In 2012, Cody launched his first-ever European headlining tour and hit the road as support for Justin Bieber’s U.S. and European Believe Tour, playing to crowds of 20,000. “It was a great experience for me. I was really motivated to make my show even better by watching what Justin and his team were doing on the Believe Tour,” Cody says. MGMT are back with their self-titled third studio album - MGMT - set to be released on September 17 (US). Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Coproducer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of “Introspection” by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyda. Keep your eye out for a New Zealand release date.

This week Mai FM begans broadcasting across Gisborne on 89.3FM, bringing New Zealand’s hip hop and RnB to the East Coast. Program Director, DJ and pioneer of NZ Hip Hop, DJ Sir-Vere says: “We are stoked to be launching into Gisborne knowing we already have listeners here. We’ve been petitioned by the locals to get ourselves to the coast and now we can finally deliver great hip hop and RnB.” The new 89.3FM frequency for Mai FM will carry existing programming, including Mai Mornings with Nickson and Nate from 6am weekdays and K’Lee across the day.

In September Elton John will release The Diving Board. The new album is set to be hailed as a sophisticated new chapter. All of the songs on The Diving Board were written by John and his career-long lyrical collaborator, Bernie Taupin. It was recorded at The Village in Los Angeles and produced by T-Bone Burnett. “It’s a very musical album,” says Elton. “There’s a lot to take in. Radio Ponsonby presents Mixed Messages Britomart Country Club featuring Kirk James, Nigel Love and special guests. 100% vinyl sounds every Tuesday night mean it’s kicking it old school in a cheerful way – no digital tech, tricky stuff (kind of). Just records as God – and musicians – intended.
For every cynical, darker-than-theDark-Knight, brooding musician, there should be a Mavis Staples. She’s like a soothing balm, with a solid, unflappable demeanour and the voice to match. One True Vine continues her strong run of late, following on from 2010’s excellent, You Are Not Alone. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy adds to his busy schedule by producing both albums, also writing much of the music and playing nearly all the instruments on this latest record (except for drums where he drafted in his son, Spencer). One True Vine plays to its singers strength, focusing on a mix of gospel and soul while switching between original pieces and covers with ease. Tweedy handpicked the songs for just that reason, with subsequent results making it hard to fault his selection. Even in the slightest. Proceedings open with ‘Holy Ghost,’ a cover from Minnesota indie-darlings, Low, and reborn here by way of Miss Staples engrossing delivery. She owns the song much like Mimi Parker does the Low version, but Ma adds her vast years to the lyric, a weight that gives her words a weary yet enduring undertone. Those decades are further laid bare on gospel track, ‘Far Celestial Shore,’ a short but gorgeous tune, and ‘What Are They Doing In Heaven Today,’ a lengthier ditty that encompasses the thoughtfulness of One True Vine. Both acknowledge a contemplation of time and mortality, with Ma wringing every drop of wistful
wonder out of her vocals. The pace quickens on ‘Sow Good Seeds,’ an ol’ timey classic that melds Ma and Tweedy’s voices with some supple slide guitar... again provided courtesy of the Wilco front man. ‘I Like The Things About Me’ brings it all back to the future, with a swampy, blues-rock flavour that could have wandered in straight off of a Black Keys album. If anything, the track highlights what might be a great co-lab for the future, if the Keys and Mavis get together. Back to the present, and One True Vine closes with its title track, an appropriately chosen cover by - take a guess - Wilco. It’s not quite the showcase closer you might expect for Ma’s big finale (okay, so that’s one song selection slightly faulted), but it does a nice job of rounding off the musical relationship between Staples and Tweedy. They’re one hell-of-a match, so here’s hoping Ma and Jeff continue this partnership for many more albums to come. WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN

Director Richard Linklater revisits distant lovebirds Jesse and Celine (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) in Greece, nine years after being reacquainted in Before Sunset and almost two decades since they first met on the train in Before Sunrise. It’s being hailed as one to watch, so you better school up on the first two!
Ryan Gosling has seduced the Tumblrverse but it seems he has a hold on directors too. The Gos reprises the role of muse for Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, glowering as the troubled pivot of this father-son epic and doling out a gut-grabbing, moving performance as a staunch motorcycle stunt rider. Too often we see loser dads on screen willfully abandoning their children and responsibilities. The Place Beyond the Pines bucks this with dads desperately trying to do their best for their offspring, despite their own shortcomings. Sure, there are fantastic action set pieces with bank busts, speeding motorbikes and police chases, but the soul of the film lies in its emotional drive and that’s what propels the story along, even
when the structure rides roughshod over convention. It’s a film of two halves with Bradley Cooper making a late entrance as the conflicted hero and, like Gosling, impressively flexing his leading man acting moves. Cianfrance stretches the scope of the film well beyond crime thriller, reaching for an almost operatic scale commentary on consequences and legacy. It’s ambitious, self-conscious and overegged at times, but there is enough grit and uniformly strong showings from the star-supporting cast (Ray Liotta, Eva Mendes and Australian Ben Mendelsohn cementing his Hollywood breakthrough off the back of Animal Kingdom) to pack a poignant punch. On a recent car journey, I told my daughter “Stay in school, work hard and have a dream. Have a plan for what you want to be when you grow up.” “Like the band Editors?” she asked, “a band that got together whilst studying music technology at Staffordshire University, a good platform for their dark-edgy, post Franz Ferdinand template pop.” “Exactly,” I replied, “exactly.” “Ha, you did not,” laughs Editors’ bassist/synth player Russell Leetch, “but I know what you’re saying. It was at school that we got our act together. We were playing various kinds of music and it all came together. We did that for some time and after a while you need you directions.” Well, that wasn’t what I was implying, but go on…. “The first two albums [2005’s The Back Room and 2007’s An End Has A Start] were pretty driven but when we did In This Light And On This Evening [2009] we were starting to work away from the original sound. For this new album, we were after more… space. Like bands such as REM, the way they put the landscape in their sound… So we packed up the whole Editors’ village [partners, kids and entourage] and jump on a plane.” A bold move, heading to the Deep South of the US of A is a pretty big for a band grounded in a tradition of Euro-pop. Until now hits like ‘Bullets’, ‘Munich’, ‘Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors’ and ‘Bones’ all arched menacingly like a swinging light bulb in an interrogation room. But the new work was more melancholic, deep thinking, contemplative. “When Chris [Urbanowicz, founding member and lead guitarist] left and Justin [Lockey] and Elliot [Williams] joined it felt like Editors MkII – a new band with a new sound. So we went about as far as we could.” That distance was found by checking in at Blackbird Studios in Nashville where they hooked up with producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Norah Jones, Of Monsters And Men, Kings Of Leon). The resulting product The Weight Of Your Love is a “well different album, a real departure from what we’ve done before.”

GROOVE TALKS TO RUSSELL LEETCH OF EDITORS ON THE IMPENDING RELEASE FOR THE NEW ALBUM.
I noted that Tom Smith [lead vocals, guitar, piano] describes the new album as “having a foot in that alt rock/Americana world” and of “feeling untouchable at times”. “We did it mostly live,” adds Leetch. It contains their most direct songs to date and also features extra production from Clint Mansell on ‘Nothing’, rescored from the original to become what Tom and Ed Lay [drums, percussion, backing vocals] both describe as the “centerpiece” of the album. Lyrically, it’s focused on “love songs... that don’t adhere to the traditional love song type”, says Smith. “I’d agree,” notes Leetch, “though, they’re not creepy, or stalker-like, you know.” The album sees Smith sing in falsetto for the first time on ‘What Is This Thing Called Love’, which is a turn down a sweeter road. “I guess being in the dessert gives us the freedom to go a bit crazy,” comments Leetch, “because we could shine these long mirrors at each other and see what reflects back. The light out there is so bright, the glare of hope I guess.” Interesting - since the new album really feels like a compliment to the recent works of other like-minded bands, such as the National. “Well, there’s a compliment. That’s the antidote to the grimy brick walls of an English studio.” And that has to be a good thing. Speaking of which, I ask. What’s the best thing about the South? What might have left a mark on you? “Mmmm,” he thinks, “The beer. Definitely! Not Miller Lite. The real stuff. Better than a pint of brown ale. The Potbelleez were formed in Sydney in 2003 as an electro-house and dance music group. Both founders David Greene (aka Dave Goode) and Jonathon Murphy (Jonny Sonic) were born in Dublin, Ireland. In 2003 Brisbane-born rapper Blue MC (Marisa Lock) was working in London as one half of a beatbox duo Streetbox with MC Xander on drum machine and vocals. By 2005 The Potbelleez were working in Sydney and when Blue MC returned to Australia she joined the group. Soon after the trio begun playing live and in 2006 Ilan Kidron (aka iKid) joined on vocals. What is the ethos behind Fine Tuned? Fine Tuned is the brand that runs the events and is also an agency attached to the labels. While each label has its own ethos Fine Tuned is the umbrella that is driving the development and export of NZ talent within the genres we are working with. Proudest Moment of 2013? Shallow Taxi Club – ‘Nights Turn Brighter EP’ hitting #1 in all genres on junodownload.com, but in general terms I am very proud that we have achieved all the goals for both labels we have set out thus far. What is the secret to longevity in the NZ electronic scene? Love what you do. Enjoy the music and have a good laugh with people. The best piece of advice you could give to up and coming producers? TRUTH SOUNDSYSTEM SELECTAHS Most people categorise Truth as dubstep producers. How does Truth define themselves musically? “Soundsystem music” would be the broadest definition we could give. To clarify: everything we do has some sort of cinematic, dark or moody element and we do try to make music, which can be listened to at home. However, underlinning each track is always a solid sub-bassline, which needs a quality soundsystem to really be appreciated properly and to its fullest extent. What are the biggest changes you’ve found to relocating from Christchurch to San Francisco? San Francisco is the epitome of a cosmopolitan world city. It’s a fusion of so many different influences: cultural, culinary, musical, social... there’s always something going on. Which is one of the reasons we started our ‘Deep, Dark and Dangerous’ night on a Tuesday night there. First of all, people are prepared to go out until 2-3am on a Tuesday. It’s also a big enough city where we could start to develop a particular sub-culture within the genre, on a school night, where we knew that those who came out were there to hear the music we are out to provide them. That night goes off too! We’ve built it up to the point where it’s always really good! A fair bit of your music uses news broadcast and spoken word from movies. How much time do you spend watching movies, TV, documentaries / researching samples? We go through phases. Sometimes we might spend time every day for a week picking through audio, which we have ripped from various sources. Other times we’ll just be on the lookout when watching a documentary. Say, if we hear something we like, we’ll try to remember, or write down the time to revisit later in the studio. The record you’ve made, you are most proud of (and why)? ‘Devil’s Hands / I Belong’ [Tempa] . I am stoked with the huge reaction this 12” has received and the label (Tempa) it’s on. It’s also a good representation of the current Truth sound and both tracks compliment each other. It’s been a year since you released your second album Love Shadow as a free download. Is there a new album in the works? We intend to write the next album from start to finish as one distinct project to give it it’s own identity. Right now it’s about timing. We have so much coming out over the next 9 months. Multiple 12”s on Tempa, an EP on Rottun and another on Deep Medi, as well as some more stuff we’re currently locking down. Realistically, for an album we’d need a little more space, so we’re currently thinking early 2014 for the next full-length album. REad the interview in full online
TOM PIPER AUSTRALIAN FRESHMAKER Years Producing: If you count playing round on a 303 or on Cubase at school, perhaps like about nine years ha ha, but I’ve only had things actually happening proper more recently. Affiliate Labels: Bakehaus Records, No Frills Label, Ministry Of Sound Australia, Hussle, Downright. Those are ones I have current releases coming on. I have had releases on many others but I wouldn’t claim them as my labels ya know. Some of the artists you’ve worked with: Tommy Trash, Daniel Farley, 360, Bone Thugs, Snob Scrilla, Bluejuice, Nom De Strip, Kissy Sell Out, Micky Slim, Chrome, Blaze Tripp, Ray Foxx, Wax Motif & many other vibemasters. I really enjoy doing collabs with peeps, way more fun in the studio! Please describe your ‘sound’: I actually find this quite difficult to do cause I really do lots of different stuff and don’t really stick to a specific genre... lets just say – fresh and with vibe. How did you get your first big break? I had lots of already established producers & DJs help me along the way which was really important. I can’t really remember any specific thing. I got where I am atm by doing lots of hard work and good support from friends and the scene. What are you currently most excited about... musically? Mmmmm, I dunno. I love getting in the studio and playing round with new vibes and combining them with older things to create new music. What is a little known skill you possess? I’m pretty awesome at filling up the studio with more toys and unneeded crap than music gear haha, and I got heaps of gear so imagine how much BS there is. Still good but. Who is the person you’d most like to snapchat with? Was going to say something stupid but I reckon it’d be pretty cool to get snapchats from Will Ferrell, he’s mad funny on twitter and be sick on snapchat - no porno vibes but thanksssss. What’s the best thing about Hamilton, New Zealand? I don’t really know too much about Hamilton, but last time I played there it was pretty sick, so I’m expecting some proper vibes for Our House!

The follow-up to best-selling Ashes Cricket 2009, Ashes Cricket 2013 is officially licensed by ECB, the MCC, and Cricket Australia. The stadia are also all licensed, and this is the first time the MCG has ever officially featured in a videogame. For true fans, the addition of this historic ground will be a welcome addition to the realism of the title.
As part of the announcement of the PlayStation 4, Blizzard revealed that they were going to make a return to consoles with the impending release of Diablo III. The game is also coming to the Xbox 360, and that’s the version I recently went hands-on with. If the always-online requirement or player auction house of the PC version of Diablo III bothered you, the console version might be what you’ve been waiting for: It has neither of those features. What it does have is direct control of your character, eliminating the one gripe I had with the PC version: These games (the very action-y type) just aren’t as fun when your interaction is largely mouse-based. The new controls and removal of controversial features aren’t the only changes – you can also dodge now, giving you an excellent tool to use when trying to get out of danger. It works very well, too, and feels like it belongs – in fact, I’ll be hard pressed going back to the PC version, where it’s not available. The inventory screen has also been significantly streamlined (it’s a radial wheel, instead of a paper doll – much easier to use with an analogue stick), and there’s also a quick-equip feature that lets you scroll through recent drops and start using them – all with the D-pad, and without opening any screens (so you can do it as you run around, basically). It all looked good too. The visual style (if not the resolution) came across to the 360 intact, and it seems fair to assume the PS4 variant (when it comes) will look a lot like the PC version. I think the most telling thing is that, despite playing it a lot on PC, my interest in the game has re-intensified now that I’ve had a taste of the console version. Direct control of your character works well, even for ranged classes, and it’s clear that Blizzard are applying their “no half measures” development approach to the game. If, like me, you were a fan of games such as Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath, don’t even hesitate – pre-order it. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL
There’s a new “behind the batsman” view, which provides a much more realistic angle on the action, more like the kind that you would see in real life. This also allows you to watch the ball come out of the bowler’s hand for added realism. As a bowler, you have a completely new mechanic, designed to make it much more realistic. Based on feedback from fans, the developers have created an allnew matrix, based on line and length, which is far more like the way real bowlers have to aim at a batsman. No two deliveries are going to be the same, and you can choose from a variety of balls, generating outswing, or off-cutters – if you can master them. The game also captures the way cricket is played in differing conditions around the world: Obviously in England, swing is more of a factor, with the cloud cover and dismal weather, where the beating sun of the WACA or Gabba in Australia are better suited for pace bowlers. You can move and alter field positions as you wish, and also have the option to save the field you might set for a player who consistently hits to midfield. So every time that player takes the field, you can set the same field, to hopefully try and exploit his weaknesses and snag his wicket. The developer I spoke to explained that the commentary is a lot more predictive than in previous sports games, won’t be so repetitive, and has a lot more content. The commentators might even provide some tips to the player, such as suggesting that the addition of a fielder at long-on to stop the runs leaking through. The version I saw was definitely still in development, but the graphics looked impressive, with facial capture and the ambience in the stadia really making you feel like you were watching a game on television.
