Founding member of The Doors Ray Manzarek passed away at the age of 74 after a long battle with bile duct cancer at a clinic in Rosenheim, Germany. “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” Doors guitarist Robby Krieger said, “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.” Bill Siddons, the band’s manager during the 60’s, said it was a “tremendous loss” to musical culture. “He understood what Jim’s talent was, and he put the band together to make it work,” he said. “The Doors really had a huge impact, and still do, on our musical culture.”

Converse announces the launch of their Get Loud music series, a six-city live music series showcasing performances from 15 of the region’s most exciting emerging music talent and international artists. Get Loud is a Converse initiative continuing the brand’s commitment to supporting local music scenes and delivering fresh experiences to music fans across the region. Inspired by the Converse seasonal brand expression “Shoes Turn It Down, Sneakers Get Loud”, the Get Loud music series celebrates the rebellious and gloriously chaotic spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. Closely following Microsoft’s announcement of the Xbox One, Ubisoft have announced two games for the console and say there will be six games released during the systems first year. More information about the titles expected during this year’s E3 conference. “The next generation of consoles will reinvigorate our industry and make it possible for us to deliver incredible new entertainment to gamers,” said Yves Guillemot, co-founder and chief executive officer, Ubisoft. “Our teams are using the innovations in connectivity, immersion and social gaming included in Xbox One to create original and memorable next-gen gaming experiences.” The two titles announced thus far are: Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag tells the story of Edward Kenway, a young British man with a thirst for danger and adventure, who falls from privateering for the Royal Navy into piracy as the war between the major Empires comes to an end.

Jay-Z and film director Baz Luhrman spent an alleged two years translating Fitzgerald’s beloved Jazz Age sensibility into the musical equivalents of our own times, an effort to sonically mimic the extravagance and illusion seen in the classic novel. Luhrman has a knack for bringing adaptations to life through music, as displayed on his previous film Romeo + Juliet. He hits the mark once more. While Jay-Z’s role as executive producer for both the album and film signalled an overriding urbanvibe, the variety of styles interwoven throughout make for a cohesive collection that play to the narrative’s many strengths. The result is a concoction of hip-hop, electronic and pop elements injected with orchestral and jazz snippets. All the ecstasy of the Jazz Age are found in tracks like will.i.am’s ‘Bang Bang’, a thumping banger laced with brass and swing detours. Coco O’s ‘Where The Wind Blows’ is a perky neo-soul number that bebops and jives with fractured keys and scattered drum beats, while Emile Sande’s ‘Crazy in Love’ cover breathes new polka-stomp life into a Beyonce classic. Yes, there is an undeniable playfulness to the soundtrack, but it’s not without a foreshadowing darkness smudged around the edges. At the heart of Fitzgerald’s masterpiece is a tale of doomed love, a theme extracted by the likes of Lana Del Ray and Florence, both of whom bring their best pipes and sweeping strings along for a
glimpse of the film’s heavier heart wrenching moments. Perhaps the darkest cut is Andre 3000 and Beyonce’s cover of ‘Back To Black’. Subtly warped electronics build before a Kill Bill-esque guitar takes the track to melancholic waters, made all the more dramatic considering Amy Winehouse’s passing. When the soundtrack isn’t pumping the 1920’s into modern nuggets, it still manages to reference the film in some way or another, with Jay Z adopting a modern day Gatsby persona in ‘100$ Bill’. Jack White’s U2 cover may be the only contender from Rock, but he makes his point wailing in torment the way only Mr. White can. A sure album standout. The Great Gatsby Soundtrack is both fun and dark, with plenty of variety, and nods to the past while pushing towards the future; an equal mash-up of the artistic visions of Fitzgerald, Buhrmann and Jay-Z. Oh, and one last thing - Fergie should never, ever feature on anything Gatsby related. Bad Fergie, bad. WRITTEN BY JAMES MANNING

The pointed title of writer/director Nadav Lapid’s debut Policeman might suggest a straightforward cop movie, but it definitely isn’t one. This is an assured, willfully detached, almost ascetic socio-political drama that uses the role of the police to probe the topical issue of class divide in modern Israeli society. Adopting a neutral position, Lapid employs an unusuall, risky structure which is hesitant to assign a single, guiding protagonist to provide a clear perspective. The film follows one group of characters for about 40 minutes before abandoning them to track another. The first section establishes a sort-of protagonist in Yaron (Yiftach Klein), a member of Israel’s elite counterterrorist squad. We immediately observe a strength of identity that seemingly can’t be challenged: At home, Yaron’s a supportive and proud father-to-be, while at work he’s part of a brutish, rock-solid, almost comically
masculine brotherhood hard-wired to hunt down Arab terrorists. The status quo is upended though, when the film shifts focus to a band of discontented, naive, fame-seeking rich Jewish kids hoping to become revolutionaries by taking some billionaires hostage. The film’s low-boil remove may be alienating for viewers requiring sympathetic characters or narrative signposts to latch on to – indeed, someone like Shira (Yaara Pelzig), the young rebel who wears a blankness generally reserved for the films of Robert Bresson, is more difficult to identify with than anyone in Yaron’s world, which is depicted in universal codes of family and togetherness. But Lapid lands a gut-punch once their paths intersect in the riveting climax, bringing home realities – both political and psychological – that aren’t as cut-and-dry as either party would like to believe. Just LIKE CLOCKWORK Back in June 2011, Queens’ bandleader Josh Homme announced that a new Queens Of The Stone Age album would be completed by the end of the year. And although it wasn’t, the old adage “Good things take time,” immediately springs to mind. Formed from the ashes of rock icons Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age have become one of the most engaging and ambitious hard rock groups. Combining stoner-rock, metal and garage-rock into a mixture that’s both challenging and accessible, QOTSA have pursued an agenda of moody, sexy, high-energy rock that flaunts its danger and oddness, winning over fans and critics in the process. ... Like Clockwork is set to be the band’s first full-length collection of all new material since 2007’s Era Vulgaris, as well as the band’s debut release on new label partner Matador. As the time draws closer and the hype builds for the band’s sixth studio album, it seems this has got to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Fair enough too; self-produced by the band, this is the first QOTSA album to feature full contributions from bassist Michael Shuman and keyboardist and guitarist Dean Fertita (who both joined the band in 2007). Add to this the impressive list of heavyweights involved in the recording process - Dave Grohl, The Mars Volta’s Jon Theodore, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner, vocalist Mark Lanegan, ex-QOTSA bassist Nick Oliveri, and even Elton John and Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears – and there’s definitely plenty to get excited about! The hard-hiting bassline of opener ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled’ is daring, with Jake Shears is in there somewhere. Bursts of guitar arrive in tangles and swirls, before moving on to the radio friendly ‘Sat By The Ocean’. It’s a solid QOTSA track with a central riff that provides a stomping ground for Homme to wail along to. Things get serious with ‘The Vampyre of Time and Memory’, along with Grohl’s first appearance and some subtle, harmonic backing vocals that tailor the dark, pensive track. ‘If I Had a Tail’ is a meeting point for

some more cameos - a bluesy sort of groove and just the cue for Arctic Monkeys front-man Alex Turner to weave his way into the record. ‘My God Is The Sun’ is another radio-friendly track, and the first new material to be heard when the album was announced. Stopping quite suddenly, the next track - ‘Kalopsia’ - is a trippy, space foray featuring Trent Reznor. ‘Fairweather Friends’ is Sir Elton’s soiree, where the piano entwines with classic QOTSA filth in a surprisingly cool way. ‘Smooth Sailing’ is another great track with those familiar guitar tones that many try (and usually fail) to replicate. It’s also, quite simply put, most arrogant track on the record. Penultimate track ‘I Appear Missing’ gives the first hint of finality, and the drum performance from Grohl on this drawling and broody number is awesome. This six-minute memoir saunters along before the title track brings us to a candid, definite end, and provides the listener with a sense of closure. …Like Clockwork the album is an invigorating, exciting ride, and a journey fans (both old and new) will likely want to take again and again. The recurring motif of the record - it’s plethora of superstars - are blended into the record as opposed to having huge or stand out moments. But let’s be honest, these “guests” don’t need a moment in the limelight and this helps keep …Like Clockwork a QOTSA record. More like an amalgamation of ideas and musical personalities, all the parts of this album are knitted in to the very fabric of its sum total, making it something well worth waiting for. THE WAIT IS OVER – SHAPESHIFTER RETURNS WITH A NEW ALBUM AND NATIONAL TOUR. Beer and chocolate cake. It’s a Kiwi kind of celebration fitting of drum & bass act Shapeshifter. Sitting in Universal Studios in Auckland, looking through the physical copies of their new album Delta, singer Paora “P Digsss” Apera says it is a “buzzy” feeling – and that’s not the beer talking – to have a record of what you did, all your hard work. Three years since their Platinum-selling record, The System is a Vampire, Delta comes not a moment too soon for fans. Digsss says it’s not like them to record on the road and since touring Europe (with a few summer festivals back home as well) has been a priority since the last release, an album was the last thing on their minds. “Sometimes, like, straight after you make an album, you tour. Sometimes you tour quite a bit and you don’t have time to make new music. We’re not the kind of band that brings our equipment on tour where we can record. We usually put a designated time and date aside and go in with that actual mindset of writing music.” Recorded in Berlin, Wellington and at producer Tiki Taane’s Woodhill studio, Delta is the embodiment of their exploration. The opening chords of ‘Arcadia’ and junglist jabs of ‘Shadowboxer’ juxtapose elevated trance progressions in ‘Diamond Trade’ and jagged guitar riffs on ‘Giving Up the Ghost’, building on Shapeshifter’s bass heritage while moving forward into the future. But being on the move and away from home hasn’t meant the group’s not keeping it real – as they always do – to produce their homegrown vibe, preferring intimate settings as opposed to multi-million dollar studios. “We had a few recording places, like The Blue Barn in Wellington – we wrote a big chunk of the album there – and our friend Tikki gave us his studio,” Digsss explains. “We recorded a lot of the actually music there and recorded a lot of the vocals at my house. The rest of the vocals were done in Welly. “We have collected a bunch of really nice gears through the year and just record wherever we feel comfy. We can pull off really good stuff from home so that ticks our boxes pretty well.”

And being comfortable, he adds, was the key ingredient for their fifth release. “[Making the album] was really cool fun,” says Digsss. “You know, you learn from every album – what to do, what not to do. On this album, we just learnt to make everyone comfortable, allow everyone to be comfortable at writing camp, at recording and that good vibe will tend to come through. It’s quite clichéd, but it’s quite straight forward. Just make everyone happy and you just make good music.” The boys did proceed to step out of their comfort zone with a move to Berlin – an artistic and creative hub that Digsss admits had a huge impact on the writing and direction of their latest sound, calling it same but different. “When we first started, we wrote a couple of ideas down and that’s what seeded the process, then we moved to Berlin because we wanted to be based there for a summer. We were trying to follow up some business, but it didn’t work out how we expected, but we spent six months there anyways. It was a nice situation where we lived, we started writing a few songs, like ‘Monarch’ got written there, and then when we came home it was all on. “It’s quite an amazing place. Being in Europe, being in that city, inspired us. I guess that would have come out in our music. It’s such a worldly place, a multicultural haven. It really came out in our sound, but it’s still very Shapeshifter, it’s still our love for New Zealand all in a song. Linking the album to the Twelve Mile Delta (a converging river near Queenstown), Digsss says Delta is a culmination of Shapeshifter sounds they have picked up throughout their career. “After a while, this is like a merging of all the albums, all the best bits of all the albums into one. It’s like the river, feeding with its nutrients, and that kind of speaks for this album.”

Called The Engineers, the villains of the piece announce their intention to take back the land and resources that the US once took from them. You need to go behind enemy lines and perform all manner of secret-squirrel operations that link together in a way that will, presumably, lead to you saving the world. New to the series, the game is now split into three distinct styles of play, called Ghost, Panther, and Assault. Ghost is for the really, really stealthy types. It’s about sneaking around, killing no one, and – where possible – getting in and out without anyone even knowing you were there. Panther takes a more middle ground approach: You still use stealth, but you kill as well via stealthy takedowns, mark-and-execute kills, etc. Assault, on the other hand, is a “guns blazing” approach, something that action gamers will be familiar with, but something that’s rarely used in previous Splinter Cell titles. Your actions award you points in one of the three disciplines – the more points you get, the more rewards you get that suit that discipline. Killing too many people can even change the story, apparently, although just how deeply is yet to be revealed. The cover system comes complete with the Ghost Recon-style ability to choose a location and have Sam scurry over to it using the most appropriate moves available at the time. Another skill that will be familiar to fans is Mark and Execute. With it, you can literally mark up to three enemies, which you then take down semiautomatically, in slow motion.

Splinter Cell has always been about stealth. Just one component of the multi-talented, Tom Clancy-themed, multi-armed, platformconsuming, multi-game monster. The franchise has focused on delivering an experience that’s more about getting the job done than encouraging violent mega-death- face explosions.
It’s looking very good indeed. The new gameplay options should make the game more accessible than ever to gamers who aren’t drawn to stealth games, seemingly without impacting the Ghost approach in any way whatsoever. And if that’s ultimately true, that’s quite a feat. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

THE NEED FOR SPEED IT ’S THE SAGA THAT KEEPS ON GIVING – PREPARE FOR THE HIGHOCTANE FAST & FURIOUS 6.
Believe it or not, the Fast & Furious franchise has done a lot for pop culture. It taught us that gawdy, fluro-coloured Mitsi-Evos were an acceptable mode of transport, that your average manual car has more than five gears (in fact, it has nearly one hundred) and it single-handedly spurred the boy racer culture of Christchurch. Now, more than 10 years later, the series has accumulated an astonishing $1.5 billion over five movies. After a shaky couple of sequels (Two Fast, Too Furious and Tokyo Drift), it has reinvented itself, bringing back the original cast members – let’s be honest, Paul Walker isn’t exactly busy these days –taking on the worthy ones from the two failed flicks, such as Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson, and turning it into more than just a street race, but a full-blown action flick with a purpose. Fast & Furious reinvigorated the series with beloved characters and an engaging storyline that hearkened back to its roots, and the action-thriller built upon that winning formula by injecting new heroes and elements into the storyline. Introducing Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs upped the stakes for our crew of antiheroes and expanding the scope of the film’s action proved to be an irresistible combination that electrified audiences, new and old alike. More importantly, the film stoked the flames of anticipation for die-hard fans who have been invested in the saga for more than a decade. The unimaginatively-titled Fast & Furious 6 picks up where we left off. After Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian’s (Paul Walker) Rio heist (number five) toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. Meanwhile, Hobbs (The Rock) has been tracking an organisation of skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Luke Evans) is aided by a ruthless secondin-command – revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (everyone’s favourite Michelle Rodriguez). Although fans were beyond eager for Letty to return, it was quite an unex30

pected turn of events for Rodriguez, who originated the role in The Fast and the Furious and returned for Fast & Furious. “I found out about the tease at the end of Fast Five when I went to see the film,” she recalls. “I was vacationing in Paris and went to see it in a French movie theatre, and there it was at the end. I was excited by it all because Fast Five was so amazing, and there was a very real possibility of bringing me back to do Fast & Furious 6. I keep joking with Vin that he should have given me at least a little bit of a heads-up!” Director Justin Lin, who first came onboard with Tokyo Drift, says Fast & Furious 6 truly is a completion of everything he first talked about with Vin Diesel. It was about coming back full circle. “We started discussing how to create mythology and how Han and Dom were linked up. That set everything off. One of the most exciting things was going there and being able to articulate what I wanted to achieve. Vin and I talk a lot, and it’s something that I appreciate. It’s a process that we thrive on because we both take a lot of pride in how we build our films.” Diesel, who has long served as one of the series’ guardians, concurs: “The most exciting part of it was that we were going to be able to treat this [film] not only as an action film, but with as much story as we do. It’s gratifying to be able to look back and to see how everything links up. “When you see Fast & Furious 6, you’ll want to go back and re-watch the previous films,” he adds. “When you can answer questions and shed light on scenes in previous movies, when you can promise something in the future… that’s cool filmmaking.
