ALBUM OF THE WEEK

SAT 29 JUN THE NUDGE SAMMY’S

KANYE WEST YEEZUS

9PM, $10-15, COSMICTICKETING.CO.NZ

The Nudge has been forming their genre crossing sound for the past few years now. Formed initially from Ryan Prebble wishing to expand what was originally a solo project, the elements of blues were naturally there. However, with the addition of Coyle and Whakamoe, The Nudge has come to find their sound far more psychedelic and hypnotic.

ARLI LIBERMAN THIRSTY DOG

8PM, $10, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ

In celebration of the release of Arli Liberman’s debut single ‘Dizengoff’, the feted Israeli rock guitarist and composer is giving an electrifying performance. Liberman discovered the luscious possibilities of melody and harmony through childhood experimentation with synth sounds and eventually began to use the guitar as a way to channel the rich, endless notes flowing through him.

THE ADULTS THE POWERSTATION

8PM, $35, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

The Adults are hitting the road again this winter, with a brand new lineup featuring axe-legend Aaron Tokona of Cairo Knife Fight. Tokona steps into Shayne Carter’s guitarist role and will bring a new dimension to their sound. The tour represents one of the last opportunities to catch the band playing the self-titled debut before they head into the studio.

SECRET KNIVES & GLASS VAULTS PUPPIES

8PM, $9, UNDERTHERADAR.CO.NZ

After a handful of adored live performances in China late in 2012 and an arresting performance at Camp A Low Hum in February, Secret Knives are for the first time since they first came to attention with the release of The Wolves in 2008, touring New Zealand. Joining Secret Knives on this jaunt are friends and collaborators Glass Vaults.

ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK VECTOR ARENA

7PM, $99-249, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Kiwi fans will be able to dance to ‘Ten Guitars’, when British pop legend Engelbert Humperdinck returns to New Zealand for one concert at Vector Arena. He sold out The Civic when he was last here in 2006 and this show will be another greatest hits performance, so fans can expect ‘Ten Guitars’ will be on the setlist.

Is it a product of out of control ego or is it genius? Is it a 40-minute masterpiece or could it just be a soul-less statement of relentless nihilism? There’s a lot to think about when it comes to Yeezus, not least if it’s as good as many seem to think. But then again, why can’t it be all of the above yet just slightly less of each? North West’s proud daddy puts a lot into his 6th studio album - from a truckload of artist/producer credits to the anger of a well-to-do man whose public persona is so toxic to many. That fury often drives Yeezus, but it’s hard to tell if he’s genuine here, like so much of what the crown prince of controversial outbursts does. Mostly recorded in Paris, the man who loves Taylor Swift’s work (but not as much as Beyoncé’s) shackedup in his Parisian loft to work on the album with a number of international collaborators. Kid Cudi, RZA and a bunch of other, multi-genre bigwigs were part of the fun, culminating in a 10-track, dark and somewhat minimalistic affair.

Sight,’ a wake-up-and-listen track that effectively scrags the listener and pulls them into West’s world. It’s followed by the rollicking, ‘Black Skinhead,’ a short but crucial statement of intent for Kanye’s ego. Shit gets unreal on ‘I Am A God,’ which is baffling, catchy, furious, and fuck-witted. Just take these lyrics: “I am a God, so hurry up with my damn massage. In a Frenchass restaurant... Hurry up with my damn croissants!” There’s a continuous stream of this throughout Yeezus, all set over a battlefield of smashed-up beats and samples. It’s grinding, often wildly misogynistic, and sometimes playful, but never fully without an agenda. If you can get past this, then there’s undoubtedly a very good album sitting in your hands. If not, then you’ll just have to yearn for the good ol’ days before Kanye became Kimye. WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN

It’s no surprise that DJ-duo, Daft Punk, produced several tracks as Yeezus often comes off as a brooding flip-side to the French-men’s latest, Random Access Memories. Their presence adds to the strong French/American connection, with Kanye’s city of birth, Chicago, and his 2012 location of France informing many elements on the album. Case in point is the recurring theme of Chicago acid house meeting sparse, French techno at key moments.

ARTIST Q&A

FRI 28 JUN MATARIKI DAWN

ARLI LIBERMAN MUSICIAN

STARDOME

First album? Judas Priest – Painkiller. I was 13 and didn’t know who they were at time, but when I chucked the headphones on… oh, boy that was a serious painkiller for a crazy 13-year-old boy!

WED 26 JUN - SUN 30 JUN

Celebrate Matariki by exploring the star cluster and its cultural traditions and significance. At this special time of year, the dome uses the immersive digital planetarium to project a beautiful virtual starfield high on the domed ceiling above while you recline in the seats below. Be transported by the sights and sounds of Matariki in a unique environment, whatever the weather.

ODYSSEY TAPAC

WED 26 JUN - SUN 30 JUN

Following a critically acclaimed inaugural season, that left audiences beaming, Odyssey, directed by Laurel Devenie and Katy Maudlin, is a theatrical explosion of people, surprise, joy and adventure of epic proportion. There will be shipwrecks, sirens, battles and bicycles, one-eyed monsters and angry gods, singing, feasting, praying and finding your way home.

BIRTH/DEATH MAIDMENT THEATRE $18-25 WED 26 JUN - SUN 30 JUN

A midwife and her high-spirited daughter test a potential new apprentice’s skills, in a somewhat unorthodox fashion. A small village’s repressed fear and anger explodes into a witch hunt that will claim the lives of many women.

SAT 29 JUN

Your house is on fire, what do save? Interesting question. When I was six, my house actually caught on fire… (It was an accident. Never play with matches inside especially when you freakin’ six years old)… the first thing I saved my golden retriever. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Back then my English was pretty crappy and being dyslectic didn’t help with reading the subtitles, but I still love watching The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Dream job as a kid? Dairy farmer or a pilot. Worst job you’ve had? Dairy farmer… I got rammed by an angry cow and fractured my collar bone.

Ultimate festival line-up? Starting with Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix together, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles grooving with sunglasses, Metallica, James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince smashing it, Paul Simon with Arli Liberman on shaker (I had to put myself somewhere just so I can hang out with all those people after – that would be like the dream party). The King Crimson playing the album Red, Pink Floyd doing Wish You Were, The Beatles and the grand finale would be Led Zeppelin finishing with ‘Kashmir’. How do you discover new music? Unfortunately, these days, mainly through social networks. Which song do you wish you wrote? ‘Stairway to Heaven’. First gig in attendance? It was in Israel around 1997 and it was a big outdoor concert by an Israeli rock band called Mofa Ha’arnavot Shel Dr Kasper (yeah, try to pronounce this name, this is pretty much how they sounded too). WORLD WAR Z

MOONRISE KINGDOM SKY MOVIES, 8.30PM

Director Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle.

directed by Marc Forster Starring BRAD PITT, MIREILLE ENOS, DANIELLA KERTESZ

THE TOWN THAT CAUGHT TOURETTE’S TV3, 9.30PM

This documentary tells the story of a group of teenage girls in a small US town that suddenly developed what appeared to be Tourette’s syndrome. Within a few months, 18 students were sick and the diagnosis became “mass hysteria”. As a cry for help, the girls went on national TV and their story caused a global media frenzy.

THU 27 JUN THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES GENERAL RELEASE

Ryan Gosling as you have never seen him before – unless you have seen Drive or Blue Valentine. Shedding his Notebook pretty boy image, the Gos is a motorcycle stunt rider turned bank robber, working hard to make a dollar for his lady after he discovers an old flame has a child by him. Awkward.

Amongst all the chatter that the zombie concept is played out, consider that the closest these horror staples have come to a blockbuster depiction is the Resident Evil series – something that leaves ample scope for improvement. As the title suggests, World War Z follows the cascading plague of undead around the globe via a series of clashes, stalemates and counter-attacks, and from its broadest, most removed perspective the film offers an enticing blend of action, disaster, pandemic and horror. Most blockbusters’ strengths lie in their set pieces rather than the often-fragile narrative that connects them together, and this is true here, the challenge in fashioning a wholly viable experience from World War Z made all the more difficult by the fragmented first person accounts that form its source material. Unfortunately, the solution

isn’t to insert Brad Pitt into all of these scenarios, the result being an increasingly implausible one man journey around the planet as he gets into, and out of, all manner of zombie scrapes in search of the outbreak’s origins. Those scrapes are pretty damn fun to watch though - particularly the escalating chaos of the fall of Philadelphia and a tense Pitt-stop in Korea - and for a gore-free film, there are plenty of scares to accompany the film’s unique massively depicted scale. Sadly World War Z can’t quite overcome its narrative challenges, well-documented production dramas or the distracting unreality of its undead. A rushed ending and unnecessary family subplot don’t help either, making for a mixed bag that isn’t the disaster some predicted, but is unlikely to kickstart a hoped-for franchise. DEXTER - SEASON 8

GENERAL RELEASE

SOHO, 8.30PM

Audrey Tautou stars in this French period drama as an unhappily married woman, who tied the knot for convenience not love. She’s struggling to break free from suffocating social pressures and her boring provincial setting, and when her passionate younger sister arrives, it stirs things up. Directed by the late Claude Miller, based on the 1927 literary classic .

Last season launched with the realisation by Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) that her brother Dexter (Michael C Hall) had not killed just one person, but was the Bay Harbour Butcher, Miami’s notorious serial killer. We saw Dexter gradually replacing “the code”, which stipulates never killing an innocent, with doing whatever it takes him to survive and evade arrest.

CHAPEL 147 PONSONBY RD

Everyone’s favourite Ponsonby hangout is newlyrefurbished and ready for a mid-winter celebration! They’ve got an all new menu with some delicious additions – you know, to complement the fine beverages of choice – and some great DJs spinning the music you want to hear.

GOOD LUCK BAR BASEMENT 126 CUBA ST

Their cocktail menu is based on old Chinese Almanac, the I Ching. The I Ching is very complex, but in layman’s terms these drinks represent a different point of the yin-yang and are in state of constant change. Each cocktail is inspired by a hexagram.

LA ZEPPA

Situated above the Victoria Park Markets, with a view of the beautiful grounds and the twinkling city lights, La Zeppa has the feel of a New York industrial warehouse which has been lovingly transformed into a spacious bar set with wrought iron candelabras, dim lighting on soft brick and a large open fireplace. The music is mastered by local DJs at the weekends; they ensure it is played for their customers each evening, not themselves. This hip bar focuses on the fact that people want to enjoy each other’s company with a great glass of wine and tasty plates.

UNWRAP TCHAIKOVSKY Thu 26 Jun Town Hall, Auckland

PUTTING THE SUPER IN SUPERHERO MAN OF STEEL SHEDS ITS CAMP IMAGE AND SHOWS A STRENGTH OF CHARACTER.

Step aside Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh and spandex underwear – there’s a new hero in town. Downplaying the comic side of the comic book, there’s a reason why he’s called ‘Man of Steel’. With director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch) at the helm – but producer Christopher Nolan clearly whispering in the captain’s ear – the Hollywood heavyweights have steered the superhero in a new direction. Bringing Nolan’s signature darkness and Snyder’s visual technique and finesse, Man of Steel is truly indestructible as a blockbuster of epic proportions. Sent from his homeworld with the hope of a bright future, Kal-El/Clark Kent (played by Henry Cavill) has always been different. Through school he was an outcast, throughout his adult life he shied away from crowds. But when an old evil returns to threaten his new home – earth – Clark must reveal his secret identity and risk being outcast once again. Called “joyless” in advanced reviews, you can see why if you were expecting an Avengers-style, one-liner laden script, heavy on explosions and light on substance – and it’s not surprising with David S Goyer behind the words (The Dark Knight trilogy). This steely flick has heart and soul. It’s not without the odd witty remark or off-hand sarcastic comment, but overall it’s a serious drama that if you removed the caped hero could be any other Oscar contender. The theme of fatherhood, of being a protector and what it means to fight for what you believe in is a heavy issue that is echoed throughout – as Jor-El (Russell Crowe) risks his life for his son’s safety, so too does Clark’s human father, Jonathan (Kevin Costner), and in return Superman risks his life for all humanity. Doing what Snyder does best, this movie is a visual treat. We’re with our hero every step of the way – navigating buildings, crashing through skyscrapers, bounding across Antarctic. It’s amazing how far we have come from a wire-hung actor and rear projection. Although there is an abundance of Steadicam in parts to give you that classic sense of “being in the action” (not to mention a few JJ Abrams lens flares), the sheer scale of the fight scenes can vary from being magnificently worldwide to capturing every punch and kick in hand-to-hand combat. So what about Superman? Well, any man who can reduce his body fat to three percent in six weeks and transform into a British Hulk is going to win my vote (he is delicious), but it’s more than that. Stepping in where others have failed, Henry Cavill (Immortals, The Tudors) plays up the fragility and humanity of Superman far more than it has been touched upon

before. After all, this is his origin story – growing up a confused boy into an adult, he (literally) goes on a journey of self-discovery to find out where he came from. The transformation of the character is beyond just physical, proving there’s more to him than the cape, which Cavill uncovers perfectly. Speaking of the suit – it’s a big call, but there is no more red underwear and bright blue. Stripped back, looking more spacesuit than superhero, it’s a sign that echoes the film’s sentiments. Other two big bonuses are (dare I say it) Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon. Ditching the bald-headed businessman Lex Luthor, General Zod is a terrifying antagonist. Equipped with the capabilities of Superman, he’s his match, striving for everything Superman wants to defend. Shannon (The Runaways) is dramatic, fearless and utterly ruthless – his singular goal is to preserve his race through the genocide of ours and that’s okay with him. As for Crowe – forgetting he ever tried to sing alongside Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables – he’s back to his Oscar award-winning roots, turning a hand at dramatic monologues and powerful fatherly advice. Like the emotion he stirred in Gladiator, he’s evoking a sense of power and importance in his son’s mission through his words. But it’s not all unfun and no games – there are cute references to classic Superman elements: Lex Luthur, Lana Lang (Clark’s high school crush) and Smallville (the place he grew up in Kanas). There’s also the inclusion of one Lois Lane, played by Amy Adams far more convincingly than Teri Hatcher à la 1990s Lois. She’s a tricky character, caught between being the courageous journalist who you “wouldn’t find without a flak jacket strapped to my chest” and the damsel in distress falling from the sky, screaming for help. It’s a confusing position, but she’s given far more plot time and develops a convincing (and kind of sweet relationship) with her love interest. And thank God she’s not pretending to notice that Clark/ Kal-El are the same person – those glasses couldn’t fool anyone. Gone is the “yo-ho America” bravado – Man of Steel relies on more tangible stuff. Faced with hardship, difficult choices and forced to confront his own beliefs, Superman is a hero who is tested time and time again, but at the end of the day finds strength where man ultimately fails. After all, he is Super. WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER IN CINEMAS NATIONWIDE THU 27 JUN

FORZA 5 XBOX ONE PREVIEW

INFAMOUS: SECOND SON PS4 PREVIEW

When I reviewed inFamous back in 2009, I kinda liked it. Okay, fine, I raved about it. Looking back, I regret nothing: It was – and still is – one of the best games of the generation. Sucker Punch are obviously keen to get the next generation off to a hiss and a roar, because game three in the series is going to be one of the first games available on PlayStation 4 when it releases early next year. Delsin, the new hero, is (of course) a gifted young man, with abilities that grant him all sorts of advantages in combat. This is particularly handy, given Delsin’s agenda is directly at odds with the “dupes” (Second Son’s enemy faction). A free-roaming game, kinda like Grand Theft Auto, your character traverses the environments with both ease and gusto, leaping from building to building and unleashing all manner of crazy, explosive, electric attacks on any who dare to get in his way. The section of gameplay we were shown at E3 was a chaotic sequence in which Delsin faced off against a sizeable force of dupes at the base of the Space Needle. After sneaking around a little bit, the Sucker Punch developer at the controls cast of his character’s anonymity in spectacular fashion, leveraging Delsin’s smoke-based powers to warp straight through a gate and right up to one of the patrolling guards, whom he then smashed face-first into the ground. After that, the proverbial excrement was flung with some gusto directly into the rapidly spinning blades of a nearby air-moving device. It all looks amazing in action: The combination of superpowers – even those few we’ve seen – look exciting to leverage, the enemies look like fun to beat into the ground, and the world is very much the kind of place I want to explore.

Right in the throbbing heart of Microsoft’s enormous green E3 booth, Bill Giese (Forza 5’s design director) sat down to walk me through his latest game. Here was a man brimming with pride over his baby, and just how good he thinks it is – after he was done, I could understand why. He told us about the cars first and how they looked. You have the ability to walk around each of the cars you own in Forza Vista, view them from all angles, get in behind the wheel, or start ‘em up to hear the engine purr. You could do this with a limited selection of your fleet in Forza 4, but this has now been enhanced to include every car you own. Forza 5 offers multiple ways to customise your cars, providing the ability to pull down paint jobs from the cloud, including ones developed by the fan community. The interface will also learn and remember the kinds of paint jobs you like, and make relevant selections every time you log in. A great deal of work is going into how Forza 5 looks. Two things were considered to be absolute essentials during development: The display needed to be 60 frames per second and 1080p. Additionally, the team felt that the cars in Forza 4 looked a little “too” perfect, so they’re adding an air of imperfection to make it more realistic. For example, the “orange peel” effect of a real paint job or a streak in the armor all you lovingly buffed your beauty with. He also took great pains to stress that the new “Drivatar” feature is not AI: It’s real, remembered behaviours and tendencies taken from the way you drive. This makes the way the other cars on the track race that much more realistic. The soundscape and music were carefully constructed: Skywalker Sound was provided some in-game footage and the instructions “make us a soundtrack, just like it’s a movie”. So they did. The finished product was recorded with a full orchestra and the sounds change when the car corners or accelerates, adding realism.

Based on what I’ve seen so far, I can already tell it’s going to be worth the wait. By far, this is now my most anticipated game of the next generation and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

There are still many things to be announced: The final car numbers, Smartglass integration, physics advances, multiplayer and the tracks that will be available. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I expect only to be further impressed, as the new details are unveiled.

PREACHING TO THE CHOIR MANIC STREET PREACHERS PLAY NEW ZEALAND FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER AT THE VECTOR ARENA ON TUE 02 JUL. GROOVE GUIDE HAD A QUICK CHAT ABOUT LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING THAT MUST GO!

Finally… it’s taken a British Lions tour of the Great Southern Land to inspire UK’s greatest pop antagonists to make a trip to our shores. Next month, as part of an Aussie tour, Welsh band Manic Street Preachers will play Vector Arena. The band formed almost as a reaction to the late 80’s stench of Thatcherism with its miner’s strikes, harsh economic measures and class wars, to become one of UK rock’s most enduring musical entities. For three young Welsh lads from Blackwood, Wales, class and gender politics, literature, art and glamour were red rags to the proverbial bull of teenage frustration. Early records were distributed through independent labels and music journals but it wasn’t long before they attracted the attention of the big time sheets like NME and Melody Maker. Recently Q magazine named them ‘National Treasures’. “Ah, yeah. Now I feel old. It’s funny how you bang away knocking down everything, only to replace it yourself.” I suggest that the phrase “National Treasure” feels more like an obelisk in Trafalgar Square and he laughs in agreement. The early Manics adopted every attention-seeking tool at their disposal, spray-painting political slogans on the shirts. Their first EP, New Art Riot (1990), attracted as much media interest for its attacks on fellow musicians as for the actual music. It spawned the self-effacing single ‘You Love Us’, which continues to be a beloved live number. After recruiting the brilliant lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards they created a debut double album (Generation Terrorists), which was a full on assault against banks (‘Natwest, Barclays, Midlands, Lloyds’), gender politics, schooling, and fashion. The album, now celebrating its 20th anniversary borrows heavily from philosophy, literature and even poets like Patrick Jones (‘Motorcycle Emptiness’). The album even included a duet with former porn star Tracy Lord (‘Little Baby Nothing’). Edward worked closely with Wire on lyrics and the band’s image. “They were the creative engine, Sean and I did the music and rhythm,” Bradford reminds me. Edwards was famously documented for carving ‘4 Real’ into his arm with a razor blade after his sincerity was challenged by an NME journalist. Edwards’ mental health had been in question around the time of their third album, The Holy Bible, which tackled topics like

anorexia. He even spent time in rehab. Strangely, Edwards disappeared mysteriously just prior to going on tour in February 1995 and was never seen again. Does Bradford still miss Richey? “Yes, we all do. Many times we write almost as if he’s there. Nicky, writes his lyrics sometimes as if he’s got Richey looking over his shoulder. He reads books that Richey was reading, like he was recommending them.” Almost to prove that point, he reminds me that in May 2009 the band had released an album based on Richey’s work. Journal for Plague Lovers, which featured features lyrics left behind by Edwards. “We had this sort of ‘responsibility’ to do his lyrics some sort of justice, and to keep him alive.” Edwards was declared presumed dead in November 2008. And speaking of releases, the band is up to its 11th/12th, having announced back in November last year that they were recording two albums simultaneously in very different styles. “We are finished and we’ll have something out soon. Two albums, one will be a folk sort of thing; softer, more acoustic and gentle, lots of horns. You know a real Atlantic soul thing. But the other is more anathematic: more spikey, lots of (electric) guitar. Back to our usually yelling and stomping!” While he’s still not revealing the title, Bradford notes that one of the songs to be included, ‘Four Lonely Roads’, features Carmarthenshire psych-folk singer Cate Le Bon. “She has a great voice. We’ve worked collaboratively before so I wanted to try her out.” The group have been recording around South Wales and in the Hansa studio in Berlin, where David Bowie created Heroes. “Yeah, that was interesting. I was reminded of my early penchant for military uniforms,” he jokes remembering his fashion choices around the release of Gold against the Soul (1993). I commented that when Morrissey was here recently, his band all wore the uniform of the All Blacks. Being a keen rugby supporter perhaps he could adopt the uniform of his favourite team? “I don’t think I’d fit the Blackwood Juniors Jersey any more!” WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR SEE THEM LIVE: MANIC STREET PREACHERS TUE 02 JUL VECTOR ARENA, AUCKLAND
