Hailing from Brooklyn, Indie darlings Beach Fossils are here to steal your heart. Playing on our shores for the first time ever, this four-piece lo-fi outfit is on its way to show us just what we’ve been missing. Word on the street is that their live shows are the bee’s knees.
When not out and out embracing the big bad pop phenomenon, the ‘Gurge, as our Aussie cousins insist on relabelling them as, are doing their damn best to bury saccharine sweetness under a maelstrom of punk angst and guitar bitterness. In the middle of every album there’s always at least one song that’s so sugar coated you’ll literally feel physically sick, followed by a full on one minute hotel room smashing tantrum, including the ejection of a large wide screen TV into the swimming pool six floors below. A lot of Dirty Pop Fantasy could be Unit part 2, and the rest outtakes from an updated version of 2011’s SuperHappyFunTimesFriends or 2007’s Love and Paranoia. Recorded predominantly in Hong Kong (‘cos it was cheaper recording with just a laptop, drum machine and guitars in a dodgy abandoned yoga studio) only five of its 19 tracks break the three-minute barrier. Yet Dirty Pop Fantasy never messes around in getting to the point. ‘Mountains’ has Quan Yeomans performing his best Ian Curtis impression. ‘So Tuff’ is a
Beastie Boys style 60-second punk rock blast, whilst ‘Answering Machine’ is a mellow transgression into Simon & Garfunkel-land, tongue firmly planted in cheek. Now of course, the irony on the irony is the self-titled track. Where Regurgitator almost apologetically confess to their own indulging, and their own propensity to take the proverbial out of it at every opportunity. The ‘Gurge were spawned from the 90’s alt pop boom, they morphed to mainstream, then alt-mainstream, ten MTV chic then into the ‘wilderness years’ and the polarisation of ‘performance art’. Nowadays they are a parody of themselves, and Dirty Pop Fantasy, can both be summed up best by album standout, ‘We Love You!’, with Yeomans declaring, “We know what you want, but we’re not gonna give it to you, ‘coz that would be easy.” Too Right! Taking influence from the 1947 novel Froth on the Daydream, this heart-wrenching tale follows the courtship and marriage of a young couple. As the woman (Audrey Tatou of Amelie fame) develops a severe illness, her partner resorts to increasingly desperate measures to keep her alive. Her only cure is to be surrounded by flowers.

The Smurfs are at it again! This time around, our favourite wee blue folk return to the human world to save Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry) from the evil clutches of Gargamel (Hank Azaria). Together, Papa Smurf, Clumsy, Grouchy and Vanity team up with Patrick and Grace to rescue the damsel in distress.
ROAST OF JAMES FRANCO COMEDY CENTRAL, 9PM
The Comedy Central Roast is a strong annual tradition in the funny folk industry. Going hard since 1998, this star-studded event involves a hand-picked Roastee on the receiving end of good-hearted ribbing from fellow comics. This year’s edition features none other than Hollywood heart-throb James Franco.
Composers Michael O’Neill and Peter van der Fluit wrote the music first and then dubbed it into the film, so there
is a minute disconnect between the audio and visual. It’s jarring but amusing hearing Shakespeare in hip-hop or soft rock form at first, but also an ingenious way to focus the attention on the story. That said, some of the text gets lost in the mix, many of the longer lines poured into musical phrases that aren’t big enough to handle them. And essentially it’s a one-joke film that, by the third act, has well and truly made its point. Purists might complain that the light-hearted treatment trashes the text but for the most part it’s fun and proves that Shakespeare’s story really is timeless. WRITTEN BY FLICKS.CO.NZ

The Ice Queen that melts hearts takes the lead as a young journalist following a seemingly ludicrous classified ad looking for a partner to travel through time.
MAGIC. Need we really say any more? If you’re not into illusions and wonder, we probably wouldn’t want to hang out with you. You’d also probably (most likely) not be very cool. Did we mention there’s a Sam L. Jackson cameo? Yeah, figured that would get your attention.

Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before sees the Montagues and Capulets as white-trash Kiwi families feuding in a trailer park (a “boganised” Waipu camp ground). It’s also the musical version, a mad pop, hip-hop and rock opera that will defy expectation, with weird and wonderful art direction, plenty of visual gags – including a character who gets around on a fitness ball – and several scenes that, viewed out of context, would no doubt seem extremely odd. It also has a good cast of misfits, not to mention its young star-crossed lovers, played convincingly by Derya Parlak and Christopher Landon.

THE ELECTRIC LADY JANELLE MONÁE’S NEW ALBUM CONTINUES TO FIGHT FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS.
The power of dreams, the creative hand of God and the role of androids in popular music – a conversation with Janelle Monáe is like nothing you’ll ever experience. Talking about her sophomore full-length album, The Electric Lady, it’s easy to dismiss her approach to making music, but as those soft-spoken vowels and dulcet tones draw you in, you realise the 27-year-old is far more grounded in reality than she first appears. “The Electric Lady came to me through my paintings – I paint every night when I perform,” she explains. “I didn’t understand why, so ended up asking my therapist back home, who encouraged me to give her image a name. Looking at her, I knew this woman was not to be marginalised and I got this strong energy from her, so I named her The Electric Lady. I thought, ‘Why can’t I be an electric lady?’ A new breed of 21st century women, who thinks differently about politics, love, duality, religion and so on.” Following on from her debut, The ArchAndroid, this forthcoming release serves as parts (or Suites, as she refers to them) four and five of her Metropolis saga, a musical journey told through the experiences of android heroine Cindi Mayweather. Just like her other works, Lady seeks to “empower women, to tell universal stories in unforgettable ways”. “[This album] is like the big action sequence in the third act of an epic film. Every party this album starts, or every baby born because of it, is actually another victory against the Great Divide.” Saying Cindi was sent to her “by God, she came to me in my dreams”, Monáe adds that the character has become part of her DNA and the science fiction theme has becomes an “incredible” way to speak about present issues – notably race, gender and sexuality. “The use of the android represents a new form of the Other. There are others considered part of the Other – members of the gay and lesbian community, to immigrants to the excommunicated – so the android is just a new form of this Otherness.” In Suites IV and V, Cindi moves from self-realisation to selfactualisation: From the knowledge and owning of her unique superpowers, to actually using them to better the world around her – just as Monáe herself hopes to do.

“I like to think you can hear me using my superpowers this time,” she says. “And not just talking or wondering about them. I still have a big job – I want to inspire and encourage. I think this album is very important as I think it will open up new people to know who I am and what I’m about. My job is never done as I’m seeking to empower even more people.” Growing up an African-American woman in Kansas City, Monáe says there was “a lot of confusion and nonsense”, and accordingly created her “own little world” among music and musical theatre. But while it was a difficult time during her childhood, she is thankful for being raised around strong female figures that inspired her to dream big. “There was a girl up the street from me – she danced and sang, and I just admired her and wanted to be like her. I also had a lot of female cousins who I could talk openly and candidly to, and my grandmother. I admire her for her resilience – you know, she had like 11 or 12 children and she worked in the county jail for 25 years as a cook, rode the bus every day… for her to be that strong really empowered me. And, of course, my mother and aunt had very strong personalities and encouraged me to speak my mind at all times.” Another figure, who Monáe describes as her “twin”, that impacted on the singer-songwriters life is Erykah Badu – someone she was fortunate to work with on her first single ‘Q.U.E.E.N’. Written around the idea of a woman’s place in the world, and accompanied by a statement video, Monáe describes the experience of working with one of her idols as “such a joy”. “She and I are great friends. Erykah has been a very instrumental in helping my career – she took me on tour when I first got into the industry and has been like a mentor. Aussie band Regurgitator once put out the single ‘I like your old stuff better than your new stuff’ as a response to their constant stylistic changes. The band, over their 10+ year career have been both experimental and sometimes just plain ‘mental-as-anything’ producing music as varied as reggae, punk and pop-o-tronica. They’ve done many Big Day Out appearances, recorded in multiple locations, and even created the outrageous “Band in a Bubble” project, where they recorded an entire album (2004’s Mishmash) in a fish-bowl style glass box studio in Federation Square, Melbourne, totally exposed to the public gaze. Regurgitator are well known for being humorously eccentric. Every album has a playful theme. When rang through to founding member, Ben Ely I asked if the famous reptile from the …Art album was likely to reappear. The said beast was an ongoing joke about art pretension that loosely threads through the album’s non-musical moments. “Oh, you mean the ‘Nude Lizard’. Yeah, nah. Maybe!” And then he promptly hung up. Well that went well, yes? Five minutes later Ely called back, apologising for his Skype connection and blaming Telstra Australia , who were still in mourning over the loss of the Wallabies to the AB’s over the weekend. “It’s not fair. Every time ‘you’ (NZ) win - my computer sulks!” The band formerly and currently known as Regurgitator first struck out from their hometown of Brisbane in 1993, having been the brain child of Ely and Quan Yeomans. Their first album, Tu-Plang (1996) was recorded in the jungle out side Bangkok, to keep costs down, whilst the platinum selling Unit which spawned the hits ‘I like Your Old Stuff Better than your new stuff,’ ‘Black Bugs’, ‘Polyester Girl’ and! (The song Formerly Known As)” was made in a condemned Fortitude Warehouse, affectionately dubbed ‘The Dirty Room’. I asked Ely about this deathwish/wander lust to record in esoteric and

dodgy locations. “It was about experiences and challenges. The latest album (Dirty Pop Fantasy) was also recorded outside Australia in Hong Kong. It was in an old yoga studio. We’d lug our gear up and since the elevator didn’t work we’d just stay in mostly for 10 weeks just recording. The gear we took, it was limited to what you can get on a plane: guitar, octopad, laptop, drum machine.” Ely and Yeomans have been in Hong Kong a few times and were keen to record there. “There’s no distraction from friends and family. And we like the hustle and bustle of a city that never sleeps. There’s cute café’s and awesome graffiti. The pollution is pretty bad, so you tend to stay in and being up nine floors we lived and recording in the same place.” The recording for Dirty … actually kicked off in January, in Melbourne but the vibe wasn’t right, hence the move. The album has also fired off a couple of singles ‘Brain Brain’ and ‘Mountains’ which are both doing the rounds on Australian radio right now. The release also coincides with the vinyl release of Unit, Tu-Plang and MishMash, and a tour, which includes Wellington on 20 September. Having completed the project now the band are completely negative to be positive about it. It’s the playful irony that keeps them going. In their press release Yeomans wrote “More than anything else this (new) album probably represents the band finally and unequivocally disappearing up its own arse!” - meaning: that the band don’t, and never will take them selves to seriously. “And that, is the essence of everything we do, “notes Ely,” By being creative, flexible and retaining a sense of humour we can remain fresh. FIFA 14 PREVIEW EA’s FIFA series is a big deal. Exactly how big varies from country to country and from gamer to gamer, of course, but if you step back and take a look at the big picture, there’s no question it’s one of the most important franchises in EA’s deep catalogue - or in all of gaming, if it comes to that. At Gamescom in Germany we had a chance to first go hands-on with the PlayStation 3 version and then the Xbox One edition of the upcoming FIFA 14; a deliberately constructed scenario that ensured the differences between them would be apparent. The ploy was successful; there’s no hiding the fact that the next generation much as the current gen was to the last - is a big step up, and that’s going to have a marked impact on the way sports are simulated. For a start, the difference between the versions just in the in-game (distant) camera is significant. If you’ve ever switched between watching a football match broadcast in SD and HD, you’ll have an idea what to expect; everything is just so much crisper and more “readable” on the next-gen version. There’s loads of fancy new tech behind the gameplay, too, which the game’s executive producer - David Rutter - was more than happy to tell me about when we caught up in Germany recently. For a start, David explained, “the step-based locomotion stuff, that changes the way the players move, is a massive change; we’ve completely changed the dynamic of sprint, run, jog, and walk. We’ve also introduced a kind of ‘contain’ and ‘jostle’ and ‘shield’ button on the left trigger now.”
NEED FOR SPEED: RIVALS PREVIEW Need for Speed and I go way back; all the way back, in fact, to the very first game in the series, which I was blown away by when I got my hands on it in 1995. There’s just something about the game that’s managed to hold my attention over the years, where few other games could. You’ll be shocked to learn, then, that I was pretty excited to have a crack at Rivals - this years entry in the constantly expanding series. Taking control of a cop car (and a ridiculously gorgeous one, at that), I first set about simply exploring the game’s open world - as fast as I could, naturally. Playing on the PlayStation 4 version, the game controls like a dream; within minutes I was power sliding around huge, banked curves like a seasoned professional (or someone on Top Gear) and was able to gain serious ground on those dirty car-racing bandits that dared to plague my beat (sorry, I get into character when I play games.) It’s hard to be too definitive on the entire game world, obviously, as my total play time on the title was around an hour (tops) and the world itself had been partitioned into a smaller subsection for the demo, but wow did it flow nicely from segment to segment. The corners are so fluid that it becomes less about being able to get around them (or tell they’re coming) and more about using your skill to get through them with as much speed as possible. This, this I like.

If you’re not familiar with the concept of the game, it’s quite ambitious. On the surface, the “cops vs. robbers” concept, while fun, isn’t new to the franchise or even gaming in general. Mix in an open world, Need for Speed’s Alldrive system (that lets you find challenges and link up with friends via a simple, intuitive interface), and mechanics that sound - on the surface - like they’ll truly destroy the wall between single- and multiplayer, and you’ve got a package that feels simultaneously comprehensive and very compelling.
No matter the reasons why, FIFA 14 certainly feels different to play - and it looks every bit the beautiful game on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well. If you’re interested in a match or two, FIFA 14 is out on September 14 for current systems, and then later in the year on the new consoles.
Rivals is due to release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 22, with a next-generation version planned for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 some time this year. If you like driving really fast, don’t have access to a racetrack, and don’t want to die, make a note on your calendar.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that when a long-serving artist releases a self-titled album, it’s a time of change. Often reserved for new performers and debut albums, the self-titled title marks a new beginning, redefining what it means to be an established act. This couldn’t be truer for US prog rock band Dream Theater – and guitarist/founding member John Petrucci is happy to admit they fall into this cliché for good reason. “Self-titling the album was a way to illustrate that we remain in a constant state of evolution. Before we got into the studio, we got together and talked about the direction we wanted to take and the timing seemed significant. We wanted to show people the band is still passionate about what we do, you know, we have been going for 27 odd years and every time we step into the studio, it’s a fresh experience. We are striving to move forward, do better.” The timing he is referring to, of course, is with the introduction of drummer Mike Mangini, after the departure of founder and icon Mike Portnoy in 2010. While Mike featured on their 2011 album A Dramatic Turn of Events, he hadn’t been able to forge his place until now, with Mike both writing and recording songs as a fully-fledged member. “He was with us for 15 months on tour, so we got to know him well over many dinners and many glasses of wine,” John says with a smile. “He’s got a very strong work ethic; he’s always there to get it done.” At the end of that particular tour in 2011, it was time to start writing. During soundchecks, the band would jam and record their ideas, and John would bring in material he wrote independently. Following the conclusion of the tour, the band took a break but continued writing, and got into the studio in early 2013. Recording at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, John says the boys knew how they wanted the content to sound – for it to “just jump out of the speakers”, to “come alive”. Enlisting the help of producer Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush) for engineering and mixing, the result is an explosive, adventurous journey of rhythm and metal. “We wanted to factor everybody in in terms of verbally and melody,” explains John. “We wanted an album that really spoke to people. It needed to come out loud and proud, so we needed an epic piece to showcase that.” Enter the instrumentals, ‘False Awakening Suite’ and ‘Enigma Machine’ – the band’s first since 2010. closer ‘Illumination Theory’, while ‘Along for the Ride’ embodies a freespirited vibe. John, as well as the other members, agree the success is due to the unity of personalities which enabled them to make a statement with sound. “Our approach is quite old-school in the respect that not many people come together in the studio and put it together,” says John. “As a band, that impacts our songs because when we get together in that environment, it allows us to focus, so we got up in the studio for five months. “We would go in, Starbucks in hand to start the day, and everyone has their ideas that have been collected over time. You know, little snippets recorded on their iPhone to demos they have been working on, then we sift through it all in the studio. That’s when the real meat, the magic, all comes together, just through jamming and playing these ideas.” And John adds it was good to have new blood onboard in the creative process. “Coming in as the new guy, Mike was very respectful, aware that we had all known each other forever, but at the same time offered up new ideas. I was impressed at his creativity and what he was offering up, so we wanted you to be able to hear his presence on the new record.” After forming in 1985, a lot has changed since John, bassist John Myung and drummer Mike decided to form a rock band during their years at Berklee College of Music. But as musicians have come – and gone – he says Dream Theater is still heading in the direction he had always imagined, even after 12 albums and nearly 30 years. “When we started, we were very young,” he admits. “And basically started playing the music that came naturally, that had influenced and inspired us. We were all big fans of Yes, Rush and Metallica, and that really came through in our style, particularly on the first three albums – this real mix of progressive and metal – and you can hear those influences in the past and continue to hear that now, which reassures me that our style is intact. “We have kept those influences that steered our sound, which in turn allowed us to take our own path and take it to different places.
