Shooting their roots into the hardcore scene of the notorious 90s, they have reformed recently leaving their previous troubles behind them. They will be touring an album due later this year. Check their rock and rolling version of The Boss’s I’m on Fire, to get a sense for what this show promises. Named after a Nine Inch Nail’s song, the band will bring their head banging anthems back to the Kings Arms.

Back with their sophomore release, this London based Kiwi band is big on fiery intensity. The history behind the album shows the band’s new international philosophy, recorded and mixed across all spheres of the globe. Sweat and tears have gone into this album, making it bigger and heavier than their last. They’re sure to convert that blistering energy onto the stage as they tour NZ.

The greatest living songwriter, he really needs no introduction. Addicted to touring, he has made New Zealand a regular stop on his nomadic travels from stadium to stadium. His voice may have remolded, his skin has sagged and he may have taken to playing unrecognizable covers of his own songs but to see him in the flesh is to get a glimpse of a man who changed the face of popular music forever. An absolute must.

HAMILTON

The ever-eclectic Ben Howard is gracing these shores for the first time, the British songwriter has amassed a solid cult-like following for his fingerpickingly good performances and highly acclaimed first album (after a string of quality EPs). Besides Glastonbury festival, he will be heading this way from Splendor in the Grass. His contemporary folk style is both mesmerizing and uplifting.

Playing for the first time in Auckland, this band has been generating a hearty buzz. Unique is the best way to describe this ethereal indie band. Their members all live in different continents, which would be a problem for many, yet they seem oddly harmonious offering a united world view. This group of gorgeous girls will have you aweinspired by their honey soaked pop.

The LA based rapper is steeped in the traditions of classic rap. To look at him, is to know where his name comes from, kid-ink is tattooed from head to toe. He has collaborated on both club bangers and fiery battle tracks. Sexual and stomping production, his flow on the beat is so natural, fast while totally in control – but put him against Pusha T and all of a sudden he’s fierce and channeling Kanye.

SAT 23 AUG

Yes, Hanson really are coming to NZ. As far as nostalgia trips go these guys reign supreme. But they’re not just living in the past, they are touring a new album Anthem. They’ve never been to New Zealand before and people really don’t know what to expect. Tongue in cheek blast-from-the-past nights are always a hell of a lot of fun anyway.

After the untimely death of Mi-Sex’s lead vocalist the band is back and will be channeling their abstract energies into some of New Zealand’s best venues.

Wagons will leave an indelible imprint in your brain, their charismatic front man Henry Wagons is all suave swagger, sporting facial hair like it never went (and never will go) out of fashion. Their latest album was co-produced by Mick Harvey from The Bad Seeds and their live shows have built them a seriously good reputation back in Australia. Described as the next generation of magic, this show has received startlingly positive reviews from even the most cynical critics. The show features seven masters of mental and optical illusion, that suck an entire audience into a collective state of confusion. The show is fast-paced and cool, each magician with his own unique skills. This show is genuinely impressive.

This acclaimed play is heading from New York to Wellington, fictitiously documenting the last days of Walt Disney, whose name has surpassed the man himself. The adrenaline charged odyssey looks at the audacious man whose dreams went on longer than the night. A man who tried to abolish reality.

Whether or not Tommy Wiseau is a mind-screwing genius or not is a matter up for debate, either intentionally awful (thus awesome) or just plain terrible (still kind of awesome), this film has brought cult cinema back to the forefront, with repeat viewers screaming out their favourite cringe-inducing lines. This film follows a meandering and absurd plot line that is hilarious while apparently trying to be deadly serious.

THE 90S

Few bands fit their surrounding’s better than Iceland’s Sigur Ros, they are so entrenched in the mystery of Iceland’s lonely Fjords that they have made up their own ancient language that borrows heavily from the unique language. Their concerts are truly otherworldly and something never to be missed. Watch as they perform at Germany’s Hurricane Festival.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL, 7.30PM

The 90s was one of those odd generations that is hard to define, all the generations that directly preceded it had a firm identity, for many the 90’s was a bit of a post-modern decade where slacker became the new buzz word. This documentary from National Geographic puts the decade in perspective placing it in a geographical and historical timeframe.

A question hangs in the air over what is more worrying, the world’s obsession with plastic surgery or the world’s obsession with shows dedicated to plastic surgery fails? Nevertheless, their will always be great satisfaction in watching the rich and famous show it all away, fighting age in vain until they look like a sesame street character. This show follows the ugly side of the pursuit of beauty, surely not for the squeamish.

SKY MOVIES EXTRA

GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

This is a film about dynasty and the ways in which our actions echo throughout generations. The film is split neatly in two, following two disparate story lines that are inextricably linked through blood and love. There are hints of Greek Tragedy about one of the coolest films of the decade. Ryan Gostling is unforgettably badass.

ELVIS: THAT’S THE WAY IT IS

FARGO – S1

TCM, 8.30PM

SOHO, FROM 1PM

Perhaps Elvis’ most fascinating period, or at least the one he is most caricatured as these days, The slightly flabby, sequined jumpsuit sporting Elvis with side burns slinking down his face and his eyes looking slightly bugged. This is The King, who was in a sense still in his prime but the rocky road of Las Vegas was clearly seeping into his soul.

Like a classic David Lynch flick, Fargo goes deep into the abyss of suburban America and uncovers its heart of darkness. The film portrays the local inhabitants of a Northern snowy town as many of them spiral out of control and characters slowly show their true dark sides. The show is great but gritty viewing which will please both fans of the Coen brothers’ classic film and newcomers. If you think you might have trouble stomaching the violence, the accents are oh so much worse.

Who would have thought this film would have made it to trilogy status. The gang is joined by all new familiar faces as well, including Mel Gibson, who plays an arms trader bent on ending the Expendables. Stallone must now hunt and kill this stone in his shoe. A notorious and game changing band in their day, they were all hair and latent sexuality. Heartthrobs, their lives were also fraught with drugs and many other of the pitfalls of fame. This dramatization of the band stars many well known actors from both Australia and New Zealand. Motown wasn’t the only thing blasting out of Detroit in the 60s, The African American Hackney brothers were into different things, beginning with the infectious ambition that the Beatles brought, they went on to form an early example of what would later be called Protopunk – which was big in Detroit (Iggy/ MC5). Oh, and their band was called Death.

THE PORTLAND PUBLIC HOUSE 463 NEW NORTH RD

EL SIZZLING CHORIZO

AUCKLAND

PONSONBY CENTRAL AUCKLAND

The buzz is so hot in Ponsonby Central at the moment that there is little chance of failure when selecting a place to eat among the eclectic selection. El Sizzling Chorizo gives you the real BBQ taste while at the same time making it an exciting dining experience. The menu is surprisingly cheap for the amount of sizzling meat you get dished up on your plate. For anyone that has sampled the delights of Argentina, they should know that no one does meat better than the Pumas. Celebrate the cult of enjoying conversation and a tasty red while tucking into meat grilled to perfection on slow-burning coals.

If you’re ever in need of a casual pint in comfy surroundings, The Portland Public House is becoming a gem of Kingsland, offering consistently quality music on most days of the week. Big names such as Sal Valentine and The Rocking Roller Coasters are making this hip pub their local performing spot. Don’t be put off by the beers served in jars – sometimes it just tastes better that way. The main area of the pub is set up like your grandma’s lounge and this gives it an intimate and cozy environment. Their jazz nights are wonderfully hazy under the low lamp light. The staff are laid back and always good for a bit of banter. A shining light in Kingsland’s bar scene.

SHOP5/574 COLOMBO ST

WELLINGTON

CHRISTCHURCH

A Michelin Star is no easy thing to get, believe me. Adam Newell has one however, and his restaurant Zibibbo is nestled into the historic Taranaki Street. Sample the Mediterraneanstyle cuisine which will make you believe in God again or lounge by the bar and nibble a pizza while enjoying a fine craft beer. The prices canyou-believe-it are not too shabby either.

Straying away from the high class Japanese joints, Samurai Bowl recognizes that Sashimi is a right that should be enjoyed by everyone! A casual dining experience at affordable prices, their famous Ramen noodles have people tasting true Japanese in a friendly environment. They’ve also got Sake and cold beer on tap.

The Gypsy Tea Room, tucked away in the quieter side of the bustling innerwestern suburb of Grey Lynn, offers a welcome break from the sometimes overwhelming nature of Ponsonby Road. Here you can share a candle lit drink with a close friend or potential new flame. The Gypsy Tea Room is an institution in the area. Cosy and unassuming, the place is perfect for sharing an uninterrupted conversation over a wine or well-made cocktail. The answer to your date location dilemma.

THE HOP GARDEN 13 PIRIE STREET WELLINGTON

The beauty of Wellington’s suburbs has meant it was always a shame that there weren’t more interesting establishments located outside of the city centre. Luckily, on the fringe of the city tucked into the slopes of Mount Victoria, is The Hop Garden. A great stomping ground for a microbrewery beer for all the connoisseurs out there, and the menu is also extensive with tapas whipped up by talented chefs.

HOW TO BE PARISIAN WHEREVER YOU ARE ANNE BEREST, AUDREY DIWAN, CAROLINE DE MAIGRET, SOPHIE MAS BOOK

Paris is a city which has inspired the romantic urges of more people than any other city on Earth. It possesses such magic that many people view it as the epicentre of culture and passion. This book looks at what it means to be truly from the city of love; how they dress, behave and socialise. It looks at their novel ideas on culture from the point of view of four female authors. All unmarried, they travel the bohemian heart of the iconic centre debunking myths and creating new legends. The city is full of traps for the glassy-eyed tourist so this book allows the reader an uncensored glimpse into the inner-workings of a city which is always different and yet always the same. Let this be your “go to” on all things sleek and Parisian.

Shihad RECENTLY, JON TOOGOOD experienced the harsh contrast between poverty and opulence when he encountered the queue for Auckland’s City Mission, which extended right around the corner. That was offset when he reached the next block with well-heeled businessmen parking their luxury motors for meetings at the big flashy high-rises downtown. It caused him to stop and think “What’s wrong with this picture?” Those scenes of inequality and social injustice went on to inform the music and lyrics of FVEY (pronounced Five Eyes), Shihad’s ninth album, and a return to the angry, heavy music of their debut Churn. The album also gave Shihad a reunion with the (now defunct) York Street studios and their former producer, Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke. “I wanted to talk about the widening gap between the rich and the poor, and the ugly conclusion of free market capitalism when it goes crazy without any constraints and how it’s a soulless, selfish, disgusting void. My intention for the record was to illuminate that for myself and just to say what was in my head rather than grumbling about it on Facebook.”

Toogood told me about FVEY back in March, when I interviewed him about his performance in the stage show Brel with Julia Deans, Jennifer Ward Leland and Tama Waipara. At that point he was all loved-up, having just returned from his wedding in Sudan. He was on the phone, backstage at a rehearsal with The Adults and the Auckland Philharmonic. But despite the distractions, Toogood was positive about the new Shihad project. He talked about patching up a 15-year rift between the band and Coleman, and of the producer’s relentless energy to create angsty, intense recording sessions. “The whole time was so focused. He was yelling “C’mon!” – driving us to be harder, play harder!” Given their place in the world, as 40-year-old men – married with children or settled in at least – I wanted to know why it was necessary to create the tension and force of their youth. Why return to Churn and Killjoy? “We wanted a brutal, honest, hard take on how the world is at the moment. This is a soundtrack for that, I suppose. I mean, this game’s been rigged. There’s choice, but there isn’t. National or Labour – same thing – will always

be looking after the guys that fund them the most. It’s bullshit. We were angry and wanted to channel that into something.” More recently I called up drummer Tom Larkin for his take on it all. He agreed. He raised points about the GCSB and the deterioration of privacy in this part of the world. He was particularly outraged about the way “the government just seems to do things, and they don’t consult. That they’re just being led by the nose by America, England or whoever.” The title of the new album is a direct reference to New Zealand’s connection to the Five Eyes spy network. The cover, a cyber-trooper helmet, is a deliberate connection too, to modern day e-spying. “The Five Eyes world powers were (established, originally,) to protect Eastern Bloc interests. At the time you could argue its imperative but now it’s been surrogated into a “cult” of spying…what are the overall interests of each Western power? What are the commercial interests and how can these run interference? Privacy and individuality are exploited and discounted at the touch of the next new

shiny i-toy!” Toogood’s always been keen to jump up on the amps and wig out but for Larkin, making FVEY wasn’t just a chance to return to his roots: it was a slap in the face. “When we were making this, we were recording one or two hours, then slacking off. We were content, middle-aged men just jamming and mucking about. We needed focus and drive. Our music, our career has done many things: the heavy records; the pop records; experimental stuff; Jon’s done the Adults thing, jazz and such. I produce and manage bands here in Melbourne (Cairo Knife Flight, Calling All Cars, Sinking Teeth). But we return to heavy because that’s where we began.” How they came back to Churn and its producer Jaz Coleman after an eternity apart is “not a big story” according to Larkin. “Basically, we were in the UK and got invited along to the Metal Hammer Awards and it just so happened that Killing Joke were all being inducted and there was an after party at a bar in London, so we went along and there was Jaz. We met up and it

was fantastic. Jon was skulking off to another part of the bar, and I said ‘Come here!’ And got him into the conversation, so that’s how that bridge was remade, once again – or at least being repaired in that first five-hour conversation!”

songs and when he heard something he’d stop us and we’d instantly go into developing that into what’s there on the album. So in the two weeks we were in York Street, we recorded 20, top to bottom: bothered with 18 but ended up with 11.”

Jaz is known as a talker, a man of many works. “He is but it’s great. He really gives a fuck. The first time we worked with him (for Churn) was a positive experience. It was after that when it really fell to shit. But this time he was great…a needed shot of energy…added the right kind of focus and push for us to make the kind of album we did.”

The return to York Street was fitting, given they were the first band to record there and the last ones out. They literally turned off the lights when it dismantled earlier in April.

Originally the band compiled 55 songs over a six-week-long stretch at a makeshift digi-studio in Melbourne. “We were not getting much out of long days, cos we were middle-aged and lazy. So we applied this strict two-hour work manifesto, to go hardout for a short time to lay down the bones of some material. We’d work really fast and just get ideas and record them, then send them off to vocal lyric land and if anything came out of them, they’d become a song. When Jaz came (to Melbourne) we played him all those

“I think that was a wonderful closing of the circle. I helped lift that Console (a 1974 classic EMI Neve) into that room.” Larkin reckons it’s way better than similar gear used at Sound City Studios, also famous for its Neve. “It felt good to have the same people in the room, 20 years apart, at the funeral.” FVEY will be released on a number of formats in August, including CD, 180g vinyl and various digital formats. Whether the latter has encrypted tracking code is unclear but given the nature of this material you never know. You have been warned. TIM GRUAR
