TUE 11 JUN THE GRAMOPHONE BAND THE PORTLAND PUBLIC HOUSE
7PM
Every Tuesday evening in June, The Gramophone Band perform music of a bygone era at The Portland Public House. They play the sweet dulcet tones and the toe tapping hits of the 1920’s through to the 1950’s. The Gramophone Band brings a magical evening of vintage music that appeals to both the young and the old.
After developing a cult-like underground status, Brooklyn-based post punk indie rockers The National have risen well above the obscure depths they once lurked to behold one of 2013’s most anticipated album releases. After delivering The Boxer and High Violet to critical acclaim, they cemented themselves as the soundtrack of existential crises and as a band who does self-deprecating in a consistently flawless, ethereal fashion creating music that is anything but litanic. The National have a slow and steady, somewhat subtle approach to musical progression. To the passer by it would not be unfair to say that their work would blur into one unfortunately dreary amble through the valleys of depression. But for the fly-on-the-wall, of which there are many of, the moodiness of The National’s work is captivating, enchanting and probably unhealthy, their subtle evolution is masterfully controlled and vividly pronounced – like any good hipster will tell you, it just needs deconstructing. Sixth album Trouble Will Find Me lauded in high expectation is a beautifully atmospheric and dense continuation of The National’s catalogue. Their influences – Cat Stevens, Roy Orbison and David Bowie – seep through. This album, although still heavily moody, feels more buoyant and approachable then their past work. It’s like they discovered the studio had a light switch.
Don’t be fooled though. It’s an interesting example of understated intention, blowing about it threatens to melt into the distance on first listen but as you give it the wall-flower treatment all sorts of hooks, lyrical gems and audio abundance reveal themselves. Kicking off with lyrically languishing track ‘I Should Live In Salt’ is just as lugubrious as the rest – an articulate, imagery filled revelation that showcases vocalist Matt Berninger’s abilities well higher than his usual baritone drawl. The light wants to shine in. The album then bends off into lead track ‘Demons’, a traverse in soulful texture it emits comforting warmth. Pace picks up a notch in ‘Don’t Swallow The Cap’ as it secretes tension, rumbling percussion underpins a deep experiment in eighties keys/synth and artful guitar – subtlety is their strong point and ‘Nevermind’ and ‘Let It Be’ lurk in the chorus lines. ‘Fireproof’ is a tranquil respite before the deep shit comes out and tracks like ‘Heavenfaced’, ‘Graceless’ and ‘Pink Rabbits’ rollick off the depths of The National’s talent for literary, understated adult angst that is both beautiful and unpretentious. TWO & A HALF MEN – SEASON 10 TV2, 7.30PM
It’s been a year since internet billionaire Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher) tumbled into a Malibu beach house and bought the property where tightly-wound chiropractor Alan Harper and his slacker teenage son Jake resided. The surrogate family unit continues on the quest to make “better men” of each other.
When Fast & Furious 6 isn’t very fast and furious – ie when the film grinds to a halt from thudding exposition, groan-inducing comic relief and questionable emoting – you quickly begin to realise that what made Fast Five, the preceding franchise high point, stand out was the element of surprise from watching a series smartly re-tooled. Director Justin Lin had thrillingly navigated the focus away from illegal street racing to boldly preposterous heist escapades, plus the addition of Dwayne Johnson gave the cast a fresh dynamic to bounce off. Furious 6 is essentially more of the same, but as far as samey sequels go, it’s not bad, with the action pitched at hysterically overblown levels that now seem hard to reconcile with the universe established in the first film 12 years ago. Nothing here quite tops the Riodemolishing climax of Fast Five,
FRI 07 JUN FRESH MEAT
where that sequence trod the fine line between the possible and impossible, but Furious 6 is happy to tip the scale with two insane setpieces worth the price of admission alone. The first sees a tank flattening cars with brutal abandon on a busy freeway, which is then followed by an enormous military cargo aircraft being brought down on the world’s first never-ending runway. Stitching the action together is a nonsensical MacGuffin-driven plot featuring a forgettable rogue British Black Ops dude (Luke Evans) hell-bent on stealing a sought-after microchip. New cast members Gina Carano (Haywire) and Joe Taslim (The Raid) add a dose of martial arts to the mix, while returning old face Michelle Rodriguez has to carry the burden of an eye-rolling explanation for her existence. Their daughter’s and son’s on their way home when their middle class home in Churton Park is invaded by vicious prison-escapers on the run.
Seymour (Rick Moranis), an orphan and nerd who works in a run-down flower shop on Skid Row, spends his time doing menial tasks and dreaming of his coworker, Audrey (Ellen Greene). Then, one day, just after an eclipse of the sun, Seymour discovers a strange plant... it’s all downhill from there when it gets a taste for human flesh…

ROCK SALT CNR COBHAM RD & KERIKERI RD, KERIKERI
Rock Salt provides great food and drink in a comfortable space allowing you to relax and enjoy a business lunch, after work drink or dinner. The kitchen is open all day and serves a wide selection of homemade hot and cold food all prepared with, where possible, local ingredients.
RENKON MULTIPLE LOCATIONS
What’s not to love about Japanese food? It’s good for you with lots of veges, it’s full of flavour and it’s just the right amount of saucy to leave you without that greasy feeling of some takeaways. Renkon is perfect for lunch or dinner, with cheap as $11.50 mains.
SLIDERS KITCHEN & BAR
Sliders – the hot new trend in dining. Mini mini burgers designed to quash that craving while satisfying your hungry stomach. Set in a 100plus year old brick historic building, Sliders Kitchen and Bar gives a relaxing and casual place to meet friends. You can choose from either their specialty sliders/burgers menu, or opt for the tapas or full dinner menus. All the big games are live in the new bar, plus there’s themed nights! What more could you want? For example, Wednesday is Retro Champagne Night, where Champagne companies are helping teach you about their wine. Great music and food.

THE SMASH PALACE
Not to be confused with the not-so Fair Trade bananas of the same name, Bonita is a little bit of paradise outside of the concrete jungle. Specialising in all things wine and tapas, let the European sensibility wash over you as you relax after a hard day.
Smash Palace is the epitome of taking a less-than-ideal situation and making things better. Smash Palace is one of Christchurch’s ubiquitous “pop-up” bars and has been running out of a decommissioned bus for nearly a year now. They have two handpumps, with beers from the likes of Cassels, pulled through “from the bag”. They’ve done up their own little courtyard area, strung across festival lights and a canvas, and made the area into a boutique hang out. Genius. It’s a great place to hang out for a weekend casual or meet for a couple of quiets when you’re friends are in town. Show them the spirit of Canterbury.

OUT OF THE BLACKNESS BLACK SABBATH – OZZY OSBOURNE, TONY IOMMI AND GEEZER BUTLER – SPOKE RECENTLY IN AUCKLAND ABOUT THEIR UPCOMING ALBUM. Over the last few years, it has become quite nerve-racking to listen to a comeback album as many bands have attempted to incorporate modern sound and technique into their music with very varied rates of success. Black Sabbath fans, however, do not need to worry as 13 is a return to their doom metal roots. The three original members were joined on the album by Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine) on drums and legendary producer Rick Rubin. The album was recorded live, just like the earlier ones. Although it is slightly over-produced in parts, it still has a raw, thick and menacing core. Iommi explained, “It wasn’t quite like we did in the old days, it still went on to the computer, but everything else was fairly like we did it… we didn’t use a lot of tracks. It was very basic the whole thing.” Despite wanting to stay true to their old sound, Iommi did enjoy using his new Laney amps. He said, “When we got to the studio there must have been 15 different, old vintage amps that Rick’s engineer had gotten. I tried them but I didn’t like them! Because they’re called vintage it doesn’t mean to say they’re great you know, and they weren’t! So I didn’t use them and we sent them all back and I ended up using my Laneys.” The album opens slow and heavy with ‘End of the Beginning’. Any reservations about Osbourne’s voice immediately disappear, as his voice is crisp and clear. He said, “I kept the register of my vocals on this thing, so I could do them live on stage because in the past I did what they call drop-ins. I’d do a verse and then I’ll drop-in for the chorus and bring it all together and I found it like difficult to do it live on stage so I have purposely, consciously kept it at a range that is comfortable to do them live.” The song builds up before smashing into the first single ‘God is Dead’. This is probably the most commercial song on the album, but it is in no way mainstream. The lyrics are relevant, relatable and beautifully worded and there is no shortage of references to death and the devil.
Butler described his lyrical collaboration with Osbourne, “Like the old days Ozzy would come up with sort of the title and roughly what the choruses would be or whatever the subject matter would be and then I would just fill in the rest. And four of the songs Ozzy did all on his own.” Butler then laughed as he adds, “The first thing that I said was, ‘I’m not doing the lyrics.’ And Rick says ‘Oh yes you are!’” Although Bill Ward had originally intended to play drums on the album, Rubin made the decision to use Wilk instead. Iommi said, “It just felt natural to us… a lot of drummers can either go with the bass or go with the guitar and we always go with a drummer that can work with the bass player and a guitarist at the same time, and Brad could do that.” He then continued to say that Wilk was able to channel the same jazz influences that Ward used. “Brad had that same kind of swing. He wasn’t just a typical heavy metal drummer.” The midway point of the album reveals this softer and jazzier side of Sabbath. ‘Zeitgeist’ is brooding and melodic, showcasing innovation and versatility. Doom lurks around the corner as the album winds down in classic Black Sabbath style. The guitars become deeper and epic while Osbourne’s haunting vocals lure you in. Osbourne commented, “It has rounded it off really nice for me because when we broke up in 1978 I always felt like it was unfinished business… this album is really great you know.” He is right – as the customary gloomy church bells close the album, we can be sure the Black Sabbath comeback will be a success. In the Moscow Metro, 20 years after an apocalyptic nuclear war, the struggle for survival continues. The surface is a deadly wasteland. If the radiation doesn’t kill you, the mutants will. Beneath the ground, it’s not much better. Survivors are split into factions, constantly battling for territory, supplies, and weapons. It’s grim. But, it is also the perfect setting for a post-apocalyptic first person shooter. And, after the success of 2010’s Metro 2033, Ukrainian developers 4A Games are ready to take us back to the world of even neo-er Neo-Nazis, gas masks, deadly air rifles, and the mysterious Dark Ones. If it all sounds hopelessly depressing, it is. And Metro: Last Light brings it to life brilliantly. From the misty, grey, crumbling, surface, to the underground communities full of desperate people determined to carry on. Once the game gets going you’ll be feeling the cold, fighting a sense of dread and treating rifle rounds and gas mask filters like gold. Within the world of Metro, the game plays like your average shooter. It’s all pretty standard FPS stuff, just with an added touch of dour realism. There are no snappy one-liners when you take out a guard. No “yee-ha” bravado, or man sized minigun, when you stumble on a room full of enemy soldiers. In Last Light after you kill a guard your celebration is usually crouching in a dark corner, checking you gun’s pressure and ammo, before sneaking out through an open vent. That’s not to say you don’t have a choice in how to play. You can shoot everyone and everything if you want, or you can play sneakily, creeping around, turning off lights, and knocking people out.

There’s no health meter magically in front of your face. No armour bonus for killing 10 enemies in a row. If you fall down in a swamp, you have to wipe the mud away so you can see. And, if you run out of ammo shooting mutants, their bodies don’t magically carry 20 fresh shotgun shells to keep you going. Metro: Last Light is a hugely enjoyable game. It is very European – there is sex, violence, politics, and some pretty weird mysticism. What it does best of all is establish and maintain a tone. It is sad. It is hopeless. It is grim. Wonderfully, thought provokingly, and very enjoyably grim. WRITTEN BY DENE BENHAM

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Celine Rita is a boutique fashion label based in Auckland (136B Newton Road) and online at celinerita.com. Unashamedly feminine with the perfect fit always at the heart of our designs. Whether it’s a twist on the classic party dress or chic separates for day or night wear, we take the time to make sure every item feels and looks wonderful on. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Historical fashion had always struck a deep chord with me and often influences my designs, so I’m struggling to name just one! But right now, I’m loving Lady Di’s style. She’s a muse for our SS ’13 collection. What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? I have major girl crushes on - Audrey Tautou, Alexa Chung, Clemence Poesy. They all have a very clear personal style that is effortlessly cool, whether they are in girlish dresses or cropped skinnies and flats. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? There is nothing worse than following the latest trends too closely, especially when it doesn’t flatter your shape. Runners up in this category would have to be wearing too much black and playing it safe. What’s the must-have look this spring? Combining different textures in the same colour palette.

A ROARING GOOD TIME BAZ LUHRMANN’S EPIC THE GREAT GATSBY PUTS THE EXCESS IN THE EXCESSIVE 1920S. Who is this Gatsby? It’s the question on everyone’s lips as they arrive at his lavish mansion. The Champagne flows excessively, diamonds light up the night into the wee hours of the morning and the vibrant party scene is nothing but a blur as partygoers drink and dance themselves stupid.
Hmmm, I don’t know – complex, romantic, dark, glamorous, great actor…”
Much like the character of the same name, Baz Luhrmann’s highly-anticipated, opulent reimagining of F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, is the very epitome of excess, of indulgence and living the dream.
“Gatsby is an incredible character to play,” acknowledges DiCaprio. “I think he’s very much the manifestation of the American dream, of imagining who you can become… and he does it all for the love of a woman. But even that is open to interpretation: Is Daisy just the manifestation of his dreams? Or is he really in love with this woman? I think that he’s a hopeless romantic but he’s also an incredibly empty individual searching for something to fill a void in his life.”
With $13 million at his fingertips and an all-star cast of Hollywood heavyweights – not to mention creative input from Prada and Tiffany & Co when it comes to the costuming – the director has brought to life the Roaring Twenties from the modest pages of Fitzgerald’s original work. The story follows would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man of many secrets. The spending and luxury of the rich and young was something Luhrmann recognised as a relevant theme now more than ever, and made a conscious effort to both capture the zeitgeist of the era, but also give it a modern edge. “Fitzgerald, I think, sensed a fundamental crack in the moral fabric of the 1920s, that things could not keep going up, up, up, as they were, couldn’t last,” says Luhrmann, “and that felt very relevant to the global financial crash of 2008. It felt parallel. If I think about it now, this fact is what told me I had to do Gatsby now and in this way. We came to New York because we had to be in New York to learn about and understand for ourselves those parallels of place, culture and mindset – Jazz Age and today.” Luhrmann knew that, ultimately, the project would be pinned on the title character. He needed to find an actor who could express Gatsby’s core complexity, smile “one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it”, and then, in a flash, look “as if he had killed a man”. “I’d been secretly working on it for some time, knowing all along who I’d like to play Jay Gatsby. Really, it wasn’t difficult to think of someone!

DiCaprio, with whom Luhrmann had worked on William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet when he was just 22 years old, was the obvious choice.
Award-winning actress Carey Mulligan, who stars as Daisy, offers, “The main thing about Daisy is her duality. She wants to be protected and safe and live in a certain way. But, at the same time, she wants epic romance. She’s just swayed by whatever is the strongest and most appealing thing. She’s not a grounded person or a genuine person, in a way.” “Leonardo was a constant partner in this search [for an actress to play Daisy],” says Luhrmann. “Leo said the most brilliant thing: ‘You know, I’ve been thinking about it… Gatsby has had a lot of very beautiful women thrown at him. Carey’s very beautiful, but she’s also very unusual. Daisy needs to be sort of precious and unique and something that Gatsby wants to protect. Something that he’s never experienced before.’ We looked at each other and said, ‘It’s her.’” Like his other works, Luhrmann says Gatsby is an entertaining and also modern story, and is hoping his audience will be as captivated by this tale as he was. “It has this fantastic romance, the world of the bootlegger, it has flash, it has cash, but it also has violence and death and tragedy. Most importantly, underneath all of this it has complex, rich characters and deep emotion, passion and love.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER THE GREAT GATSBY OUT THU 06 JUN
