WELLINGTON SEA SHANTY SOCIETY GOLDEN DAWN

Mayer Hawthorne’s latest album is a collection of dirty sexy love songs. Musically, the record is seductive and surprisingly calm. The music itself acts as more of a background for the lyrics and the storytelling on the record. It’s groovy and the vocal work is fantastically smooth; you can feel that Hawthorne is in control of his range and commands the melodies. ‘Reach Out Richard’ is the prime example of how melodic Hawthorne can be and the minimalistic instrumentation draws

you right into Hawthorne’s vocals and lyrics. On the other hand, ‘Backseat Lover’ has a jazz room-esque feel and follows the short album introduction seamlessly. “If I gotta be/ your cheap backseat lover man/well let’s get it on then” sings Hawthorne, handing himself over with little resistance. The track is the absolutely perfect, musically and vocally balanced; it sets you up for the rest of the album. ‘Crime’ sounds refreshingly different, while fitting into the other tracks on the record. Hawthorne reaches higher pitches and this tracks involves much more active beat than some of the other tracks. Album closer ‘All Better’ is the stand out track on the record, a gentle slow piano behind the vocals, it feels almost a capella until it slides into a string arrangement and comes back down. The track is touching, melancholic, and sweet, it’s Hawthorne at his rawest and the mood lingers for a few moments afterwards WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY

THE CARS

The Cars is the eponymous debut studio album by American rock band The Cars, released on June 6, 1978 via Elektra. While most bands in the late ‘70s were either embracing punk/new wave or hard rock, The Cars were one of the first bands to merge the two styles together. Add to this frontman and songwriter Ric Ocasek’s sweet pop sensibilities and the resulting album suddenly had mass appeal. The Boston-based quintet not only proved that a humble rock band could conquer the airwaves, (with ‘Just What I Needed’ and ‘My Best Friend’s Girl’ getting plenty of radioplay), they also achieved considerable chart success. Having sold one million copies by the end of 1978, The Cars peaked at number 18 on the Billboard

With familiar hits such as ‘My Best Friend’s Girlfriend’ and ‘Good Times Roll’, or the rocking riffs and swooshing synths of ‘Just What I Needed’, it seems somewhat inevitable that these tracks were going to become classics. But like most inimitable rock albums, the lesser-known compositions have plenty to offer too. The fast-paced ‘Don’tcha Stop’, the poppy charm of ‘Bye Bye Love’, or closing tracks ‘Moving In Stereo’ - offering a darker, more atmospheric point of view - and ‘All Mixed Up’ with its classy sax solo. What started as a merging of guitarorientated rock with new wave synthpop, The Cars’ debut has gone on to become an all time classic, whichever genre you want to look at it from. WRITTEN BY REN KIRK

THE WORLD’S END

THE HISTORY CHANNEL, 7.30pm

Each hour of this series will take viewers on a captivating, revealing, and sometimes shocking tour of the US’ past. The series casts its net wide, exploring the corners and backrooms of institutions dedicated to a variety of popular and entertaining subjects. directed by Edgar Wright Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN RIALTO CHANNEL, 8.30pm

Cape Town record shop owner and music fan Stephen Segerman, meets music journalist Craig BartholomewStrydom. The pair team up and decide to try and find out what happened to Rodriguez, despite prevailing and conflicting rumours of his death.

FRI 26 JUL SUPER CITY - Season 2 TV3, 10PM

Madeleine Sami returns in the second season of Super City. Directed by Oscar Kightley, the series will focus on four new characters, all portrayed by Madeleine Sami. There’s Ofa Faka’apa’apa, ; Levi Tutaima, Mary Dalziel and Brit Ray Donaldson.

Concluding their loose ‘Cornetto trilogy’ after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, The World’s End sees director Edgar Wright reteam with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and the result is some of the best work they’ve committed to screen. Shaun may be almost ten years old (and their TV show Spaced even older), but the trio have lost none of their chemistry, with The World’s End benefiting greatly from these gentlemen being a little older and more experienced craftsmen. Wright in particular seems set on making the film his own, with lower levels of homage or parody than its predecessors. As with their previous films there’s a strong genre component, this time honing in on late ‘70s/early ‘80s sci-fi (think The Stepford Wives, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, John Carpenter films and loads of UK telly). While this aspect of the film is gradually unveiled, the other major thread of

The World’s End is on offer from the get-go, with Simon Pegg’s character spurring his 40-something mates on to revisit the best night of his life, an aborted teen pub crawl. Nostalgia falls under the spotlight just as squarely as sci-fi carry-on, but don’t think for minute that this is an overly serious film despite its musings on growing up. Side-splittingly hilarious, The World’s End deftly balances its character work with lashings of comedy and impressive action sequences. These show how much of a grip Wright has on this stuff, hinting at what he’s capable of when he tackles Ant-Man for Marvel later this year. Bursting with great performances, full of gags, with more film references than you could shake a stick at and one hell of an ending, The World’s End is damnnear compulsory viewing. The Wolverine The Wolverine opens in theatres this Wed 24 Jul, the sixth installment in the X-Men film series, and following on from X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Featuring the Marvel Comics character Logan/ Wolverine, Hugh Jackman once again plays the iconic-clawed mutant’s title character, with James Mangold directing a screenplay written by Christopher McQuarrie, Scott Frank, and Mark Bomback. Based on the 1982 limited series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, The Wolverine takes Logan from America to Tokyo, only to become inextricably drawn into a twisted labyrinth of deceit and treachery. Out of his element in a culture that is entirely foreign, he confronts a host of formidably vicious and deadly adversaries; from Yakuza to mobsters, as well as Viper and the legendary Silver Samurai. He also faces his own inner demons and the bleak destiny that is inevitable for a man who is immortal. “This story takes The Wolverine into a world that is vastly different from any seen before in the X-Men series,” says Hugh Jackman, who also serves as a producer on the film. “There are a lot of battles in this story, but the greatest battle of all is the one within Logan between being a monster and a becoming a human being.” From the start Mangold (best known for Walk The Line and 3:10 to Yuma) wanted to break the mold of the comic book-based film. He explains: “The Wolverine was about doing something quite different from the standard superhero movie, where it’s about stopping a villain’s diabolical plot.” In line with this the action and suspense are built more on character, and woven into a new world - which makes for a completely different kind of experience. Despite this, the action is visceral from start to finish, but juxtaposed with the beauty of Japan. “The atmosphere of Japan seeps through the movie,” Jackman observes. “For Logan it has the effect of wiping clean all his normal ways of interacting with people. He has to start fresh.” Logan goes on to learn about the Samurai code, which he’s initially distrustful of. “He starts to gain respect for the idea of being a warrior, for the sense of service that they have. And he starts to become the better version of himself.” From the start, Jackman was committed to taking Wolverine to new levels of physicality, which involved the most intensive and disciplined preparation regime he has undergone yet. “I started training and a very strict diet well in advance… and I think the results have really paid off.” Learning new fighting styles was also paramount to the performance. “I

24 | grooveguide.co.nz

have always portrayed Wolverine as a street fighter and a pub brawler. But one of the great things about this story is that when he comes to Japan, he starts to really take discipline and training to heart.” Surrounding Logan on his journey is an international cast of characters. To play the vital role of Shingen Yashida (the leader of a vast criminal empire and father of Wolverine’s new love Mariko), Mangold fittingly chose a man who is himself a legend of Japanese film, Hiroyuki Sanada (Twilight, Ring, The Last Samurai, Rush Hour 3). Sanada’s well-honed Samurai skills also benefited other cast members as he shared his broad knowledge of martial arts action, including with first-time actor Rila Fukushima, who plays sword-wielding bodyguard Yukio, one of the deadliest assassins in Shingen’s clan. Although The Wolverine takes place away from the X-Men team, there are appearances from figures in Logan’s past, including Jean Grey, the telekinetic mutant, played once again by Famke Janssen. “Our scenes are dream-like, beautiful, intimate, and perhaps a little disturbing,” Janssen hints, “and they really help to connect the unique experience of this story to the rest of the X-Men mythology.” To capture Logan’s perilous journey to rediscover the hero inside, there were other important visual elements. Director of photography Ross Emery, production designer François Audouy and costume designer Isis Mussenden each contributed to a design that mixes together elements of noir cinema, Japanese folklore, graphic novel iconography and intense personal drama. On the film, Audouy also was involved in the creation of Wolverine’s nemesis, the Silver Samurai, whose pose-able mechanical suit was built from the ground up. “The suit was made up of over 600 parts, each separately designed and modeled in a computer. When you read it on the page you think, ‘Ah, of course it’ll be CG.’ But it was pretty cool that we got the opportunity to build a real 13-foot robot that kicks ass.” With thundering action, breathtaking stunts and a rivetingly gritty storyline The Wolverine won’t disappoint fans, and is sure to create plenty of new devotees. And for those not so keen on this sort of actionfantasy genre, surely the promise of Hugh Jackman buffer than ever before is worth something? WRITTEN BY REN KIRK THE WOLVERINE IN CINEMAS WED 24 JUL

PATH OF EXILE SUPPORTS TWITCH Auckland-based Grinding Gear Games have announced the integration of Twitch live-streaming technology into their free-to-play RPG, Path of Exile. Twitch allows Path of Exile players to stream gameplay from within the game itself, as well as adding webcam overlays and supporting Twitch channel chat. “We’ve witnessed first-hand the rapidly growing appeal of live streaming gameplay, so it’s great to see Grinding Gear Games integrate Twitch functionality into a compelling title like Path of Exile,” said Twitch’s Matthew DiPietro. “Equally notable is they’ve embraced Twitch’s ability to leverage game data to make leaderboards more dynamic so that players are able to know when their competition is streaming.” The additional functionality comes as part of patch 0.11.2, which is live now and also makes significant changes to the Ranger starting area, as well as numerous other tweaks.

REVIEW: MAGIC THE GATHERING - DUELS OF THE PLANESWALKERS 2014 XBOX 360, PC, IPAD Magic the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 is the latest iteration in the digital version of the tabletop collectible card game. The card game has an immense following and has been around since the early 1990s. The game (both versions) revolves around playing with a deck of cards, which includes creatures, spells, artifacts, and mana cards. A player summons creatures onto the table who attack the enemy and reduce their health. Simple! New decks in this version of the game are very impressive, and contain some absolutely awesome cards. The artwork is top notch, and makes for a beautiful and engrossing experience. The new “Sealed Play” feature is made all the more enjoyable, thanks to virtually simulating the feeling of unwrapping new booster packs and building your own decks from scratch.

MAG, SOCOM SERVERS TO SHUT DOWN NEXT YEAR Sony have announced that servers for MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and SOCOM: Special Forces will be shut down on January 28th next year. In the case of MAG in particular, the closure date will be two days after its fourth birthday (January 26th); SOCOM Confrontation originally released in 2008, while Special Forces first landed in April of 2011. The closure will be of particular note in the case of the MAG and Confrontation communities, as both games are focused solely on online multiplayer; without servers to support them, neither will be playable. Sony have not made any recent statements regarding the future of the SOCOM franchise, however Shuhei Yoshida - president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios suggested in June of last year that its eventual return is not beyond the realms of possibility.

The best part? New foil packs are unlocked digitally and require no real world money, so you simply need to make a deck and play with it. It is good to see that Wizards of the Coast haven’t gone down the micro-transactions pathway when it comes to acquiring new cards. Unfortunately, you are limited to just two slots for your own Sealed Play decks - but you can unlock more, for a small fee. An avoidance of micro-transactions means that Magic the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 makes for a balanced experience online and this is definitely the area where you will be wanting to spend most of your time. Once you have crafted a deck, there is no better way than to test its resilience than against another human opponent. Here, not much has changed on the surface, and the multiplayer is a smooth and well-designed experience allowing up to four people to play against each other. When I first played Magic the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014, I was expecting the same experience as last year, simply with new decks. The new Sealed Play game mode really adds to the Magic the Gathering feel, however, significantly changing things for the better. I’ve found building my owns decks to be one of the most enjoyable elements the game and this is really the feature that makes this year’s iteration a must-have for Magic the Gathering fans. Jake Bugg One of Britain’s most exciting new talents, Jake Bugg, has been scheduled to play a one-off show on our shores for the first and hopefully not the last time next week in Auckland.

pairing retro folk with contemporary rock riffs. Writing about his own personal experiences he manages to bring his view to the mainstream, with a wider cultural connection.

Described as a visceral and exciting talent he has ticked boxes for critics and music-lovers alike the world over. At just 19-years-old Bugg’s success is huge, impressive even. The working class lad from Nottingham comes from a broken home and dropped out of music school at 16. While a story like that makes a great bio for despondent and hopeful youth to relate to his current standing is an elevation that will stay a distant dream too far out of reach for most.

There is a developed sense of authenticity in his writing that has been fundamental in generating wide appeal; he is a tailor creating instant connections with music fans. His is a sound of simplicity, pure and unpretentious, the songs are described as perfectly poised and somewhat poignant lyrical tales.

Bugg’s musical story, the current bit anyway - he came from two musically inclined parents, started in 2011 atop the BBC’s “introducing” stage at the Glastonbury Festival. Like a quick firing domino tumble everything got big.

The world’s music critics have been busy with their branders. His debut is laced with wit and his melody and lyricism has drawn comparisons to classic songwriters like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, as well as modern greats like The Arctic Monkeys, Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher.

Mercury Records snapped Bugg up and he released his self-titled debut album last October to rapturous success. The album, Jake Bugg, quickly climbed to number one in the United Kingdom’s album charts followed closely in the singles charts by ‘Lightning Bolt’ and ‘Two Fingers’ which topped out at 26th and 28th respectively.

Rolling Stone Magazine described his music as, “The Sound of Rock ‘n’ Roll being newly discovered.” Even our own provinces have been pretty excited about his talent with The Waikato Times saying, “Simply, Jake Bugg is the greatest mature-thinking youngest singer-songwriter to come out of Britain in an age... yes Bugg is that good.”

He’s been nominated for big awards this year like NME’s Best Album and Best Solo Artist, and the BRIT Award’s British Breakthough Act. He didn’t win them but nomination itself amongst a cast of impressive names like Ben Howard, Alt-J, and Rita Ora is pretty respectable.

Some pretty big names have leapt on the Bugg-buzz. The Stone Roses invited him to open for their secret London gig and brother-loving Noel Gallagher got Bugg to trail him around Europe with his own band The High Flying Birds, and Snow Patrol.

While all that could quickly go to your head he has remained humble, not shy in letting people know he’s more interested in playing shows then attending awards ceremonies. He’s quoted as saying about the BRIT Awards, “If I’ve got nowt to do I might swing by. I’ve got one day off from the tour. I don’t know yet – I might go. I might just skip the do and head to the after party. I’ll wake up on Wednesday morning and just see how I feel, (my chances of winning are) very slim... I expect Rita Ora to win, but good luck to all of them.... it’s great (to be nominated) but I don’t really need an award to inspire me to keep writing music and playing my songs.”

Just two weeks before he lands on our shores Bugg will open for The Rolling Stones in London’s Hyde Park.

If you need convincing of his talent take a listen of latest single ‘Broken’. NME has said, “’Broken’ is a song of such towering beauty and elegance, it boggles the mind that a scruffy teenager barely old enough to shave could have written it.”

What’s so great about his music though? He is a seemingly unique artist
