Liam Finn will return this year with his third studio album. Dubbed The Nihilist, the 12-track LP is set for a Fri 04 Apr release via Liberation Music in NZ. Finn recorded the follow-up to 2011’s FOMO in a Brooklyn studio overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The Nihilist may not arrive for another few months, but Finn has shared the full-length’s first single: The playfully (caustically?) titled ‘Snug as Fuck,’ an accomplished mini-epic imbued with lo-fi electronics and wispy vocals.

SONGS FOR GIRLS TWO KIMS DOWN

Six months and two bassists later, Pixies have finally broken silence on Kim Deal leaving the band. An article at Brooklyn Vegan has Pixies drummer, David Lovering commenting on Kim Deal’s departure: “When we were in the lurch when Kim Deal left it was a tough decision. Basically, no one can replace Kim Deal. It would be impossible to do. Kim Shattuck, we had actually hired her for the European tour, and that had finished a few weeks ago, and then we had worked with Paz in the past. Paz is just wonderful. She’s gonna take over for the next portion of it.”

Lily Allen, Beck and Jenny Lewis are among the artists who have penned music for the new season of Girls. The HBO scripted comedy written by Lena Dunham, who also stars in the show, will be broadcast on SOHO on Thu 16 Jan. Speaking to Radio.com about this season’s soundtrack, music supervisor Manish Raval said: “It’s the same sound, same vibe, but one thing that’s different this season is we’ve had the luxury of getting people to contribute brand new songs for us.”

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

SKY MOVIES EXTRA, 8.30PM

DIRECTED BY MARTIN SCORSESE STARRING LEONARDO DICAPRIO, JONAH HILL, MARGOT ROBBIE

Diagnosed with spinal cancer at just 27 years old, Adam navigates the road to recovery with the sometimes overbearing support of his crude best friend, his smothering mother and an inexperienced therapist. Inspired by a true story, this is an honest yet funny account of a young man’s journey toward healing.

THU 16 JAN JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT GENERAL RELEASE

Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck – now, Star Trek’s Chris Pine joins the list of actors to take on the iconic role of Tom Clancy’s creation. With Sir Kenneth Branagh (Thor) behind the camera, rebooting the franchise has never been so much fun. Keira Knightley makes a return to the screen as Ryan’s wife.

NEBRASKA GENERAL RELEASE

Bruce Dern and SNL’s Will Forte star in this father-son drama. Shot in black and white, the Golden Globe nominated flick follows the pair as they road trip from Montana to Nebraska in order to claim a million dollar sweepstakes prize the father believes he has won. A fascinating character study.

Sex, drugs and stockbroking – greed is a powerful thing. Set on a backdrop of excessive 1980s living, white-collar crime has never looked like so much fun. Based on the true story of former stockbroker-turnedmotivation speaker Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), The Wolf of Wall Street follows a young man’s ambitious for riches beyond his wildest dreams and the lengths he’ll go to in order to achieve them – which includes ripping off investors with fraudulent stock sales to the tune of millions of dollars. Much like our titular antihero, Wolf is a vapid and hollow “dramedy”. While outrageous office orgys and cocaine-fuelled parties are a constant source of laugh-out-loud humour, the excessive living eventually becomes repetitive and, as Jordan feels, it may be time to move on. Following a

classic “fall from grace” narrative, Jordan is eventually punished for his actions, but the movie ends on an ambiguous note and fails to reprimand the audience for vicariously enjoying his lavish lifestyle. This is no morality tale. Perhaps this was Scorsese’s intention to suggest greed has a hold over all of us or, at just over three hours, the film could have done with a decent cut. But it’s DiCaprio’s standout performance as Belfort and the evolution of him as a fresh-faced graduate to strung-out fraudster that really captivates and thrills. Yeah he’s ripping people off, but there’s something so likeable about him. It’s time to give that man an Oscar. LAURA WEASER LAURASSCREENING.COM

Metro by Hoyts is a little hipster and a very cool new way to watch movies. Fill your own drinks, then chill out in the grunge-themed lounge area. If you like silence in your flicks, you’ve come to the right place as a “no disturbance” policy is heavily enforced – no latecomers once the main feature starts and talkers, texters and tweeters are asked to leave.

BIG DAY OUT 2014 FRI 17 JAN WESTERN SPRINGS STADIUM, AUCKLAND

GHOST

THEY WON’T BE hard to find – they’ll be the ones dressed in black robes and masks, led by Papa Emeritus II (in full zombie pope regalia), churning out a Satanic rock opera. New Zealand doesn’t know what is about to hit it. I spoke with one of the black-clad Swedes, one of the five The Nameless Ghouls, about the symbolism, message, and mystery of Ghost. So what is it like being in a globe-trotting metal band when nobody knows your real name or what you look like? “I would say one of the most important ingredients for the bigger picture is not being individually associated to the band.” explained The Ghoul. “We can objectively look at and distance ourselves from what we are doing which is very healthy”. Quite understandably there is a lot of intrigue surrounding Ghost, given their fearsome appearance and occult themes in their songs. Standing out is certainly not going to be an issue but many might misconstrue their message or, even worse, take them as being authentic Devil worshipers. Their tales of diabolical evil are meant to be seen as outlandish even though they still have their roots in the real world. “One of the differences between [Ghost] and a lot of contemporary bands is that we are based around escapism and fantasy. As much as we are singing about divinity and the concept of deities it is also about how mankind relates to the concepts of the Deity and the spiritual world. We fall into a gray zone between reality and fiction.” Their sophomore album, Infestissumam released last year, is packed to the rafters with such examples of swinging gothic rock. The album’s title loosely translates as ‘the biggest threat’ so what, in the band’s own words, is the biggest threat? “Within the context of the album, the biggest threat is basically the idea of liberation. Traditionally the church and most religions have always labeled sexuality as the biggest threat to society. Female sexual liberation is usually the sign of some diabolical presence and we like to play with that concept.” And sexuality, unlikely as it might seem, is prominent element in the frightening world of Ghost. It can be heard in the songs; singing about Zombie Queens, succubi, and the raptures of Satan. Given the diverse nature of open air festivals, how do crowds who may not be aware of Ghost react to the drama and theatricality they bring to the stage? “I think that generally, most crowds that are new to us react very positively - we have a tendency to turn people over to our side. Obviously the imagery is intriguing to many and there’s always a certain percentage who will react negatively to us but that’s the whole point”. “We’re really looking forward to getting to New Zealand at last. From where we live it is literally on the opposite side of the globe. It might not be very easy to get there but we are very glad that we can start our relationship with the country now”. Hold on to your daughters brothers and sisters, Ghost are coming!

GROUPLOVE

ANDREW WESSEN, LEAD singer of the LA-based indie pop outfit Grouplove, is “super-stoked’ at the release of their sophomore album Spreading Rumours. Wessen, who likens himself to the Baby Spice of the group, tells me that they’d holed up in an old Motown house in LA for 10 weeks, barely sneaking out to a party or to see friends, in order to write, rehearse and record. “We came of the back of a US tour to promote the first album and then took a week off before going to this house. We lived there and would write in the morning, rehearse in the afternoon, and then record at like two or three in the morning. We did most things in a couple of takes. It wasn’t a reason to get everything perfect; it wasn’t, ‘Okay, now let’s roll take 400’. We wanted that fresh live spontaneity!” In all, the band produced an encyclopedic lexicon of material. “We had more than 40 songs. But the record company said ‘reign it in’. Too many songs. We whittled it down to 20 or less. That was hard, but no-one’s gonna let us release a double album.” Grouplove have always remained tight. “We like to control everything. We all write songs. Ryan [Rabin] produces our albums and Hannah [Hooper] does the artwork. The art for this new album was one of the very first drawings Hannah did and we really liked it. She’s done gallery shows all over the world. She does all our art on the albums, singles etc.” Grouplove turned heads in 2011 with their party-chant ‘Tongue Tied’, which features the band bouncing around during a party while a young man recalls how he ended up face down in a child’s paddling pool in backyard suburbia. The new video for ‘Ways…’ is a bit of a dream sequence, too. It has a child lookalike Kim Jong-un waking up and rebelling his marshal law roots and getting loose with the band. He swaps his khakis for a Hawaiian shirt and plays havoc in the palace, even freeing political prisoners, while the band jams in the grand hall. “We like the idea that our music is about love and peace and fun,” says Wessen. Grouplove’s sound is often compared to The Naked and Famous. “We love those guys,” he says. “They complement what we do. David [Beadle] and I look so similar. We’re brothers, identical twins. We should swap and play in each other’s bands, see if anyone notices! We’re super stoked that we’re part of the Big Day Out. I know it’s a cliché, but we want to tour and see the place. We hear a lot from N&F and we want to see for ourselves what’s happening’”

THE NAKED AND FAMOUS

JUST ONE SONG and Auckland quintet The Naked and Famous shot to global success, leaving behind five NZ Music Awards, an APRA Silver Scroll and the top spot on both our singles and albums chart, for a whirlwind two years of rock star life – touring the world, going Gold in the US and Canada, having their songs feature on shows like Gossip Girl and films like Pitch Perfect and attracting celebrity fans. But the band say their speedy success sprouted more than a few tall poppies in New Zealand, so when the time came to start a follow-up to 2010’s Passive Me, Aggressive You, coming home was not an option. The group instead settled in Los Angeles to record In Rolling Waves. “I didn’t feel it from anyone I respected in the music industry – it was mainly dumb kids running blogs – but we did get heaps of sh** from the indie scene,” says vocalist and guitarist Thom Powers, chatting at LA’s Bedrock Recording Studios. “Everyone was like ‘Sell-outs!’ just because we had experienced success. Children don’t understand what success means or how it happens so all they do is call you a ‘Faggot’.” Frontwoman Alisa Xayalith adds that in Los Angeles, there is “only optimism about other people’s successes” and despite initially having doubts about heading to Hollywood, the band has thrived in the gogetting environment. “If I’d been asked a few years ago, ‘Do you want to go to the States?’ I would have lied and said it was unreasonable and that I’d never make it here,’” says Powers.

MUDHONEY

“WE’RE 50-YEAR-OLD men jumping around on stage. It’s hard to take that too seriously,” says Mudhoney guitarist Steve Turner after an intense game of telephone tag (though it felt a little more like phone solitaire). The grunge rockers are celebrating their 25th year and have announced a side show to accompany their billing at 2014’s Big Day Out. While Turner says he prefers smaller venues to festivals, the band are offering their fans best of both worlds and, rest assured, they won’t be taking themselves too seriously while they’re at it. “There’s less pressure [from smaller gigs] and they’re more fun and you’re closer to the crowd,” he says. It seems then that the intimacy of Auckland’s Kings Arms will provide Turner with the closeness he so enjoys and the fans their fair share of Mudhoney’s honest lyrics and unique sound. Their secret to minimising their own disdain for their setlist is this: “We try to play some songs every night that [the fans] would expect us to play. We do play different songs each night [and] there’s no-one following us around on tour so they don’t know and don’t mind,” Turner says laughing. Vanishing Point is the band’s latest release and while it adds some new sounds to the Mudhoney arsenal (synths), Turner says it’s hardly a departure from what they’ve done before. “We’ve been adding stuff since Guy [Maddison, bassist] joined us and we’ve felt freed up since then.”

“Which I guess is a defeatist New Zealand perspective. You think, ‘I’m trapped here and I’m never going to get out,’ and you lower yourself. If you say you want to go to LA and be in a famous, world-touring, international, alternative band people would say, ‘F*** off dick.’

The freedom has allowed the band to “do whatever we want” and while Turner says they may lose some fans, he’s quick to note the last record used a horn section.

“So the fact I’m here is like a fantasy ambition.”

“On [Vanishing Point], we got a great guy on keyboards and there’s not too much, but we did add additional synths.”

That fantasy foray into the US – spurred by 2010 single ‘Young Blood’ – kicked off with a heavy tour schedule which saw them playing backto-back gigs, including iconic festivals like Lollapalooza. While endless shows saw them grow as performers, bassist David Beadle says the tour also taught them the importance of factoring in how songs will be performed live during the creative process. As a result, rather than layering up sounds and instruments, on In Rolling Waves they included only what they would be capable of performing on stage. Powers and Xayalith once again took the song-writing reigns and the band had producer Billy Bush and former Nine Inch Nails bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen on hand to help them through creative stumbling blocks. While LA remains their base and proved the best location to record In Rolling Waves, NZ is still home and the group are looking forward to playing Kiwi soil at the upcoming Big Day Out. “One of the first international things we did was the Big Day Out in Australia and NZ,” says Powers. “That’s what kicked everything off in 2011. It’s where we started, so we can’t wait to be back.” Beyond the festival, while they have other interests – Powers want to further his studies and Beadle is finishing up entomology papers – the band intend to keep going as long as possible. Says Powers: “I think we’ll see this band through until it’s embarrassing for us to still be singing ‘Young Blood!’”

Mudhoney isn’t the band’s primary income and this has a big influence on the way they write. Turner says the end of their Warner Brothers contract and departure of Matt Lukin “cleared the air” and “we could do whatever we wanted”. The pressure to make a commercially viable record has long gone. The band take writing very seriously, but it’s clear that their albums and the survival of the band are products of pure passion. And it’s this passion that has allowed Mudhoney to build a certain amount of prestige and while Turner says they knew they’d never have a hit album, taking to him about the current state of music feels like talking to an old friend. Commercial pop isn’t taking over “any more than other times,” Turner says thoughtfully. “Music is more readily available than it was with everything being online.” The connectivity has given rise to a healthy and vibrant underground scene which reaches from one side of the globe to the other. “There seems to be more of them [underground scenes], but not everyone will look that deeply. Commercial pop has always been lame. Now we have Miley Cyrus being shocking, yawn.” “In a weird sort of way, nothing is obscure anymore. The weird stuff that I was listening to at the end of the 1980s even the 1960s has all been found and reissued.” SEBASTIAN MACKAY

WARPAINT AT ST JEROME’S Laneway Festival 2011, one of the band’s that really stuck out was LA’s all girl band Warpaint. “Yeah, we loved that festival. Getting Downunder is a real enjoyment,” teases guitarist/vocalist Emily Kokal, on the phone from the Angel City’s well frequented laundromat. “This has to be the least “Rock’n’Roll” moment of my career,” she quips, “Talking to the press, to promote our new album, whilst separating my whites and smalls for the dryer!” Kokal , in her casual, domestic mood is referring to the January release of the band’s second album, Warpaint. The laundromat is not too far from Angelino Heights, one of the oldest surviving districts of Los Angeles, where the band rehearses in gutarist, Theresa Wayman’s, funky Victorian house, a world away from the city’s ugly freeways and strip malls. Wayman’s digs are also home to her sandy-haired son Sirius and, during some months, her boyfriend, British electronic musician James Blake. Kokal talks about rooms stacked with shelves crammed with books on tarot and meditation, wrinkled vinyl records by people like British electronic pioneer Daphne Oram (“she’s weirdly-neat!”), The Roches and his Royal Purpleness – Prince. In addition, there’s tomato plants and a “big statue of Ganesha, the Hindu deity of new beginnings. It’s not a hippy house but we have many influences,

we’re all over the place.” It’s a clear metaphor for the moody, brooding and laid back style of their new record, which follows, three year’s after their debut The Fool. The themes and tone of the previous work is still there - washes of noise, deft girl group harmonies and almost jazz free-form moments — but the deeper cuts are more grunty, muscular, more pronounced. “That’s deliberate. It was partly because we’ve been working with (producer) Flood… he was, um, ‘educational! (she pronounces this word with some caution, so as not to come across as too condescending).” This is particularly evident on the single ‘Love is to Die’, which is both provocative as it is a swooning ode to love, lust and life. At least that’s the interpretation I put to Kokal. She laughs “Well, yes. You could see it that way. But I dunno. Theresa (vocals, guitars) wrote it. She was after a sort of theme… lightness, darkness… it’s open to interpretation… it’s opening herself up, too.”

Additionally, the rehearsal and recording process was filmed for a “twisted behind-the-scenes doco” by video artist Chris Cunningham, who’s married to the band’s bassist, Jenny Lee Lindberg. “It is certainly an interesting watch – he did this sort of alien infrared video

nightmare thing (Rubber Johnny (2005) based on a riff of Aphex Twin’s ‘afx237 v7’). It’s not some twee, Kokal tells me, ‘formed’ on Valentine’s Day 2004 at a local hotel. “An auspicious day, for lovers and music swooners”, she teases but never reveals her joke. The original lineup consisted of Wayman and Kokal alongside sisters Shannyn Sossamon and Jenny Lee Lindberg. “Shannyn had a band we loved called The Methods. They played two songs, then we did two songs. We all got on and decided to all get together.” The ‘new’ band played in the Los Angeles area for about three years, writing songs (‘Stars’, ‘Beetles’, and ‘Elephants’) which would eventually comprise their debut EP, Exquisite Corpse (2007), which was mastered by then-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, who was also Kokal’s boyfriend at the time. The EP was initially self-released but still made #1 on the influential LA Amoeba Records local artist charts. The single ‘Elephants’ featured in Andrew Hull’s 2011 Horror flick Siren, which garnered the right level of cred to earn recording time for 2012’s The Fool. Drummer Stella Mozgawa joined the band in the winter of 2009. Shortly afterwards, Warpaint won representation at Rough Trade Records, and hit the road touring the USA, Europe and down here. “I think my favourite moment (of that time) was

opening for The xx, they were cool!” coos Kokal. The Fool brought great notoriety and inspired a year of touring and playing. “What was fun was rediscovering the songs both on and off the stage. We kept coming to them from new places, play them differently, jam them up or change them around. But now it was time to make new music, too.” In early 2011 Mozgawa told the UK press that the band was keen to “experiment and write with one another” (the current line-up had never actually composed “from the ground up”). “Like everything we do, it started with jamming and free-flowing onstage and in the studio”. Wayman went on record as saying the band wanted a minimalist sound on the new disc. “But we were also influenced by R&B and rap,” notes Kokal,” You know, drum machines and ambience.” As the album is largely keys-based, it’s “definitely a different beast from the last one.” So is there a chance we might see them back down this way again? “Well, yeah I hope so. Stella’s parents are supposed to be down there somewhere. We’ll be touring this album at Coachella and the other big gigs, we’ve had a good response so we could well be back there, too.” TIM GRUAR NEW ALBUM: WARPAINT OUT FRI 17 JAN

NIHILUMBRA PC (EXCLUSIVE) Indie games have a vital role to play in the contemporary gaming ecosystem. When the big publishers have too much on the line - both financially and in terms of reputation - to take big risks, it’s typically to the independents that we turn for innovation and to push the boundaries of what a videogame can be. Sometimes, the risks taken are more than vindicated; Bastion and The Walking Dead are regarded by many as two of the best games - indie or otherwise - to come out in recent years. Other times, a great idea is lost amidst poor execution or a lack of funding. But perhaps most frequent of all are those indie games that sit somewhere in between, that take a good idea and manage to run with it, creating a great experience but not necessarily one that’s going to be a Game of the Year contender. Nihilumbra, a puzzle-platformer from the Spain-based BeautiFun Games originally developed for iOS and now ported to PC, is one such experience. Nihilumbra sets out with a bold goal: to capture the complexities of existential nihilism - a philosophical theory that life has no intrinsic meaning - in a videogame. It does this by placing you in the shoes of an unnamed protagonist born of an eternal nothingness known as the Void, who manages to escape said emptiness in an effort to find some meaning for their existence. Naturally, the Void isn’t too happy about this, sending out all manner of nasties to try and reclaim our existentially conflicted hero. To help you escape the Void, you’ll periodically obtain new powers in the form of colours, which can be drawn onto the world with various outcomes. For example, the blue power lets you create ice, which can be used to move objects that would otherwise be too heavy, gain momentum for long jumps, or send enemies sliding into chasms. Red gives you fire to burn enemies and light dark areas, yellow gives you electricity to power machines, and so on. The puzzles are brilliantly designed and fiendishly unforgiving; they’ll stretch the grey matter of even the most accomplished puzzle-platformer fan. Nihilumbra is a fantastic example of what can happen when developers are willing to try new things, and focus on just what it is that makes videogames a unique medium. MATTHEW CODD

SONY ANNOUNCE PLAYSTATION NOW STREAMING SERVICE

Sony have announced PlayStation Now, a new game-streaming service that will allow gamers to play “popular hits and classic games” from the PlayStation 3 software library on a range of devices. The service will enable streaming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 initially, before expanding first to PlayStation Vita, and then non-PlayStation devices, like 2014 models of the Sony Bravia TV range, and then “numerous other Internetconnected devices.”

GRAN TURISMO 6 PLAYSTATION 3 (EXCLUSIVE) The joy of Gran Turismo is in unlocking, progressing, getting faster, and winning more money. Gran Turismo is like Pokemon, but with cars. It’s an RPG where all of the main characters are vehicles, and none of them can talk, and there’s no story, and instead of fighting obscure Japanese monsters I race against other cars that also don’t talk but that I am more than happy to ram off the road without mercy. One of the things I have always enjoyed about the Gran Turismo series is that if you are good at the game, there are ways of letting the game know that you’re good, which lets you progress perhaps that little bit more quickly. One such way is through license testing. However, GT6 places much less emphasis on the licenses, possibly because some people view them as a difficult and boring aspect of the franchise. There’s only five tests per license now, and the cars you get for getting all golds aren’t as flash as they were in the last game. Where it counts, Gran Turismo 6 has it – there’s racing, and lots of it. Career mode is massive, and putting ten or so hours into the game isn’t even going to make a dent in the sheer number of events available. A new moon-based mission is kind of fun, but ultimately pointless, and involves you driving point to point, or knocking over cones, in zero gravity on the moon in a rover that weighs 35 moon kilograms. The new Festival of Speed sees you complete the same course with a variety of vastly different cars, and is actually an extremely cool way to see how different the course drives every time. Graphics are realistic in Gran Turismo 6; some of the environments are lovely, and driving around the Matterhorn is a postcard anyone would be happy to receive, but I can’t help but feel those environments were still pretty lovely in the last game, and even in the one before that. The sound, too, is what you’d expect. In a lot of ways Gran Turismo 6 is a much more fluid game than its predecessor, if a somewhat modest improvement on 5. If you like the sound of that, get stuck in the replay value is through the roof! BRENDAN KELLY

The PS Now service, as Sony are referring to it, will enter into a Beta program in the US at the end of January; a full roll-out is planned for Summer in that country. A local rollout is intended, however Sony are not yet committing to a timeframe for the availability of the service in New Zealand. Pricing information for the service has not yet been revealed, however Sony stated, “you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription model that will enable you to explore a range of titles.”

ENCORE SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS

VETERAN SESSION SINGER Sharon Jones was already 40 years old when she walked into a studio to sing on a Lee Fields record, produced by young R&B fanatics Philip Lehman and Gabriel Roth. In the years that followed, Lehman and Roth kept calling on Jones’ vocal talents for limited edition 45s, that looked and sounded just like true vintage soul. After Lehman and Roth dissolved their partnership in 2000, Roth - now going by the stage name “Bosco Mann”- cofounded Daptone Records with Neal Sugarman, and their first release was to be a full length Sharon Jones album. A new band was formed from the ashes of the Soul Providers and the Mighty Imperials and in 2002 Sharon Jones & The Dap-King released their first album, Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Four albums later and 2013 saw the band ready to release their new album, Give the People What They Want. But 2013 ended up being a year of frustration, fear and false starts for Jones. Not long after announcing the summer release of their fifth album Jones was diagnosed with cancer and everything had to be put on hold; tours were cancelled and the album had to be shelved. “It’s been a very intense last three years”, Jones explains down the phone line in her soothing Southern drawl. “My mother passing away, Neil Sugarman’s brother passing away, and my cancer. The first time they think

it’s just a mild cancer, then its pancreatic cancer… they took out my gall bladder and a foot and a half of my intestine.” All of this makes the arrival of Give the People What They Want (and a planned return to the stage in February) especially gratifying. Though a lot of the album was recorded before Jones got sick, it’s hard not to read a special piquancy into the album, as the singer dismisses old lovers in the up-tempo stomper ‘Retreat!’, marches directly into the pulsing Detroit-flavoured soul of ‘Stranger To My Happiness’, before easing back down into the mellow feel-good anthem ‘We Get Along’. Set against The Dap-Kings’ characteristically springy horns, Jones growls and struts through 10 timeless songs that couldn’t be better suited for the stage. And to the bands credit, the studio also serves them well, retaining that crackly analog sound the Dap Kings have become known for. It hasn’t been easy for Jones, not surprisingly, and that’s speaking to her on a good day with only two Chemo treatments left. “I feel ok today and that’s why I started doing all the interviews. The other day my white blood cells were down and I was in to much pain… and then they give you this needle in your bone marrow.” While chemotherapy has been helping to kill the cancer cells Jones’ side-affects have been far reaching: “My eyebrows and eyelashes are gone, everything

ya know. The doctors keep telling me once they stop the chemo my hair will grow back; “Sharon you gonna be on stage and these things are gonna be turning back to normal.” I can’t wait till I’ve got my energy back and I’m healthy.” Unfortunately Jones’ health was so poor that she wasn’t able to do any music for a while, “I couldn’t concentrate, I was in so much pain.” But during this time she did manage to do a video for ‘Stranger To My Happiness’, which saw the band shooting in the corner of a warehouse, made up to look like a wedding reception. And while that timeless signature sound and her worldweary (slightly more than before) voice are there, Jones didn’t want to pretend she wasn’t sick and chose not to wear a wig, largely out of respect and appreciation for her fans. “I wanted to let everyone see because I’m not trying to hide… want to make sure they see me and what I’m going through, because they are part of my healing process. So it’s all therapy for me.” Therapy that I was also (and somewhat unexpectedly) able to be part of. In preparation for the interview I’d created two sets of questions, wondering how much Jones would or would not want to talk about her health. But in just a few short minutes I abandoned all questions, as Jones laconically laid bare her emotions. “I really thought I was gonna die. I thought the record was going to be out and people would never

see me play it live. It’s opened up my faith and given me more strength, and that’s the reason I want to go out and show the fans. I want to get out there and do this for another eight or 10 years… I’m prayin’ I’ve got another eight or 10 years of being healthy. I didn’t realise how important health was, you take it granted.” It will be a different me going back out… not in my little dresses anymore. So different, and ya know, it’s gonna be a different Sharon come out there. You can’t go back, but this sickness has changed me. My whole eating, my everything. And I’ve still got a lot of adjusting to do.” The album has different connotations and significance for Jones and her band now compared to when they started work on it - and is a very personal album: “It’s dedicated in memory to my mother and Sugarman’s brother,” Jones explains. It should be yet another boon for fans of dusty-grooves who like their funk extra retro, and regardless of everything, Jones is set to Give the People [exactly] What They Want this January. “I can’t wait to get back out there, the stage will give me back my happiness, my joy. I’m a little nervous, but let me tell me something, every night before I get on that stage I’m a little nervous.” REN KIRK NEW ALBUM: GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT OUT FRI 17 JAN
