As K Road’s Wine Cellar hosts a Bob Dylan tribute night, the place will take on the dim mystique of a mid-’60s Greenwich Village bar as an assortment of New Zealand musicians combine their own material with their favourite Dylan tracks. Expect to see adventurous covers of some of your favourite songs given a country music twist.
The Queen of Soul brings her entirely unique blend of pop laced with hip-hop to Auckland. Badu has had some of the biggest names of hip-hop fall to their knees over her including Andre 3000, who famously wrote ‘Ms Jackson’ about her. With a voice that can’t be surpassed and charisma that will swell throughout the Civic, this is a must.
This youngster is taking the world by storm and is slowly becoming a household name. His sophomore album is produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, who has produced some of Johnny Cash and the Beastie Boys’ best works. The singer has a raw and restless energy, with a Dylanesque promise for big things to come.

Morcheeba make some of the most deliciously chilled out and catchy music known to humankind. The pioneering trip-hop trio were huge in the ‘90s and will be instantly recognizable to anyone alive-and-kicking at the time. Their lead singer Skye Edwards’s smoky voice has healing qualities and will flood the listener with nostalgic warmth.

Flip Grater has been on the road for nearly four years and has been busy recording and writing. An avid vegetarian she tours the world collecting recipes. Popular in France, she recorded her latest album in a smoky Parisian studio. The album is Pigalle and will hopefully have the same seedy charm and neon glow that the Paris suburb is famous for.

Jason Isbell has been to our shores before, here opening for the great Ryan Adams a few years back now. Isbell’s fame has grown since then and now he is here to tour his own album, the singer/guitarist is here with his full band playing a blend of Memphis blues and Nashville country.

Hugh Laurie is a man who can do just about anything. Having conquered both the British and American market as an actor, he is now concentrating on his musical career. His style is a mix of blues and music from the Americas. People will be happy to know that he has retained his wit and sprinkles his live shows with banter.
The John Butler Trio have always worked best as a live band and they let their music flow, expressing universal ideas. John Butler merges multiple styles and is incredibly vocal about important causes. His style and philosophy are perfectly suited to Aotearoa, so watch as he returns to his spiritual home.
The song ‘Rack City’ was unavoidable for a large part of last year. It was lucky then that the song happened to be pretty awesome. Tyga will be lighting up the Vodafone Events Centre, with the ambitious rapper following up his successful mixtapes with the album Hotel California. Let Tyga prove he is at the top of his rap game.

New Zealand is pushing above its weight in terms of creative output. This coming of age style indie drama was an official selection at Sundance this year. TV2, 7.30PM
Anyone familiar with the works of Lars von Trier will know that the man is no stranger to controversy and his newest release looks set to carry on the tradition. Full of both pretension and beauty, he is one of the last truly wild-card directors. This film stares unflinchingly at sex addiction through the life of a female protagonist.
The familiar story of Peter Parker has been given the Hollywood treatment again and there’s something about Spiderman that makes it enjoyable no matter how many retellings. Watch as the nerdy outsider turns to jaw dropping arachno-hero and of course gets the girl. This story goes more in depth into Parker’s family and what makes him tick.

GUTTER BLACK: A MEMOIR DAVE MCARTNEY
Dave McArtney, founding member of Hello Sailor, may have passed away but for those interested in the turbulent times of one of New Zealand’s most renowned groups his memoir is available at last. The book, which McArtney was working on for well over a decade is clearly a labour of love. It will document the band’s sometimes sordid reputation for delving into partying and drugs. They were considered one of the more dangerous, truly rock and roll bands from Auckland at the time. In an almost prophetic way, the book was completed only weeks before his untimely death. Let the memoir also serve as a history of pre-gentrified Ponsonby and the music scene of the time.

KIKI BEWARE

344 GEORGE ST
48 LONDON ST, LYTTELTON
DUNEDIN
CHRISTCHURCH
Light and floral, Kiki Beware has the carefree ambiance that so many cafés strive to create. The café is cool in both its hipdesign and springtime feel upon entering. Art covers the walls and every piece of decoration and furniture looks handpicked with precision to add mood to the place. The café serves Supreme Coffee, which is always a good start and has enough sitting space, either on tables or stools at the bar to offer shelter from Dunedin’s cold climate. The food offered up is getting a good name for itself amongst the students, with the salmon bagels a popular favourite.
Lyttleton, tucked into the hills just out of Christchurch and espousing a community spirit, is fast becoming the hip centre of the South Island. The bar retains much of its interesting history and this is where much of its charm springs. The bar was originally a fruit shop owned by a Mr. Chang in the early part of last century and most of the atmosphere-adding furniture has been saved from these days. The bar has become a hub for the burgeoning folk and country scene spilling out of Lyttelton. This coupled with the fine craft beers has made this the beacon of the suburb’s cultural renaissance.

Le Garde-Manger is branching out from its original Queen Street spot, opening up another location across town. The place is quintessential French with checkered tablecloths, French wine and intimate dining. Eat a meal or a quick crepe while enjoying some banter from the waitresses then stumble out and pretend it’s midnight in Paris.
Good Italian food is hard to come by in New Zealand, especially food that is affordable and outside the standard spaghetti Bolognese or slice of pizza. La Bottega Bakery in Kingsland is reasonably priced and authentic (in both food and design). Their courtyard is a perfect place to devour a mouth melting pastry made fresh by their Italian chefs.

The Portland Public House has the power to always seem packed. Perhaps this is because the place feels like a villa that just happened to get converted into a pub overnight. This lively and atmospheric pub serves a good variety of interesting beers and food and has live music most evenings of the week.
Wellington does cafés well! So when a café gets regular acclaim and is voted best café in town on numerous occasions you know it must be something special. Memphis Belle Coffee House take their coffee seriously and serve such a range of drinks your head will be buzzing before you’ve taken your first sip.

and gives me one in the throat,” he says with a laugh. “It was great fun.” There’s definitely no hard feelings though. Callan sings Evans’s praises for his ability as an actor, particularly in the physical scenes.
Our Kiwi Superhero MORE THAN A DECADE AGO, ACTOR CALLAN MULVEY CHEATED DEATH. NOW HE’S TAKING ON CAPTAIN AMERICA IN THE NEW SEQUEL, THE WINTER SOLDIER. He’s starred in back-to-back Hollywood blockbusters, sharing the screen with A-listers including Chris Evans, Oscar winner Robert Redford and Scarlett Johansson, yet in true Kiwi fashion, actor Callan Mulvey is exceptionally humble about the hype that surrounds him – he’s just glad to be working. “I’m excited to have a bit of ‘heat’, if you like, because work begets work and a lot of this industry is about hype,” he drawls in a thick Australian accent, a result of moving to Sydney with his parents at age eight. “I’m loving it.” From a supporting role in 300: Rise of an Empire, to securing a role in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the 39-year-old’s evolution from small screen spots on the likes of Home and Away, McLeod’s Daughters and Underbelly to silver screen success is developing in the right direction. But it’s been a journey that’s taken more than a decade of blood, sweat and tears to get Callan where he is today. In 2003, he was involved in a horrific head-on collision at 100km/ hr, leaving him trapped in the car for almost an hour. The accident required Callan to undergo extensive facial reconstruction after the midsection of his face collapsed. He was also blind in one eye and the left side of his body crushed. He is lucky to be alive. Now, talking to Callan about his latest movie role, his passion for working – particularly in physical roles – is
apparent as he’s still counting his lucky stars to be able to do what he loves. “Sometimes my ankle and knee give me a bit of grief, but I’m happy to have a leg to complain about,” he admits. “I keep myself fit and I train a lot, so my body is in pretty good shape.” Ironically, his willingness to get roughed up a bit is what landed him the Captain America role that’s set to propel him into stardom. It began in early 2012, when Callan unsuccessfully auditioned for another Marvel movie, Iron Man 3. Despite the setback, his relationship with the studio wasn’t over. He was called back to the casting couch to audition for CA:TWS directors Anthony and Joe Russo. He was auditioning for the character Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, which eventually went to Frank Grillo, but last March, Callan was awarded the part of Jack Rollins, which he says “took me by surprise, but I was stoked.” For six months, Callan was immersed in the world of Captain America. Much like 300, there was little CGI in the fight scenes, with the actors and stunt doubles involved in choreographed sequences of hand-to-hand combat. But as SHIELD agent Jack Rollins, Callan was often on the receiving end of a good right hook, notably in a close quarters elevator scene with Captain America himself (Chris Evans). “I keep in shape generally, so we just had a couple of sessions learning whatever moves I had to do, which essentially just meant me getting punched in the face and falling on my arse. [Evans] blocks both my punches
“Apparently he can be shown a 25move fight scene twice and he’ll have it down pat perfectly. The stunt guys love him and think he’s a freak, because he’s so quick at picking up it up. That’s what you want – the more stunts you can get the actor doing, the easier it is to suspend the audience’s disbelief.” It’s obvious, chatting to Callan, that while he enjoys dramatic features, his passion for putting his body on the line is something he’s always chasing. And he’s not the only one that’s happier for it, with his wife of three years, Rachel Thomas, enjoying the results of his hard work. “I sent her a couple of pics from the set [of 300]. There was one picture she now has as her background on her phone and she was like, ‘See honey? This is where it needs to stay.’ Jokingly, of course, but she loves it. She’s just happy to see me working. Rachel is a massive part of why I am in the position that I’m in. She’s integral to my success.” With the couple already living “completely unattached” to any longterm plan, Callan’s new-found fame will no doubt make it even harder to be together as much as they’d like. But with potential offers flying in for blockbuster roles, including Zack Synder’s upcoming Batman vs Superman movie, Callan’s more than happy to keep riding the wave of success for as long as possible. “We’re in talks,” he says, coyly. “I am waiting with anticipation to see what they’re doing…I’m frustratedly waiting to hear. I love working, as long as it is challenging and I grow as a performer.” LAURA WEASER
