FOREIGN FADERS SNAPDRAGON

9PM

Foreign Faders specialise in nearly every genre you could think of (maybe minus hardcore, mesh-vest wearing trance and sweet-as pop). Soul, reggae, jazz R&B, hip-hop, old-school classics, all served up on a platter of turntable trickery.

It’s like they never went away. There was a time when Pete Doherty was the bastard godchild of every tabloid in Blighty. As the perfect drug addled poster boy for good ol’ fashioned ‘yoof’ degradation, he pretty much kept News Of The World in the black for the better part of three years. But now, in the modern age of twitteratic rock pathos, it’s virtually impossible to shock and gloat about fame and infamy. Plus Murdoch’s filthy rag has shut down. Sleaze press exposure can no longer save a band. So what’s left is a ditching of the grubby media antics and a return to making decent music. Early ‘Shambles releases were all about the form over function and lacked substance. But this time there are glimpses of a more sober, more mature approach to rock n roll! ‘Fireman’ does its best Clash impersonation, whilst ‘New Pair’ is a remarkably good lil’ epic slow burner. Of course listening to ‘Nothing Comes to Nothing,’ it’s clear beyond a doubt Babyshambles have hoovered up all of 80’s Dunedin. This might be the most perfect pop song that Dave Kilgour never wrote. Carrying of the pilfering theme, we find Lily Allen robbed of her ironic hoedown ‘It’s Not Fair’ and sold back to us as the ‘Shambles’ ‘Fall From Grace’. Disturbingly the song is oddly refreshing but also annoyingly catchy in a boot-scoot kinda way. More Clash moments in the Brit pop ballads ‘Maybelline’ and Damon Albarn too will be banging the door down for his share of the royalties

on this one. The biggest surprise is the title track, which includes an infectious ‘30’s Juke Joint Jive and scratched 60 samples from early demos. The musicianship has glimmers of professionalism, especially some gnarly Waits style keyboards, retains just enough of a threat of selfimplosion to keep us on the edge of the dance floor. Another surprise comes in the Jamaican dub groove of ‘Dr. No’, which is a serious consideration for my next Christmas party mix tape. Hints at the ironic miserable genius of Morrissey/ Marr rear up in ‘Picture Me in the Hospital’ as the perfect offset to the cheerful early numbers. Despite the obvious kleptomania the deeper you get in to this album, the better the cuts - the reward for perseverance. It’s only been five years since the Babyshambles and the Libertines ruled the music tabloids. But if they spent more time making albums like this and less time creating headlines they could’ve really been contenders. Oh well, late start’s better than nothing. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

JOBS GENERAL RELEASE

No doubt you use your iPhone, iPad, iMac, iWhatever on a regular basis. Now, see the personal story behind the visionary creator of Apple – Steve Jobs. Ashton Kutcher transforms from comedic rouge into an actor vying for an Oscar in an emotive portrayal of one man’s struggle to change technology. directed by JEFF WADLOW

VICIOUS - S1

Starring AARON TAYLOR-JOHNSON, CHLOË GRACE MORETZ, CHRISTOPHER MINTZ-PLASSE

TV ONE, 9.05PM

Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi head a stellar cast in this wicked new comedy. Vicious tells the story of ageing partners Freddie (McKellen) and Stuart (Jacobi), two men who have lived together for nearly 50 years. When they met, their careers were at a high, but now their lives consist of reading books and bickering.

SAT 31 AUG THE WIRE – S5 SOHO, FROM 12.30PM

Created by David Simon (The Corner, Treme), the final season of The Wire expands its focus into the media – specifically the role of newspapers in the twisted bureaucracy of big cities while still including vagaries of crime, law enforcement and politics in Baltimore. It’s everyone’s favourite nail-biter.

It’s somewhat surprising that many of the fight scenes in Kick-Ass 2 aren’t all that memorable, given they were the only thing worth remembering in Jeff Wadlow’s Never Back Down. The highway sequence in particular is a victim of bad postproduction. Still, the sequel’s new director admirably keeps the manic mix of R-rated comedy and action seen in Matthew Vaughn’s original while omitting the terrible attempts at shock-drama that polluted Mark Millar’s comic – the ultra-violence is already full-on without the need of animal decapitation, child slaughter and gang rape. While the crime-fighting craze has spread to other wannabe vigilantes, Mindy hangs up her Hit-Girl suit to give ‘regular’ teen life a go. The parallel between the boy-band obsessions of dolled-up teenage

girls and the fanboy superhero adorations of costumed geeks is a surprisingly novel illustration of otherwise typical high-school identity themes. However, the huge focus on Hit-Girl comes at the expense of Kick-Ass himself, who’s little more than a narrator in the film – it makes a particularly heavy tragedy in the third act feel lighter than it should. Side-characters are also denied their times to shine, with Jim Carrey’s scene-stealing Colonel Stars and Stripes leaving the stage long before we want him to. Fortunately, Christopher Mintz-Plasse transcends as villainous douchebag The Motherf–ker – he’s like an angry Internet troll who actually goes through with his threats. TRIO CAFÉ 5 MELLING RD

Moderately priced, freshly-made home baking and rich, Fair Trade organic coffee – a trip to Lower Hutt wouldn’t be complete without a stop to Trio. Lunch, brunch and all-day breakfast, this cosy little café receives rave reviews for its hospitality.

JESS’ UNDERGROUND KITCHEN

“I just love feeding people.” That’s the message behind Jess’ Underground Kitchen. It began in her dining room: After cooking dinner for a couple of friends, one joked that she’d love to pay Jess Daniels to cook her meals during the week. A week later, Jess had put together her first menu. Each week Jess uploads a new menu, showing what will be cooking Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. You can also order soups for the week, and any number of frozen meals from her freezer. Place your order before 10am and pick up between 5-7pm on your way home from work. Dinner = sorted.

IMPERIAL LANE 7 FORT ST

Inspired by New York and Melbourne before it – by day, Imperial Lane is home to new European patisserie and bakery Elske, with Danish-inspired European bakery and patisserie goods from Michelinstarred pastry chef Kristina Jensen served alongside some seriously good coffee.

BACCHUA WINE BAR LEVEL 1/12 THE OCTAGON

Set in the heart of Dunedin, Bacchus has been offering quality, imaginative and contemporary fare with traditional flavours for over 20 years and has built a reputation for an extensive selection of New Zealand and imported wines.

MOTEL BAR

For any one that appreciates great cocktails late at night, there is Motel Bar. An intimate venue where old technology has been brought through into the new millennium, the 1950’s-style ambiance is lures you in and fills your soul. Here, they play vinyl more often than not, provide cigars for those of that persuasion, and field one of the largest spirit selections in town. And it is where you are encouraged to ask questions about what we serve and why, with a background low hum of music and conversation. The mood is refined and dry, with shades of the grande dame hotels of yesterday.

INCHING FORWARD Dave Grohl’s Sound City aired recently. It’s a tribute dingy-dive to the LA studio that made every great record from Rumours to Nevermind. On film both owners and engineers were quick to blame the studio’s demise on the coming of ProTools, laptops and home studios. Yet, in the same breath, they praised Reznor for using the very same weapons of their own mass destruction to create beautiful, if not darkly disturbing music during his time in their establishment. Far away from Sound City’s 70’s decadence and stained shag pile queasiness, Reznor’s latest digs, The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, were swarming with cops and SWAT Choppers on standby for expected riots following the Trayvon Martin verdict. Deep underground, Reznor set up candles to mask the smell of sewage and to create a 3PM Cigar Lounge ambience in his cavenous lair. For weeks this secretive subterranean base has been home for his latest project, the recently reformed NIN. He was there to compile two live shows - one for the upcoming US arena circuit in September and another for the summer festival route - the first since their break up following the 2009’s Wave Goodbye tour. That was a practical move to make room to work on The Social Network soundtrack, start a family, and set up a new band, How to Destroy Angels, which includes his new wife Mariqueen Maandig. For the last two decades Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails have forced brutal – yet seditious, melodic – techno-tronic hardcore rock down the throat of Corporate America. Starting with Pretty Hate Machine, and its primal screamer ‘Head Like a Hole,’ Reznor’s drove innovation and creativity like a burning bus through a brick wall. He discovered, nurtured and then dismissed Marilyn Manson. Then, in 1994 he all but committed suicide on the noir-rock album The Downward Spiral, appropriately recorded in the house where Sharon Tate was murdered. And then went on to survive a heroin overdose in 2000. But today he’s older and calmer. He’s still the respected elder statesman for the menacing end of alternative culture and the first person film director David Fincher [The Social Network] calls to score his movie. He’s also the bud Josh Homme dialed when he needed advice on how to bounce back from a near-death experience. Now he’s droppin’ the 8th NIN’ album Hesitation Marks – their first since The Slip in 2008.

At 48 Reznor’s a more affable prospect than his intense and difficult reputation suggests. He fronts the media with a sort of ironic optimism. “Downward Spiral felt like I had an unending bottomless pit of rage and self-loathing inside me,” he told The Guardian, recently, “and I had to somehow challenge something or I’d explode.” And referring to Hesitation Marks, he noted, “This record was written as the other side of that journey (out from hate and self loathing).” The despair, loneliness, rage and isolation still exist but is more contained. Clearly he’s in a better place to express it “and that rage is quieter.” As the world spirals downward Reznor’s ascends in a spectacular reversal. During a tour with How to Destroy Angels, he remembered he was supposed to deliver the record company a contractual greatest hits package. So in 2012, keen to honor the debt, he wrote two new numbers for the collection; ‘Satellite’ and ‘Everything’. The experience felt fresh and unburdened so he carried on, writing a whole new body of work. A new solitary writing approach, using a drum machine as the backbone of every track, hammered home the new Nails sound. Whilst the composition of Hesitation Marks went smoothly, the band’s production did not, claiming early recruits King Crimson’s Adrian Belew and Eric Avery (Jane’s Addiction) who came and went again due to the sheer intensity of the process. Finally, the product emerged, like an industrial variant of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, twitching with glitchy electronica and smelling like early 80’s doomed House music. There was clearly a layer of maturity settling. For instance the David Lynch directed first single ‘Came Back Haunted’, whilst epilepsy inducing is a mainstream walk in the club compared to snarling earlier promos. Even a fan’s tribute to the very indie strum-along ‘Everything’ even has Reznor riding an animated, candy colored unicorn. All testament to his new status as a humored stable, sober father to two young boys and the ultimate proof to every parent that their maladjusted child will come right in the end. Maybe. PLAYSTATION 4 NZ RELEASE DATE The PlayStation 4 will be released in New Zealand on Fri 29 Nov. As detailed on the official NZ PlayStation website, “PlayStation gave gamers what they wanted at gamescom 2013 by announcing when PS4 will be hitting stores along with a lower price for both PS3 and PS Vita. PS4 will be out in New Zealand from 29 November 2013.” Sony are trumpteting the PlayStation 4 as the best place to play, with “dynamic, connected gaming, powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, plus innovative second-screen features. Combining unparalleled content, immersive gaming experiences, all of your favourite digital entertainment apps and PlayStation exclusives, the PS4 system focuses on the gamer.” The PlayStation 4 will go on sale at a recommended retail price of $649.00.

TITANFALL HANDS ON XBOX 360, XBOX ONE & PC Heavily rumoured before its reveal at E3 earlier this year, Titanfall still captured the hearts and minds of any that saw it, with EA’s new shooter going on to win many “best of E3” game critic’s awards - and for good reason. Its combination of fast paced, run up walls and shoot with mechs action looked like just the ticket for those (like me) who are looking for something new in their FPS rotation. At Gamescom I was one of the first in the world to find out that it’s not just clever video editing and obviously staged / choreographed sequences (you’re not fooling anyone, guys.) It turns out, you see, that running up walls and stomping on dudes with massive robots is as fun as it sounds.

PS3 TO PS4 UPGRADE FOR CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS CONFIRMED Activision has announced Call of Duty: Ghosts’ participation in Sony’s PS3 to PS4 upgrade program. The upgrade program is completely optional and allows consumers who purchase Call of Duty: Ghosts on PlayStation 3 to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version of the game for a limited time at a suggested retail price of only $10 NZD. “Today we’re announcing that anyone who buys Call of Duty: Ghosts for the PS3 will be able to upgrade to Call of Duty: Ghosts for the PS4 for a limited time at a suggested retail price of just 10 dollars, 10 euros or 10 pounds,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. Call of Duty: Ghosts will release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U on Tue 05 Nov. The title will also release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November.

The level I played was one of those that includes some level of narrative elements (the bit at the beginning, basically - only some of the levels have this sort of stuff, the rest are more traditional in structure.) They’re Titanfall’s nod to the singleplayer campaign that was otherwise dropped from the game about a year into its four-year development cycle. It’s not super clear yet if this sort of stuff is going to go any deeper than giving the action some basic context, as it did here, but after playing the game I’m not really sure I’m bothered anymore. A big singleplayer fan, I was nervous about the prospects of a multiplayer-only shooter, but it might just be that in order to actually succeed in this space, all a game has to do is be spectacularly good - in which case Titanfall is more than in with a chance. The mix of old and new ideas, which seems to permeate every aspect of the game, should help people feel instantly familiar with it and yet give them ample opportunity to learn - a masterful piece of design, should they pull it off. Based on my experiences at Gamescom, I suggest that’s exactly what they’ve achieved, and Titanfall might actually give Call of Duty a run for its money in the “it’s a shooter but it’s also a game” genre. “This changes everything”, I told Drew shortly after my session - and I meant it. Titanfall is headed to Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC next year. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

RISING FROM THE ASHES WITH POWDERFINGER FIRMLY IN THE DUST, LEAD SINGER BERNARD FANNING EMBRACES HIS SINGLE STATUS.

Less than 10 minutes after talking with Bernard Fanning, I get it – an email announcing the release of a new remix package of David Bowie’s hits and myths. For some reason, the thrill of the release is still there. Fanning, former lead singer and multi-instrumentalist from the now defunct Powderfinger, had only just been elaborating on that loss of “reward” and anticipation that was part and parcel of pop music. Perhaps he was unaware of this new release. “When I was a kid,” he explained, “I would save up for weeks to buy a record of my favourite artist. I’d cycle home and pop it down on the player and mull over every note, lyric, everything. There was a great reward in that. I’m coming to the sad realisation that music is slipping into a state of unimportance. A 13-year-old kid would rather play Street Fighter 2 than rock out to Led Zep II, you know. But it could just be me. “I like to write entire albums, not individual (disconnected) songs. It’s how I’ve always written. I go to a studio, write the beds, the rhythms. I write a lot and throw heaps away, because it’s rubbish. It’s part of the self-editing process. But at the end you have a well-crafted product. Today, with instant downloads and stuff that thrill isn’t there. The audiences aren’t owning the experience. You can still get it on the road, though.” On the road is where Fanning is today. I’m calling him in Rockhampton, Queensland, where he’s setting up for that night’s gig. Fanning has been touring his new album Departures for about a month. “It’s been going well,” he shares. “I was a little apprehensive because the two albums [Tea and Sympathy (2005)] are quite different. The main ‘glue’ between them is ‘Wish you Well’, which was a big radio hit.” This time the tour is getting around all the theatres, which brings a dedicated audience. “Many are Powderfinger fans, but I was determined to play only my solo material. Powderfinger finished in 2010, three years ago. We’re done. Why would I want to redo that material on a solo tour? There’s no point doing the same stuff with a different band. I don’t think, at least in the short term, we’ll be like Crowded House, constantly farewelling and reforming. Heck, we played the Crowdie’s farewell gig on Sydney’s Opera House steps!”

grooveguide.co.nz

What is familiar is Fanning’s “politics”. He’s a strong advocate for Aboriginal rights and respect for their culture. Later this year, he’ll perform at the Mbantua Festival up in Alice Springs, a unique and authentic experience of Central Australian desert cultures and food. “It’s awesome,” he enthuses. “There are dream workshops, specialist food even and even a spear throwing competitions. Essentially Aboriginal people have been treated like sh*t since the white man arrived and I wanted to get involved and bring some (visibility) to what’s going ion. Maybe I can make my audience a little bit more aware of these fantastic cultures and get respect that way.” He also notes that, at least in some parts of official Australian federal, there is the adoption of some ‘customs’. I explain the concept of the powhiri, which is widely used here in Aotearoa. “They have something similar called ‘Welcome to the Country’. It’s a sort of welcome to the land. They also do an ‘acknowledgement’, which is used at official government functions. It basically takes into account the people of the land.” He further explains that Aboriginal culture and rights are very slowly becoming accepted and understood, but it will still take several generations to get there – and getting here is next on his list. Fanning will bring to Auckland a mix of both his albums. He’s looking forward to trying out different arrangements from the two albums. “I’m also rearranging some of the work for a vineyard tour later in the year, so in New Zealand I’m going to try out a few ideas. Could be risky, who knows?” I’d take Neil Young’s advice there –don’t shoot ‘till you see the whites of their eyes!
