In an article recently reported by The UK Times, three duets were recorded between Michael Jackson and Queen’s lead singer, Freddie Mercury. In 1983 the three songs were record at Michael Jackson’s home studio but nothing was ever released due to the singers conflicting schedules.” They were great songs, but the problem was time – as we were both very busy at that period,” Mercury said in an excerpt from Mercury: An Intimate Biography of Freddie Mercury. The three songs ‘There Must Be More to Life Than This’, ‘State of Shock’ and ‘Victory’ were recorded but were not cleared for release until 2011.

The two year wait is over, it’s roll out time for Big Day Out 2014. Three of the headliners are to play full concert sets and all coming together in the spirit of Big Day Out will deliver a unique event. A BDO debut from Seattle’s Pearl Jam who will be officially closing the Kowhai Stage. Arcade Fire are gracing New Zealand for the first time since their ethereal performances at Big Day Out 2008. Arcade Fire will precede Pearl Jam. Blur, who have not seen our shores since 1997. Blur will close out the night at the Big Day Out. Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion, who is also a BDO virgin, is set to perform all of his biggest hits!

Your house is on fire, what do save? My record collection, then my family. Favourite ‘90s TV show? I was quite a fan of all those nature documentaries that Sir David Attenborough made. Dream job as a kid? I wanted to work as a musician, playing music on stage. First album? Greatest Hits by The Beatles on cassette, 1975. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? I would work in a record store that sells second-hand vinyls. My job would consist of buying and selling, and also travelling to various record conventions to buy and sell. By the way, that is my other job. Ultimate festival line-up? Blue Oyster Cult, The Damned, Killing Joke, The Cure and The Residents. How do you discover new music? Normally through reading fanzines and researching through publications such as Mojo. Worst job you’ve had? Lucky for me I have only ever worked as a musician since high school. I got a job as a sales clerk in a record store in 1990 part-time for extra cash, then a full-time job in 1994 when Hard-ons broke up (we reformed six years later). I never really had bad jobs. Which song do you wish you wrote? ‘Black metal’ by Venom.

First gig in attendance? My father took my brother and I in 1975 (I think) to see a free outdoor concert at a cycling arena in my neighbourhood. AC/DC were playing. They were too loud so we left after a few songs. We drove a kilometre up the road to McDonald’s for a few burgers instead. At the McDonald’s we could still hear AC/DC.

The 10-piece Californian collective of indie-folk, psychedelic, roots, and gospel exploration is a far-flung step, audibly, from front man Alex Ebert’s well publicised stint with Beck’s band in Ima Robot. Where the two worlds, one hippie and one electronic postpunk, collide is in Ebert’s fortuitous ability to generate promise. Ima Robot was an exciting experiment and in the same vein ESATMZ is too. RAMONES essentials, the Ramones also offered a twisted and humorous take on the popular culture of their time. Whether it’s the trash talk of ‘I Don’t Wanna Go Down to the Basement’, the gleeful violence of ‘Beat on the Brat’, or the maniacal stupidity of ‘Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue’. And the cover of Chris Montez’s ‘Let’s Dance’ wasn’t a throwaway either. With its singleminded beat and lyrics the track encapsulated everything the group loved about pre-Beatles rock ‘n’ roll.

6.30PM, $10, UTR.CO.NZ

LAUREL HALO

A seesawing dilemma indeed. ESATMZ is an incredibly restrained effort given their potential for chaos; the production feels attentive and respectful. The album while full of highlights like ‘Life Is Hard’ consistently feels as if something is trying to break out. At times it soars and that elusive promise feels restored.

OUT NOW

The Ramones released their debut album, Ramones, in April 1976; 14 rock ‘n’ roll songs exploding like time bombs in the just 29 breathless minutes. Produced by Sire’s Craig Leon on an extremely low budget, the debut LP was greeted by rock critics with glowing reviews. Despite Sire’s high hopes for it, Ramones was not a commercial success. However, this album and the band itself were a major influence on the punk rock movement. The songs on their first album were imaginative renditions of early rock ‘n’ roll, with some surf rock thrown in, and even a bit of girl-group pop. Not only was it music stripped back to its

Ramones is an extremely important historical document, and many now claim the Ramones were the first true punk rock band. While there may be some debate over this, there’s absolutely no doubt the rockers helped shape the musical ideals of the genre. With four chords, catchy melodies, irresistibly inane lyrics and by speeding up the tempo, the Ramones created music that was rooted in the early ‘60s but sounded revolutionary. They turned rock conventions inside out and celebrated pop culture and stylized stupidity – and not just via the punk aesthetic, but in every nuance of the music itself. WRITTEN BY REN KIRK

Central to Tony Lane’s work is the tactile nature of painting. Where we are immersed with digital images, Lane’s work sits at the other end of the spectrum. They are fixed, tangible objects, offering the visual in a manner you can grasp. The scale and form are closely related to contemporary painting, but the treatment is similar to early Gothic and Renaissance works.

If the first seasons just weren’t enough, don’t fret! The second seasons are right behind. JONES! continues on three journeys, with The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, and The Incredible Hulk. Will good overcome evil as the battles with Nazis, uncontrollable rage, and even the odd Sasquatch continue?

directed by Nicolas Winding Refn Starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm

Eliciting boos at Cannes before winning top honours at the Sydney Film Fest, Only God Forgives is proving even more polarising than the last Nicolas Winding Refn/Ryan Gosling collaboration, Drive. Ostensibly a crime narrative, tonally it’s more of a surreal horror. Gosling plays Julian, a drug dealer who operates out of a boxing club with his brother Billy. When Billy kills a prostitute, he is quickly murdered by her grieving father and Julian takes revenge. Those that took issue with Gosling’s reticence in Drive will be exasperated again, as Julian shares a hushed demeanour with The Driver. But beyond that he’s a completely different ball of wax. Underneath a surface layer of cool he’s an impotent mummy’s boy, who challenges an opponent with “Wanna fight?” as if they’re in a schoolyard. Subverting Gosling’s star persona like this is just part of why the film is potentially alienating. Only God Forgives is also incredibly violent, with the punishment doled

out by police chief Chang, resulting in some truly brutal sequences. Vithaya Pansringarm’s portrayal of Chang is a highlight, a man as serene while singing karaoke as he is wielding a blade. The other major role sees Kristin Scott Thomas as Julian’s foulmouthed matriarch. Scott Thomas relishes the chance to play against type, disappearing into her brash performance. Like Drive, the plot is very straightforward, but it’s garnished with so many details to enjoy. It looks incredible, for one thing, awash with garish colours. Refn’s attention to composition is impeccable, and there is always plenty to soak in from the frame. It’s willfully weird, and I can see how the carnage and dream logic might turn some people off, but I loved Only God Forgives. If you have time for movies that play by their own set of rules, you might too. WRITTEN BY TONY STAMP, FLICKS.CO.NZ

WINE CELLAR ST KEVIN’S ARCADE

It’s bohemian with a grungy, student tinge, and the Wine Cellar feels more like an underground bar in overseas than in the heart of Auckland. Forget swanky pads and high-end hangouts, this place is vintage and retro and it’s awesome. Comfy, cosy and great company, what more could you ask for?

SPRIG & FERN 342 TINAKORI RD

The Sprig & Fern is simply the best place to relax, have fun and drink superbly good, naturally brewed, craft beer, ale or cider. The tavern has 19 taps with a wide range of craft beers from Blonde to Porter and also seasonal brews and ciders.

PEQUEÑO

Pequeño is a warm and comfortable lounge bar with leather chairs and couches situated in the basement of the historic Savoy building. With their knowledgeable and friendly staff, serving a variety of local and international wines, spirits, cocktails, single malt whiskeys and a selection of Cuban cigars, Pequeño offers an atmospheric alternative for those seeking refuge from the city bars. The bar features an open fire with authentic brick interior, and an outdoor smoking area. Pequeño first opened its doors in March 2002. With its decor mainly sourced in Spain, it gave Dunedin its first “European style… hard to find… upmarket bar.”

ANIKA MOA

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background as a musician. My passion is music, but mostly the art of songwriting and writing that perfect song which I aim to do every time I put pen to paper. I have been in the “music industry” for about a hundred years, but I’m only 33! I am writing my fifth album very slowly and balancing life as a mother and a touring artist. It’s an extremely rich and fulfilling life with lots of ups and downs and I really love what I do. How would you describe FMP to someone that hadn’t heard about it? FMP is a collection of various artists being together and creating a new sound. It has all the flair and promise of watching something really beautiful unfold around you. It’s pretty awesome to be a part of. Are you excited about joining Fly My Pretties? Is it your first time? I am happy to be touring with some really lovely, down-to-earth people. It is my first time. What do you think you will bring to FMP this year? I can bring my harmonies and sense of humour to the gang! Also, my sexiness and smoking eyes. How does it feel to go on such an extensive tour across the country? I tour all the time so it’s like being back with a great friend. I love Aotearoa and meeting new and exciting crazies from all over. My favourite places to go are Central Otago and up north. Beaches and snow. What are you looking forward on this tour? I’m looking forward to getting good sleeps and eating lots. I am a simple man. Have you worked with any of the cast members before? If so in what capacity? I have toured with both Barnaby and Mel Parsons on my solo tours that I do annually. The others I haven’t met or sung with... until now! I love meeting new musicians and hearing what they can give to new music. It’s a breath of fresh air.

BARNABY WEIR

How did the concept come about? Why did you call it FMP? I wanted to do a musical showcase in a more theatrical way, so I asked some of my friends from different bands if they’d be interested. I had a bunch of songs that weren’t for the Black Seeds and needed an outlet. That’s how it began and when I propsed this to Mikee from Loop he agreed it would be fun and we went from there. The name comes from The Wizard Of Oz when the Wicked Witch of the East says (not exactly), “Fly my pretties, fly” when she releases her flying monkeys to go get Dorothy. This is the fifth FMP tour, what inspires you to keep doing them? I think working with new people inspires me. Trying to think outside the square also inspires me. And for me, the challenge of it all is really inspiring too. It’s a great way to explore different musical styles too and I love recording and mixing the live show too. How do you choose the cast? I just go to a lot of shows and meet people along the way, and then think about the cast like a list of ingredients for a magic meal! We want variety, but also need that special stock that makes it rich and tasty. Every year there has been incredible visuals to accompany the live show, what can we expect this year? This time round we are going to evolve the visual componant to the show, using a blend of heritage footage and tales from each town we visit. We are still developing this, but no doubt we will create a spectacular backdrop and set design for the show. Not only the ringmaster of FMP, you are also the lead singer of acclaimed band The Black Seeds AND you have a solo career. How do you juggle your musical triplets? It’s easier than it sounds really. I guess you just have to be really organised, which my mangagers help with and then stick to the plan and keep writing music for each project. It’s a real pleasure and honour to work with these different groups and it’s refreshing to mix up the styles I play and release.

KARA GORDON

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background as a musician. I have been playing guitar since I was six years old, played 150 gigs a year since about 13 (from pubs clubs to stadiums and festivals). Studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, played with/or supported a lot of my musical heroes such as Slash, Joe Satriani, Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple and many top international/ national acts. I just recently caught up with Alabama3 and did a full blues album in London, as well as tour in Switzerland (Zurich, Montreux and across Switzerland). How would you describe FMP to someone that hadn’t heard about it? I’d describe FMP as a collaboration of top musicians playing blues, roots, funky music – all the while having a great time, entertaining and experimenting, and pushing music to a different level. Are you excited about joining Fly My Pretties? Is it your first time? Totally excited. This is my first time, but I’ve been following FMP as a few of my mates have the record. It’s a real honour to be on board. Provide one sentence about why you are excited to visit each town. Whangarei – Love Whangarei. Played here too. There’s a cool pizza place up there – Pizza Belgrade. Dargaville – I don’t know what to expect there, but a couple of my mates from the area. Keen to check it out. Hamilton – Good ol’ Tron. My cuz lives down there and I have played there a bit. Wellington – I love Wellington. Had some great times there where I first met Barnaby. Nelson – Last time I was here was ages ago, since I was opening for a Rolling Stone tribute band from Holland. Christchurch – Love Christchurch, played a wicked gig in Lyttelton. Also doing a couple of dates there August before FMP tour. Dunedin – Love it there, opened for Sir Elton John! Has great student community. Played with some cool musos there too at the Octagon.

MEL PARSONS

How would you describe FMP to someone that hadn’t heard about it? Fly My Pretties is a travelling collaborative musical extravaganza! Established songwriters and the cream of New Zealand’s multi-instrumentalists come together to put on a top-notch show. Are you excited about joining Fly My Pretties? Is it your first time? Yeah I’m excited, it’s going to be a blast. This is the first time I’ve been involved with Fly My Pretties, and I’m really looking forward to the collaborative aspect of shows. What do you think you will bring to FMP this year? Hopefully some good songs and a bit of fun to the road... How does it feel to go on such an extensive tour across the country? I tour quite a lot in New Zealand, but it never gets old! There are some new places for me on the itinerary. I’ve never played in Kaitaia, so that’ll be fun. What are you looking forward on this tour? The shows, the people, the places... everything really! I love touring as it’s such a great way to connect with audiences. I find especially when we travel to the smaller towns and places outside of the main centres audiences are so appreciative as they are often missed off tour itineraries. Have you worked with any of the cast members before? If so in what capacity? I’ve toured with Anika before and we’ve worked together on various projects. She sang harmonies on my last album, I covered one of her tracks for her covers album, and I supported her 2010 NZ Solo Tour. Lastly, what is something interesting fans might not know about you? Fans can find out most things about me by listening to my songs... bit of an open book really.

LOUIS MCDONALD

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background as a musician. Being 18 years old, I still have a relatively short history as a musician. Apart from playing instruments since I was about 10, I never took music seriously until I started listening to musicians like Conor O’Brien and Bob Dylan, and began writing songs. Eventually I started writing with a few people which then became my closest friends, and we called ourselves Five Mile Town, and that’s where I am now! Of course a lot has happened between two years ago and now. The band and the career has grown, we’ve even relocated. But my history as a musician is still very much in the present. How would you describe FMP to someone that hadn’t heard about it? I was honestly unsure myself to begin with! But Fly My Pretties is a collaboration of some of New Zealand’s best musicians, ranging from the up-and-coming to the current and the classic. We tour around the country and release a live album. How did the opportunity come about? I heard through my band’s manager that I may have been shortlisted to be a cast member of Fly My Pretties, and it wasn’t too long until I was asked to be a part of the cast. My band Five Mile Town have a great relationship with Mikee Tucker from Loop, him having booked us on some awesome shows. So I guess the right people knew who I was and how to get a hold of me. How does it feel to go on such an extensive tour across the country? The tour lined up for Fly My Pretties is definitely huge, considering I haven’t toured for much more than four to five dates in one go. I’m really quite curious about what kind of toll a month on the road will take on me. But I’m incredibly excited to say the least, I really don’t know what to expect. What are you looking forward on this tour? I’m honestly really excited to see New Zealand more. This tour will take us from the top of the country right down to the bottom, through pretty much every major town.

JANELLE KLEINHANS MATCHETT Addicted to Hard House What was the premise behind starting the London Hard House Reunion in 2011? Well, where do I start! LHHR was a dream of mine for a very long time. I left South Africa for London when I was only 20 and spent some of the best years of my life there. Clubbing was a huge part of my experience and I met some amazing people from all over the world, most of whom I’m still in touch with today. I fell in love with my other half during those three years and moved to New Zealand with him where I constantly pined for those precious times and family in the UK. The Solid Sunday Nutter page on Facebook reunited me with fellow Hard House lovers from that era and it was a passing comment that got it all started. I posted that I wished we could have a reunion and all see each other again, even if it was just the once. My good friend, Steve Ryan, a former resident DJ at Solid Sunday, saw my post and asked if I was serious, and of course I was. Just being a clubber myself I had no idea how to pull something like this together, but with Steve’s motivation we decided to put it out there and see what reaction we get back, never thinking it would be such a popular idea. My vision was to recreate a night out clubbing in London, yet in Auckland as to catch up with old friends, reminiscing about the old days and all dancing under the same roof one more time. I started the London Reunion page on Facebook and told everyone we needed a 1000 likes from definite attendees to get the gig up and running... we managed to get 1500+ likes from all over Australia & New Zealand… and so the London Hard House Reunion was born!

Who are the crew behind the LHHR? I created my company Audio Addiction Ltd when the idea took off and my wonderful husband became my No. 1 supporter and right hand man. Over time the crew expanded to a few key members who helped take the event to the level it is today! Eamonn Fevah from Fevah fame got involved really early on, offering advice and guidance. He also introduced me to international hard dance superstar DJ and owner of Masif Records Steve Hill, who is now my business partner and mentor. Mandy Suess from Fevah FM was my rock from the get go and with her experience and inside knowledge, she’s helped me promote and engage with the social media audience on many levels. It has been a team effort. I had the dream but they all helped realise it! Favourite LHHR moment so far? Oh, that’s a hard one. I have so many! I think the biggest moment for me was walking outside Studio at the start of the night in 2011, the doors hadn’t even opened yet and the queue was like four people deep & all the way down the road. The crowd was filled with happy, smiling people – just how I remember it from my London days. That moment took my breath away and I felt an overwhelming feeling of pride for what we had accomplished. I’ll treasure that always. 10 Essential London Hard House Reunion Classics: BK & ANDY FARLEY - ‘KHEMIKAL IMBALANCE’ (2001) DEAN PETERS & THE EDISON FACTOR - ‘THE BEGINNING (BK REMIX)’ (2001) DIRT DEVILS - ‘THE DRILL’ (2000) HYPERLOGIC - ‘ONLY ME (STIMULANT DJS REMIX)’ (2000) PARKER & CLIND - ‘GENERATOR’ (1999) PHLASH! BIG DAY OUT 2014 In what is set to be one of the biggest gambles in New Zealand festival history the Big Day Out are returning in 2014 after missing 2013 all together, but is the electronic line up big enough to get the devoted dance fans back in favour? Let’s break down the headliners that are more beat makers than bands. STEVE ANGELLO One part of the Swedish House Mafia, Angello was already dominating the world over long before the trio proclaimed ‘Who’s going to save the world tonight.’ His blend of big room feel good house will have the Lakeside Stage bubbling. The question yet to be answered is will he be bringing his pre-programmed finale with pyrotechnics display? MAJOR LAZER Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire aka Major Lazer are the dancehall version of the Beastie Boys. ‘Pon De Floor’ set them up commercially with Beyonce taking the beat to new markets. Their recent live sets have featured appearances from Snoop Dogg (also on the BDO line up) but good news ladies, there hasn’t been a show yet where Diplo keeps his shirt on.

TEKNIK South Island born and breed Drum & Bass supremo Teknik has been quietly churning away quality tunes since he emerged with his first remix in 2002. Since then he’s shared the studio with the New Zealand elite of the sound including The Upbeats, Bulletproof, Dose, Cern and Trei releasing countless predominantly dark edgy rollers for front running labels such as Renegade Hardware, Commercial Suicide, Citrus and local favourite Cyanide. In 2013 Teknik has been focused on selected gigs up and down Aotearoa. ESSENTIAL LISTENING THE UPBEATS FEATURING TEKNIK ‘POISON’ (SINGLE – 2007) CERN, DOSE & TEKNIK ‘HUNTSVILLE’ (SINGLE – 2011) BULLETPROOF, DOSE & TEKNIK ‘THAW’ (SINGLE – 2011) SEE HIM DJ: BASS CLINIC: 100% NZ MUSIC PRODUCERS SAT 17 AUG DUX LIVE, CHRISTCHURCH

FLOSSTRADAMUS Trap music gods Flosstradamus have had a huge year taking elements of Hardstyle, Hip Hop, Moombahton and infusing them into what I describe as the electronic equivalent of teen angst. Expect an unusually high turnout of flat peaks for this set. DILLON FRANCIS Forget about his outstanding musical talents. Simply head to his social media sites to view his solid collection of pisstake videos on Deep House, his collection of animal photoshops and his video remake of that famous pottery scene from the movie Ghost with producer 12th Planet. Steve Lind aka Spenda C is an influential figure in the current Australian bass music scene. Maybe it’s his knack for producing several styles of music under aliases such as The Mane Thing, The Hump Day Project and of course his most successful moniker to date Spenda C. Hailed by many as the leader of Trap music in Australia his productions dominate the largest dance music digital portals like beatport.com finding favour commonly in the Hip Hop and Dubstep charts. His label resume reads like the bible of bass music down under with his musical magic being picked up by the labels Klub Kids, Ministry Of Sound, Xelon and Central Station. The proof of your production merit is in who plays it and with visionaries like Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz, Diplo and Craze it’s fair to say he’s reaching A list status each and every time. PETITION TO ADD SUBTITLE LISTING TO STEAM An English gamer calling herself “Krissy B” has launched an online petition in an attempt to convince the PC digital distribution service Steam to add information on their store listings as to whether or not a game supports subtitles. “There [have] been several games on Steam I have purchased that do not have subtitles and are [therefore] unplayable for me,” Krissy explained. “I don’t think in this day and age that I’m asking much to know if I can play a game or not.” The usefulness of the information, Krissy suggest, will extend beyond the hearing impaired. “It would not only be people with a hearing loss that benefit from this feature,” she continued, “but [also] those who speak other languages or struggle with peoples [sic] accents in games.”

PREVIEW: KILLZONE MERCENARY Killzone Mercenary is a brand new installment in the long running PlayStation exclusive first person shooter series, crafted this time around for Sony’s struggling PlayStation Vita handheld. When I played the game at E3, I was impressed; After playing through the latest demo, I’m blown away. The gist of Mercenary is pretty simple; Set after the events that transpired during the first Killzone, the story revisits many key plot points raised in the main trilogy albeit from an all-new perspective. In Mercenary, you play as a gun for hire; Your services are alternately acquired by both sides in the conflict (the ISA and the Helghast) the goal is to make money, not friends.

DIGITAL NATIONZ ANNOUNCED A new expo based on “digital entertainment” has been announced, planned for Auckland’s Vector Arena in September. Called Digital Nationz, the two-day event will provide “the first public opportunity for Kiwis to experience the next generation of consoles,” according to the press release. “[Microsoft and Sony] will each have large stands at the event, not only showing off their latest consoles loaded with the newest titles for gamers to try, but also upcoming titles for PS3, PS VITA and XBOX 360” the announcement states. Other planned events include a History of Video Games Museum, a “Digital Artz” gallery and “sneak peeks into cutting edge technologies such as 3D printers, The Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset, and other exciting innovations.” Pricing for the event starts at $14, with weekend passes and VIP tickets also available. Digital Nationz runs over the weekend of 28-29 September.

The mission in the demo is multifaceted; You first have to assault a base, flip some switches, and then get out alive. There’s a bunch of neat twists in there, but to avoid spoiling the story, I’ll omit the details. The point is, it’s all nicely presented (with both in-game and movie-type cinematics setting the scene), and provides enough context to keep the adrenaline flowing without being particularly original. It’s good. What’s great about the game is the sheer number of options at the player’s disposal. I died a bunch of times, and played through it a bunch of times, too, which gave me ample opportunity to explore and experiment. From the typical run ‘n’ gun approach to full stealth, everything’s possible; You can sneak around, look for a higher path, plan your kills strategically to minimize risk, or just buy the biggest gun and make with the explosions. The addition of a minimap that shows not only the location of the enemies but also their alert status and facing direction might sound like a cheat, but instead it opens up the gameplay and affords you many more possibilities than you’d have without it. If you’ve still got a Vita, then (and you should, it really is a great device and you can get ‘em pretty cheap if you look around), and you like the idea of playing a console quality FPS wherever you happen to be, you absolutely must keep an eye out for Killzone Mercenary. It’s out mid September. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

In the four years since their debut album To Lose My Life… smashed through the charts on the back of anthemic singles ‘Unfinished Business’ and ‘Death’, London rockers White Lies have been happily embracing the resurgence of post-punk inspired indie-pop which has seen them follow in the footsteps of bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Interpol and Arcade Fire to become ubiquitous across the global airwaves. The band’s debut album shot to number one in the UK and has been followed by a frenzied period of high profile support slots (including tours with Kings of Leon & Coldplay) as well as touting their wares at every major festival on the planet. Big TV is the band’s third album, following on from 2011’s Ritual and continues the band’s frenetic forays into the realms of dark, detached yet undeniably uplifting indie rock. As with their previous two albums, the tracks here are powered by the warm strains of vocalist Harry McVeigh’s commanding baritone. The lead singer’s deep, nuanced, almost melancholy vocal style has led to endless comparisons to 80’s icons Ian Curtis and David Bowie, and from the sound of the twelve tunes included here it looks pretty certain these comparisons will long continue. The album was recorded in Brussels with producer Ed Buller and features a sound, which sees the band enthusiastically embrace their 80’s influences while still retaining the unmistakably familiar White Lies sound of previous outings. Textured synths and pulsating loops confidently intertwine with buoyant melodies, giving the album an epic and almost nostalgic feel. It’s clear from the outset that the sound has expanded, with the title track wasting no time escalating into its manic, thumping refrain. Driven by chorus-drenched guitar riffs and meandering Killers-esque synths, McVeigh laments the trials and tribulations of modern urban living: “True it’s a beautiful view, but you know they’re gonna set it on fire when they feel like something new”. The first single from the album, ‘There Goes Our Love Again’ epitomises the band’s irrepressible ability to seamlessly blend lightness and dark. Beginning as a slow burning, aching dedication to lost love, with

McVeigh pleading desperately “Cocoon my heart, and carry me to love again”, the song builds masterfully and breaks into one of White Lies’ most anthemic and upliftingly catchy choruses to date. The band lets their 80’s sensibilities run wild on the raucous ‘Getting Even’, a stirring lament which is driven by a myriad of arpeggiated synths, punchy beats and some gloriously dirty guitar riffs. McVeigh wonders doubtfully whether ‘I can forgive and we can forget, even after all this Love and other nonsense’. Let’s hope so. Things slow down for ballad ‘Change’, another tale of lost love and heartbreak which builds gradually, supported by subtle orchestral strings, skillfully capturing the aching pain of moving on, with McVeigh admitting somewhat courageously ‘I’m gonna miss the way I kissed you - but I’ll be brave if you’ll be brave’. Final standout track is effervescent dance floor groove ‘Goldmine’, an upbeat final track that features a healthy abundance of sprawling synths and crunchy guitar licks. White Lies have always injected a certain maturity into their songwriting and the tradition continues on Big TV, with the thoughtful, contemplative lyrics affording a welcomed depth and almost cathartic feel to the album as a whole. It also features a number of cleverly placed interludes, which allow for some mellow downtime between certain tracks and work well to pace the album. Overall, a strong album which will keep White Lies fans happy, while allowing the band’s sound to naturally expand and evolve. The songs may be more ambitious and the 80’s are in full effect, but the charm, swagger and hooks, which allowed the band to conquer the globe four years ago, are all intact.
