A DARK TWISTED FANTASTY
OSCAR AWARD-WINNING ACTOR JAVIER BARDEM TALKS ABOUT WILD CATS, WILD WOMEN AND WORKING WITH RIDLEY SCOTT ON THE COUNSELOR.
It’s a typical day on the set of The Counselor – the European sun lights up the pool of a multi-million-euro villa in Spain. Director Ridley Scott sits behind the monitor as carefully positioned cameras capture every inch of the bikini clad partygoers. Enter the party’s host: Reiner, played by Javier Bardem. His honoured guest and the titular character, the Counselor, pulls up in a Bentley and before you know it, a live cheetah walks through the scene. Wild cats, beautiful women, an acclaimed director behind the camera (whose notable work includes Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down) and Pulitzer Prize-winner Cormac McCarthy in control of the pen – it’s moments like these that Javier realises what an “incredible” experience it has been working on the highly-anticipated flick. “When you make a film, what matters are the people you are surrounded by,” he enthuses. “I was very lucky because Ridley creates a beautiful, relaxed but challenging atmosphere to work in. He works with a lot of the same people in his crew and you can feel that because it is very comfortable. “There are many scenes in the movie where he uses that one take. And they are long scenes with just two actors. In that way it’s like theatre.” Already familiar with Cormac McCarthy’s work – Javier won an Oscar for his role as hitman Anton in the Coen Brother’s adaptation of No Country for Old Men – the actor knew an original screenplay written by the acclaimed author would make for an outstanding piece of cinema. “It’s the first original script that McCarthy has written and in the hands of Ridley, with this cast, of course you can’t say ‘no.’ It certainly didn’t take me too long to say ‘yes,’” he laughs. The all-star cast he is referring to includes Cameron Diaz as Reiner’s sociopath fiancée, Michael Fassbender starring as the titular character, Brad Pitt swanning about as a womanising middleman and Javier’s reallife wife Penelope Cruz, who plays the love interest of the Counselor. The contemporary thriller follows ruthless lawyer, known as the Counselor (Fassbender), as he is lured into the world of ruthless drug cartels with the promise of quick money. As he falls deeper into the
world of corruption, he finds the wrong moves take him further down the rabbit hole. Approached for the role of Reiner, a charismatic entrepreneur with a dark side, Javier says he immediate had an image of the character in his mind upon reading the script – something that rarely happens for the Spanish actor. Inspired by what he “saw”, he accepted the role during filming of the James Bond movie Skyfall in London, in which he played the ruthless villain Raoul Silva. “Reiner is the kind of guy who belongs to an alternative world in the movie,” Javier says of his character. “I think every character in the movie is in the middle of an accident. What happens to Reiner is like an accident and he’s the guy who doesn’t have to do too much with everything that is going on.” Javier says he built his character’s attributes around Reiner’s often-used saying: “I don’t know” or “I don’t want to know” – particularly when it comes to his relationship with his out-of-control lover Malkina. “It’s all based on a person who will always hide from the responsibilities of having the need to know and to know what to do. He doesn’t want that responsibility. I thought it was fun, for me at least, to play a person who is trying to detach himself from all responsibility in a world where you have a lot of responsibilities once you get involved in it.” It’s a far remove from Javier’s real life, recently becoming a father for the second time earlier this year with his wife of three years, but he says working within the dark world of McCarthy is easy when the characters are so rich and unbelievably twisted. “Cormac McCarthy’s work is beyond logic, it’s more poetry from the gut,” Javier says. “And you have to put your guts into it and maybe then you will understand many things that your logic won’t. It’s very dark humor, very McCarthy-esque. I think there are some great moments that are very dark but also very funny…that humor also helped me construct Reiner. He can make fun of almost anything, nothing is sacred for him.” LAURA WEASER THE COUNSELOR IN CINEMAS THU 07 NOV
