These two gents have presented us with musical gold over the years. And there have been plenty of years, at that. We can pretty much guarantee that you’ve grown up with ‘Slice of Heaven’ or at least heard pub wails to ‘Loyal’ at some point in your lifetime. Now’s the chance to get these legends in the flesh. Move over, jukebox.

Devilskin have been wowing audiences over the recent past with their explosive live performances. Rock goddess Jennie Skulander dominates the stage like she’s been doing it forever. If you enjoy powerful wailing guitars and equally impressive vocals (if not more so), we’re sure this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

BRING ME THE HORIZON

Presenting the Latin Festival this October is Atico Cocina, where the best bands, dancers, singers and food will be under one roof. Ever wanted to learn to salsa? Not just eat it, but actually pull out those sick moves on the dance floor. Well here’s your chance, with free lessons and more at the coolest part of town.

Bring yourself and your friends and watch your musical horizons broaden by the minute. This British Metalcore band from Sheffield has been performing for almost a decade now, and their position as festival headliners is unmarred. Oli Sykes sure can shriek for such a pretty face.

With their new album on the way, Blacklistt are hitting the road. Here to provide the public with hardhitting, infectious guitar licks and heavy beats, these rockers are armed with one hell of a melodic arsenal. Playing classic hits as well as new material, this is a show for any and all Blacklistt fans alike.

Word on the street is that this Ozzie rock outfit finished their I See Seaweed national album tour by shredding the Sydney Opera House to musical bits, then hopping on a plane to play Primavera Festivals in both Portugal and Spain. Breaking Bad has ended. There was a massive swell of hype around the show as it approached its final season with a huge amount of people jumping on the bandwagon and expectations skyrocketing to astronomical degrees. I’m happy to say, in my opinion at least, creator Vince Gilligan along with his team nailed the ending and have created a complete TV show that sits up there with the likes of The Sopranos and The Wire as one of the best. Renowned for its darkness and intensity, Breaking Bad is the story of Walter White’s descent into evil. He starts the show as a high school science teacher and car washer supporting a pregnant wife and handicapped teenage son. Diagnosed with lung cancer and given a short time left to live, Walter decides to use his chemistry prowess to create top quality methamphetamine in order to secure a quick fortune for his family. As the show progresses, Walter rises in power and amasses a lot of money, but along the way carries out acts of escalating evil, leading to the corrosion of his soul and the destruction of everything he cares about. Ultimately, for me, Breaking Bad is a show about pride, specifically modern masculine pride that is attached to wealth. Show creator Vince Gilligan famously described its story as the transformation of Mr Chips into Scarface, which it is, but what causes that transformation is Walt’s wounded pride, and the jealousy, bitterness and fury that comes with it. He’s a hugely intelligent man that should’ve become a millionaire through his scientific expertise - instead, former friends are thriving off his work while he struggles with two jobs to support his family. “Walter White is a damaged individual,” Gilligan said in a recent interview. “He is a man of great pride. And he is a man of very damaged and low self-esteem and because of that the self-aggrandizement that he feels about being a kingpin is a yardstick he uses to measure himself up against. Up until the day he started doing this he didn’t think he had any power.” Walter, who also goes by the pseudonym Heisenberg, is one of the nastiest, most unsympathetic protagonists I’ve ever come across. Tony Soprano and Don Draper are certainly comparable, but there are certain things that have happened through the course of Breaking Bad that make Walter fairly despicable. The creators had to be careful as they pushed it as far as they could, without pushing it too far.

“I torture myself with that - I lost sleep for several seasons,” says Gilligan. “If the character isn’t likeable who is going to watch him. You have to set the show off on the right foot. You have to show why Walter White was making these bad decisions. This show was always a kind of experiment; to show a transformation of the main character and have a good guy by force of will transform himself into the bad guy. If you embrace that mandate that we gave ourselves with courage then you have to say to yourself that this guy will get worse with every episode.” Breaking Bad got progressively darker with each season and the final eight episodes made for some very traumatic entertainment. On some level, I feel the show’s creators were unhappy with the cult status the show had achieved and how its characters had earned armies of fans. People walking around in Heisenberg t-shirts somewhat miss the point - Heisenberg isn’t cool, he’s a monster. The meth business isn’t sexy and glamourous, it’s disgusting and violent. I think the final season, specifically the Nazi characters, are the writers trying to really hammer that home. But, again, it’s a balancing act - make the show to repulsive and even its staunchest fans will be turned off. “Every audience member has a threshold of disgust and how much they are going to buy into this guys journey but with every episode someone else watching the same episode will say ‘ugh I can’t watch this anymore’”, explains Gilligan. “The viewers for the most part seem to be very engaged and enthusiastic towards the show - even the ones who don’t sympathize with the character. Walter has an amazing instinct for survival and manages to get himself out of very tight scrape and they are intrigued about what comes next.” While it didn’t work for some, for millions of us around the globe, Breaking Bad is an absolute masterpiece. A dark and unsettling story told in a unique show that raises the bar for tension-filled screen entertainment. Goodbye, Walter White, and thank you, Vince Gilligan.
