Kings of Leon have confirmed the release of their sixth studio album Mechanical Bull this September. The band has revealed that the follow-up to 2010’s Come Around Sundown was recorded with longtime producer Angelo Petraglia in their studio in Nashville. Before the album is released, the band will headline this summer’s V festival. They will also play shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham in June and July, staring at London’s O2 Arena. Debbie Harry and her band Blondie have chosen to record a song written by Christchurch musician Matt Barus (of Dukes fame) for their next album. “Dukes supported Blondie and the Pretenders on their 2010 New Zealand tour,” Barus explains. “I pretty much pulled out Parallel Lines and tried to come up with a few songs that might fit that feel. My wife Lauren [LA Mitchell] came up with a killer bridge and off went two songs.” Barus isn’t sure why that particular song appealed to Harry and jokes that he likes to think he nailed what it’s like to be in the head of a 60-plus new wave icon.

Nine Inch Nails has announced they will release their new full-length album Hesitation Marks on Mon 02 Sep on Polydor Records. The new studio album, which Trent Reznor recorded with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder over the course of the past year, marks the first new music from Nine Inch Nails in five years and is their first release on Polydor Records. Lead single ‘Came Back Haunted’ appeared online last week to much excitement from fans. “I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately,” said Trent Reznor. “For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great. This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again. My forays into film, HTDA and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go!”

Late last month Xbox, owned by software giant Microsoft held it’s unveiling of the Xbox One with the slogan ‘All Your Entertainment, All In One’. With the aim to harmonize your games, live TV and films.
You can interact with the Xbox One using voice and hand gestures, so no more remote controls needed with a Kinect motion and sound sensing device that can even sense your heart rate. Some gamers are said to be disappointed about the focus on multimedia capabilities at the conference. The main cause for controversy is said to be the lack of compatibility with Xbox 360 games (which is not surprising). It is also said the Xbox One’s dependence on a daily internet connection to keep games functional, even if playing offline, may be a pain for some gamers. There will be no rentals and cloud storage of games means no more trading or selling games with friends and gaming retailers. Your house is on fire, what do save? My dog and some beers so I can have a beer while I watch it burn. Favourite ‘90s TV show? The Simpsons. Dream job as a kid? I always wanted to be a policeman and now here we are all these years later and I’ve met so many of them. If you weren’t a comedian, what would you be? Alone. Very, very alone drinking wine from a brown paper bag. Ultimate festival line-up? I would like to see a comedy festival that mimics Woodstock – 2-3 days of the world’s best comedians outdoors with 40,000 people sitting in a field. It wouldn’t work but some of the heckles would be awesome.
Playstation 4 was unveiled in February by Sony with the tagline ‘Play’. There is no doubt that the focus is on gaming and the handset DUALSHOCK®4 with new features including inbuilt motion sensors, touch pad and share button. Playstation will be revealing more at the E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles this week. At the event Microsoft and Sony will be battling for attention for their next generation consoles. In these changing times the rights of ‘ownership’ is becoming blurred. Gone of the days when you can buy a game or CD and do with it what you like. In a world with

It’s hard to believe it’s been over twenty years since Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool and Alice In Chains rose to fame on the crest of a relentless hard-rock/grunge shockwave that would finally sound the death bell for 80’s hair metal and reshape the rock ‘n’ roll landscape for years to come. It’s even harder to believe that after countless hiatuses, break-ups, reunions, questionable side-projects and unlikely supergroups the original bands are all back in action, flaunting their seasoned wares to the iTunes generation. Two things have always set Alice In Chains apart from the rest of their grunge-era cohorts - the distinctive and uncompromisingly sludgy heavy metal riffing of guitarist Jerry Cantrell and the unmistakable drawl of troubled frontman Layne Staley. On this, the band’s fifth studio fulllength and second with Comes With The Fall vocalist William Duvall (following Staley’s untimely demise in 2002), the band attempts to recreate the magic that allowed their early work, as well as their most recent album (the Grammy-nominated Black Gives Way To Blue), to blur the boundaries between metal and grunge, creating a formidable sound, equally ferocious and melodic. The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here features copious amounts of dizzyingly heavy grooves, stomping drums and an abundance of jarringly abrasive hooks. The unrelenting chant of the trademark Alice harmonies ooze
with a calculated menace - the sonic equivalent of an ominous warning snarled by a sinister figure from the shadows of a malevolent underworld. Credit is due to DuVall who now comfortably fills Staley’s shoes – with a vocal style and tone similar enough to the late frontman’s to be unmistakably Alice, without drifting into dodgy cover version territory. Standout tracks include opener ‘Hollow’, an expansive juggernaut with an infectious anti-refrain which is reminiscent of 1992’s ‘Would?’ as well as the growling ‘Voices’, a spattered anthem which sees DuVall channel Staley and Scott Weiland in a barbed, desperate plea for help. The band’s 1992 single ‘Rooster’ dealt with themes of war, death and loss, and in the twenty years since, the band has personally experienced more than their fair share of these. Now seasoned veterans themselves (as well as the eponymous dinosaurs of the album title), they have produced another solid album - unapologetically heavy yet undeniably melodic - that is likely to keep old fans happy and may attract a few new ones. Like an ever-so-slightly more literary Transformers sequel, Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby is a senseshattering storm of lush imagery, beautiful people and other aesthetic wonders. It’s the modern blockbuster as classic book adaptation. I had a ball watching it, but the impact is fleeting and the emotions shallow. Like Transformers. By replacing giant robots and explosions with luxurious mansions, dazzling costumes and immaculate make-up, The Great Gatsby invites an air of superficial respectability that is perhaps reflected in its lead character – a distortion of the American Dream who built up his fortune with illgotten gains. DiCaprio is well-suited (literally!) to the part – he’s finally starting to leave behind the boyishness that has always threatened his believability as a grown-up. As Jay Gatsby, he
cuts a fine figure, but the deeply felt obsession at the heart of his character doesn’t totally shine through. Tobey Maguire acquits himself with dignity as the audience’s somewhat blank proxy and Carey Mulligan oozes sensuality, almost to the point where I was willing to forgive her character’s transgressions. The most impressive performance in the film is given by Aussie Joel Edgerton, wholly convincing as a rich entitled jerk. But it’s the filmmaking that is the true star here, and while it never stops calling attention to itself, it’s still a wonder to behold – I haven’t felt this drunk on cinematic beauty since Life of Pi. Colourful shelves of spirits and liquor lined across the arched windows beckon people into The Monday Room Restaurant and Bar, Christchurch’s newest place to kick back. Designed to be a hideaway into which to escape, a grand entrance is followed by rich, textured patterns and the juxtaposition of old with new creates an interesting, inviting atmosphere. The highly detailed museum-like illustrations under large bell glasses are reminiscent of Victorian times – except the images are ever-changing on iPads. A delicious menu and a great range of drinks including cocktails – the dark cosy bar area gives way to a more modern, covered outdoor seating/ smoking area with a log fire.

KILLING JOKE HAVE FINALLY FOUND THEIR KIWI AUDIENCE AND LOOK FORWARD TO COMING “HOME”.
Despite having been a resident of this country, Jaz Coleman’s seminal neu-punk-goth outfit Killing Joke have never before played in Aotearoa. Now – on the back of a worldwide singles best of tour – the original, essential line-up of Coleman, Youth, Geordie and Paul Ferguson finally put their feet down on a local stage or two. It seems extraordinary that it has taken this long for Killing Joke to play here, particularly since the ever-mercurial Coleman has lived here on and off since the mid-1980s. “Well, no-one’s asked us to,” says Coleman of their absence. “Let’s be perfectly honest about this. If there’s no demand… but 25 years on finally there is. I can play in my own country. I’m looking forward to it.” That said, Killing Joke are world citizens. Coleman in particular, who despite having land on an island in the Hauraki Gulf “sleeps from couch to couch, of no fixed abode”. “I like to move around. Stay with different people. I don’t want to amass of possessions and all the trappings that go with those. When on tour Youth collects hundreds of albums and ships them all back to the UK. I have three pairs of pants, and my stage clothes. That’s it!” Most recently, he was hanging with a local broadcaster in the apartment right next to the Groove Guide offices. However, despite the close proximity, I have to call halfway across the world. On the line from Seattle, he’s not in the best of voices. “My voice went completely at one point, but it came back miraculously,” he explains. “We had two shows to do in one day. I just mashed it with medication. You know, I’ve never missed a show in 35 years. I get by on the love and support of the audience!” Killing Joke is only one of Coleman’s many projects, who also composed classical music. The alt-heroes of the ‘80s have a particular brand of spiky post-punk producing hits such as ‘Love Like Blood’, ‘Kings and Queens’ and ‘Eighties’ – plus a notoriously unnerving and in-yer-face live show. They’ve been the encouraging force behind acts such as Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Faith No More, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein. Killing Joke were on a hiatus until 2003, when they began producing some

of the most vital music of their career reminding everyone what was so special about them in the first place. But it was their most recent album, MMXII, which re-landed their “typically political and agitating” sound – it’s a “loud, grinding and relentless” take on industrial metal. “Actually, it’s incredibly cathartic. Like a primal scream – so different from the orchestral work. Killing Joke concerts are where everyone just meets up, like a forum. In Toronto, my voice had just gone, but they cheered me on. And that touches me deeply. The love for our band never ceases to amaze me. We’ve been going 35 years. Most bands get nasty (over money and creative power) by then. But we split the money equally (to avoid that). So 35 years later my band mates are my best friends.” Their 2013 tour promises to be something of a “Singles Hits” endeavor – ironic considering it’s from a band whose last priority is bothering the charts. “I’m always the last person to know this because I don’t use modern forms of communication unless it’s a land line,” Coleman says. “I don’t use computers... I knew a singles collection was coming out when I came on the tour. For me, Killing Joke was never a singles band. We’re forced into a ‘singles’ market because they started by just taking one song off the album – we’ve never been radio friendly.” Currently, Killing Joke has been terrorising crowds in the US, so I asked him what he thought of the States these days – and it’s not pretty. “It’s different from 30 years ago. There’s no rebellion left. Everyone is just a passive zombie. The sad thing is there is much less of a community than when we started. Part of that might be modern forms of communication. Walk down the street, everyone’s on his or her iPhones, or in their own virtual world. It’s a fragmented society. People have access now to amazing amounts of information, but their attention spans are getting shorter, their focus is gone. Instant gratification. Instant knowledge orgasm! To say that this game is eagerly anticipated would be the understatement of the year. After three beautifully crafted Uncharted games, all eyes have been on developers Naughty Dog to see if they could replicate their earlier success with a new franchise. The Last of Us, which releases on the 14th June, is a bold affirmation that they can. The Last of Us, for the few who haven’t heard, is a third-person survival-action game that takes place in the very near future. Humanity is on the brink of extinction due to a parasitic fungus that has wiped out millions. A heavy, gritty struggle for survival, the game tasks players with taking Joel and Ellie on a trek across the USA, attempting as they do to avoid the death that awaits around every corner. Danger will come not only in the form of the infected, but also in fellow survivors who are so desperate they’ll do anything for food or supplies (including cold-blooded murder.) As fans of Uncharted will expect, the game is full of plot intricacies, deep character development, and there are even a few surprises thrown in. The Last of Us is a tour de force that changes pace alarmingly - a roller-coaster ride that has to be experienced first hand to be fully appreciated. The third-person controls are slick and the character animations incredibly fluid. Joel’s movements in particular are nearly faultless, whether he’s engaged in intense violent combat or simply climbing a wall or picking up ammunition.
Call of Duty. No three words stir as many emotions in any modern gamer. Good? Bad? Individual preference, of course, will vary. One thing you probably aren’t, though, is indifferent. Activision’s flagship shooter franchise isn’t just big; it’s the biggest – and not just in gaming. Black Ops II, the latest in the series, made more than $600 million in the first 24 hours it was on sale, making it the biggest entertainment launch (not just game) of 2012. It will have surprised precisely zero observers, then, that there’s going to be another one. What may have raised an eyebrow or two, however, is that Activision aren’t taking the obvious route – the sequel that hits shelves (and, soon after, millions of homes) in November isn’t going to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Instead, Infinity Ward – the company that invented the franchise – have created an all story with all new characters and no link whatsoever to the games that came before it. Called Call of Duty: Ghosts, the game is set in the near future. This future is a grim place; precisely why has yet to be detailed, but something… catastrophic… has occurred, and the US (yeah, it’s one of those narratives) has been almost wiped off the map. By what, who knows; what I can tell you, as a result of my behind-thescenes time with the game in LA, is that this is no Homefront-style invasion that simply caught the States off guard.
It’s the ‘dynamicness’ of Ellie that makes The Last of Us stand apart from most other games, though. She’s not just a sidekick or an inconvenient escort; despite her youthful age, Ellie is more than capable of holding her own.
The land itself appears to have been smashed and broken, by what the developers describe as a “mass event,” leaving the military devastated, the government in disarray, and the country crippled. One of few survivors, the idea is that you – a top-tier soldier type – link up with members of other Special Forces units to form an elite fighting unit (the titular ghosts).
The Last of Us is a memorable gaming experience. One that makes me wonder how the PS3 console could be nearing the end of its life-cycle. The comparisons to Uncharted can’t be ignored and, while it might appear a ‘safe move’ by Naughty Dog on the surface, their new franchise undoubtedly pushes the boundaries in a welcome new direction.
One of the sequences we were shown (which was set under water) suggested, by way of a submerged and destroyed lighthouse, that something far more significant than a simple attack has taken place. Exactly what happens is far from clear at this point, but it certainly seems more interesting that some sort of black op in some dank jungle some place.
It’s harrowing, emotionally driven, action-packed and impossible to put down once you start.
It’s a bold move for the 10th game in a series to make, and I for one can’t wait to get my hands on the final product.

THE BLACK ANGELS DEATH SONG Texas psychedelic rockers The Black Angels have built their reputation on a relentless touring schedule and a mesmerising live show that borders on the spiritual. With raving reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, Drowned in Sound and the New York Times, it is easy to understand the critical acclaim when the band approaches their live persona with such intimate detail. “When you go see a band,” says lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Maas, “I feel [it’s] a time [when] you can kinda connect with the audience on a very personal level, a very one-on-one kind of thing. It’s almost like a musical church.” Speaking over the phone with Alex, he likens their live show to watching an artist paint a painting. “You can feel the different textures, the coloured paint brush on the palette and the mixture of the paint, and you see everything kinda come alive... the final product is watching the whole thing happen.” Their fourth studio release, Indigo Meadow, was released in early April and follows their penchant for channeling early psychedelic music through a modern lens. The lighter, playful tone builds upon the hypnotic, dark grooves of their back catalogue and acts a slight stylistic change for the band. Between the haunting vocals, keyboard drones, seductive groove and fuzzy guitars, it all makes for a very entrancing affair, and is credited to Alex’s perception of music as a form of artistic escapism, deriving from what he considers as the therapeutic essence of music. “There’s something about... play[ing] the music; you get the chills and you feel like you’re onto something magical or whatever you wanna call it. You end up pointing towards an idea that you’re leaving yourself.” For their fourth outing The Black Angels chose John Congleton as producer, who has worked with a diverse range of musicians, from The Roots to Explosions in the Sky, and Marilyn Manson to R. Kelly. Quite an iconic list, yes, but it was his communication talents which really sealed the deal. “We feel comfortable around him, you know. He’s worked with some of our favourite bands - Pink Mountaintops, Clinic, [and] I like The Roots a lot too. He’s a good communicator, really good at getting our ideas out of us, [and] that’s one of the best parts about it.” 30

Indigo Meadow was recorded against the backdrop of the El Paso desert over a month. The vast, eerie nature of the desert proved the ideal setting to re-coop after a demanding two years of non-stop touring and the departure of bassist Nate Ryan. His departure, Maas assures me, didn’t affect the song writing; “it was still very much a collective effort”. The Austin Psych Fest – a yearly psychedelic festival hosted partly by the band, further cements their role as psychedelic advocators. Now into its sixth year, the festival has grown from a small event to an internationally acclaimed weekend. When asked about the success of the festival, Maas is stunned. “It’s kind of amazing that we’re able to put these bands on our bill... you know, we’re inspired by these guys, like The Warlocks, Clinic and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. It’s a super cool thing to happen that is very inspiring,” says the frontman. Psychedelic music obviously holds a special place in Alex’s heart, and when queried about the future of the genre, he’s a little unsure but remains confident that it will carry on strong, and wishes many of the dedicated bands to “infiltrate the mainstream”. We can only hope. “The growth of the music festival [is] growing very well in unison with the growth of the genre. It’s hard to say what’s going to happen tomorrow, but I don’t think a lot of these bands are going anywhere for a while.” The upcoming New Zealand tour will precede their appearance at Glastonbury festival in the U.K., and will be their first visit to our shores, something that is on each member’s bucket list, Alex tells me. He’s particularly excited about our lush greenery. “I’m just so excited to go there (NZ). I’ve always been surrounded by nature and I’m really looking forward to that experience.
