2 GUNS
GENERAL RELEASE
Based on the life of renowned French sculptor Camille Claudel, stunning French actress Juliette Binoche shines in the title role. Set in the year aforementioned, the flick focuses on Camille’s breakdown at the end of her career as she deals with mental health issues. directed by BALTASAR KORMÁKUR
HEMLOCK GROVE
Starring DENZEL WASHINGTON, MARK WAHLBERG, PAULA PATTON
THE BOX , 8.30PM
Based on the Brian McGreevy horror novel of the same name, Hemlock Grove is the latest Emmynominated, high-profile series from premium US cable network Netflix. It tells the story of the brutal murder of a teenage girl, which sparks a hunt for her killer.
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE SKY MOVIES GREATS, 8.30PM
When a four-eyed, slightly plump, seven-year-old Olive gets invited to compete in the fiercely competitive “Little Miss Sunshine” beauty competition in California, the whole Hoover family rallies behind her. They pile into their rusted-out VW bus and head West on a three-day tragicomic journey filled with surprises and leading up to Olive’s big debut.
PRIME ROCKS: PINK FLOYD PRIME, 9.40PM
2 Guns is that rare popcorn flick that succeeds at being fun and breezy, and features just enough twists to entertain without getting too complicated. Denzel Washington employs his usual effortless charisma, and Marky Mark slips into his usual role of ‘man with muscles who doesn’t emote very well’ with ease. Well, that’s not entirely true - his character here is a smart-ass, a guy who’s constantly cracking wise, which he doesn’t completely sell, but isn’t too distracting. It helps that he has Denzel to bounce off, and the banter between them proves to be good value. And it’s so great to see Bill Paxton on screen again! He steals every scene he’s in as a ruthless interrogator working for [spoiler redacted]. Paxton makes a really convincing bad guy, and I’d love to see him in more roles like this. Edward James Olmos doesn’t
get as much to do, but chews his share of scenery when required. It makes sense that this is based on a series of comics. The plot feels properly considered rather than slapped together, and plays out as a series of reveals. You can almost feels the end of each issue as another revelation drops and changes all the character dynamics. This structure helps keep things entertaining, and any crime film with this many double crosses gets a tick from me. 2 Guns bubbles along with gunfire, explosions, wisecracks and just enough story to keep your brain semi-engaged. In a (Northern Hemisphere) summer where every blockbuster has felt bogged down with doom and gloom, it’s downright refreshing. TONY STAMP, FLICKS.CO.NZ
MON 21 OCT DOWNTON ABBEY
This is the story of the making of the Pink Floyd album Wish You Were Here, told by musicians, producers, designers, photographers and studio engineers. It was a process at times tortured and hanging on a thread, at times sublime and almost magical. It was a creative process that culminated in the now famous sessions at London’s Abbey Road studios.
PRIME, 8.30PM
The wait is over as the greatly anticipated new series of the Prime favourite begins with a 90 minute premiere episode. Six months after Matthew’s tragic death, his loss is still felt. Mary struggles to face a new future with her fatherless child and is encouraged by the family to pick up the pieces.

ADAM NEAL RACKET/ORLEANS Based in Auckland Adam is a returning Grand Finalist from Beam Bar Legend 2012. The current Operations Manager of the Britomart Hospitality group based in Auckland. You can find Adam playing his trade these days at the ever Rum friendly Racket or the exciting newly revamped Orleans in Britomart. A Scottish native he is proud to call New Zealand home these days and will be gunning for the Beam Bar Legend title in 2013.
TINA LEIGH THE HORSE AND TRAP Tina Leigh from the Horse and Trap in Mt Eden Auckland was the surprise package from the Northern Semi-Finals. She took out some big names to earn her spot fair and square as the public’s choice to progress to the Grand Final. The only female left standing to vie for the title, she’s ready to show the guys just how it’s done. Can she be the first female to win the coveted Beam Bar Legend? If anyone can, Tina can.
CHRIS DOBSON EMPORIUM BAR & EATERY The dark horse of Beam Bar Legend 2013, Chris nailed the public’s choice in the Central region Semi-Finals. Chris is at the forefront of the Hawkes Bay bartending fraternity based out of Napier as it moves towards developing a very highly skilled hub of New Zealand hospitality. Mr consistent, Chris has the all round skills required to secure the title of Beam Bar Legend 2013 and the $25,000 prize.
SANTANA KAWE-WADDICK BARLUCA/THE KILN Santana is the contestant that easily has the farthest to travel. Based in the deep south, he is keen to show that they can foot it with the bartenders from the major cities. Aiming to become the biggest thing to come out of Invercargill since Munro and Shadbolt, you will not meet anyone that is more passionate and supportive of the New Zealand bartending industry than Santana. It may just be declared a local holiday if he can take home the trophy.
ALEXANDER JACKMAN BARETTA Talent to burn would best describe Alex Jackman. An exciting young prospect leading the way in Christchurch as the industry continues to rebuild. You can find Alex behind the stick at the magnificent Baretta these days imparting a wealth of drinks and product knowledge you would expect to find in someone much longer in the tooth. While he is young in the industry Alex definitely has all the hallmarks of a future Legend.
ADAM SNOOK CUCKOO COCKTAIL EMPORIUM With an abundance of personality he has the ability to set this competition on fire. Don’t be fooled by his flair for the extravagant – Adam has the bar skills to back it up. A shining example of the over-abundance of bartending talent in the tight-knit Wellington community, no one can ever accuse Adam of not giving it his all. If there is one person who will walk away from this competition having asked the question of his fellow competitors, it is Adam.

CODY CHESNUTT “I used to wear that,” says soul singer Cody ChesnuTT, referring to his trademark blue helmet, ”because I was on the ‘front lines’. Standing up for what I believed! I feel like I’m a soldier in song, you know? Songs like ‘Everybody’s Brother’ are part of the everyday journey people take, and I take it with them. That song is a mash up of personalities, which are sometimes me, sometimes others. I tell the blunt truth of experience,” Cody’s on the phone to me from Charlotte Carolina, where the sounds of a cash register and a local EFTPOS machine are blinging down the line. He’s in a diner, on the road and in the middle of his US tour before heading Down Under. The night before the news about the US Congress budget stalemate has just come in. The Government has effectively gone into shut down. Rumours of economic collapse are bleeding all over the morning’s press “It’s crazy, but nobody cares out here.” ChesnuTT notes, “This is not real. America is still trading. Politics doesn’t happen at that level in places like Charlotte. But if a school closes, well then you’ll know!” ChesnuTT, who’s a parent himself, is acutely aware of the politics of the average man and woman. He’s build a career modeled around his heroes like Cutis Mayfield and to a lesser degree Gil Scott-Heron. ChesnuTT does soul music with a capital ‘S’. His street smart, edgy old skool solo, debut The Headphone Masterpiece, which was recorded on a 4-track cassette in his bedroom recording studio, The Sonic Promiseland, received critical acclaim in 2002. It garnered extra attention with a track reworked by The Roots and released as ‘The Seed (2.0)’, with ChesnuTT back on vocals. The following year the song was nominated for two Moonman statuettes at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards and a further nomination at the Shortlist Music Prize. A little later he appeared in rock star photographer Dave Chappelle’s film Block Party.
had.” He made a couple of albums and an EP in 2010 before dropping out of sight. “I was on the road a lot and I needed time for my new family (ChesnuTT has a boy and a girl, whom he refers to as his new source of inspiration).” He also wanted time to reflect, although he won’t devolve further but some of the resulting music has a gospel theme to it, especially ‘Til I meet Thee’ which opens his 2012 return effort Landing on a Hundred. “It’s not about finding God. Ben Harper does this too. The truth is that Gospel is the real Soul music. It’s the purest form Landing on a Hundred, ChesnuTT’s third studio album, was released in October 2012. It was made in Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, where The Rev. Al Green, Buddy Guy and Ike & Tina Turner cut many of career defining albums and singles. Much of it maintains the 60’s vibe but deeper tracks like ‘Don’t Follow Me’ have a more industrial sound, feeling more like Alison Goldfrapp’s territory, than Percy Sledge or Otis Redding. “Yeah, it’s actually inspired by the music I grew up with. I was born in 1968 and on the radio was all that great black music and then there was Michael Jackson = a superhero when I was 10 years old. I had a real connection with his darker songs. He was soulfully magical.” The album’s title is street lingo for telling the whole truth, and has been described by the critics as “easy-going vintage soul that rolls magnificently on the ear”. It’s definitely not hard to find comparisons with the socially conscious soul records of Marvin Gay, especially What’s Going On? “For me and what I do this is the perfect way to get my message across. That music has real impact. It did then – Look what it did for Dr King and Human Rights and all those struggles. It still has impact today. I know because I can see it in my audience. And that is very satisfying.” TIM GRUAR SEE HIM LIVE: CODY CHESTNUTT

KNOW WHEN TO HOLD ‘EM BEN AFFLECK STEPS AWAY FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR FOR AN ACTION-PACKED, HIGH-STAKES ROLE IN RUNNER RUNNER. He’s a critically celebrated, Oscar award-winning director, who has starred in some of the biggest Hollywood flops. And while some may think this is a good reason to keep Ben Affleck behind the camera, as opposed to in front of it, he admits to enjoying the freedom that comes with acting in someone else’s movie. “It’s really, really satisfying to direct a movie because you have a sense of all the shape and control and that’s rewarding,” he explains. “But by the same token, there’s something very liberating about just being an actor where your only concern is your performance. If it’s a complete disaster or there’s some giant crises, you just go, ‘Oh, I’ll be in my trailer. You go figure it out!’” This could be one of the reasons why he’s recently signed on as the new Batman, is currently working as an actor on David Fincher’s Gone Girl, and is director Brad Furman’s leading man in the gambling thriller Runner Runner. Affleck says he immensely enjoyed the opportunity to “chew the scenery” in his new role and, after the enormous success he had as director of last year’s Argo, relished the chance to “just be an actor again” in the role of Ivan Block, a sly offshore entrepreneur running an online poker world. Princeton grad student Richie (Justin Timberlake), believing he’s been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Ben Affleck). Richie is seduced by Block’s promise of immense wealth and goes to work for his benefactor. But when the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: Attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him. “I had played really opaque, minimalist characters recently,” Affleck says of why he took the role. “Men who couldn’t afford to give anything away, so I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with that opacity and how to communicate stuff around that.
“Ivan Block is the unapologetic mentor who says, ‘Get what you can get and don’t think twice about it,’” Affleck adds. “Block wants to manipulate Richie, to get him to be part of his team. His mission is to groom Richie so he won’t object to some of the darker things he sees.” Having a long-standing history with online poker – Affleck was rumoured to have been treated for a gambling addiction in 2001 – he was able to draw on his past for the role and bring a deeper understanding to what drives people to want more, to go big and risk it all. “Having played poker online and stopped because I thought it was crooked, I thought this was a world we could introduce the audience to that they really don’t know about,” he says. “I always feel like that’s the key: When I go and see movies, I want the filmmaker to show me something in an authentic way that I wouldn’t otherwise have access to, whether it’s Middle Earth or a bar in Boston that I’d be too scared to go into.” In a film that looks at a new American Dream – a world where everyone wants the biggest and best more instantaneously – Affleck’s Ivan draws inspiration from the likes of Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas in the iconic 1980s flick Wall Street). “That was something I openly looked at and wanted to try to emulate in a lot of ways. That whole thing of how do older guys seduce younger guys into that world and convince them to set aside whatever inherent morality they bring to it, and then convince them that the only thing that’s relevant is the accumulation of wealth, and cultivating the ruthless personality it takes to be successful in that world. “I like the arc of how it seems so appealing and sexy and interesting - it’s got this intense allure to us, particularly as young men - and then there’s that period where you get disillusioned and you realise that it’s a soulless and corrupt way to live.” Laura WEASER IN CINEMAS THU 17 OCT

AUSTRALIAN STUDY SUGGESTS GAMING IS GOOD FOR YOU
A new study from the University of Melbourne in Australia suggests that gaming is not only good for you, but that it might also offset the negative impact of exposure to screen violence. Jane Burns, the chief executive of the Young and Well Co-operative Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, suggested “moderate gaming can reduce stress and improve health and wellbeing” and that “it also helps young people form connections with peers because gaming creates a sense of community, mutual participation and a shared passion. That’s the kind of thing that young people could harness to improve their mental health.” Daniel Johnson, director of the Queensland University of Technology, went on to stress that a balanced approach is important, and that certain media (citing examples like Grand Theft Auto, and the film A Clockwork Orange) are clearly not made to be consumed by children. The study found that the best results were found in children who participated in a “moderate” amount of play, versus those that played an excessive amount or not at all; as to exactly what moderate translates to in terms of hours a week (or similar) was not detailed.
REVIEW: BEYOND: TWO SOULS Beyond:Two Souls is a pretty great, kind of long, sci-fi supernatural thriller about Jodie - a young girl - and the spirit Aiden attached to her with a supernatural tether. The game elements are pretty simple, boiling down largely to just walking around, with the occasional quicktime-style action. When you get full control of Jodie, the left thumbstick does the usual walking around but the right stick doesn’t do the usual looking around. Instead you’ll use the right thumbstick to do actions like opening doors and investigating items. It’s very simple. Aiden himself has a bit more direct control, and he also has a cool ability where he can incapacitate enemies and sometimes take them over. The story starts in a police station, after Jodie has been picked up by a friendly Sheriff. Jodie has clearly been in some trouble - her shaved head reveals a large scar. This episode, like many in the story, is short and serves more to establish the character than make you play a game. The motion and facial capture techniques used to make Beyond have created characters that you can truly empathise with. Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe (who actually act out the key roles) both put their all into their work, and it shows -.neither seem to have phoned in their performances simply because they spent their days covered in dots and surrounded by green screens.
FINAL FANTASY VII MIGHT BE REMADE…
… for smartphones. The news was revealed by publisher Square Enix’s game director and producer, Takashi Tokita, in a discussion about the soon-to-bereleased mobile version of Final Fantasy VI. Assuming that Square’s remake of Final Fantasy VI (and other projects that also revisit the company’s extensive back catalogue of gaming products) prove to be successful, “we would like to one day be able to work with [Final Fantasy] VII” Tokita explained in an interview with gaming site Kotaku. Fans have been asking Square for a remake of Final Fantasy VII - one of the most popular games in the long running RPG series - for a long time, but the company has yet to bow to the pressure. Whether they will even now, and even on smartphones (a platform that would likely be low on the list of preferences among many segments of the gaming audience), is yet to be determined.
The episodes are played out in a haphazard fashion throughout Jodie’s life. You see her as a child, a rebellious teenager, and as a young woman. Despite the non-chronological sequence, the story develops in a wonderfully linear fashion. Secrets in the past are hidden until later in the game that not only explain previous story elements but also lead into greater secrets and twists. There are echoes of a number of films in Beyond, especially the horror classic Carrie (about a bullied young woman with paranormal powers) and the Sixth Sense. Story is everything in this game. Jodie is a shattered human and the narrative is constructed so you see her broken over and over and then attempting to rebuild. The beautiful graphics and facial expressions bond you to Jodie, and the raw emotion embodied by Aiden is conveyed not via gameplay but by sound design and the reactions of the supporting cast. By the end of the game you are as connected to Jodie as Aiden is. Hadyn Green

COMMON GROUND THE CALIFORNIAN SUPERGROUP COMMON KINGS PREPARE TO UNLEASH THEIR NEW SOUND AT RAGGAMUFFIN.
During their recent tour, I caught up with Common Kings over the phone to talk about how their latest EP Summer Anthems was written and how the band’s unique blend of R&B and reggae, described as a Bruno Mars-Maroon 5 love child meets Sublime, was received in their base of Orange County, California. Originally from the islands of Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and Hawaii, the guys say their unmistakabe sound was welcomed with open arms throughout the state before they branched out further. Born from a simple jam session, it wasn’t long before the band started gigging around the OC. Their popular reception was mostly thanks to their multi-genre mash up of music. It’s a blend that has seen the band grow and evolve from their early days, but even now Common Kings have stayed true to themselves and their roots. Summer Anthems is no different. It is, however, bigger and more diverse than the other music, with the band going into the studio and writing with every intention of pushing themselves outside of their boundaries and seeing what they could create. The final result is a collection of tracks that fit somewhere between several genres, but masterfully never feel as though they’re on the outside of anything at all. It’s this paradox that allows the Common Kings to switch seamlessly and effortlessly from one sound to the other. Bassist Lui “Ivan” Kirimaua says they had the opportunity to work with a great producer and collaborate with a small group of writers to help build the EP into a point of difference from their other records. As with all writers, of either music or prose, the Common Kings come up against some challenges during the writing process. “Some songs come easily, others take some time.”
“We went into writing” says Kirimaua, “with that in mind [expanding and building on their roots]”. Common Kings built the bones of their songs on the road and continued to work on their time off, “it [begins with] concepts and ideas and in our down time we flesh them out”. Over the course of their travels, the Common Kings have developed a fanatical following, with sold out shows in Hawaii, Los Angeles, Guam, Tokyo and Australia, as well as over seven million YouTube views of their independently released hits, including, ‘Alcoholic’, ‘Wade In Your Water’ and ‘No Other Love’. It is a testament that Common Kings have a long career ahead of them – much of this is thanks to the band’s dynamics and the abundance of the personality within each of them. They each brought those personalities to the writing and recording process of Summer Anthems, and, naturally, this can be heard all across the EP. When it comes to their live show, this creates a performance that is as much electrifying as it is soothing and relaxing. Their songs range from pop hits to a rock, reggae, R&B fusion, proving the Common Kings are on as much of a literal journey as they are on a musical one. It’s this journey that’s bringing the band to our shores for a follow up from their Raggamuffin gig in February of this year. They captured their fair share of fans with groove inducing beats and relatable lyrics, combined with an infectious feel good vibe that we can expect more of from Summer Anthems. They’re playing here for five days and in that time will be hitting as much of the breadth and width of the North Island as possible. They’ll be playing shows in Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Auckland, and Mt Maunganui. SEBASTIAN MACKAY SEE THEM LIVE: COMMON KINGS
It’s good then that they can turn to their influences for inspiration and know how it will affect the finished product. The band says their influences, ranging from being “raised in church, to Stevie Wonder, our families, everyday life, great artists and great acts” have helped to shape and develop their sound.
