READING
Rain, wind and trendy beanies, finally, summer is here! Possibly, the calendar says so anyway. In any case, despite this turbulent weather, we can only hope that this summer ensues like the ones before it, in liver failure and sun burn. Ahh, signs of a summer well spent! Other signs include having the bottom half of all your jeans cut off, watching your friends drown in mosh pits at music festivals and of course, eating sand. And, as always, you know its summer when you actually have time to sit down and read a book without being distracted, unless you’re at a music festival and there is sand in your mouth. Here is a list of books that should be read over the summer, when you have a little bit of extra time to soak them all up. Admittedly, I am very slow on the uptake, and most of these books were published prior to 2013 aka The Year of Amanda Bynes.
MR NICE HOWARD MARKS During the mid-1980s Howard Marks had forty three aliases, eighty nine phone lines and owned twenty five companies throughout the world. At the height of his career he was smuggling consignments of up to thirty tons of marijuana, and had contact with organisations as diverse as MI6, the CIA, the IRA and the Mafia. Written by the man himself, Mr Nice is a terrifying and fascinating story told with humour. A perfect book to read on the beach to make you appreciate the fact that you’re not in prison or a drug smuggler (because sometimes we need reminding).
THE BOOK THIEF MARKUS ZUSAK The Book Thief is one of those novels that none of your friends will have because they have all recommended it and given it away to someone else. It’s like trying to borrow The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from someone, it’s impossible. In saying that, there is always this thing called the Internet and when you do eventually get a copy, The Book Thief is well worth the read. Narrated by Death, The Book Thief tells the story of a young girl in Nazi Germany who decides to hide a Jewish man in her basement, where they eventually bond over books and secrets.
SNEAKY PEOPLE THOMAS BERGER The time is the 1930s. Buddy Sandifer, owner of a used-car lot and father of a fifteen-year-old son with a penchant for sex manuals, is in a surly mood and wants to murder his wife. A refreshing crime novel filled with secrets, scandal and surprisingly, a lot of wit. Sneaky People is a great book to read around Christmas time when you feel like murdering your own family.
LIFE AFTER LIFE KATE ATKINSON During a snowstorm in England in 1910, a baby is born and dies before she can take her first breath. During a snowstorm in England in 1910, the same baby is born and lives to tell the tale. Life after Life tells the story of Ursula Todd, a young girl who can relive events again and again. Written with charm and sensitivity, this novel takes the reader through two world wars and various life shattering events, teaching readers that there is always warmth in life’s coldest moments.
MRS DALLOWAY VIRGINIA WOOLF Also set in the early 20th century, Mrs Dalloway explores a day in the life of a highsociety, English woman named Mrs Dalloway. Even though it’s written over the period of one day, the reader is taken on an intense journey into the mind of Mrs Dalloway as she prepares for a party that evening. Mrs Dalloway explores themes such as feminism, homosexuality and mental illness, and it’s a testament to Virginia Woolf’s writing that she manages to explore such themes in just one day of the main characters life.
THE SHADOW OF THE WIND CARLOS RUIZ ZAFÓN It’s 1945 and a ten-year-old boy named Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the ‘Cemetery of Forgotten Books’, an obscure labyrinth filled with forgotten or lost titles. Daniel picks out a novel named The Shadow of the Wind and it soon becomes his most valuable treasure. However, as Daniel grows up, he finds that there are several people inordinately interested in the book and its writer. What first started out as an innocent visit to the ‘Cemetery of Forgotten Books’ soon turns into a race to find out the truth about the novel and it’s writer.
SHANTARAM GREGORY DAVID ROBERTS. Shantaram is a semi-autobiographical book written by Australian writer and convict, Gregory David Roberts. However, don’t be fooled into thinking this is just your regular autobiography about prison life. After robbing stores with a fake gun, Roberts was sentenced to nineteen years in a high security prison in Melbourne. He escaped, ran away to India and spent eight fugitive years in Bombay, where he went from being a slum dweller to a high rolling member of the Bombay Mafia. He also fought in Afghanistan and became a Bollywood movie actor during this time as well. These things happen to the best of us. As you read this in the sun with a cold beer in your hand, India will never feel so real. Unless you’ve actually been to India, obviously. ODETTE TREADWELL

It’s chef Al Brown’s place and reflects perfectly his attitude towards food: In season, well-cooked and presented, to be enjoyed with friends. Most of the cooking is done with charcoal or hard wood so there’s succulence to the flavours. Order a selection of small plates and pass them round. Then there’s the wine list – small, but perfectly formed, with many of Al’s top picks. Like most places in Auckland, there is no reservations, but when you get in there, it’s worth and there’s little wait time for your grub. If seafood is your thing, there’s oysters and squid to satisfy, or sliders with lemon mayo and watercress.
