NEWS IN OUR TIME
The legendary sing and songwriter, JJ Cale, has died after suffering a heart attack. In a statement on Cale’s official website it confirmed that the musician passed away at 8pm on Fri 26 Jul at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California. Cale released music under his own name but his greatest success came when artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Eric Clapton turned his songs into anthems.

London’s Pet Shop Boys are one of the most successful pop music acts of all time and rightfully so. For more than 30 years they have been bringing electronica to the masses and have had a hand in fashioning the pop landscape for future generations. All of this is glossing over the minor fact that they have won six Grammys and have dominated the UK singles charts no less than 40 times. The word “veteran” doesn’t seem to do them justice any more. With the release of Electric, album
Probably the most shocking inclusion on the album is the cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The Last To Die’. No, Pet Shop Boys have not gone all acoustic Dylan on us. Instead they re-imagine the gritty lyrics of the original as shimmering electro call-to-arms. Electric is a statement that Tennant and Lowe are not contented with resting on their laurels and letting their legacy sustain them. After all these years they are still as hungry and vital as ever. DANIEL BEDINGFIELD OPERA HOUSE
7.30PM, $61.50, TICKETEK.CO.NZ
He’s been called crazy, a dickhead and a terrible judge of musical talent. But in 2000, D Bedingfield was topping the charts and paving the way for garage music in NZ. Now, with a new sound and a career to redeem after he slaughtered many a contestant on The X Factor, catch the man himself live and unplugged.
The Stooges’ first album was produced by a classically trained composer and their second (July 1970) by former The Kingsmen keyboard player Don Gallucci. He recognised The Stooges were a powerhouse live band and wanted to recreate that feeling on Funhouse. The outcome was a record that delivered the low-tech wallop of a concert being pumped through a decent PA, and tracks that were bursting with energy and immediacy. With their incendiary frontman Iggy Pop (born James Osterburg), The Stooges (along with bands like Velvet Underground and MC5) were creating a philosophy that would go on to become the foundation of punk
Funhouse was also where Iggy Pop’s mad genius became evident; what was merely been a sneer or two on the band’s debut had grown into the roar of a caged animal, and his rants were more immediate and compelling. The band were much stronger second time round, with Ron Asheton’s blazing guitar, and the brutal, yet somewhat primitive pound of drummer Scott Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander. With the no frills, blues-doused ‘Down on the Street’, the punky garage raver ‘Loose’, the paranoid snarl of ‘T.V. Eye’, the primal scream of ‘1970’, and the calamitous anarchy of ‘L.A. Blues’, Funhouse was fueled by anger and fed on complacency. Although The Stooges may have had more hits on other albums, the apocalyptic garage meltdown of Funhouse is a perfect example of the band at their raw, sweaty, howling peak. WRITTEN BY REN KIRK

FRI 02 AUG
Banished to HBO in its native America for being “too gay”, Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace tell-all is actually scrupulously careful not to offend anyone: like Boogie Nights making nice. Based on the memoirs of Scott Thorson, the late pianist’s embittered ex-lover from 1977-1982, it’s a relatively sunny affair, swept along by charismatic performances from Damon and Douglas, two of Hollywood’s most reliable screen stars, plus familiar faces such as Dan Aykroyd and Scott ‘Quantum Leap’ Bakula. Douglas made his name playing powerful, morally questionable men, and this is a clever addition to the canon. Comedically queeny but with a core of steel, Liberace has a controlling interest in the youngsters he surrounds himself with. The latest is Damon – playing a teenager! – and though the two start out convincingly
hot for each other, Liberace’s narcissistic demands soon take their toll on an already imbalanced relationship. After an entertaining introduction to the star and his pampered, pantomime world, the film begins to meander, with a broad turn by Rob Lowe as a plasticky plastic surgeon and some overly telegraphed Big Biopic Moments not helping proceedings. Thankfully Soderbergh’s directorial flare brings things back into line before the big finale. What we’re left with is a gentle drama about people who, if you scratch the surface, must be genuinely damaged even if, for the most part, they’re enjoying themselves too much to let on. In fact, the only person who could feel short-changed is Douglas. No US cinema release means no Oscar nomination – and that’s offensive. WRITTEN BY FLICKS.CO.NZ

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? DIRECTOR LOUIS LETERRIER TRIES TO CAPTURE AUDIENCES WITH THE ART OF MAGIC IN NOW YOU SEE ME. There’s a certain similarity between the art of magic and movies: Creating a world of illusion, letting your audience see what you want them to see, instilling that sense of wonder and suspense in your crowd, which inevitably results in audible “oooos” and “ahhhs”. Like many amateur magicians, Now You See Me is not quite as polished as its predecessors (world-class movie magic such as The Prestige and even fainted-hearted copy The Illusionist), but delivers with a strong opening act and a killer finale, leaving you feel somewhat satisfied. Four very different magicians – the cocky J Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), his ex-assistant-turned-pro Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher), old hat mentalist Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) and new kid on the block Jack Wilder (James Franco’s little brother Dave) – roam the streets, using their skills for more personal gain than good. Brought together by four mysterious tarot cards, they form one power show, The Four Horsemen, and pull a Robin Hood act as they steal from the rich and give to the poor, all the while never leaving their show. How do they do it? Who is behind their act? What motivates them? All questions straightlaced, no-nonsense FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) wants to know. Director Louis Leterrier’s track record isn’t a good one – The Incredible Hulk, Transporter 2 and Clash of the Titans (which simultaneously floated and sank Sam Worthington’s career in one swoop). But with prominent appearances from both Morgan Freeman and Sir Michael Caine (who also starred in The Prestige) and sex appeal from Inglourious Basterds’ very talented and under used Mélanie Laurent, Now You See Me shaped up to be an entertaining watch. However, the real sleight of hand here is how filmed tricks and witty one-liners can mask what an average plot underlies beneath. Visually, it is dazzling. With the majority of the two-hour running time dominated by the Four Horseman’s live shows, audience-pleasing

graphics and a brief fight scene, it’s a feast for the eyes. Sadly, it’s not one for the mind. Barely given any one-on-one time with our four talented performers, we only see them on stage, impressing audiences with mind-bending feats of strength and mental agility. It’s frustrating because the first few scenes establish our four “leads” as headstrong individuals: Some with a preexisting history and some with a real chip on their shoulder. We were ready to sit back and watch the fireworks between seeming ex-lovers J Daniel and Henley, or the tension burst when Merritt reads a little too much into Jack’s past. But no such luck and they are held at arms’ length for us to watch from the glittering lights of their stage show. The motivation behind their meeting is revealed to be nothing of the intrigue we are promised and comes off far from believable – which, yes, is ironic because this is a movie about tricks and twists, but still. Instead, it becomes a caper flick and we spend most of our time with Mark Ruffalo, following the Four Horsemen from city to city, always one step behind, and getting increasingly frustrated. I couldn’t help but walk out of the cinema with a smile on my face. Why? As a lover of illusion and not a particularly convincing skeptic, the screen time to the Four Horsemen’s shows was without a doubt the most entertaining aspect. And as someone who always wants to work out the movie before it reaches its conclusion, I was bowled over by the twist. Yeap, there is one almighty twist that gave me shivers. And I realised – I had been duped after all. I had been sucked into the film and held captive to the last moment and the big reveal meant I couldn’t feel dissatisfied about that. JONAH LOMU RUGBY CHALLENGE NOW AVAILABLE ON PC Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge 2, as released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in June, is now available for PC via the digital download service Steam. Priced at US$69.95 (around $89), the title requires a minimum of a 2.2GHz Dual-core intel CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and a GeForce 8800 / Radeon HD 3850. Developed by Wellington-based Sidhe, Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge is also known as All Blacks Rugby Challenge 2, and is the sequel to their 2011 release, All Blacks Rugby Challenge. The first game was generally well received, with critics stating that “there is depth behind its flashy veneer” and “it embraces different playing styles, and rewards learning the skills associated with each.” The sequel, while regarded by most as an improvement, is also generally considered to be less of a step forward than the apparent two-year development timeline might have otherwise suggested.
INTERVIEW: AARON FORSYTHE ON MAGIC: THE GATHERING Aaron Forsythe, the Senior Director of Magic: The Gathering Research & Development, was recently in Australia for the PAX expo in Melbourne. We were lucky enough to catch up with the man behind the many and varied aspects of Magic, and we took the opportunity to quiz him about the franchise. Started in 1993, the collectable card game itself has never been more popular. “Magic is doing incredibly well,” Aaron explained, “even though it is a 20 year old game at this point, it is doing the best it ever has - we have more players now than ever before. Magic in Australia is at highest point ever as well.”
ALL XBOX ONE SYSTEMS CAN BE USED FOR DEVELOPMENT Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten has made a dramatic statement about the upcoming Xbox One’s policies around independent (“indie”) development. In addition to confirming that developers will be able to selfpublish on the console, something that wasn’t possible with the Xbox 360, Whitten also suggested that special “dev kit” devices will not be required either. “Our vision is that every person can be a creator,” Whitten said. “That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE.” Exactly what this translates to is yet to be confirmed; Whitten stated that the company is planning to reveal more information about “the program and the timeline” at Gamescom.
If you’re not familiar with it, the idea is simple enough; each player needs to figure out ways to strategically use the cards in their hand to defeat their opponent. There’s luck involved, too, of course, and modern technology lets you play it on computers, phones, and tablets if the idea of buying lots of physical cards doesn’t appeal. The most recent videogame release - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 - recently landed on consoles, PCs, and Apple devices. While it does allow you to play the full Magic: The Gathering game, you can’t purchase more cards for it; the title eschews the modern “free to play” technique of charging players for additional content by way of in-app purchases. “Duels has been - and will continue to be, for the short term - an on-ramp,” Forsythe explained. “It’s a way to learn the rules, it’s a way to learn the terminology - what the different cards do, how the game functions. Then, ideally, you’re going to wander into a store and join the community there.” Wizards of the Coast maintain a list of stores around the world that support the Magic community, including some 30 locations up and down the length of New Zealand. With a new set of cards based around Greek mythology due in September, and the new Duels of the Planeswalkers game now available, now’s as good a time as any to jump in and try it out. HOLE LOT OF FUN KIWI ROCKERS HEAD LIKE A HOLE MAKE A WELCOME RETURN.
Head Like A Hole are returning with their “foot stomping shit noise [aimed] to make your ears bleed” with a new record, Blood Will Out, for the first time in two years. They’re also on an album support tour playing across the country. Named after the Nine Inch Nails song of the same name, Booga Beazely says he was initially unaware of the names origin, but it quickly drove them all insane. “Our old bassist Andrew Durno named the band. It didn’t occur to me until six months to a year later. I wish we didn’t pick that name, next thing we knew it was played everywhere. On a tour in Europe in ’95 they decided to play that song 10 times in a row before we played.” Nonetheless, the Head Like A Hole legacy was soon built and with 2013 over the half waypoint, Blood Will Out “is a great record”. “It’s a good representation of the band and it took a long time put together,” he says. “We all live in different cities, so were flying up and down the country. Me and Nigel [Regan] would converse a lot and he’d play demos he had and I would write the lyrics.” It’s the first Head Like A Hole record in two years, but Beazely says entering the studio again is like riding bike, some things you just don’t forget. “It’s one of the best feelings you can have, it feels right. I love the panels, the computers, the instruments. I love it when you capture the sound of a band and listen back, it sounds great.” They’ve released the first part of the ‘Monsta’ music video series. Beazely says songs, which were dubbed X, Y, and Z, naturally formed into a concept. “Nigel had titled songs Monsta X, Monsta Y, and Monsta Z…we got the [video] grant for ‘Hardest Battle’, which was Monsta Y.” From there, Beazely, says ‘Monsta X’ was the logical step and they whipped it out for a grand. Naturally the amount of money put into a video the influences the way it looks. Beazely says, “with most grants, you get eight grand and if you can put some money in, you get a $10,000 video.” Only having about a $1000 to spend on the ‘Monsta X’ video didn’t slow Head Like A Hole down, in fact, it kept them closer to what Head Like A Hole is all about. “It isn’t the best video, but I wanted to keep it with Head Like A Hole

style… I said to the ‘Monsta X’ guys ‘this has to be good’ and it came out better than I expected.” The music videos focus around Judas’ betrayal of Jesus and the thirty pieces of silver. Depicting Judas running from his fears and then ultimately hanging himself. Over the course of the decades, the band has paid their touring dues. So I threw Beazely a question, “What’s one tour story you wouldn’t tell your mum?” his response, the story of Head Like A Hole’s arrest. “One story I didn’t tell my mother or father is that we were arrested in a prison car park outside Christchurch, Rolleston prison, for illicit substances.” He says they made a mistake pulling into the car park when everybody that drove in or out was being screened for drugs and weapons. They were caught up in it. “They didn’t believe our story, that we were a band on tour. We’d decided to film some footage outside the prison for a bit of a laugh.” Head Like A Hole then turned the experience around. “At the start of ‘Comfortably Shagged’, there’s a journalist saying that Head Like A Hole had been arrested, my parents saw it on TV and believed it.” Outside of creating mischief with Head Like A Hole, Beazely says he’s a “real sci-fi freak”. And if given the chance, he would love to “jaunt a few thousand years into the future to see if space travel is possible”. “I want to know if other life forms exist and if we’re the only planet with humans on it.” Written By SEBASTIAN MACKAY SEE THEM LIVE: HEAD LIKE A HOLE THU 08 AUG THE KINGS ARMS, AUCKLAND FRI 09 AUG ALTITUDE, HAMILTON SAT 10 AUG BREWERS BAR, MT MAUNGANUI THU 15 AUG BODEGA, WELLINGTON FRI 16 AUG DUX LIVE, CHRISTCHURCH SAT 17 AUG THE ROYAL HOTEL, PALMERSTON NORTH
