To make things even more interesting, he then made a comparison using the first 5000 words from seven of William Shakespeare’s works. Of the 85 rappers analysed, the top three reads: Aesop Rock - 7392, GZA (solo albums only) - 6426, Kool Keith - 6239. William Shakespeare - 5170, Moby Dick by Herman Melville - 6022.

The Shocking Pinks have achieved more than most local acts throughout their career. Starting in 2004, they joined an elite group of artists to have the honour of signing with Flying Nun records. Later on they were signed to New York label DFA, home of LCD Soundsystem. Their music mixes the buzzing guitars of shoegaze with dance-punk, blasting a sensual pink sound that floats through the venue until you can feel it in your belly.

BLACKLISTT THE MAYFAIR NEW PLYMOUTH 8PM, $40, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ

Blacklistt are one of New Zealand’s most iconic metal bands. The band consists of most the members of the pioneering Blindspott and they have retained their dynamic intensity when performing live. They are touring this month with many of their flapship members. Including Che Fu, Savage and the Deceptikonz. More than a mere show this is to recognize of the supreme work this label has done throughout the years.

8PM, $85, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Kimbra is a lucky girl, through a chance encounter after the Montreaux Jazz festival she is now embarking on a tour with Janelle Monae one of the hottest names in R&B and the moment. Monae’s first two albums have received rave reviews channeling supernatural cyborg soul/funk into incredibly danceable numbers. Her songs feature a weirdness, which is refreshing in the pop-genre. This will be her first time in New Zealand.

Responsible for some of the defining tracks of the 80s and having been described by NIN’s Trent Reznor as ‘vitally important’ there is no better time to see this legend performing in the flesh. A band that never seems to quite get the massive respect that they so seriously deserve, The Phoenix Foundation are perhaps New Zealand’s premier live act. This is their first tour in a year and a great opportunity to embrace their mystical pop and lush big band sound. With a new drummer they are pushing their sound into new directions, but have certainly lost none of their mind melting grooviness.

Back by popular demand after their knockout 2012 tour, these ska legends are returning with an all-star cast that will provide a serious skanking session for the lucky concert goers. Typifying the British ska sound similar to other acts such as The Specials or Madness, the band effortlessly blended the rhythmic sensibilities of reggae and ska with the energy of punk creating hypnotically danceable beats.

If you didn’t think that mime could be funny, then clearly you’ve been watching the wrong absurdist comics. Trygve Wakenshaw, a trained clown, is in New Zealand having won critical acclaim with sold out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Your house is on fire, what do save? Firstly; the flatmates (hero). Next up; all of my flatmates’ good possessions, which I then tell them were destroyed in the fire (genius). Favourite ‘90s TV show? This exhibition by the celebrated Dutch photographer, was shown at last year’s Venice Biennale, regarded as one of the greatest showcases of contemporary art. The photos look at what is at the essence of Africa; the vivid colours, contrasts and scenes. There is a sense of lost kinship between Sassen and Africa, feeling at home while also alien from the inhabitants of the land she documents.

RAGLAN/AA 10AM-4.30PM, DOOR SALES ONLY

Three well known and highly regarded sculptors will be exhibiting stone sculptures at the Raglan Museum. The sculptors are Richard Page, Tai Meuli and Gene Pospisil. The artists have done a variety of public works, many focusing around the Raglan community. The works of the artists are of an increasing size and will be a breathtaking way to see sculpture of a large scale.

If you weren’t a comedian, what would you be? A fire truck. Ultimate festival line-up? Hmm. Tom Waits doing his entire back catalogue in chronological order. Holy shit, that would be an endurance test… Who would play you in a film? Jason Statham, because in my mind, that’s how badass I look now that I’m bald. How do you discover new comedians? New comedians? As in comics that I’ve never seen before and are thus new to me? Friends’

recommendations or stumbling onto them at a comedy club. But if you mean new – as in rookie – comedians, then head to an open mic night. Laugh in the silences. We call it Chump Thumping. It’s fun. Worst job you’ve had? I worked for a golf course construction crew in Australia for six months. It was the best job in that I got to drive dump trucks and bobcats all day. It was the worst job in that most of the other guys there were on the glass BBQ all day. They’d just get high and dig holes. Really fast. Biggest fear? My furniture becoming selfaware. First comedy gig in attendance? My first comedy night in attendance was also my first comedy night performing. Both the chicken and the egg came at the same exact time, if you will. JIMMY THE FISH

EL HORNO

PONSONBY CENTRAL

30 COURTENAY PL

AUCKLAND

WELLINGTON

In the midst of Ponsonby Central is a fish and chip store with all the cheer of a local take-away but the quality of a fine restaurant. Don’t expect ample servings, but the chips are golden and hand cut. Jimmy Gerard, the owner has a good reputation around Auckland, churning out wisecracks as well as succulent fish. The store doesn’t take up a huge amount of space and seating is limited. People come here either to buy fresh fish or to have it fried up on the spot. The menu is constantly changing and not only do they offer the traditional battered fish, but also a clam pasta dish and a variety of other delicious fish and seafood options.

Tucked into the bustle of Courtenay Place is this cozy Hispanic- inspired bar where the Sangria flows and people are partying like it’s summer and they’re cruising down Barcelona’s La Rambla. El Horno, which may sound filthy but actually means ‘the furnace’, is dedicated to getting the vibe cranking, with free cowboy hats on Saturday nights and a bar that is just begging to be danced on. The bar is available to be booked for events and can hold up to 100 guests, with cocktails and canapés galore. Let this spicy bar be Wellington’s answer to the Euro-trip blues.

The Portlander is a grill house but it’s also so much more. Striving to understand what is meant by modern kiwi kai, they go to where the sea meets the land plucking the best ingredients from our fertile land. They back up their cuisine with a thorough knowledge of New Zealand’s produce, all set in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.

This Chinese restaurant is located in the heart of Riccarton. Joyful is charming and modern with great bang for your buck. They pride themselves on on their quality and service, with the chefs ensuring each meal is cooked to perfection. Joyful is an institution, having been going for over 25 years with a solid amount of regulars.

DOC bar may have closed but in its place has opened a new eatery/bar that retains much of the K’rd establishments original cosy vibe and Coopers beer remains behind the bar. Located smack bang in the infamous street’s steamy centre, the spot serves tap beer from the Hallertau brewery – one of Auckland’s finest beers. Peach Pit is up until late.

The Phoenix is Tauranga’s newest Monteith’s bar next to Masonic park in The Strand. Appropriate to the name, the bar has risen from the ashes of a destructive fire that nearly 100 years ago turned the area into ash. The bar retains much of the character of the original Horny Bull, the famous restaurant that once stood there. A perfect spot to cool off.

Gaming

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 XBOX 360

Web slinging across New York City. Beating the crap out of criminals. Tracking down the murderer of your Uncle Ben. Set this in an open world with heaps of collectables, some great costumes, plenty of upgradable skills, and Kraven the Hunter; it could have been the Spider-Man game we’ve all wanted to play. But this is a movie tie-in. So, like ninety-nine percent of all movie tie-ins that came before, it’s disappointing. Swinging through New York should be thrilling – yet with no epic, cinematic, slow-motion tracking shots, it all feels a little small here. But it is fun. That is, if you don’t mind constantly slamming face first into high-rise buildings. Although using the triggers to control the web-shooters works okay, with the camera going a bit skewed, even with plenty of practice you constantly end up hanging upside down off the side of a building or, even worse, falling into the middle of a strangely empty New York City street. Not a good look for a superhero. When you get to the missions in the game, it all gets very familiar. The first thing you’ll have to do is fight through some henchmen. And there are a lot of henchmen to fight. Not many different ones, just a lot of them. While button mashing will get you through on ‘Human’ difficulty, to beat the bad guys on ‘Hero’ or ‘Superhero’ difficulty you’ll need to use your web shooters, evasion, and spidey-sense. Essentially, spidey-sense means bad guys flash red just before they hit you. It’s all pretty straightforward. Compared to the big budget, 3D, slow-motion CGI movies, there is no comparison. The graphics, gameplay, and voice acting is serviceable, but hardly ‘amazing’ as the title would suggest. It doesn’t help that the characters don’t resemble the movie actors either. For instance, Spider-Man is kind of muscular and chunky, not the lean Andrew Garfield version we see in the film. On top of this there is nothing to do online and frustrating load times. While the collectable comic books and costumes add value, it is disappointing when collectables are the best thing in a game. Unfortunately we’re still waiting for that ‘amazing’ SpiderMan game. DENE BENHAM

ACTIVISION TO SPEND HALF A BILLION ON DESTINY Activision Blizzard intends to spend $500 million developing and promoting Destiny, potentially breaking industry records as it seeks to build the sci-fi role-playing videogame into its next multibillion-dollar franchise. CEO Bobby Kotick revealed the number, which dwarfs Hollywood spending on some of its biggest firms, during the Milken conference in Los Angeles last week. A company spokesperson said on Monday that the number was accurate but also included marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and other costs. Activision, eyeing the flagging growth of its long-running Call of Duty action-shooter franchise, is eager to lay the foundation for its next multi-game blockbuster series. Investors hope that Destiny, scheduled for release on September 9 from Bungie, the same studio that created Microsoft’s best-selling Halo franchise, could re-invigorate Activision’s revenue, which slid 6 percent in 2013. The company signed a 10-year contract with Bungie in 2010 that gives it worldwide distribution rights and significant control over the potential franchise’s development.

STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 3 FOR E3 EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson said that the company will show off more of the much-anticipated Star Wars Battlefront 3, the game it briefly revealed with a teaser around a year ago. The original Star Wars Battlefront 2 was released back in 2005 to critical praise from most gaming syndicates around the world. Polygon reports that as well as an update on the status of their Frostbite-engine (via Battlefront 3), EA will also reveal other projects the company currently has in development claiming they will have “up to six titles” at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) next month. E3 2014, one the largest annual electronics and gaming expos, runs from the 10 - 12 June in Los Angeles, California. Star Wars Battlefront 3 is anticipated to be released early next year.

raw and rock-orientated Thickfreakness are completely different to what they were back then. The new release is sexier, sleeker and more produced than everything that came before it. It’s been over ten years and they’ve established themselves with a sound and style but have been growing within those parameters.

The Black Keys IT’S BEEN THREE years since the Black Keys’ last album El Camino came out and the rockers (who are: Dan Auerbach on vocals, guitars and everything that isn’t percussive, and Patrick Carney manning the percussive of the double act), have returned with Turn Blue. Three years can be a long time in the music industry, with new acts releasing new music what seems like every week, but it’s safe to say that the Black Keys have returned on form. So much so that if their fans had strayed, they’ll come back for this record. Turn Blue certainly isn’t El Camino part two. For one, the tracks are noticeably longer and where El Camino has more groove in ‘Gold On The Ceiling’, Turn Blue, with ‘Weight Of Love’, the album opener and longest track, is more meandering in its approach. Largely instrumental for the first two minutes, the vocal performance is almost like Broken Bells’ After The Disco. I’ve given into the temptation to focus on their catalogue to see how they got here. This is, after all, album

number eight and while Brothers would have been the first obvious choice (they’re so good at what they do that even the noodling of ‘Weight Of Love’ is still pure Black Keys), the Grammys following El Camino was a goldmine for the band with them taking Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song (‘Lonely Boy’) as well as well as Auerbach being honoured as the producer of the year (non-classical, obviously). The journey is as important as the end result. Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton produced the album, along with Brothers and El Camino. Perhaps it’s become Burton’s signature sound but the Broken Bells vibe makes this album shine. The similarities are uncanny but that’s not to say that either of them are imitating the other. ‘In Time’ is the most obvious example and carries over onto ‘Bullet In The Brain’, but the guitars are far more blues rock. It’s still the The Black Keys and it still feels like The Black Keys. What is apparent, however, is that the men behind the

Turn Blue is by no means an album stuck in its style. In some ways, it’s as much as a journey as listening to the catalogue. For example, ‘10 Lovers’ has a more synth and electronic vibe than what you’d find on ‘Gotta Get Away’, a rock-oriented track. It’s one of the rawest examples, vocally and musically. It’s a change of tone but doesn’t come in as raw the duo’s earlier material. Nonetheless, it fits right in and that’s and when you have three producers – Auerbach produced Lana Del Rey and Dr. John and Carney produced Tennis and The Sheepdogs – you can expect an album that’s going to be able to move through the genres without feeling like an attack of madness. The production is so slick, the vocals (that falsetto, holy hell), and their use of the full repertoire of Auerbach’s musical talent is nothing like we’ve seen come out of the Black Keys. It’s double-edged in that it can detract from the lyrics and pull your attention more to Burton’s mastery in the studio. When it doesn’t pull you away there’s Auerbach’s divorce and cleverly phrased observations about the world, “you’ve never seen a singer without that word sin.” What we’re given is an album that has relished the touch of Danger Mouse, has taken that three-year gap seriously, and two musicians who can pull away from their catalogue and paradoxically create something that fits. Turn Blue is an exploration what has come and where they can go. The album is almost a reinvention. The Black Keys have found themselves in a new and exploratory direction, it’ll be interesting to see what comes next. SEBASTIAN MACKAY
