the same demographic either. A child of nine will look at illusion and feel a completely different emotion than a child of 89.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER
