Two names in electronic music, and one New Zealand show. Dunedin, you are one lucky SOB for this opportunity. Playing as part of OUSA’s Orientation Week line-up, this might be their biggest international act to date. Featuring Chase & Status, Tinie Tempah and Sub Focus, it’s a triple threat of awesome.
Eden Mulholland, the former front man of New Zealand outfit Motorcade, released his debut solo album Feed The Beast in 2013. Eden, who now resides in Australia, has begun recording his second album with New York based producer Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Beth Orton) and is excited to share new material.

If your boss doesn’t mind you a little worse for wear on Thursday morning, it’s time to party up. After Rhythm & Vines in Gisborne last year, Rudimental are back for a headline gig, joined by Gorgon City and Naughty Boy. Bursting out of London’s underground in May 2012, the band has conquered the globe with chart-toppers left, right and centre.
6 PM, $ 75, UTR.CO.NZ
Down continue to resonate in the underground and beyond. After three full-length studio albums, they don’t merely have a cult following; they are a cult. Riffs, drums and Anselmo’s inimitable delivery captivate over the course of the band’s EP. It’s dark and dangerous, so hear it first-hand. Supported by Suicide Silence and Depths.

Four of the most influential bands of the 1990s are coming to show New Zealand and it doesn’t get better than this. It’s been two years since Southern California’s raucous punk heroes Pennywise announced the return of the band’s original vocalist, Jim Lindberg, and they are keen to put him to good use.

Debut EP I Hate The Mall was originally only available via the bands Bandcamp page and live shows, but demand for this seven-track, 14-minute long package quickly became apparent. Songs about pro-wrestler Ric Flair, small town New Zealand and, as the title suggests, hating the mall are all delivered with a Kiwi hardcore punk ethos.
10 PM
The duo have decided to extend their current national tour to include one final show at The Tuning Fork at Vector Arena, before they head off to work on solo records and tour overseas for the rest of the year. And since the release of their nationally acclaimed album, the pair have found themselves in high demand.
No stranger to New Zealand, UK’s A Sides is back again and ready to hit the decks. Jason Cambridge, began in 1990 and has released more than 500 jungle and d ‘n’ b tracks to date. He has collaborated with the likes of Calibre, Makoto and Jenna G, but is also an established artist in his own right.

The Auckland-based Christchurch boys are embarking on a short, but sweet, four-date tour to support their new sophomore album Nobody/Everybody. Recorded at Mt Eden’s The Lab, and with the help of former Mint Chick Kody Nielson, this is a new sound for the band as they try to capture the essence of a live show, while still keeping their 1960s pop inspired vibe.

Auckland indie-popsters Lightning Bells are about to release their new EP Chime, so they’re coming to the capital to celebrate. Formed in a dusty basement, brother and sister teamed up with a long-time friend and a few wonderful collaborators to form the musical trill of Lightning Bells. It’s just $5 on the door for good Kiwi music.
After a excursion away from a New Zealand winter and off to the wide world of Europe, Six60 are doing the rounds. Recently appearing at Homegrown and BW Festival, they’re showcasing the skills they have picked up from overseas festivals such as Glastonbury, The Great Escape and Summerfest.

ALL ABOUT BOND
THE STRANGER
TERRY O’NEILL
ALBERT CAMUS
NOVEL
NOVEL
Since 1962, James Bond has captivated viewers across the globe. The cars, chicks, locations and that infamous drink have become as iconic as the man himself. Celebrating 50 years of 007, this colourful book is packed with classic images of Bond, from Connery to Craig, and the first beguiling Bond girls, Honey Ryder and Pussy Galore.
Through the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach, author Albert Camus explored what he termed “the nakedness of man faced with the absurd”. First published in English in 1946; now in a new translation by Matthew Ward, The Stranger’s theme and outlook are often cited as exemplars of existentialism.

Growing and selling fresh produce from their Matakana property since 1992, the focus has always been on providing straight from garden to road side stall for the local community. Then, in 2007, a trip to Italy inspired the expansion into gelato – a light, more flavoursome version of ice cream. These guys make their own gelato and sorbettos daily in small batches to keep the fresh taste and high quality, using seasonal fruit either grown on the property or sourced locally. Charlie’s Gelato Garden is modelled on a “gelateria artiginale” where the gelato is made fresh each day from the best available ingredients.
Dreamt up by a couple of “brothers” (Andrew Larson and Anthony Browne) – over a few brewskis – Brothers Beer is a passion project that became a business. Their idea was to create a place where beer was not a secondary thing to food, but the main event. People wanted more from their lagers, they wanted quality brews that would complement their meal rather than wash it down. They’ve got 18 beers on tap and cider. You can have a glass of beer at their location in City Works Depot, or fill a flagon to take away. For delivery, they pack in boxes of six riggers, which can be mixed.

An SPF 50+ kind of day set the scene that began with a procession of 55,000 disciples on a pilgrimage to
see their spiritual advisor, their “Rap God”, Eminem at Western Springs on Saturday 15 Feb. Billed as Rapture 2014, it was a musically religious experience for most, a

sabbatical to the pearly gates of hip-hop heaven. With a few false starts on the final line up (Kendrick Lamar choosing Vanilla Ice over a bunch of loveable Kiwis), and Odd Future being a threat to national security (apparently), the slate was wiped cleaned for most concert goers, who in all fairness swayed and mimed along with only a small selection of songs from support acts 360, Action Bronson (who came out beard stroking to Patea Maori Clubs ‘Poi E’), J Cole and David Dallas (who received the most non - Marshall Mathers love for his performance of the Scribe - ‘Not Many’ remix and ‘Runnin’). Metal barriers parted the Lose Yourself Zone to the Red Sea… oops, I mean Red Zone and back to the Blue Zone on the terraces and hill, to what normally is littered with sprint cars on selected Saturday nights over summer, was littered with snapbacks, Slim Shady endorsed merchandise, an array of dress up costumes from those doing the double header of the NRL Nines and Rapture, plus the token basketball singlet wearing clones of pre-pubescence. The sun went down and the stage was lit with sloped runways, the band took their place and the crowd got to know each other a little bit more than perhaps they would like to with the preopening crowd swell. The teen/early 20’s contingent looking to hear the late 00’s aggression of the albums Relapse, Recovery and the current offering The Marshall Mathers LP 2 whilst there were plenty of more mature enthusiasts rocking the “I was there from the beginning” attitude that were that age back in
1999 when Eminem defined himself with the break through hit ‘My Name Is…’. After a lengthy wait Eminem exploded onto the stage with a thunderous roar from the legions of fans, with an energy and “fuck you” persona. He donned a camouflage jacket, hood up, ready to march into battle, which suited his leading song ‘Survival’. Marshall Mathers at 41 still seems like a very angry man. His sharp-witted tongue struck voraciously as he laid down his newer repertoire to a thirsty swarm looking for a schooling in his Detroit upbringing. ‘Kill You’, ‘White America’ and ‘Mosh’ sealed his tenacity before ‘Rap God’ proved that he is as much an amazing rapper in person as he is in the studio. Looking around Western Springs it was an illuminating sight of cellphones, fists raised in the air and the token hiphop head nod. A positive fan vibe from an abrasive performer. 60 minutes in and Slim Shady was not done, serving another 30 minute session concluding with lashings of his biggest anthems ever including ‘My Name Is…’, ‘The Real Slim Shady’ and ‘Without Me’ before proclaiming ‘I’m Not Afraid’ to which the lights went down and the glimmer of an encore loomed. Mathers returned to the stage one last time to offer his scripture, his ten commandments, his life lessons on being an MC with ‘Lose Yourself’ before disappearing into the night sky. An unforgettable experience that is hard to fault. Rapture 2014, resurrecting my faith in hip hop. NICK COLLINGS

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND MT SMART STADIUM AUCKLAND
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF REN KIRK
So, Bruce Springsteen started off his first New Zealand show in 11 years with Lorde’s ‘Royals’. It was a strangely sentimental, Nebraskian take on our biggest local hit. But my god, when the Boss dangled that patriotic carrot, 40,000 denim clad bogans nibbled from his sweaty palm for three straight hours. Representing all things honourable and true, wearing a waistcoat and a huge De Niro underbitegrin as big as New Jersey, Springsteen has just put on the best show I’ve ever seen. Bruce and the E Street Band really go for the gut. 14 members strong, the line-up includes the son of late sax player Clarence Clemons, Jake Clemons, and a very earnest, very Rage-like Tom Morello. Spontaneity was key on the night, the band playing sign requests and inviting ecstatic fan club members to dance on stage. A true man of the people, there’s
nothing like watching Bruce dance with a lovely old lady, then shaking his 64 year old booty with a wide eyed señorita. These natural, human interactions are what make good shows great. While I do stand by this being the best gig I’ve seen, there were some minor speed bumps. The first quarter relied heavily on his lacklustre Wrecking Ball material, and at times the arrangements were indulgent and bloated. But what else do you expect with the man who wrote ‘Jungleland’? A stellar run of ‘Atlantic City’, ‘The River’ and the Born in the USA album, from start to finish, instantly redeemed any uncertainty. This was the highest calibre of anthemic rock cheese imaginable, finishing with a lone, acoustic ‘Thunder Road’. An embarrassment of riches from an everyman millionaire, I gladly got my money’s worth and then some. Count with me now – hwun, hoo, hree, faw!! JAKE EBDALE

So was the overarching creative processes different to how/what you’ve done in the past? Not really, except this one just took so much longer that at times it gave my self-confidence pause.
Neko Case It’s a popular sentiment that songwriting, or any sort of writing, can be a restorative and healing process for someone going through a hard time. But eclectic singer songwriter Neko Case proves this isn’t always the case, after her latest record, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, came to life during a prolonged period of depression. Rather than letting her state of mind dictate the constructs for a similarly themed album, the straight talking, vivacious songs earned Case a second Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album category earlier this year. With emotive songs that range from contemplative commentaries on modern life through to self-reflexive tales wrapped in folklore-inspired metaphors, The Worse Things Get… is a fitting addition to Case’s solo catalogue. Along with releases such as Furnace Room Lullaby (2000), Fox Confessor Brings The Flood (2006) and 2009’s Middle Cyclone (for which she received her first Grammy nod), these albums have mapped the rise of a rare talent blessed with a bracing voice and an erudite way with country. Last here in 2011, Neko Case is back for a few shows as part of the New Zealand Festival, and managed to fit in a quick Q&A with Ren Kirk. How old were you when you decided you wanted music making to be your career? Probably 30. I “wanted” it before that but I would never admit that to myself. Haha! Did your upbringing and family life have any bearing on ending up in music? No, I was raised by two dogs and a space heater. Not kidding.
So how did you meet The New Pornographers and start working with them? I went to college in Vancouver BC Canada where they all lived at the time. The music scene was small, so we all met early on. What about the transition from drums to vocals - were you aware of having such a magnificent instrument at your disposal? I always liked singing, in fact, I liked it the most. I did both at the same time. I just wasn’t as passionate about drums. Your music as a solo artist is often described as country noir, indie rock, alt country, folk rock… but how do you describe your sound? Imagine I was deaf and could never hear your music for myself… All of that but no alt country. Where does this sound come from; on a personal level, inspiration from others, etc? It’s just the sound that comes from a lifetime of being inspired by all kinds of music. I really love the mouthful-of-a-name for your latest album, where did that come from? And did anyone suggest you shorten it at any stage? No, no one ever asked me to shorten it. It was the only phrase I could think of that could speak for the group of songs as a whole. Being in a different headspace to previous albums how did you find the writing process for this latest album? Long and difficult.
How did this diverse musicality come about for album opener ‘Wild Creatures’ - the percussion and interesting arrangements which sort of spill over on the stunning a capella centrepiece? I was striving for more dynamic than just “up tempo”, “mid tempo” and “Ballad” I wanted some 360. So how about the wistful “Calling Cards”, which seems to be a tale of longing? It’s a love song for my band mates. This album feels like the strangest —off-kilter arrangements and eccentric turns of phrase —but easily one of the best. How do you feel about it? I’m very happy with it. I’m happy that fans have been receptive to the more personal material especially. I am looking forward to harkening back to a more story telling format, it’s what brings me the most joy and satisfaction. It also feels much more heart-onyour sleeve than most of your back catalogue, would you agree? Yes. But I am not in the habit of writing personal songs, I much prefer writing stories. Was there anything particular that brought this about? I lost both my parents and my grandmother; it was time to grieve… which has no time limit that you can rely on. So looking to the future, what are you looking forward to this year? Touring, touring and more touring! And what has been your biggest learning over the last year? Don’t pack so damn much in my suitcase! I’m THE WORST.
