SOMETHING’S IN THE WATER

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Pink Floyd co-founder, Roger Waters, was quoted as saying, “I finished a demo of it last night.” “It’s 55 minutes long. It’s songs and theatre as well. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s couched as a radio play. It has characters who speak to each other, and it’s a quest. It’s about an old man and a young child trying to figure out why they are killing the children.” After the recent and highly successful three-year tour of, The Wall, Roger is undecided is the album will be supported with a tour. He told Rolling Stone “I’m suffering a little bit of withdrawal after ending The Wall tour.” “It’s sort of a relief to not have to go out and do that every night, but they’re such a great team. There were 180 of us together every day. That piece was very moving every night.”

Shit Worth Knowing

groove file TVNZ 2014 KELLY JOE PHELPS

TVNZ has unveiled its exciting primetime plans for New Zealand’s most watched channels in 2014.

MUSICIAN

TVNZ Head of Television, Jeff Latch, says: “There’s so much to love about our 2014 lineup. TV ONE and TV2 have a sensational new slate of programming that we hope viewers will take to their hearts.” Latch says the year ahead showcases the depth and breadth of TVNZ’s local and international programming.

Your house is on fire, what do save? I’d save the people in the house. I can replace everything else. Favourite ‘90s TV show? I didn’t watch TV in the ‘90s. Dream job as a kid? Building fences. I absolutely love hammering nails into wood. First album? Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? I’d like to work with the Forest Service. Ultimate festival line-up? Mississippi John Hurt, John Coltrane, Eddie Arnold, Doris Day, Nirvana, John Fahey, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Billie Holiday. Who would play you in a film? Gary Oldman. How do you discover new music? Recommendations from friends. Worst job you’ve had? I haven’t ever had a job I didn’t like, fortunately. Which song do you wish you wrote? Any one of the Lennon/McCartney hits. Imagine the fun of trying to figure out how to spend all that royalty money! Biggest fear? Haunted houses.

“Mark my words: 2014 is going to be a standout year for local content. TVNZ will put to air more than $100 million of local programming. We’re proud to continue to champion our nation’s stories with a strong focus on quality New Zealand drama, comedy, news and factual programming. Combined with our unparalleled access to hit international shows, our viewers will be spoilt for choice.” On TV ONE Broadchurch, Breathless, Secrets and Lies, Rake, Upper Middle Bogan, MasterChef New Zealand, Agent Anna, Offspring, The Following, House Husbands, A Place to Call Home, Mr Selfridge, Person of Interest, Scandal, and Call the Midwife. NEW TO TV2 Agents of SHIELD, Resurrection, Step Dave, Super Fun Night, Mom, Nabbed, Wentworth, Arrow, Revenge, The Big Bang Theory, Once Upon A Time, The Amazing Race Australia and My Kitchen Rules.

GREG STRAIGHT

ACTRESS

Plenty of people chat to me at Pak’nSave, but I prefer if no one talks to me in my house, because they will likely interrupt me talking to myself, or to the dog.

5PM-8PM

He first became known as an artist when working as a graphic designer. Greg decided to turn his focus back to fine arts and produced a striking range of kiwiana art prints inspired by the tiki. To celebrate a huge year, Greg will be showcasing old favourites and new works, including a range based on his artwork for Chelsea.

The best TV show around at the moment is… Community. The best place for a date night is… The French Café if you want to show your credit card who’s boss, or my couch if my husband is cooking. While I throw meals together and hope for the best, he actually bothers to take time and ensure it’s edible. I think he bought the tarragon powder.

SAT 23 NOV DUMBO

School was – pardon the expression – bloody, screaming hell in Stephen King’s 1974 novel, and Brian De Palma’s still-definitive 1977 film adaptation. The problem for Kimberley (Boys Don’t Cry) Peirce’s competent cover version is how to up the stakes? We begin, boldly enough, with crazy Mrs. White (Julianne Moore) about to plunge a pair of scissors into newborn baby Carrie, who’s possessed with telekinetic powers. But following this original opening gambit is a procession of familiar plot beats modernised and amped up to 11. When the teenaged Carrie (Chloë Grace Moretz) is tormented by her classmates during her first period, the ordeal is filmed and uploaded. When Mrs. White hits Carrie with a Bible, it’s not a shocking slap but a WWE nosebreaker. And, as in the book, Carrie’s final vengeance engulfs most of the

town, not just the school prom. Although brutally efficient and well acted, Peirce’s effort lacks character. Moretz is far too selfpossessed to convince as an ugly duckling, and her powers are too developed for her to be considered an underdog. Not only can she mind-weld (!), she seems to be auditioning for Looper 2. Moore is good, as always, and newcomer Gabriella Wilde shines as Sue Snell, the film’s conscience, but whereas De Palma’s classic combined high camp and horror to resemble a massacre on the set of Happy Days, this is more like a bad day in The O.C. It’s too knowing, too blasé – or maybe we are. Perhaps it’s as simple as this: you can’t mourn lost innocence twice. JOHN FIELDING, FLICKS.CO.NZ

NO 1 HIGH 1 HIGH ST

It looks fancy, has a great rustic décor of learned books and ceiling-high shelves, but No 1 High Street is the place to be. Lunch is served for all to afford, with a great range from burgers and sandwiches to pasta and steak. Then when the lights go down, it’s party time with top local DJs and a huge dancefloor.

INCH BAR 8 BANK ST

Give them an Inch, they’ll take a mile? Well, when it comes to service and good banter, they will. They may be small, a hole in the wall if you will, but located opposite the Botanic Gardens in the north end of Dunedin.

HAVANA BAR

Behind apartments, off the beaten track, lies a little bit of Cuba just bursting o get out. Looking more like a cute cottage than a colourful bar, Havana is a fun and funky place for socialites of all types. The bar has supported local and international musicians four nights a week for more than 10 years, and has maintained its commitment to providing free music to Wellingtonian’s ever since. From its inception, Havana Bar has created a new hum in the city by embracing all things Cuban: Its history, music, rum, famous cigars and coffee.

DIRTY WORK

JAMES MCAVOY TALKS ABOUT HIS WILDEST ROLE TO DATE IN FILTH. “I’m minging [ugly] in this movie,” James McAvoy says, bursting into a sudden laugh. “But that was all proper hard works.” Taking on a rough-as-guts role in the new movie Filth involved a little physical “deterioration” as he puts it to really embrace the character of Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson, a man who will stop at nothing to climb the career ladder and is hell bent on taking down anyone standing in his way. “I put on a bit of weight, grew a beard and drank a hell of a lot of whisky. And I rubbed the shit out of my face before every single take just to make my face look sore. And we did a put a little bit of wrinkles around my eyes too.” As the title suggests, this film is properly filthy. Based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting), the black comedydrama centres on a bipolar, bigoted, junkie cop Bruce (McAvoy), who manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure a promotion. McAvoy – typically known for playing mild-mannered, unassuming heart-throb – has morphed into a foul-mouthed, rough and tumble, for lack of a better word asshole – and he’s loving it. “I was desperate to get the part. I thought it was one of the best scripts I’d ever read and definitely in the top three I’d ever read,” he says. “When I read it I immediately knew what I wanted to do with the character. “I knew what I wanted to try and make the audience go through and feel, where I wanted them to laugh and when I wanted them to cry and when I wanted them to feel like they hated me because I knew I was going to try to manipulate them into liking me again a minute later. I knew I wanted to do all that. And it’s very rare that I get that many ideas and that much clarity after one reading but I did.” Casting McAvoy for the role seemed like an odd choice, even to director and screenwriter Jon S Baird, who says, “I’d naively assumed that James probably had a gentle kind of upbringing.” He quickly found out that the actor’s “tough Glaswegian background” gave him a real insight into the character.

grooveguide.co.nz

“A shiver raced up my spine [when he told me about his past]. McAvoy’s intelligence, humour and edge, but more importantly his comprehension of mental illness, immediately put him in a league of his own, and the hunt for [the character] Bruce Robertson had come to an end.” Often confronting and generally out to shock, there is no shortage of debauchery in Filth and on the back of such roles as Starter for 10, X-Men: First Class and Wanted, some of the material was certainly a surprise for McAvoy. “On the second day of the shoot there was a scene that I had no problem with on the page and then when I had to do it I felt sick. It’s a scene where Bruce blackmails a 15 year-old girl to give him a blowjob. But that was the only time, actually. The rest of [the film’s content] I felt fairly at home with (laughs). And by the way, the actress in that scene was 21 years old at the time.” In fact, he found Bruce one of the easiest roles to play in terms of knowing where to go with the character, from our first meeting of Bruce as a truly unlikeable individual, to finding some empathy in the emotional breakdown he begins to experience. “The script was so strong and it was a case of coming into work, having a quick chat about it and going, ‘Are we all in the same place? Right, let’s do it.’ And then it was a case of hitting it as hard as possible to see how well we could do this amazing material justice. And that’s so rare. It’s really only happened to me on Atonement. And when it does happen it’s an incredible feeling because you then get to really work and act. “It was an absolute joy. It was a lot of effort and it took an enormous amount of energy to play this part and I’m not saying that it’s an amazing performance – people can decide that for themselves – but the ease with which my performance came out was surprising for me because I thought it was going to take a lot more to find Bruce but that’s testament to a great script.” LAURA WEASER IN CINEMAS THU 21 NOV

GTA V “BEACH BUM” UPDATE OUT THIS WEEK

Grand Theft Auto Online’s “Beach Bum Pack”, which was revealed in October, is releasing this week developers Rockstar have revealed. The update, which is scheduled to hit on Wednesday in New Zealand, adds two new weapons, four vehicles (for land and sea, according to the announcement), new jobs, and new customization options. New “jobs” (the game’s equivalent of quests) include an off-road race event called Grass Route II, a beach-front survival mode set on the pier, and parachuting through checkpoints - something which, according to Rockstar, players with skills will be able to complete a large portion of before they even open their chutes. Grand Theft Auto Online - the multiplayer component of the recently released Grand Theft Auto V - had a challenging start when it first became available at the beginning of October, but reports suggest that the game is now largely playable and the distribution of online currency - as a way of apologizing for the launch problems - has been embraced by fans.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE XBOX ONE The Xbox One promises to pack a powerful punch - sure, on paper, the PS4 has a performance advantage, but if we’ve learnt anything in recent years, including the rise of Indie games, it’s that pure horsepower isn’t everything when it comes to designing masterful videogames. Microsoft’s new console is also vying for the desirable position of top dog in your entertainment unit. Television and streaming media are being pushed in a big way - the Xbox One is hoping to revolutionise the way we watch TV, by using the console’s power to allow you to snap between TV, media, and gaming, or do two things at once. Not only that but the Xbox One now sports a Blu-Ray player - itself a must-have device for any serious media box.

SONY HOPE TO AVOID A PS4 GAME DROUGHT

It’s not unusual for a new console to release amidst hype and fanfare, with an impressive list of launch titles, and then have little in the way of new software for the next few months. However, Sony are working to ensure that the PlayStation 4 console doesn’t face such a drought. Sony’s Scott Rohde has stated that the new console’s first few months will see “a pretty decent flow, especially from that small indie scene, both internally and through third-party indie games.” A cursory glance at the PS4 release schedule suggests something of a lack of bigname titles for early next year, but this is at least in part due to many upcoming games not yet having received a solid release date. On that front, Rohde said that a release date for Infamous: Second Son and more information about The Order: 1886 are coming soon. Rohde also emphasised Sony’s commitment to indie games, saying he expects to exceed the goal of having a new, exclusive indie title every month. “I love the fact that, because we’ve embraced indie, there’s a huge area of games that supplement that retail launch lineup. I really do think that’s a good thing, that you have a flow.” The PlayStation 4 - which is now available in the United States - releases in New Zealand on Fri 29 Nov.

Microsoft is really throwing their weight behind Xbox Live next generation, ensuring that the Xbox One will have immense server-side support. This “Cloud” will allow gamers to store their content and developers to utilise for dedicated servers and extra processing. An example of the way in which the Cloud can enhance games, according to Microsoft, can be found in Forza Motorsport 5’s ‘Drivatars’ - effectively a merge of gamer’s personal racing styles with that of an AI, this should result in realistic driving behaviours that, in theory, will make the AI come truly to life when you connect to Xbox Live. The new Kinect - a camera-based controller - is now so advanced that it can read your heart rate, facial expressions, and if whether you’ve passed the controller to another player. You can log in just by looking at it, and your console can read stored-value “points” cards just by holding them up to the Kinect. There’s also a host of games coming for the thing, of course, with high-profile launch games like Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Forza 5, and Killer Instinct being joined by a host of cross-platform games straight away, and then followed next year by exclusives like Titanfall and Project Spark. The future is not only bright for the Xbox One, it’s also now; Microsoft’s new console launches in New Zealand - the first country in the world to get the console - on Fri 22 Nov. Joel Lauterbach

N A E MAK I N CA ? N O I T A V R E S OB C O MEDIAN MICHAEL MCINTYRE TAN , W O RKING O TALK S FAKE U T AND R U S S ELL CR O WE .

In a 20-minute conversation with British comedian Michael McIntyre, you can talk about everything and nothing at all. For a man who specialises in observational humour, he’s able to turn the simplest questions or the smallest things into what seems like a rambling yarn, but is actually a cleverly calculated comedic style. “How’s the weather in New Zealand? I’m keen to get a tan,” he opens with, very matter-of-factly. Arriving on our shores at the end of November, in a month where we can experience four seasons in one day, he obviously knows little about our country. And since it is his first time here, it’s understandable. But he’s not totally clueless – “I know about the Crowes… Martin, Jeff and of course, Russell. I know about Lord of the Rings, but I didn’t make it through all of them.” So he’s well-versed in our culture, clearly. It’s late Sunday night in the UK, when the father of two says he’s not at his funniest. It’s obviously not true – although he’s very “serious” about getting a brown bronzed look. “I only really look good with a tan. I don’t ever look very good: It’s not my thing. But if I have a tan? Oh, I go into another realm. I was hoping to pick one up. I did years ago – as a teen – get involved in fake tan and it just didn’t work for me. Twenty years ago you would just put something on that stunk, smelly lotion, that would just go and streak. The smell thing, they need to tackle that.” Despite this being our first introduction to the 37-year-old, the rest of the globe is already very familiar with the man who last year was reportedly the highest-grossing comedian in the world. His shows are electric with wildly-exaggerated hand gestures, frantic strutting up and down the stage, and a slightly effeminate voice that often gives way to accent impersonations. As well as appearing on top UK shows, including Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie to You? and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Michael began hosting his own show, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, which ran for two years with great success. But he’s also a prolific touring talent, having travelled across the UK and Europe on numerous occasions and recently making a trip to South Africa. Coming to New Zealand is something he is very excited about – even if he believes the trip was organised by his manager with ulterior motives.

“I think basically my manager wanted to go to the Ashes and he told me that there was a huge following down under,” Michael says with a laugh. “But I like being on stage, then after it’s over I worry about the next one, to be honest. It’s all quite stressful. Travelling abroad is quite fun, but I have to make sure I am on form for the show. This will be a whole new, massive trip. I’ve never come this far for so long to play to a place I know nothing about.” Coming so far also involves leaving behind his wife Kitty and their two young sons, Lucas and Oscar, who he often takes on tour across the UK during school holidays – although he admits it can be hard when “I am sleeping in the afternoons and doing the show at night”. It’s obvious playing such high energy shows, particularly if it’s on a long run, can take a physical toll on the comedian, and that’s why fitness is an important part of his preparation – if fitness involved eating. “I’ve been doing crunches through this conversation. Well, not the whole time, I jumped rope for a few minutes,” he says deadpan. “I work out 24 hours a day, that’s pretty much it, I only eat protein shakes... and I put them in difficult places so I have to climb up or put them under something heavy. A classic example of Michael McIntyre at his best, he can no longer keep his cool and breaks into a fit of undignified giggles, before turning on the seriousness for a brief second. “But yes, it does get exhausting, also I have that funny microphone that sticks out of my head, so if I get out of breath, it’s quite hard to hide it when there’s a mic literally in your mouth like a toothbrush. “I remember going through a sound dubbing thing to make myself sound fitter because there was so much heavy breathing going on, so many sound mixers. I tell you it is easier than going to the gym.” Leaving me to talk to “some bloke from Adelaide radio”, Michael is a surprising bundle of energy for a late Sunday night, and ending with “I like talking to you the most”, I look forward to seeing what he has to offer Kiwi fans at Vector Arena.
