Blur have pulled out of next years Big Day Out Festival for Australia and New Zealand. In a statement released via their facebook page they said “Devastated to report that Blur won’t be performing at BDO in 2014. It’s a shock that it has come to this. Only eight weeks to go, the band feels that with the constantly shifting goalposts and challenging conditions of the organisers, and want to be clear to Blur fans that they won’t be there, but they’ve let us down and let everyone else down too.” No word has been given from NZ BDO promoters yet.

#WORD OF THE YEAR

The Oxford Dictionaries has named its Word of the Year for 2013: “selfie.” The word was first used in 2002 in an Australian online forum and first appeared as a hasthtag, #selfie, on Flickr in 2004. Now, everyone from the Pope to Kim Kardashian to the Mars Rover has taken a selfie.

SLIDESHOW

Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown and Run the Jewels will be making their way down to Wellington for the king of all sideshows. This mighty fine crew is arguably some of the hottest rappers to storm the streets this year.

THE VOICES

Lionel Richie and John Farnham will perform in a co-headlining tour across New Zealand in March 2014, performing their sets with their own band and singers. Promoter Paul Dainty said, “I am always thrilled when a superstar wants to tour. But when two legends agree to take their magic on the road together. BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE

Winona Ryder has hinted she will be starring in a Beetlejuice sequel. The 42-year-old star looks set to appear in a follow-up to the 1988 film - in which she played Lydia Deetz, a teenager who can see a ghost couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) and befriends them. “I’m kind of sworn to secrecy, but it sounds like it might be happening. It’s not a remake, it’s 27 years later.” Tim Burton directed the original fantasy horror film and he is involved in the plans for the sequel as well.

What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? La Ragazza del Fuoco (The Hunger Games). I have to watch it in Italian so it’s just as well I’ve read the book. I also am kind of excited about The Hobbit, which I want to see in The Embassy while I’m here for Messiah.

Breakthrough Artist of the Year Lorde - The Love Club EP

Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? Ooh, depends what city I’m in. At home, normally tucked into some delicious Tuscan meal in a country trattoria. In Wellington? On Cuba Street, shopping and drinking the finest coffee in the world. Consuming, generally.

Best Pop Album Jamie McDell - Six Strings and a Sailboat

Your fantasy spirit animal is… I’m a Pisces, but I’m scared of the deep sea so maybe a unicorn dolphin that can fly and doesn’t spend all his life in the scary dark ocean. The best TV show around at the moment is… Just getting stuck into The Wire a few years late, I tend to watch box sets as Italian TV is challenging. Loved Dexter. The best place for a date night is… In Wellington? I’m always worried about my voice for the next performance so for me it needs to be not too noisy. Which is difficult to find in New Zealand. Pravda for a special occasion. Chow for any night. Where I live? Our favourite place is this cool random Irish bar in the middle of the country. It’s 90% of the time mysteriously closed but on the random chance you arrive to find it open, there are quality times to be had.

Best Rock Album Villainy - Mode. Set. Clear.

People say you look like… Once someone thought I looked like Isla Fisher, another friend said Nicole Kidman. Both of which are grossly generous, but I’ll take that. What generic current affair has your blood boiled? So many, I’m a frequent boiler. The Russian anti-gay policy. The Chinese being allowed on the human rights council. The lack of preparation for global warming; seemingly out-of-control, irresponsible use of fossil fuels. In New Zealand, the sale of our assets. The lack of support for unemployed women raising children alone.

OUT NOW

By now you know all about how Bowie came out of a ten year hibernation to put out his 24th studio album The Next Day back in March, following a campaign of little fanfare or marketing. Bowie just dropped the music on iTunes, unannounced. For us we had no reference point. There was no character this time, no expectations - no Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke or Tin Machine Man. The subversive cover art was a mirrored adaptation of Bowie’s ‘77 album, Heroes by Jonathan Barnbrook, who also did Heathen and Reality, with the obscuration being a connotation of “forgetting or obliterating the past”. A perfect choice as Bowie’s often accused of being a cultural magpie, even of his own. But somehow this all seemed worthy of the man’s age time and place. ‘The Stars (are out tonight)’ is one of my particular favourites, and the hints that original Starman is still orbiting out there somewhere. ‘Where Are We Now?’ ‘The Next Day,’ ‘Valentine’s Day,’ are equally good pop tunes that live in the present but could be recorded at any time in the last decade. Critics were quick to hash tag The Next Day as album four in the “Berlin Trilogy” - Low, Heroes, and Lodger. However, I just can’t see it. The songs are more upbeat, to begin with and varied. The Next Day Extra builds on that, an expanded collector’s edition, a 3-disc package with the original album, a DVD of the album’s music videos, and a 10-track bonus CD with five previously unreleased songs and two new remixes. One of these is ‘God

Bless The Girl’, which had previously only been available on the Japanese release. It slowly builds up and wraps you like a warm blanket, its verses rolling along like a well maintained vehicle and gospel chorus an almost a welcome back to the projects of the 80’s (‘Young Americans’ or ‘Underground’ in particular). “I’ve got major questions/About the Lord above/About Satan below/About the way we love,” Bowie ponders on ‘The Informer’, but what’s he getting to? This one should build, but it doesn’t. Alas, his own indulgence for melancholy can be his Achilles’ heel sometimes. ‘Atomica’ is definitely something that should have been on the original album. It rocks along, poking fun at the popstar concept as only Bowie could. It’s like he’s re-imagined himself as Aladdin Sane, analysing Ziggy Stardust and writing up the notes as a tut-tutting elder version of Bowie today. Arcade Fire producer James Murphy’s ten min remix of ‘Love is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix)’ is pretty gnatty. It has signature elements from his time in LCD Soundsystem. Check out the video. If you remember the David Lynch style stuff shot for Barry Adamson, then this is a pretty good approximation and the return of the insane clown posse is a temptation to good to miss. Apparently it was shot and edited by Bowie in three days and echoes ‘Ashes to Ashes.’ Bowie pretty much invented the modern concept video, so really this is no surprise. TIM GRUAR

Daniel Radcliffe sheds his Harry Potter namesake, starring as the great poet Allen Ginsberg in this 1944 crime drama. The young Ginsberg’s life is turned upside down when he sets eyes on Lucien Carr. Carr opens Ginsberg up to a bohemian world and introduces him to Burroughs and Kerouac.

GETTING ON SOHO, 8.30PM

From Mark V Olsen and Will Scheffer (creators of Big Love), Getting On is a new offbeat workplace comedy adapted from the BBC series of the same name (which was named best television show of the year by The Telegraph). It takes an off-kilter look at the femalegeriatric wing of a beleaguered California hospital.

SAT 30 NOV DEXTER – S8 SOHO, 12.30PM

It’s been six months since LaGuerta’s murder – and Dexter is still managing life as a dad, brother, and serial killer. Debra now works as a PI for a private firm and Batista has replaced her as Lieutenant. Meanwhile, Miami Metro investigates the murder of a man who has had pieces of his brain removed.

THE WORDS SKY MOVIES EXTRA, 8.30PM

DIRECTED BY FRANCIS LAWRENCE STARRING JENNIFER LAWRENCE, JOSH HUTCHERSON, LIAM HEMSWORTH

Revisiting the dystopian setting of last year’s The Hunger Games, Catching Fire makes even more of Jennifer Lawrence’s rising star than its precursor. Like her character Katniss, the actress continues to reveal hidden strengths both when this sequel demands more range in her performance and when she’s simply required to cover familiar ground.

or subtext. That’s tribute to fresh incoming director Francis Lawrence, who displays a little more flair and maturity in tone than his displaced predecessor, and screenwriter Michael Arndt, whose forced departure from the upcoming Star Wars sequel is disappointing given the efficient, effective script on offer here.

Throughout Catching Fire there’s a much stronger sense of a tangible world being built than in The Hunger Games, not so much expanded as enriched and made more plausible. Donald Sutherland and Philip Seymour Hoffman offer suitable menace and the more outlandish supporting cast, chiefly Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks, themselves serve up believable (dare I say nuanced) performances.

For all this, it’s hard to shake the sense of déjà vu as the film’s narrative follows the trajectory of The Hunger Games a little too closely. Despite Katniss being more damaged and seeing things more cynically, events play out in familiar fashion, even if the motives and stakes differ. While Catching Fire is eminently watchable it lacks the surprise factor of the earlier film even while serving as a bridge to its own anything-couldhappen sequels, cruelly teased in a cliffhanger ending.

The public revolt that simmers along in the background and the way it is dealt with by Panem’s rulers add further depth and context, thankfully without drowning the film in allegory

TUE 03 DEC EYES WIDE SHUT SKY MOVIES CLASSICS, 8.30PM

The Words follows young writer Rory Jansen, who finally achieves long-sought-after literary success after publishing the next great American novel. There’s only one catch – he didn’t write it. As the past comes back to haunt him, Jansen is forced to confront the price of his actions.

Cruise and Kidman star as a married couple entangled in an intricate web of jealousy and sexual obsession in Stanley Kubrick’s final cinematic showcase. BUZZ OSBORNE – MELVINS ICONIC AMERICAN EXPERIMENTAL rock band Melvins have spent a thirty year career in constant motion, keeping an eye on the future without relying on their expansive legacy to further their output. Throughout 2013 they have already released a covers album titled Everybody Loves Sausages and their recently released studio album Tres Cabrones, and are currently working on a follow-up LP of original material. Speaking with singer, guitarist and band leader Buzz (King Buzzo) Osborne while he rehearses in Los Angeles for the New Zealand leg of their thirtieth anniversary tour, he shares some key aspects of their longevity and gives an insight into the dedicated work ethic which has kept the Melvins ticking. “Keep your feet moving, try to do something that challenges you and the listener, only make music that you think is good and apologise for nothing,” says the front man. “I don’t see any reason why bands can’t work all the time, especially with live music and recording records. I don’t understand what takes them so long, I don’t get it. Who knows, I can only speak for myself. But I think of it [as] more and more. I do it the way that I would appreciate the other bands doing it.” Released in November, the Melvins’ 19th studio album Tres Cabrones sees a reunion with original drummer Mike Dillard, with Dale Crover (who replaced Dillard in 1984) taking up the bass for the album’s recording. It is the closest version of the original Melvins 1983 line up, though Osborne states that it is a collection of completely modern songs made with the sole intention to “write a cool record”. “I didn’t have any hyper motivations other than - if this is the line up of the band, how would we write songs now? I try to write and record songs that would sound the way that we do now, with that line-up. It’s not like a ‘back to the good ole days’ [record], at all.” Nine of the twelve songs have previously appeared on rare and extremely limited vinyl and internet-only releases, and Tres Cabrones marks their worldwide debut as contemporary tracks. While talking about the history of the collection, Osborne keenly clarifies any misconceptions

22

|

GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

that fans may have over their place on the record. “They’re not revamped versions, they’re new versions, or they’re the same versions they ever were. A couple of them came out on internetonly releases, one of them came out on a hyper limited - which means 400 vinyl [releases] - compilation, and four songs came out on 500 vinyl’s.” “For someone to say - ‘oh they’ve already been out before’ - that’s just crazy. None of that stuff even went to the store, ya know?” By its very release, Tres Cabrones (which translates to ‘three dumbasses’ in Spanish) is a mixture of classic and current Melvins and touches on the many sonic traits of their back catalogue; from the experimental rock and the heavy sludge, to the weird and comical side ever underlying their work, and has been labelled the best Melvins record by Osborne’s wife due to its simplicity (“and she’s not one to hold back with what she thinks.”) Of course, the studio is only one half of the Melvins’ work environment. As a live force Osborne and co. have built a reputation as one of the loudest and dedicated bands in the world today, hitting a mile stone achievement with 51 shows in 51 states over 51 days in 2012. However he is quick to explain that the live and studio mediums are very different and can’t be approached in the same manner. “The live experience is a roll of the dice, it’s very human [because] you have the feedback from the audience. The studio experience is more like you’re under a microscope. Sometimes live I don’t feel like I played very well but then someone from the audience will say ‘it was great’, or vice versa,” says Osborne. It’s all part of the package as a musician and King Buzzo is more than happy playing the role, “for better or worse.” “It’s art, it’s an art form. Part art form, part car-salesman. One of the two, and Andy Warhol all mixed together.” JAMES MANNING SEE THEM LIVE: MELVINS WED 04 DEC THE POWERSTATION, AUCKLAND

2013 VODAFONE NEW ZEALAND MUSIC AWARDS THERE’S A BUZZ in the air. Zombies are stumbling around hunting for brains and posing for pictures. Tidal waves of fevered cheers are bouncing around Vector Arena’s glass exterior. Stan Walker is breaking out random dance moves on unsuspecting fans. It can mean only one thing. The sun blazed relentlessly down on Vector’s red carpet on Thu 21 Nov evening as the 48th Annual Vodafone NZ Music Awards got underway. Bands, artists and producers from across the country (obligatory colourful entourages in tow) piled into the 12,000-seat arena for a night that celebrated the past twelve months of NZ music in all its diversity, originality and eccentricity. The evening’s festivities kicked off with a live performance by Devonport teenager turned international synthpop sensation Lorde, who performed a triumphant homecoming rendition of her ubiquitous single ‘Royals’ to a delirious crowd. Hosting duties were carried out with abundant charm by Shannon Ryan and Stan Walker (kitted out in an array of his trademark threads) and the jovial back-and-forths between the charismatic pair lent a laid-back tone to the evening (a highlight of which involved Walker

pretty much presenting the Radio Airplay award to himself, emotional and slightly confusing moment for everyone involved). Flight of the Conchords’ Brett McKenzie accepted the award for Highest Selling Single for their charity track ‘Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)’, making sure to give a shout out to the Auckland and Wellington school kids who provided the song’s quirky lyrical content. Christchurch electronica veterans Shapeshifter walked away with two awards – Best Group and Best Electronica Album for their fifth studio album Delta. If there had been an award for best footwear the boisterous drum ‘n bass pioneers would have easily nailed that one too. Wellington reggae raconteurs Fat Freddy’s Drop took away the Tui for Best Roots Album for their third studio album, the critically acclaimed Blackbird. But in the end the night went to two young female artists who have achieved unparalleled success in their respective genres both domestically and abroad – Samoan-Indian Kiwi doowop queen Aaradhna and that Devonport teenager everyone keeps talking about. After cleaning up at the Pacific Music Awards in May, Aaradhna

added to her growing award haul by taking home three Tuis on Thursday – for Best Female Solo Artist, Best Urban / Hip-hop Album and the coveted Album of the Year for her album Treble & Reverb. Her third full-length, the album charted across the globe on the back of infectious platinumselling single ‘Wake Up’ (which she performed live accompanied by a posse of pyjama-sporting minions), and earlier this year the soulful songstress signed a multialbum deal with American label Republic Records (also home to kiwi synth-rock collective The Naked and Famous) which should provide plenty of opportunity for global in the coming year. After taking time out to judge her school talent contest last week, Ella Yelich-O’Connor returned to the musical feeding frenzy which has been surrounding her alterego Lorde for some time now, and walked away with four Tuis. The seventeen year-old nabbed Single of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, International Achievement Award and the People’s Choice Award. She may well have increased that

number had her debut full length Pure Heroine been released in time to be considered for this year’s awards. After a few months which have included a number one single in the states, a publishing deal reported to be worth around $3million and an intimate performance for the likes of David Bowie and Sofia Coppola, this was a jubilant return home for the unassuming seventeen-year-old. Other artists who walked away with awards include Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Villainy, Maisey Rika, Jamie McDell, Lawrence Arabia and Shona Laing, who was honoured with the Legacy award as well as a special tribute performed by Ruby Frost. Other live highlights included Iva Lankum, Jamie McDell, Titanium as well as the final song by Mr. Stan Walker who closed the show in his usual charismatic style. Overall a great night which reflected the energy and passion of the ever-vibrant kiwi music scene. DAVID KEARNEY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ALEXANDER HALLAG – SHHH THE MUSIC IS TALKING

FINAL FANTASY X | X-2 REMASTER HD DATED

Square Enix have announced the release date for two upcoming Final Fantasy remakes. Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD, which bundles both games together on one disk, will release Thu 20 Mar, 2014 for PlayStation 3. Remakes for Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 were originally revealed in 2011, for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation Vita versions of the game, which are expected to be available separately as digital downloads, have not yet been dated; information regarding the Vita games (specifically, “full details” and “release timing”) will be revealed at a later date. The PS3 version will be available in both “standard” and “limited edition” variants, the latter of which also includes a 48-page art book, which is exclusive to the Australia / New Zealand (ANZ) region according to the announcement.

KILLER INSTINCT XBOX ONE (EXCLUSIVE) Killer Instinct, if you missed the memo, is both a brand new one-on-one fighting game and a reboot of the Killer Instinct franchise. Never heard of it? That’s not that surprising, really, given the last game in the series - Killer Instinct Gold released for the Nintendo 64 - in 1996. Killer Instinct was a real crowd-pleaser in the arcades, thanks to its ludicrously over-the-top combos. A skilled player could execute a near-endless stream of attacks, all of which were linked together and very difficult for an opponent to break out of. The new Killer Instinct is download only and includes access (by default) to just one character. Additional characters can be bought separately, or you can buy combo packs; the “Ultra Combo” includes all six launch characters, two more that will be released post launch, and some extra perks - including an emulated copy of the original Killer Instinct arcade machine.

SENNHEISER ANNOUNCE TWO NEW GAMING HEADSETS

Sennheiser have announced two new gaming headsets, both of which are aimed at the high end of the market. The G4ME ONE, priced at $419.95, and the G4ME ZERO, which retails for $449.95, should start appearing in local retailers from today. In addition, Sennheiser have announced a partnership with Hitman developers Io Interactive, which the company describes as a “perfect match of game creation and gameplay experience.” Io are using Sennheiser equipment when developing and recording game sound, which - according to Sennheiser - “ensures that gamers using Sennheiser gaming headsets will get an authentic sound experience that’s optimized to be exactly as the developers intended.” “Sennheiser equipment makes our games sound better - both for us and the gamer,” suggested Frans Galschiøt Quaade - the lead sound designer at Io Interactive. “Not only are these great gaming headsets for both producing and playing games, but using Sennheiser equipment during development ensures a great and consistent audio experience all the way from the production to end consumer.”

The closest thing to an arcade-like gameplay option is the endless “survival” mode, in which you go up against foe after foe until you eventually fall. Other fun stuff includes a deep (and I mean deep) training mode, which exposes many of the game’s core systems to detailed scrutiny, and - of course - support for duking it out with friends and enemies - both online and on the couch. Combat is where Killer Instinct truly excels. Somehow it manages to remain incredibly similar in feel to the original, yet be about 2.4 bazillion times faster, tightly balanced, and eerily similar to Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter (sitting somewhere about the middle in terms of technical execution and flashy movesets, if you like.) I had a lot of fun with it and was able to see significant improvement in my technique, both from exploring the Dojo (training mode) and observing fellow reviewer Matthew’s prowess in matches (he really is much better than I am.) If you’re looking for a fighting game that skimps on story but delivers tournament-ready credentials, look no further. Killer Instinct is making a brash play at the top table and, as far as we can tell, it’s got the goods. ALAN BELL

ENCORE

ROBERT DELONG “IT DESCRIBES EVERYTHING… moving, life, dance!” Just Movement, released on Glassnote Records in February this year, is the debut album from the one-man futuristic dance party master, Los Angeleno-via-Seattle beats-maker Robert DeLong. His music blends techno beats with live percussion and is structured around conventional song writing, with a twist. The sound has been described by Wired Magazine as a merger of “electronic dance music, alt rock, and vocals into tracks that are poppy enough to make you move but dissonant enough to be interesting.” On the line from Tampa Bay, where he’s just stepped out into the street to chat, DeLong gives me the run down on his short but explosive career. He can’t believe it. One minute he’s messing around in his bedroom, the next he’s talking to journalists outside a stadium in Florida, where he’s now on tour supporting 21 Pilots. “21 Pilots is a good match with my act. It’s a two piece instruments and techno kit. Like me, they mix the real stuff and the toys.” Indeed, DeLong brings people to their feet in his live acts with the help of his unique stage set up featuring a full drum kit, MPC and various laptops and a set of game controllers connected to MIDI interfaces. “I’ve hooked up each controller so when I wave it around, like my Wii controller, it plays a loop or beat. It makes the whole thing more visceral.” He explains that everything on stage serves a purpose – like the key strokes or pixel references in a game the controller which relates to a specific action or sound “like guitar strumming or drums hit by a stick.” DeLong started off as the geeky 10-year-old kid, playing jazz drums at school, an “extension of (his musician) father.” But he quickly got into computer music and learned to blend his kit with the sounds. “I went to house parties and realised that was making music with drums which are, or can be, the lead instrument in dance music. I wanted to incorporate that into what was doing. Plus, it’s exciting on stage, to see me playing and not twiddling knobs behind the screen. I was messing around with programmes and the weird sounds I could make. I often

just create a groove and follow it to its natural ending. If it works, it becomes a song. If not, well maybe a commercial jingle? Music comes first, then the lyrics.” Early influences were Bowie and The Talking Heads. DeLong is still a big fan of David Byrne’s all encompassing approach to world music, especially the beats. He also mentions the production on the Beatles’ Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Rights to Children as massive influences. That all became the inspiration for his sound today, culminating in Just Movement - a dazzling and highly original amalgam of dance beats, pop hooks and thought provoking queries. It will no doubt supply your cerebral anthem for 2013. “The first song ‘Just Movement’ is a sort of thesis statement for my philosophy. I talk about evolution and how the universe is really a collection of small particles all rubbing against each other…” If you watch his videos, you’ll be struck by the recurring ‘X’ theme - a distinctive orange logo that appears on clothing, album cover and every thing. “It doesn’t really mean anything. My girlfriend started marking my headphones and gear when I started out, to identify me as different and so I wouldn’t lose it. Then the theme just grew from that. It’s nothing and it’s me.” ‘Me’ is the philosophy and the sentiment behind Just Movement’s second track, ‘Global Concepts’, which explores his own contribution. It’s about his place in the world, his purpose, what it all amounts to. He finds himself in a position and asks: “Did I leave myself to chance or did I make you fucking Dance?” Find out Wed 04 Dec at Galatos, with support from Please Please, when he will bring his show to Auckland. Until then refrain from reconfiguring the PlayStation controllers. TIM GRUAR SEE HIM LIVE: ROBERT DELONG WED 04 DEC GALATOS, AUCKLAND
