The Breaking Bad actor is in negotiations with Ron Howard about the character of Eddie Dean, who is a lead figure in the Stephen King book series of the same name. He has been quoted saying: “I’ve had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show [Breaking Bad], which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am.” The Dark Tower was stalled in pre-production when Universal Studios dropped the project, however Warner Bros. expressed interest in August 2012, but passed a few weeks later. Howard later confirmed it was a working progress and they still had plans to create the Western.

HATEFUL FIX
Quentin Tarantino, in an interview told deadline.com that his current film project, entitled The Hateful Eight, leaked after giving the script to six people. Late last year Quentin Tarantino was telling Jay Leno on the Tonight Show that he enjoyed making Django Unchained so much that his next film was to be a western. But now Tarantino will publish The Hateful Eight for bookstores and may revisit the idea of turning it into a film further down the track. “I’m very, very depressed,” Tarantino said. “I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn’t mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it’s gotten out today.”
The ‘Karma Police’ hitmakers have put making their next record on hold to focus on their individual side projects, including frontman Thom Yorke’s supergroup Atoms For Peace, and enjoy some much-needed time off. In an interview with music website Drowned in Sound, bassist Colin Greenwood said: “It’s all up in the air at the minute. Thom’s just come back from touring Atoms For Peace and he’s having some quiet time. I’m sorry to be vague but we’re all just taking it easy at the moment.”

Adele will reportedly head out on the road again next year after spending time being a mother to her 15-month-old son Angelo. “At the moment the discussions are all about a 2015 tour of the UK and North America at least, possibly a world tour. The lead, title track ‘Everyday Robots’ is accompanied by a video directed by artist and designer Aitor Throup. FILM OF THE WEEK
WED 29 JAN
AMERICAN HUSTLE
THE OUT LIST SOHO, 8.30PM
In this one-hour portrait of contemporary gay life in the US, director-producer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders films a diverse cross-section of high-profile interviewees, who share personal and professional stories, both heart-wrenching and triumphant, of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer experience.
DIRECTED BY DAVID O. RUSSELL STARRING CHRISTIAN BALE, AMY ADAMS, BRADLEY COOPER
THU 30 JAN PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES GENERAL RELEASE
In the fifth film, director Chris Landon has called this one a “cousin” to the found-footage horror series. While it features the demon from the PA canon that previously claimed Kristi and Katie, it incorporates new themes.
21 SKY MOVIES GREATS, 8.30PM
Based on a true story of six MIT students, who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. It’s a fast-paced thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat, guessing who will win the next round, on and off the table.
In the tradition of David O. Russell films favouring elaborate character development over plot, American Hustle throws together a cast of wildly unpredictable individuals and watches what happens as tensions boil over. Seasoned con man Irving Rosenfeld (played by an almost unrecognisable Christian Bale) and his equally clever and seductive partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), get into a bind when they find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Striking up a deal with the FBI, the pair go into business, with the help of federal agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), to catch bigger fish in the sea of corruption. From Bale to Bradley, there’s not a weak link among the main cast as each one holds his or her own on screen. While Bale went to great lengths physically to assume the position of Irving – including a combover and a pot belly – Jennifer Lawrence only has
to walk into a room and she has the audiences attention as the abrasive, outspoken Jersey housewife. While the plot falls thin in some parts and a two-and-a-half-hour running time leaves moments of restlessness, enough sparks fly between our dynamic leads to keep things interesting. Flashbacks and voice-overs appear initially as film school 101 techniques, but Russell uses them to his advantage to stop what is essentially a classic caper flick from becoming staid. The 1970s provides a colourful backdrop for our tale, and moments of disco dancing and perms provide light-hearted breaks from the more serious nature of the con. Good times, bad times, you’ll have your share through American Hustle, but one last dupe will win you over at the film’s end. LAURA WEASER LAURASSCREENING.COM

GARAGE PROJECT
Cargo Bar was the city’s very first container bar to open after the Christchurch earthquake. Of course, they created a strong following with locals and visitors who wanted to experience the new nightlife the city had to offer.
What began as a garage-based project is still a garage-based project. Only it has become more public and it’s destined for great things. Boys with a passion for beer, Pete Gillespie and Jos Ruffell (with help from Pete’s brother Ian), took that dream and turned it into a microbrewery. For them, it is all about experimentation. Trying new things, getting creative with craft beer and seeing where different brews will take them. For the boys, there is no barrier to crafting the best beer. Hence the garage mentality. They have opened their cellar door, where you can come in and try their experiments. There’s even an off license for takeaway sales.

THE MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2014
With 2013 now very much in the past, and the dust finally beginning to settle on the various “which game was the best of the year?” conversations that typically do the rounds at the end of a given 12-month period / start of the next, it seems appropriate to put what is aside and think instead about what’s next. In no particular order, then, here’s five games to look out for in 2014: CALL OF DUTY XI The as yet unannounced sequel to Activision’s on-going money-printing franchise that we all know is coming. Look for an announcement in late April / early May, for release between November 7th and 14th. Rumours suggest it will be Modern Warfare 4 (developed by Sledgehammer Games), to be followed by Black Ops III (by Treyarch) in 2015, and Ghosts 2 (by Infinity Ward) in 2016. DARK SOULS II Developed by From Software, the sequel to 2011’s Dark Souls (itself the spiritual successor to 2009’s Demon’s Souls) looks to continue the ultra hard action RPG gameplay of its forebears. Punishingly difficult, the series rewards perseverance beating it will likely be very satisfying indeed, assuming you actually can… DESTINY The next game from the team that brought us Halo, Destiny has a massive budget, suggesting that both Bungie and Activision are expecting it to be very successful indeed. It’s set 700 years into the future and things look pretty grim. An event of some sort has brought mankind to the brink of extinction; it’s up to the player, their friends, and random strangers to team up and put things right. INFAMOUS: SECOND SON The next entry in the award-winning open-world superhero action series from Sucker Punch features a new protagonist (Delsin Rowe) and a new location - the real-world city of Seattle. Otherwise, the developers promise that the game will still contain the core elements of the franchise: exploration, moral choices, and open-ended combat thanks to a multitude of special abilities. METAL GEAR SOLID: GROUND ZEROES Ground Zeroes is the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and “will serve to introduce key gameplay components” as well as acting “as a bridge between the linearity of existing titles and the full open-world environments of MGSV.” There’s plenty of other big games planned for the year, too, and likely some we don’t even know about yet. All things considered, 2014 is already shaping up to be a bumper year for gamers. ALAN BELL
RESIDENT EVIL 4 ULTIMATE HD EDITION COMING TO PC
Capcom have announced an “Ultimate HD Edition” of their critically acclaimed survival horror game Resident Evil 4, due for release on February 28th. The Ultimate HD Edition has had a “complete visual overhaul,” with improved textures, widescreen optimization, and the capacity to run at 60 frames per second. All additional content from previous releases of the game - such as the Separate Ways epilogue - will also be included. Resident Evil 4 originally released on GameCube in 2005, to some of the highest review scores Capcom has ever seen, and has since been released on PS2, PC, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and iOS. Ultimate HD Edition can be pre-purchased now on Steam for US$19.99; doing so will also get you a digital soundtrack and digital art book as pre-order bonuses.
RAINBOW MOON PS VITA/PS3 Rainbow Moon is a massive game. But it isn’t just big - it’s wildly fun, and manages to maintain momentum throughout its duration, while somehow managing to never buckle under the weight of its own magnitude. Never heard of it? It’s a tactical role-playing game, with fun stuff like dungeon crawling, turn-based tactics, boss fights, and so on. Released for the PS3 way back in 2012, it was recently updated for play on the Vita, too. The game opens with the protagonist, Baldren, inexplicably being sent through some sort of portal and winding up in the eponymous land, Rainbow Moon. From there, it’s case of trying to figure out why he’s there and how to return home, helping people in need along the way. While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Rainbow Moon innovative, it does add its own spin to things, particularly with the way battle turns work. In your standard TRPG, turns alternate on a team-by-team basis, but Rainbow Moon uses a system where a character’s Speed stat determines the frequency of their actions (think Final Fantasy X or Radiant Historia, if you’ve played those.) Player and enemy turns are intermingled, and a high speed character will get a lot more turns than a lowspeed one. When you’re not fighting, you’re exploring dungeons - and, more than likely, you’re having a damn good time doing it. Rainbow Moon has, hands down, some of the best, most elaborately designed dungeons I’ve ever seen in a game. They’re big and interesting, and to call them labyrinthine would be an understatement. Making things even better is the fact that there is treasure everywhere. A big part of the fun in exploring is that you know, almost without fail, that going off the beaten path will get you some sort of tangible reward. On top of that, battles are triggered by colliding with an enemy on the map, and once beaten, they won’t respawn for a few in-game days. Ultimately, Rainbow Moon is a fantastic offering that’s easy to recommend. Unless you desperately need a decent storyline to enjoy a game, this is a mustbuy for any JRPG fan, especially for $24.95. I’ve put 95 hours into the game so far, and I’m still going strong - that should tell you all you need to know. MATTHEW CODD

DAMIEN MARLEY COUP D’ÉTAT, AOTEAROA, Herbs, Dread, Beat and Blood, The Black Seeds, Katchafire, Conscious Roots and many other Kiwi reggae artists all owe a massive debt to the Marley family “… and I am very grateful for the honour and resect that the New Zealand people have shown me and my family,” notes the youngest member, Damian Marley, also known as ‘Jr Gong’ - ‘Sr’ being his father Bob. Sr. Marley toured New Zealand, playing at Western Springs 34 years ago. His inspiration was indeed massive on this country, particularly for Maori who embraced him and his music with such passion. For some it became the music of land rights protest, anti-nuclear activism, freedom. For others it was the inspiration for the soundtrack to a movie about a farmer and his dog. A film, Mt Zion, has been made about that tour and its legacy. “I was just told about that today. That story, about Reggae changing lives,” he says, acknowledging the story of the Patea Maori Club. “It is something I’ve heard before because Reggae is a people’s music, of struggle and unity and strength.”
Appreciation for old school and new reggae has resurged lately, “the internet has given us the ability to learn so much about the past and discover music outside our own small sphere of influence. There are all these bands that have all their fans from online, with no airplay. And I can check out collaborators and just email them.” Damian worked with rapper Nas on Distant Relatives, who also did the single ‘Road to Zion’, with the proceeds of the album going to building schools in the Congo. And he’s been part of Mick Jagger’s SuperHeavy with Joss Stone, Dave Stewart and A.R. Rahman. He also made ‘Make It Bun Dem’ last year with Skrillex, which Rolling Stone called “a monster mash up of dubstep and dancehall”, and appeared in the game in the 2012 game Far Cry 3. Damian earned his stripes with his third project Welcome to Jamrock (2005). The lyrics to the title track centred on poverty, politics and crime in Jamaica, and courted controversy locally for its perceived negativity of the island. “My fight, if you will, has not been the physical but the moral fight, to get things noticed. I think the world has got better, with palliative communications due to the Internet and access to better information. You cannot claim to be ignorant anymore.” And the single certainly got noticed, reaching #13 on the UK Charts, and #55 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and voted #100 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade. The album also won a Grammy Award in 2009.
Damian is on the phone to me from his home in Miami. “I am surrounded by other members of the Marley family.” He is the youngest of Bob’s 11 ‘official’ children, “we’ve been based here for a number of years. Reggae is something the family does, it’s our business but we have other interest too.” Damian was born two months before his father died of cancer in 1978, so he never really knew his father personally. He began early in the ‘business’, at age 13, forming the musical group the Shephards, which included the daughter of Freddie McGregor and son of Third World’s Cat Core. Eventually Damian went solo and with the backing of his dad’s label, Tuff Gong, releasing Mr. Marley, produced by Damian’s brother, Stephen Marley. It surprised many who were unaccustomed to hearing Marley deejaying rather than singing. If pushed came to shove, Damian admits, “I’d call my music ‘modern dancehall’ and ‘reggae’. People separate them but you can’t”, he continues, “it’s Jamaican culture in general. I don’t try to classify or separate. One of the most inspiring experiences was when I was in Argentina watching a local band playing in the Jamaican style, just like us. I know many, like Maori in New Zealand, as you say, they put their own cultural twist on the music but it’s also a real honor and pleasure to see other cultures pay homage to Jamaican music, playing it as close to how we do it.” I ask if he’s heard of the “Maori Strum”. He laughs. “You mean “Checking”? Every culture and country calls it their own thing.”

Lately, he’s been working with his brothers Stephen and Julian under their Ghetto Youths International Label, which was established to foster new talent. “We’ve been recording with Chris Ellis, son of the legendary singer Alton Ellis. Chris has a real vintage rock steady sound, which is awesome. Also Wayne Marshall, he has this new Modern Dance Hall style. He’s just completing an album, so when we come over to New Zealand we’ll be showcasing some of that music.” Along with Black-Am-I, Morgan Heritage, Shaggy and former WOMAD stars Groundation Damian will perform at next year’s Raggamuffin (January 31-1 February 2014). In a perfect closing circle the festival coincides with the week of Bob Marley’s birthday. “I’m really looking forward to returning to New Zealand and learning about the people with who my father had so much influence and effect on.” Chur, Damian.
