Some bands use all their creative juices coming up with a name with little left for the actual music. Luckily Sex Pest have a jaw-dropping name with the sound to boot. As you’d imagine, the band are a controversy magnet and what better place to pay your last respects than Whammy Bar, which when packed has the walls sweating and people moshing like crazy.
The Arctic Monkeys have evolved from awkward scruffy ruffians into a full-on stadium filling band with lead singer Alex Turner crooning with rock star swagger. The content of their songs may have morphed from juvenile antics to more sophisticated interests but Turner’s wit is still as sharp as ever. One of the tightest bands performing at the moment.

Starting off as a busker on the chilly Scottish streets she hit the mainstream through an incredible performance on Later With Jools Holland which cemented her reputation for highly infectious rhythms, beats and steamy vocals. K’rd’s The Studio will be hosting her as she performs her new album that has stunned critics with her new altcountry direction.
DUNEDIN
8PM, $40, UTR.CO.NZ
The band have just released a new album 46 Missed Calls, which uses violin and keyboard to create their own unique Indie-rock sound. The band hails from LA but contains a local Kiwi component. Some of the new songs were penned by NZ’s own poet David Eggleton. The band is touring the country with a host of exciting support acts.
If hardcore metal is your buzz, then Ringworm should be top of your to-do list. Reigning kings of the destructive genre, the band have been extensively touring while also finding time to record a new album. Expect blazing guitars and thrashing riffs. Ringworm show newcomers to the genre what hardcore metal should be.

Two of the great heavyweights of beat production will be collaborating at the Powerstation. This is a must to any hiphop head who thinks the 90s was the golden age of rap. DJ Premier was one half of legendary group Gangstarr and producer of genre-defining songs (Nas’ ‘New York State of Mind’). Pete Rock rose to prominence with partner CL Smooth and has collaborated with rap’s biggest names.
9PM, $45, UTR.CO.NZ
Ahoribuzz are back and will be kicking off New Zealand Music Month in Wellington. Their new single ‘Providence’ has been described as their most dance orientated funk jam to date. Their music is inherently Kiwi and seems to seep as naturally from the land as water from a stream. Regulars on the festival circuit, this collective know how to have a good time.
Bronx native AG, founding member of D.I.T.C (Digging In The Crate) with notable alumni including Big L and Fat Joe, is heading to New Zealand. He is linking up with one of the premier turntablists DJ Total Eclipse. This will be an important event for Hip-Hop purists who recognize a true master of the Boom-Bap when they see one. Quality local acts will be there in support.

This could be Auckland’s answer to Raggamuffin for those that need their reggae fix.
The bearded philosopher Arthur Ahbez makes sweeping psychadelia that warmly summons comparisons to folk singers of the hippie era. Raglan’s Yot Club, an accessible escape from the city hustle is the perfect setting for Ahbez’ uplifting voice which has the power to fill a room and enchant an audience. BRING IT ON SKY MOVIES GREATS, 8.30PM
Any girl worth her salt should be able to recite the opening cheer that kicks off this teen classic. Iconic and extremely re-watchable, Bring It On has spawned many imitations and cheesy spin-offs but the original is indelible and a landmark of the teen-flick genre. It’s a rite of passage for angst-ridden teens and a guilty pleasure for everyone else.

TALKS MUSIC: BLONDIE
SOHO, 2.40PM
ARTS CHANNEL, 9.25PM
Matthew McConaughey is so hot right now and with an Oscar already under his belt, True Detective is the icing on the cake. An interesting take on the classic buddy-drama, McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play detectives with considerable character faults who hit the voodoo ridden bayous of Louisiana searching for an occultist killer. A genuinely scary bromance.
Blondie, the sexy new-wave starlet made the rise from CGBG waitress to queen of the stage. Debbie Harry was destined for fame and success, and has revolutionized pop music with her sassy vocals, blending of hip-hop into rock and her punk attitude. Talks Music takes a look at her career and how Parallel Lines thrust the NY post-punk scene into the spotlight.

One of the world’s most famous cartoons clearly still has something new to offer a modern audience. A cat’s hatred for a mouse that he will never catch has been leaving audiences conflicted for decades over who to root for. Watch as poor old Tom gets a hammering for following his natural instincts while that cheeky little mouse taunts him.
Genuine curiosity: Does anyone actually talk to their mum like that? The outrageously witty mother/daughter duo lasted seven seasons during which they shared their every inner thought and learnt from each other along the way. The muchloved show will run in its entirety on Vibe so fall into nostalgia with one of the great comfort-shows.

FUTURAMA (S10) COMEDY CENTRAL, 7PM
Futurama has amazed audiences with its ability to be successful without the obligatory comparisons to The Simpsons. Back for its tenth season, the show has managed to poke fun at modern life by imagining the future we are making for ourselves. The show has always managed to be hilarious while also being chillingly profound.
Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, an unlikely pairing star in Bad Neighbours, a film by the director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. It is about two warring households, one a young family with a newborn, the other a college fraternity. It’s received good reviews, including praise for Efron’s acting ability (surprisingly).

Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton are the latest actors to switch Hollywood for the small screen, they’ve volunteered to shoulder the considerable pressure that comes with reinterpreting one of the Coen brothers’ most successful films. The show looks at the darkness that exists within a small parochial American town and the families that make up the town.
LIVE FROM THE ARTISTS DEN ARTS CHANNEL, 8.30PM
Iron and Wine have been on the indie folk scene for quite a while now, perhaps best known for their agonizingly beautiful rendition of The Postal Service’s ‘From Such Great Heights.’ In this episode watch as the band perform in Atlanta’s Buckhead Theatre. A venue specifically chosen by the band for its personal significance and unique setting.
The grisly realities of SeaWorld are exposed in this documentary, which looks at the psychological damage of whales held in captivity. The film focuses on Tilikum and looks at the sinister consequences of his capture including the death of his trainer. The film has received rave reviews and is likely to change the way you look at killer whales.

The NZ International Comedy Festival is back and with it comes Sam Simmons, the lord of Australian suburban absurdism. He’s just performed on the Conan O’Brien show in the US, so expect big things. He’s won a host of awards and has been called a genius and compared to The Mighty Boosh. He’s an Aussie so he’ll be easy to laugh at anyway.
Free events don’t come much better than this. Through art Helen Mechen displays her love of nature. She has a fascination with looking at the world through a microscope, mixing scale and colour into her works, using the miraculous beauty that surrounds us for inspiration. Her paintings will be displayed in the treehouse at Wellington’s Botanic Gardens.
Ladies Night is some of New Zealand’s best comedy and has returned to Auckland’s stage. The show follows a group of lads who take to stripping only to find out it’s a lot harder than they had first imagined. Watch as they wax, wiggle and gyrate towards a crescendo of hilarity. The Gus Fisher Gallery sits uncomfortably on Shortland Street surrounded by staunch law firms. They offer mind-expanding contemporary art. The Blank Stare is a film consisting of five rooms where beings/creatures are connected by a fixed look. Dealing with haunting imagery and magical daydreams the work is worth viewing and will leaving you pondering for a long time after.
DUNEDIN
This event works as a commemoration of Anzac and the centenary of World War one, with symphonies designed to pluck the audience’s heartstrings, Composers from New Zealand and Australia will perform. The compositions are influenced by acts of human violence that have occurred throughout history. The beauty of the music works as a tribute to the humanity of those that were lost.

There are few stand-ups that can make a crowd of thousands slide off their seats with laughter before saying a word. What job pays nothing, leaves you no time to sleep and requires a degree in cooking and medicine? You guessed it! The hardest job of them all - being a mother. We all love our mums, so luckily the kind people at Hallmark greeting cards have invented a day where we all get to appreciate the supreme effort they’ve put in throughout our lives. Yay for mums!
Needless to say, you don’t get to see the real Pink Floyd and U2 for 35 bucks out in Royal Oak, but fret not, this event is a sensory experience of mindbending power featuring laser beams, high resolution projections and the double feature of Wish You Were Here and U2’s Greatest Hits. Sorry kids, this event promises to be such a kick it’s for adults only.

Whether it’s Auckland’s grunge inspired punk, Wellington’s funkier grooves or the toe-tapping folk-country of Lyttleton. Indie Magazine have made it their duty to leave no stone unturned in their hunt to expose the hidden gems, for whom fame seems a far-off dream. People who produce music for its own sake free from commercialization. Indie Magazine gives these bands a voice, profiling a selection of the best bands, the magazine is free and gives people no excuse not to discover the bounty of bands available in this fair country.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS JOHN GREEN
The fourth book by John Green, the novel tells the story of 16-year-old cancer patient Hazel and her relationship with Augustus, a 17-year-old amputee. The novel has received glowing reviews and the film adaptation is in the works. The novel is powerful for its balance of melancholy scenes and humorous warmth. Love lives in all life.

WELLINGTON
A part of the regeneration that is going on in the up-town area of Auckland, the newly hip sheds on Wellesley have become a hub for busy townies. The Food Truck is one of the many success stories of the area, providing healthy fast food that is fun and cheap. The wedges called ‘Bakes’ are mouth wateringly delicious and the simple selection of burgers mean that each option has been perfected. It’s a great up and coming area of town where teens and workers mingle easily. Wine and beer are available and they serve Hallertau on tap, which is always a good sign.
The Hunter Lounge is located in Victoria University’s Student Union Building and they’re setting the standard for cheap drinks — Us poor students are living on a pittance after all. So rather than staying at home filtering methylated spirits through a sock, why not head on down to the University’s premium bar and indulge in $3.50 handles and $20 superjugs. The bar is a perfect place to unwind after a hard fought day of lectures and could even work for a sneaky study date. The place serves affordable food and lets you enjoy student life without the nuisance of class getting in the way.

Malaysian food may be the perfect Asian cuisine, an amalgamation of cultures and tastes. The Long Bar serves authentic Malaysian food and being located in the CBD has a vibrant buzz to it especially around lunchtime. There are plenty of vegetarian options and the place has deservedly earned its reputation as a top eatery due to its great service and extensive drink list.
Located in the heart of the Victoria Quadrant, Sale St is a big bar that somehow manages to feel intimate at the same time. The bar has a selection of award-winning microbrewery beers and live music on Fridays and Sundays to celebrate both the end and beginning of the working week. Resident band The Beat Council gets the mood just right, packing out the dance floor.
Laundry is another example of how well Wellington does edgy and interesting bars. Operating with a community focus, the bar was started by four mates. They describe themselves as a ‘Juke Joint’, which basically means the place will be simple and unpretentious playing live music in a chill atmosphere. During NZ Music Month be sure to check our Rhombus in Dub and many more.
The place is pure New York-inspired ambience with cozy corners for intimate conversations and a fine range of gourmet pizzas. The franchise is spreading across the South Island and is a huge success with the locals. While it oozes American charm it keeps itself grounded to Aotearoa with a great selection of local wines and beers.

ELENA AUCKLAND/WELLINGTON/NELSON
This documentary has picked up a wide selection of awards as it toured the festival circuit of its native Brazil. Like Out Of Tune, this film deals with a Brazilian leaving her home for the opportunities of New York. The film creates a cinematic rendering of memory through the mesmerising poetry of the street.

TATTOO (TATUAGEM)
With the football World Cup around the corner and the host nation as strong favourites to take home the coveted trophy, this film couldn’t be any more relevant. For all lovers of sport this film documents the rivalry that can exist between competing teams. Here it is between the two largest Brazilian clubs. The film features high emotion from avid supporters.

Reel Brazil The Fifth
Film Festival
Set in the aftermath of Brazil’s military dictatorship, this story documents artists who attempt to shift the moral conventions of Brazil. The story shows how art can be used to lift people out of the despair that brews in poor surroundings. The film is bright and playful; it could be hailed as the Priscilla Queen of the Desert of Brazil.

Kimbra
THE DRIVE FROM Wellington to New Plymouth took considerably longer than expected. By Hawera I was getting really concerned we weren’t going to make our 2:30pm appointment. Beside me, my daughter McKenzie, my ‘cub reporter’, was frantically texting the WOMAD publicist to buy more time. Despite the ticking clock and the speedo needle rising rapidly into the illegal section, McKenzie sat calmly reading out stats and facts about our interviewee. A little over two years ago, she reminded me, that just like Lorde, most of us hadn’t heard of Kimbra Lee Johnson. Yet when she was nominated, along with singercollaborator Gotye for a Grammy for the song ‘Someone I Used to Know’, we all sat up and took notice. What is it about Kiwi female singers that captures the world’s imagination? Perhaps it has something to do with that DIY mentality that we all grew up with. After all, Kimbra wrote and recorded her debut Vows in her Melbourne flat and a minuscule studio in North Richmond. “It was the product of many, many ideas, all fragments and tiny little snatches of songs,” she told us later in the tranquil garden setting of New Plymouth’s Nice Hotel. With seconds to spare, we’d thrown the car into the nearest park and sprinted up the hill to the venue. While we were a little flustered, Kimbra, on the other hand, was relaxed and composed. Dressed in a green refashioned vintage dress, hair and makeup conservative but still glamorous, she was completely different from from outrageous stage persona.
“I feel it’s important to sell my music up there, it creates the illusion and fantasy which is important. It’s part of the whole package. Wait to you see my show tonight!” she promised, “that will surprise you!” And it did! Performing for the first time at WOMAD, Kimbra arrived in royal style dressed in a shimmering white synth-fibre cloak, high-heeled fluffy slippers and a multi coloured tutu. “We’ll play a number of songs from Vows a little bit differently tonight, not so people feel uncomfortable but definitely challenged. Plus I’ll add in a couple of new ones from the album I’m making.” Ah, yes the new album. Kimbra tells me she’s been holed up in LA working with a variety of collaborators including Daniel Johns, Dave Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), Reuben Neilson (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), and abstract beat wizards Flying Lotus and Thundercat, whom she’s raving about today. “He’s got these amazing beats; each artist adds something of their own to the record. I didn’t just want session musicians who’d play what I wrote. I got inspired by those around me. Daniel and I were into the electric harp, so we sat around all day playing little tunes, working out different sequences, until stuff stuck. I also got (soul singer) John Legend in for a number - I like to have variety, to mix up ideas within songs.” Kimbra has described her work as ‘pop-prog’ “I get asked that a lot”, she laughs, “I mean - it’s a combination of weird time signatures, classic girlgroup sing-alongs and progressive, experimental music.”
Kimbra’s new album is a sort of journey involving multiple locations. First, with ‘Wally’ deBacker (Gotye) in a Melbourne, and a “huge bunch of cool instruments like Critter and Guitari pocket pianos, Yamaha strings and stompers, and all this stuff he collects up.” Then after flying over to the States for the Grammys she set up shop in LA. “It’s a very glossy town for a Kiwi. Everyone’s an actor,” she laughs in a false Californian accent. “I was just hangin’ out to meet a plumber, you know?” Relocated, she began writing beats, inspired by Flying Lotus, who eventually contributed, and built up a “palette of music” to ping-pong around producers and collaborators, including Silverchair’s Daniel Johns. She met Johns as part of an Adelaide festival project, which involved a 35-piece orchestra, a week of song-writing and learning Bulgarian vocal scales. She’s on record as calling it all a “three day psychedelic experience.” That work was for Johns’s solo project but the experience was so positive Kimbra called him over to LA to help her out, where she’d been working with producer Rick Costey. Others to walk in include The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and The Dillinger Escape plan, especially Ben Weinmen who laid down some funky Latin guitars on a few tracks. Also involved were Morris Hayes (keyboardist for Prince’s New Power Generation), and John Robinson, who is probably the most-recorded session drummer ever. Despite the large number of players Kimbra claims that her studio did not have an open door policy. “Part of being in that town was about getting in all this creativity, it’s inspiring.” That night, McKenzie saw Kimbra on stage for the first time. Her outrageous vocal gymnastics and flamboyant costumes brought a high level of drama to the WOMAD stage that knocked the socks of at least one little girl! LA has been a creative time for Kimbra. Two new songs in her set show the promise of more edgy, schizophrenic pop, setting expectations high for her new album, which Kimbra promises will be here soon. And that, no doubt, will be worth breaking a few more road rules for. TIM GRUAR
