The LA-based rapper is steeped in the traditions of classic boom bap rap. To look at him, there’s no question where his name came from – Kid Ink is tattooed from head to toe. He has collaborated on both club bangers and fiery battle tracks. Sexual and stomping production, his flow on the beat is so natural, fast while totally in control – but put him against Pusha T and all of a sudden he’s fierce and channelling Kanye.

Wagons will leave an indelible imprint in your brain. Their charismatic front-man Henry Wagons is all suave swagger, sporting facial hair like it never went (and never will go) out of fashion. Their latest album was co-produced by Mick Harvey from The Bad Seeds and their live shows have built them a seriously good reputation back in Australia. Ragged drinking songs will abound, getting the Tuning Fork swinging.

Racing is an Auckland super-group of sorts, featuring key members of The Checks, Brain Slaves, Sherpa, and Space Creeps, some of the coolest bands to have ever breathed life into our music scene. Racing’s style leans towards the classic swagger of The Checks, with their singer summoning the energy of classic ‘70s artists and their funky rhythms are balanced with the raw dude-rock elements of shamanistic guitarist Elliot Serjeant. Well worth a watch, this is a band for the future.

Lucha Lounge has answered the desperate calls for a decent bar in Newmarket. The cosy establishment will be hosting god bows to math, who have been hard at work perfecting a follow-up to their debut album. Come to the show and help raise funds for their new album – they will be joined by Bloodbags and Stone the Crows who will all be bringing frantic energy to the tiny venue.

Wunderbar, Lyttleton’s hub of quirkiness, is putting on this extraordinary show. Joined by the dream-pop act French for Rabbits, the headliners will be in their full five-member glory. Fuyoko’s Fables are dark in tone and texture. All five members contribute vocals in the band, creating both a soft and hard, folky and heavy sound. The introspective music is pure harmonic beauty, whispering of worlds within worlds.

Broods have exploded onto the scene, this handsome band have been traveling the world promoting their indie-tronic sound that aims to dominate people’s headphones and pack dancefloors. Until now the band has focused on the international scene, but with their self-titled and wellmarketed debut album, tickets have been snapped up in seconds. Find a way to see them – if you can.

Eddie Rayne is the iconic keyboardist who created the “sound” of seminal Kiwi art band Split Endz. he has teamed up with the award winning new-wave act Mi-Sex, they’ll be playing a minitour around New Zealand promoting their new projects. After the untimely death of Mi-Sex’s lead vocalist the band is back and will be channelling their abstract energies into some of New Zealand’s best venues.

Eb & Sparrow, with their delicate mixture of folk and country wrapped in modern indie have made decent strides in the New Zealand country scene, having opened for some really big names. There is a fascinating sense of timelessness about their music – lost sounds in a modern landscape. The melodies are all heart and heartache and they have a new album waiting in the wings – this is a rare and important chance to see them in person.

Q THEATRE

New Zealand bass music pioneer The Nomad has been around for a fair amount of time, having successfully released seven albums. Moving with the times, the bass heavy icon has flowed with the times, staying relevant. From the dirty grime which gripped the UK to the Trap movement which fused hazey Southern hip hop with the bass rhythms of dub and its younger cousin dubstep. Beats, bleeps and echoes will resonate through the hall while live sax, strong visuals and a guest MC will make this a truly momentous occasion.

AUCKLAND 8PM, QTHEATRE.CO.NZ

It’s been seven years since the last time Kristin Hersh graced our shores for one of her famously emotional and intimate shows. Constantly a rule breaker since her rise to fame as a 14 year old art punk in the group Throwing Muses, she has spent the last 25 years firmly on the scene, hiding from (yet stealing) the spotlight. Her solo career has been mostly acoustic, channelling her new career as a successful author into strange literary songs.

The show is half mouth-watering cuisine and half relationship drama as people buckle under the pressure of the kitchen.

As far as awards shows go, the VMA is generally the most fun. This year the VMAs heads back to California after a quick trip to cool Brooklyn last year. The West is the best however, and this year the awards will take place in the renovated and historic venue The Forum in Inglewood, stronghold of West Coast hip hop. Expect to see Iggy Azalea and her infectious music videos on repeat.

THE LADY GARDEN UNDERSTUDY

Chamber Music takes its name from the fact it was composed for intimate private venues. The popularity of the music has grown over the hundred of years since its birth and now exists in large concert venues around the world. This August it will be played at Mojo Viaduct Harbour. Sit back and relax as the quirky and colourful sounds of bassoon, flute and clarinet float through the rooms bathing the audience in their warmth.

There is big debate about which Bond theme is the best. The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra have joined in on the arguments, celebrating the music of Britain’s most suave spy. This night looks at the integral role that the Bond scores played on the films as a whole, reflecting the essence of the films. This is a one-off concert, with a talented line-up of singers.

This play is a hilarious and touching examination on an incredibly serious matter in many people’s lives. A look at conception and one couple’s contemplating regarding whether or not to have a child and the tolls it takes on the parents’ lives and the world at large. Your house is on fire, what do save? My 1970s Ibanez 5-string banjo, my Gibson SG that I have had since I was 19 and my nine month old son. Not necessarily in that order. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Twin Peaks. Dream job as a kid? I wanted to be an archaeologist, but people told me that was unrealistic, so I decided to abandon my dreams and settle for a steady career in the music industry. First album? Solid Gold ’87 – I LOVED ‘Walk like an Egyptian’. Thanks Bangles. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? A psychologist. Ultimate festival line-up? Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, Talking Heads, Bill Frisell, Gillian Welch, Roscoe Holcomb, Sonny Rollins, Howlin’ Wolf, Charles Mingus, Bob Dylan. Might be a bit tricky, a few of them are dead… Who would play you in a film? Matthew McConaughey. I have just started watching True Detective. MAD MEX MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

MEOW

AUCKLAND/WELLINGTON

9 EDWARD ST

It seems you can’t move for Mexican these days in New Zealand. With Mexicali, Mexico and many others strutting their stuff with tangy salsas and juicy tacos, it is interesting to see Mad Mex step onto the scene as a new plucky upstart. They offer all the usuals, in the way of Burritos, Quesadillas, Tacos and Nachos, with a reasonable price and refreshing sauces. The masked man is a recurring theme around the restaurant and the owners describe themselves as “the masked ones” and follow a simple code that healthy food equals a healthy body. The food will leave you impressed and dying for a beer, which they also serve – eat here and you too can become loco.

WELLINGTON

Located down the funny little lane which is Edward Street, Meow is a great edition to the street and has benefited from the owner decking the place out with an extensive range of retro furniture and paintings. The café is full of relaxed charm which seamlessly switches to a vibrant bar buzz later on. The menus for both dinner and breakfast are substantial and full of the classic at reasonable prices. The place has pies on its mind, with a counter brimming with delicious looking baked goods. The ample options for vegans and vegetarians shows the place will have the animal lovers of Wellington purring.

An institution of Wellington, the syrupy sodas are making their way around the country, but the flagship store is still the place to visit either for its tasty sodas (with those funny paper straws), their quality coffee or their classic sliders if you’re feeling peckish. The headquarters is tucked away on an alleyway off Courtenay Place. A Wellington institution, don’t sleep on this place for a minute longer.

CHRISTCHURCH

Ponsonby’s night life was getting dangerously close to maximum capacity so it comes as a massive relief that this bar has come into existence. The mood varies massively depending on whether you’re there for a chilled after work drink or for the full on Friday night club experience which the place provides. The size of the line is a good indication that what they’re selling, people are buying. A welcome edition to the quiet middle part of Ponsonby road.

The cutest little waffle shop does seem perfectly fitted for the coolest little capital city. Located on Courtenay Place, waffles are a food for all occasions, whether the weather is crummy or gorgeous. The waffles are pure simplicity, and no matter how tumultuous the rest of your week has been, there is a nice reliability in knowing these waffles are always going to taste delicious.

20,000 Days On Earth IAIN FORSYTH AND JANE POLLARD

Many music documentaries splice together a history of live gigs and screaming fans, contrasted against a series of serious face-to-face interviews, and far too often it all feels formulaic. But filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s 20,000 Days on Earth well and truly smashes that mould; a portrait, a performance, a stunning feat of visual and aural elements intertwined. Of course a film about prescient rock poet Nick Cave was never going to be conventional, but what is unexpected is how the film leads us to examine what makes us who we are and why we do what we do. Not only this, but a true celebration of the transformative power of the creative spirit. The pair met while studying Fine Art at London’s Goldsmiths College in the ‘90s, and since then will only work together. As part of their collaborative process Forsyth and Pollard enjoy having a “sounding block”, another brain to work with, and having to justify and fight for ideas. “We’ve been working together a long time and you get a pretty good instinct for what’s worth fighting for and what you believe in,” Pollard explains. “We use post-it notes a lot, for ‘that’s a good idea’,

‘that’s not’. And a secret post-it ballot is always a good way to gauge a thing.” Freely admitting he was once a junkie, Nick Cave has morphed over the years to become a cultural icon; elegant and elusive with an air of the dark prince about him. With such a complex character at its centre, 20,000 Days on Earth was always destined to be unorthodox and avant garde. “Nick wouldn’t allow a normal, conventional film,” Pollard confirms. “People have approached him over the years and he’s just said straight away he’s not interested.” This led to the pair taking a sideways approach. “We were all coming at this with the heads of artists, knowing that we didn’t want to make a standard music documentary. Really it’s a bit of a cul de sac; there are some beautiful films but they’re largely built on sadness or struggle. We wanted to find a way to make a film that is creative and is engaging, but doesn’t have to be borne out of struggle.” Beginning with a rapid shuffle through images of Cave’s creative life – as a singer, musician and writer for more than 40 years – and counting down to his 20,000th day of existence, the

film then weaves drama and reality to portray a fictitious day-in-the-lifeof. Much more than merely sharing stories, the film delivers an intimate portrayal of Cave’s artistic process, as he revisits and reconsiders, talks and reminisces. With a double entendre of sorts, Cave’s creative process is echoed through Forsyth and Pollard’s in making the film, which adds to the film’s overall impact. “Right near the end of the film when Nick is walking towards the beach and talking about ideas and protecting them, well, that’s how this film started… as an idea. That idea, that intention, it was very difficult to explain to people we wanted to help us make it,” Pollard recalls. Forsyth and Pollard started filming during the songwriter’s sessions for Push the Sky Away, but very quickly it evolved into something much larger. “What we really wanted was to shoot something as a doco, about the real person, but approach it as a feature film with that heightened look you associate with the cinema.” After pausing momentarily Forsyth continues, “We wanted a hyper-real world in keeping with Nick.”

After developing a loose screenplay Forsyth and Pollard started shooting the first improvised scene, Cave’s visit to a therapist (Darien Leader, a friend of the filmmakers). “We started with the psychoanalyst interview; that was crucial. We shot it two to three months ahead of everything else and we used that to find the film, in a way… to find the themes,” Pollard reveals. And while Cave’s recollections of his father – who died in a car accident when he was 19 – make for a particularly poignant moment in the film, it’s all down to the edit “When we were shooting, Nick talked about his father for more than an hour. But it felt like the more present his father was, the less you understood the influence... so we took most of it away.” Forsyth and Pollard used a similar methodology when it came to Susie Bick, Cave’s wife since 1997. While Cave waxes lyrical about the first time he met Bick, throughout the film her face is obscured or her back is turned, just as the cover of Push the Sky Away shows her with hands covering her face. “It felt right to do that in the film, because she lives in the songs, and the presence she has, what she means to Nick, is magical. It’s bigger than life, it’s more imaginative,” Pollard enthuses while Forsyth continues: “The more present she was in the film, the less we really discovered about her.” Cave also spends some time chauffeuring old friends and collaborators around in his Jag; toughguy English actor Ray Winstone in the passenger seat, Australian singer Kylie Minogue in the backseat, and former bandmate Blixa Bargeld. The latter, with Bargeld, makes for a captivating scene as the two honestly and awkwardly talk about why Bargeld departed the band (after 20 years) with a two line email. Some glorious cinematic shots have come out of shooting in cars, but perhaps more importantly for Forsyth and Pollard, the car is so crucial in Cave’s second novel, The Death of Bunny Munro. “The car becomes a kind of metaphor for the inside of your head, for your thought process, and we extended on that. For us, these people are like ghosts, they are like conversations he is having in his head and they all represent concerns or areas where we wanted to get a different tone of voice, a different way of speaking from Nick.”

20,000 Days on Earth cleverly balances visual and aural elements, a great example the stunning montage of archival performance footage from Cave’s career into a more current Sydney Opera House show. Not only does it serve as a vehicle to show how far he’s come – just a kid growing up in rural Victoria – it also illustrates the enigmatic performer at his charismatic best: “We’re really proud of that scene,” Pollard admits. “We had no idea if it would work. Nick is a person and he goes out on stage and delivers an authentic experience every time. But that authenticity is from doing it again and again, the act of constantly working it.” The filmmakers were also careful not to overload the film with music, “because you can buy his albums, he’s still alive and you can see him perform,” Forsyth explains. “The film needed to do something more and show something different.” Ultimately they wanted to portray the way Nick feels and illustrate how hard he works: “He really puts the hours in, which inspired us to try harder and do more.” And work hard they did, spending nearly two years on the project from start to finish. While a lot of the challenges were around logistics, Forsyth and Pollard worked closely

with Jon Amos and managed to finish just in time for the Sundance Film Festival. “We finished pretty close to the Sundance premiere, I think about ten days in between.” Pollard laughs as she recalls the strangeness of adjusting to the festival (and winning both the Directing and Editing Awards) so soon after being confined to a darkened room with only three of four people. Some might argue that 20,000 Days on Earth magnifies Cave’s mythology rather than dispelling it. But certainly the film provides context, and in amongst the dark there are those dazzling sparks of humour, of hope, of deep and enduring love. “Being on stage meant I got to be that person I always wanted to be,” he says at one point in the film. “Then, you look down into the front row and someone yawns.” Also, the film was never meant to exist just to share some of Cave’s stories, with wider themes of memory, inspiration, artistic integrity, creative process. “We hope the film helps inspire anyone with a creative urge… they should just do it!” Pollard hastens to add, “Creativity isn’t a magical gift that only some people have, you don’t have to be a genius. But you do have to look after it, nurture it and see it through.” REN KIRK

of in a spot, we were a little bit irritated and pissed off with a few situations, so it’s what came out from us being in that space... it’s a punch-in-the-face kinda song.

BROODS WHEN THEY RELEASED their first single ‘Bridges’ late last year, brother and sister duo Caleb and Georgia Nott quickly became a talking point; would Broods be the next NZ music success story? It looks highly likely, with the pair now signed to Capitol Records in the US and Polydor in the UK. They’ve already toured the globe, playing support and their own headlining gigs, and are set to drop their eagerly anticipated debut LP. While their self-titled EP included six sweet indiepop songs, Evergreen features more expansive electro-pop arrangements (with talented producer Joel Little at the helm), lush layers and an emotive insight that seems beyond their years.

& Vines – but we got to play three. The last one (Splendour in the Grass) was nuts! Thought it was going to be some tiny little stage but we rocked up and was it 10,000 people sorta styles. It was pretty overwhelming, but the crowd was awesome!

Ren Kirk: So you guys have come a long way in a short time, does it feel a bit surreal? Caleb Nott: Oh for sure! Every day something new is happening and each week there’s something big... it’s hard to keep up.

RK: It’s more than alright: the tracks are emotive and thought-provoking, and overall it’s coloured with a beautifully brooding (yip, I said it) melancholy. Where do all these deep emotions come from? CN: I guess Georgia is really literal and quite emotional in her lyric writing. I’m quite abstract and we put them together. We’ll be writing together and Georgia will say, “You can’t have that abstract chorus, it doesn’t work.” And then sometimes I’ll say, “Georgia, that’s a bit cheesy.” But we really want to produce music that makes people feel and think.

RK: Who does what? What’s the creative process like for the two of you? CN: We started off with strict duties but now it’s very collaborative. It’s like whoever’s got the mojo at the time, and then just sorta back them up and encourage them. RK: You guys have just returned from another overseas tour, what were the highlights? CN: We hadn’t really played festivals – except our first ever gig at Rhythm

30

|

GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

RK: So, you’re back in time for some local gigs to support your debut album release Evergreen. I’ve had a couple of listens and wow. I’m really impressed. CN: Thank you. RK: No really, it’s quite beautiful. CN: Haha, cool. It’s a difficult thing to figure out, doing an album, but hopefully it’s alright.

RK: What about the track three, ‘Killing You’. There’s some nice soundscapey layers in and it made me think of The xx. CN: It’s definitely the rawest track on the whole album. There’s a lot of the background noises from the demo Georgia originally recorded in her room; cicadas, her phone going off. It was a bit shiity, which kinda worked in the mix of old and new production. RK: Track seven, ‘Sober’, has a neat, bouncy beat structure and a different musicality. How did that track come to life? CN: I wrote that when I was in the makeup trailer for our ‘Bridges’ video in LA. I was like, “Oh man, gotta finish this album,” and sitting in this trailer on a beautiful day, with a lot of beautiful half-naked women running round. And that’s what came out, it was a progression of eight bars. I showed it to Joel (Little) when we got back and we worked from there. It’s one of my favourites on the album. RK: What’s the best thing about in putting this album together? CN: Creating a whole body of work. Actually writing an album, it’s something weve always dreamed of. It’s amazing that people want you to write... that they want to listen to it. It’s an incredible feeling – who gets to do that? No one does! RK: What do you miss most about NZ while you’re away? CN: The air. No, I take that back, the coffee! I miss good coffee. No one does coffee like NZ. No one does flat whites apart from Australia. But I know I have to order double shot lattes with half the amount of milk. It’s the closest I’ve got to a flat white, but it still needs some fine tuning. REN KIRK
