NO SHARP OBJECTS

English singer-songwriter, James Blunt, will be kicking off a tour next year with a one-off performance in Auckland. Blunt will be backed by a full band he is bringing along and supported by Australian country duo, Busby Marou. The timing for the news comes the week of James Blunt’s latest album release, Moon Landing.

Activision and Marvel have announced The Amazing SpiderMan 2 - a follow-up to last year’s The Amazing Spider-Man - which is planned for release alongside the upcoming film of the same name. The title is in development once again at Beenox; their previous Amazing Spider-Man title was generally well regarded and they also have considerable experience working on similar titles.

GOOD LORDE, AGAIN

The winner of the 2013 APRA Silver Scroll Award is ‘Royals’, written by Ella Yelich-O’Connor and her collaborator Joel Little, performed by Lorde. “Ella and Joel have created a song that has quite rightfully taken the world by storm. It is testament to the quality of song that it should gain such widespread support, but also be chosen as the best song of the past year by their songwriter peers” says Anthony Healy, Director of NZ Operations, APRA. The APRA Silver Scroll award has recognised songwriting excellence since 1965, paying tribute to the best song of the previous year, as voted for by APRA’s 10,000+ membership of songwriters and composers.

SNOOPZILLA

Snoop Dogg has rebranded himself as Snoopzilla as he works on 7 Days of Funk. The album is a collaboration with American, modern funk musician and producer Dam-Funk (Damon Riddick). The news comes as indie label Stones Throw Records debut the first single ‘Faden Away’ on their website. According to the release on stonesthrow.com, Snoop has relabelled himself Snoopzilla in honour of Bootsy Collins, who would sometimes go by the nickname Bootzilla. “We’re the babies of the Mothership,” says Snoop. “I’ve had funk influences in my music my whole career. Dam-Funk is cold. He’s keeping the funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him.”

8 FOOT SATIVA THE MAYFAIR

8PM, $25, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ

The undisputed kings of Kiwi metal are back with an album that will shake you to your core. Reuniting with original vocalist Justin “Jackhammer” Niessen and bass player Brent Fox, Sativa guitarist Gary Smith has patiently waited for the stars to align. Now, with guitarist Nik Davies and drummer Corey Friedlander, the line-up could not be any more devastatingly good.

TUE 29 OCT MATT CORBY THE POWERSTATION

8PM

Having spent the first four months of the year holed up in a variety of apartments and studios in LA, Matt then spent the month playing shows in cities across Australia. He’s finishing up with this headline show in Auckland. This will be the first time Matt and the band have been over to play to a Kiwi crowd

Brooklyn duo Sleigh Bells (singer Alexis Krauss and guitarist Derek Miller) have been turning bubblegum melodies and monster truck guitars into raucous, kick-ass noise rock since 2009’s Treats. Their latest offering and third studio album Bitter Rivals is no exception, with schoolyard chants that are snarkier, hooky pop vocals that are sweeter and enough raucous, shredding rock to bring the house down. Bitter Rivals sees the pair move away from the sleek and cleverly controlled chaos of Treats, embracing a more varied musicality and instrumentation; the menacing strummed acoustic guitar that opens ‘Bitter Rivals’, lightning-strike synths on ‘Sing Like A Wire’, and even adding a drummer to their live show. But perhaps the most notable change is a sharing of creative input. While there are a number of tracks with the familiar gang vocals, vicious and slightly brutal production, Krauss did a lot more writing for Bitter Rivals, especially on the hooky melodic choruses. The result? A record that showcases Krauss’s most tuneful and aggressive vocals yet - sometimes within the same song. Narrowing the divide between all-out noise and shimmering pop melody, opening title track ‘Bitter Rivals’ serves as the album’s no messing mission statement - this is pop music to soundtrack a demolition zone! ‘Young Legends’ probably has the album’s strongest melody and ‘To Hell With You’ is an airy ballad that shows off Krauss’s vocals with minimal

effects. ‘Sugarcane’ is a girl-group hit drowned in distortion, while ‘Minnie’ mixes metal with K-pop. ‘Tiger Kit’ sounds like Guns N’ Roses bumping up against Janet Jackson, with a door-die urgency that’s subtley spurred on by synth hits. Perhaps most surprising is ‘24’, proof that Sleigh Bells can sound wistful as well as brattish and bad-ass. But their tender side is by no means a sign they’ve gone soft. ‘Sing Like A Wire’ is as loud and corrosive as anything they’ve done before, and Miller’s walls of noise still block out most of Krauss’s words – though a handful of fierce, funny lines sneak through: “I’m sending gummy bears to the electric chair”. It’s a fitting conclusion to an album in which every moment of sweetness is followed by a deadly blast, making ‘Bitter Rivals’ their toughest and most focused work yet. Ren Kirk

Shit worth dRINKING

HOUSEBAR AT HOTEL DEBRETT 2 HIGH ST

Located on the swanky High Street, you don’t need to be a guest to enjoy the ambience and beauty that is Hotel DeBrett. Keeping the buildings original art decostyle décor, the Housebar is the perfect place to come for a liquid lunch or an after work drink.

REVIVAL CONTAINER BAR 94 VICTORIA ST

As the name suggests, this pop-up bar is a tribute to the city of Christchurch post-earthquake. Made from rescued materials and boasting one of the city’s largest outdoor areas, it’s a warm and inviting place to spend those lazy Friday afternoons.

MOTEL

It’s all shaping up to be some kind of horror movie – hidden in a quiet alleyway off Tory Street, there is a discrete wooden door. No, it’s not a one-way ticket to the Bates Motel, but if you ring the white doorbell and wait for the buzz (before pulling on the handle and heading upstairs) you may be in for a surprise. You’ll find the capital’s Motel bar, a one-of-a-kind location where cocktails are their specialty. If you’re looking for something (or someone) a little naughty, try strawberry blonde or for a real kick chose penicillin – a mix of scotch, lemon, honey & ginger syrup, served with a shot of a laphroaig mist.

EMINEM MAKES HIS NEW ZEALAND DEBUT WITH A MASSIVE SUMMER HIP-HOP EVENT. Eminem is an icon of a generation – and he’s coming to New Zealand for the first time in his controversial yet illustrious career. Joined by top urban stars from around the world, the Detroit rapper is bringing a new kind of festival to Australasia. Rapture 2014 is a gamechanging hip-hop event. Curated by Eminem and presented by Dainty Entertainment, it’s all about showcasing the past, present and future of the genre, with support artists handpicked by Eminem himself. Crowned the new king of the West Coast by Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre, Californian Kendrick Lamar has released thought-provoking and emotionally driven tracks, such as ‘Swimming Pools’ and ‘Poetic Justice’, off his acclaimed album good kid, m.A.A.d city. Then there’s chart-topper J Cole, who got the tick of approval from Jay-Z with his clever rhymes. Finally, to round out the line-up is Kiwi David Dallas – no longer an up-and-comer, the established hip-hop star has been getting international recognition for his hit singles ‘Rose Tint’ and ‘Buffalo Man’. Needless to say, these artists, with Eminem in the headline spot, are set to transform Auckland’s Western Springs into the ultimate summer session that’s straight out of the US. Although it’s his first time down under to New Zealand, Kiwis are no stranger to the Grammy award-winner’s hits and outspoken rhymes. Arriving in 1996 and shortly after developed an alter ego, Slim Shady, as an outlet for his emotions, The Slim Shady EP dropped in 1997. Although it dealt with everything from heavy drug use, to sex and violence, it was the beginning of a very successful career path for him, for while the raps were raw and aggressive; it was also very real for many of the 1990s generation. The EP made its way to the hands of producer Dr Dre, who would go on to become one of Eminem’s frequent collaborators and one of his closest friends. Dre suffered criticism for hiring a white rapper at a time when the last white rapper, Vanilla Ice, was a joke. He responded to the critique saying, “I don’t give a fuck if you’re purple: If you can kick it, I’m

working with you.” Their partnership spawned The Slim Shady LP, released in 1999. Although, in true Eminem style, the hit singles dealt with explicit themes, including disposing of his wife’s body on ’97 Bonnie and Clyde’ and killing his wife and her lover on ‘Guilty Conscience’, it was one of the most popular albums that year, going triple platinum. Since exploding on to the scene, Eminem has gone on to release seven equally successful albums - The Marshall Mathers LP sold 1.76 million copies in its first week, The Eminem Show poked fun at boy bands of the time and political figures, and has been certified 10-times platinum, Encore featured hits such as ‘Just Lose It’ and ‘Like Toy Soldiers’, and Relapse, Refill, Recovery and his highly-anticipated sequel, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which is due to be released on November 5, have ensured audiences have been hooked to his music for nearly 20 years. A 13-time Grammy and Oscar winner, Eminem has sold 80 million albums, scanned 120 million singles and had 2.5 billion views online. And it’s clear the Kiwis love him – he’s one of the successful chart acts of all time here, with seven of his eight albums going to number one. Still a twisted SOB, still winning critics over with his outrageous word play and unabashed celebrity critique, and still making music that speaks to everyone. Eminem is many things but in February 2014 at Western Springs he is one thing only - the biggest cross generational rap artist in the world playing a show the likes of which New Zealand has never seen before. Lose yourself? You bet. LAURA WEASER RAPTURE 2014 EMINEM, KENDRICK LAMAR, J. Stevvi Alexander is quite possibly one of the most charming artists I have ever talked with. In a broad Californian accent and calm, positive manner, she out lines her career as a singer/songwriter and performer. Alexander, who’s currently in Melbourne with Cirque Du Soleil, has been singing professionally for over 15 years and has toured with legends such as Diana Ross, Sheryl Crow, Brian McKnight, Macy Gray, Britney Spears, and Common. She’s known as the ‘Celebrity Wonder’ working with many big names and as a backup singer she’s leant her talents to many triumphs including Incubus’s ‘Morning View’, Macy Gray’s ‘The Id’ and Mike Posner’s ‘31 Minutes to Takeoff’. Plus she’s done stage time with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani, Elton John and Justin Timberlake. To name but a few. Alexander began her career in the church, where both parents are Pentecostal preachers at the Shield of Faith in Pomona, California. “Yes it’s a cliché’ of sorts. A singer starting off like this? But that’s how it started.” After completing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University and an MA in Music therapy at NYU she headed down the performance path. Presently, it’s Michael Jackson who’s keeping her ‘busy’. She’s one of three vocalists in a touring show described by the New York Post as a “lavish show, featuring the company’s trademark spectacular acrobatics and stunning visuals,” Immortal is a celebration of Jackson’s music and career. The show was created by first time Cirque-writer and Director Jamie King, who’s worked with everybody from Madonna to Rihanna, Britney Spears and Shakira, and is Music Directed by Jackson collaborator Greg Phillinganes (Bad and Dangerous concert tours). Whilst Immortal is more of a concert event it still has the flamboyance of a Cirque show. In fact, she notes, Jackson was a Cirque fan, even visiting their headquarters in Montreal. She sings a number of Jackson’s songs including ‘Just Can’t Stop Loving You’, surrounded by black and white swans. In other scenes mummies and ghouls get funky (‘Thriller’), and dangerous automaton invade the stage for ‘They Don’t Really Care About Us’, accompanied by a dangerous pole-dancing act. Given that Jackson has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, how did she feel about being tied up with this project? “Good question,” another charming smile down the phone. “You know that is sad. He does get in the news for all the wrong reasons. But it’s part of what makes up who he was. The end result is the amazing music and life that he led and this show is a celebration of that.”

The first time I met electronic artist/composer Rhian Sheehan was when I was babysitting his daughter, Niva. He’d just released his first album Paradigm Shift on the fledgling label Loop. It was constructed in the dingy spare room of his Newtown flat. Yet despite this tiny biosphere his subjects, and atmosphere, were vast - as vast as the universe itself. “There are a number of cinematic elements that creep over into my personal projects from that composition work,” he tells me over lunch at a Wellington café. “Although I haven’t fully given up on the children’s toy fetish.” Sheehan’s grinning as he recalls how he came to write much of the themes of his third album Standing in Silence around the results of a few mad hours “mucking about with the comb and workings of Niva’s wind-up music box”. The dinky metallic tune formed the basis of many of the pieces on the project. These surface again in his latest work Stories from Elsewhere. “This is a departure (from the last one, which was inspired by a trip to India). It’s a set of experimental lullabies, all quite delicate, esoteric, ethereal.” Sheehan’s teamed up with a number of players from the album including Andy Hummel (Rosie Tin Teacaddy, Woolshed Sessions), Ryan Prebble (The Nudge, Fly My Pretties), Jeff Boyle (Jakob), Steve Bremmer (The Adults), Sheehan’s wife Raashi Malik (Rhombus), Mailee Matthews (Charlie Ash), Jane Peirard, Ed Zuccolio (Harbour City Electric) and members of the Orchestra Wellington to create a rare aural and visual treat at the Wellington Opera House in early November: Stories form Elsewhere - Live. Given the gossamer quality of the music on Stories form Elsewhere, I wondered how they would translate to the stage. “We performed Standing in Silence at the Opera House and were really surprised. We didn’t expect such a large audience for this ethereal ambient music. This time there will be songs from Stories form Elsewhere mixed with other pieces, moments of quiet with moments of loudness. It’ll be more dynamic this time.” A sonic undulation I suggest. A wry smile is the reply. He explains that the musicians from the session will join him on stage, so the orchestra is really a mere extension of that, all be it a more crowded proposition!” The show will include highlights from the Stories form Elsewhere album and also multi-media work from a past collaborator Gareth moon (Pleasure Kraft). Visuals will include HD time-lapse photography of New Zealand landscapes and starscapes from Auckland photographer Joseph Michael, making this a very special event - for every compartment of your celestial cerebellum. REVIEW: NINTENDO 2DS The 2DS is the entry-level device in Nintendo’s handheld lineup, with an RRP of around $180 in New Zealand. Next is the 3DS itself, with an RRP of around $280. Finally, we have the flagship 3DS XL handheld, at around $350. All three models are completely compatible with all 3DS software and almost all DS software - none can play games that used the GBA port on the DS / DS Lite for peripherals, like Guitar Hero on Tour. The two main differences separating the 2DS from its older brothers are: 1) it doesn’t fold up like a clamshell, and 2) it doesn’t display 3D. Well, why not just buy a 3DS and switch off the slider, you ask? The target market for the 2DS is young children (for whom the 3D display of the 3DS might damage their eyes) - since you can’t accidentally turn on 3D here, there’s no risk of the kids making a potentially harmful mistake with the 2DS. The console is wedge-shaped, and is thinner at the bottom of the unit than it is at the top. The triggers at the top are quite a lot larger than those on the 3DS and the XL, they’ve also got a nice concave curve shape, helping your fingers first locate and then stay in position when using them. As far as brightness goes, I could detect no difference between the levels on the 2DS and those on other 3DS systems. Battery life seems similar to the other 3DS systems, too, at between 3.5 and 5 hours of gaming, depending on your settings. Because of the device’s flat form-factor, Nintendo have had more freedom with where the controls are placed. Rather than stick with the 3DS design, which shoves all the buttons into the bottom half, the designers have wisely slid things up quite a bit, with most of the controls now sitting alongside the top screen (or, in the case of the d-pad, in line with where the hinge would be, were the 2DS also a clamshell.) This helps contribute to the consoles overall high comfort rating; it feels nicely balanced in adult hands and doesn’t feel too heavy (or large) for kids to use, either. It’s not intended for core gamers, so the fact that it actually serves that market pretty well is an impressive feat. For younger members of the family, it’s a nobrainer. Get two of ‘em. Alan Bell

EXPO 2014

Armageddon is set to go up in flames with the V for Vendetta inspired Burning Man, standing at seven metres tall, it will burn to the ground to launch the country’s biggest gaming and fantasy and expo. Len Julian of The Pyro Company Fireworks says that V will have some tricks up his sleeve and that they “can’t wait to set him ablaze, he’s going to be spectacular.” Armageddon organiser William Geradts says, “[the burning man] is a bit rebellion and a lot of fun. Something outer-worldly almost, which fits in perfectly with the expo.” The effigy, however, is only the beginning of the expo, which is lighting up on Fri 25 Oct at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds. Armageddon is loaded with Hobbits (Billy Boyd, Pippin in Lord Of the Rings), magic (Evanna Lynch, Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter) and the zombies slayers slaughtering Governor from The Walking Dead (David Morrissey, the Governor in The Walking Dead). There are also members of the current Dr Who series, stars from Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, Rocky Horror Picture Show and the lengthy list of names from the worlds of gaming and anime. Geradts says, “we’re bringing in such a diverse range of guests this year, that we’re expecting an even wider spread of fans than usual. There truly is something for everyone.” Zombies are the new Vampires and with The Walking Dead being such a television phenomenon Geradt says they’re expecting a huge turnout for David Morrissey and Evanna Lynch, who is the first ever Harry Potter star to attend the expo. This years expo covers and intertwines magic with fantasy and gaming, film and television like none other before it. The releases of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One are monumental to the event with Call Of Duty Ghosts and World Of Tanks on display for gamers as well as some of the best gamers from New Zealand and Australia offering pointers in a live demo arena.

Geradts says, “the growth in gaming, plus massive growth in the popularity of sci-fi means this year’s Armageddon will be a truly huge event.” The main event floor will have massive displays of Wargaming, Nintendo, Nerf, Activision, Warner Brothers, Playstation, Dell and Microsoft as well as exclusive gaming previews and displays. “We’re delighted,” says Geradt, “to have so much fun stuff for people to see and try, including the most gaming and console previews at any one site in the country.” Alongside the gaming and main floors of the event there will be film screenings and live action from everything from a Pokemon screening to a live performances of anime soundtracks and live wrestling from New Zealand’s own Impact Pro Wrestling. Stars of the small and silver screens will be rubbing shoulders with their fans, available for autographs and pictures, they’ll be joined by names from the comic book industry such as Dan Slott, the writer of Spiderman and Dean Rankin, The Simpsons comic artist, as well as Kevin Eastman the co-creator of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Matt Melvin. “We’re really looking forward to having Matt Melvin,” says Geradts, “the artist of the internet comic sensation Cyanide and Happiness on board for first time.” Armageddon will be rounded out by staple events including; a Dragon Ball Z Kamehameha contest, Lasertag, Magic The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournaments, eating competitions, Cosplay parades and gaming contests. This year’s show is set to break last year’s 50,000 people, and with such a line-up and days of events, no matter which day you attend it will be a day to remember.
