To say that there is a key component missing here would be a major understatement. However, Queen have ambitiously replaced the irreplaceable, joining forces with Adam Lambert to tour the arenas of the world. This show will capture the operatic spectacle of Queen, pure glamour and bravado. This is the event that Queen fans have been waiting decades for, so get in quick. The spirit of Freddie lingers on in Lambert.

Galatos, the mysterious bar tucked into the seedy side streets of K’ Rd, is providing an edgy night of entertainment. The bands performing are genuinely some of the best in Auckland from a wide variety of influences. Race Banyon brings bedroom bangers, Sal Valentine brings old-time big band energy, and Arthur Ahbez brings folk dripping with psychedelic charisma. This festival is a beacon of contemporary live music.

POP WILL EAT ITSELF THE KINGS ARMS AUCKLAND 8PM, $59, NZTIX.CO.NZ

Storming onto the UK scene in the late ‘80s, this band is high energy, industrial-tinged dance music. They set themselves apart from the rest with their socially conscious satirical edge and sample-driven anthems. This show promises to be relentless and will break new ground.

This guitar legend will be performing for the first time in moody Aotearoa. There will be two different band line-ups with the artist himself effectively opening for himself. He will be showing off his ability to play vintage, organic instruments. Marvel in the sheer diversity in his ability to play as a full band and as an acoustic artist. Bonamassa is viewed by many as one of the greatest living guitarists and the veritable New King of Blues.

Having risen astronomically fast in the Australian blues scene, Kirk is bringing his raw high energy blend of soul and blues to New Zealand sharing his new album Steer the Wheel. An absolute Aussie darling, the new album brings in the biggest names from his native music industry, creating smooth and cool soul-drenched music. He’s only been around for a while but his career is sure to keep on this upward trajectory, seem him at this intimate venue.

Bob Dylan, the apparition with a million different personas, has in recent years become a nomadic performer, cruising the arenas of the world to adoring Dylan fans. Dylan is always relevant and there are sure to be as many young fans as old. The curly haired Tambourine man has worn his voice to a smoky whisper but certainly still packs a punch. Always different, always the same.

TUNING FORK

This is a fiery one-two combo not to be sneered at. Nobunny is an artist with a sound to match his gimmick. Fitted out all in leather jackets and rabbit masks, he plays classic fuzzed-out trash-punk with such reckless abandon that you wonder why more bands don’t play without pants. He’s bringing along his homies The Hussy, a psychedelic punk duo who have been on a hellish five year tour with some of the biggest names in garage rock. This will be a truly unmissable show – I just wish there was a way I could highlight that further.

AUCKLAND 7.30PM, $39, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Vector Arena’s baby venue has done it again, this time bringing bohemian rock ‘n’ roll outfit Howling Bells to NZ. It’s been a wee while since we last saw them, so this is a good chance to see an Aussie band playing rough rock straight from the dirty plains and lonely bones churchyards they inhabit. Their music has been described as a woozy tapestry of sex and death, with an exquisite voice hauntingly accompanying the guitar.

Auckland’s favourite home of independent theatre, The Basement is flexing its muscles again with this chaotic ensemble. It looks at Auckland, the super city of New Zealand, a packed crowd of strangers each with a story to tell. This is a celebration of a city finally finding its voice through the crazed people that call it home. An all-female cast swarms with tangled conversations of experience and awkwardness. Too relevant to ignore.

This claustrophobic thriller grabs you by the scruff of the neck and drags you through its exhilarating genre-bending plot. A hipster couple living the expat life in idyllic surroundings, young and in love in a world that seems truly perfect. Awkward events dot the plot, online porn is the catalyst to start of the adventure throwing them into the dark abyss. Full of nerve wrecking suspense, the play promises big things for the playwright Amy Herzog.

7.30PM, $28-35, QTHEATRE.CO.NZ

Q Theatre has quickly become Auckland’s hot new theatre, and this is a stellar example of the quality that is being shown at the venue. Wheel of Experience is a unique blend of music and theatre, a historic account of New Zealand settlers through epic original songs. Eight stories will be painted, weaving tales of struggle and triumph from a time that has been forgotten.

MICHAEL PALIN’S BRAZIL

As everyone, I hope, is voting this coming election, now comes the time to sit down and take stock on which party represents the values you hold. This debate represents the big face-off between corporate kingpin John Key and the relatively unknown David Cunliffe. John Campbell represents the perfect moderator, smart enough to demand answers to the questions and with enough experience to put his ego to one side and let the politicians take centre stage. This could be the moment for Cunliffe to show the country he has the personality and charisma needed to be a serious contender for the hot seat.

Reviews have been mixed for this British black comedy mainly due to its casual take the touchy issue of depression. A group of strangers find themselves on a roof during New Year’s Eve in London, each with plans to jump off. They form a bond by each one crashing the other’s mournful moment. An adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel for fans of the popular novelist’s works.

Michael Palin, member of Monty Python, is a British treasure not just for his comedy but more so in recent years for his remarkable travelogues, venturing across the globe letting the world see through his unique worldview the ways in which different people live their lives.

BILLY CONNOLLY’S BIG SEND OFF

TRACEY MORGAN: BONA FIDE

9.35PM, TV ONE

While Tracey Morgan is known mainly from his zany character in the hit show 30 Rock, his stand-up comedy paints a different picture of the comic. His wackiness is toned down and instead he acts more like a classic comedian. Here, he plays to a packed audience in his hometown of Brooklyn, where he discusses his life with funny anecdotes documenting how he went from young hood to Hollywood star.

Billy Connolly has always been a comedian that has taken an unusual and controversial stance on humour. This two-part series explores the many ways of dealing with the most taboo subject of death. This is an incredibly personal and enlightening journey that we are brought on in the classic way that Connolly often weaves the serious with the absurd. He travels the USA, from a funeral convention to a Voodoo ceremony in New Orleans.

LATE NIGHT DINER 152B PONSONBY RD

CGR MERCHANTS

AUCKLAND

For too long now, Auckland has been in desperate need for some decent joints where hungry city-dwellers can come in the wee small hours to indulge in cheap bites. A coffee after 4pm is surprisingly hard to come by, and while Late Night Diner provides more for those looking for the full dining experience, it is a fantastic place to snuggle up with someone in the late evening with a bottomless cup of coffee and a few snacks. The staff here are ridiculously friendly, but in a way that doesn’t come across as overbearing and makes you happy to fork out a little extra for a tip. Come here on a quiet evening and people watch Ponsonby Road with an alcoholic beverage and a great array of classic American diner food.

46 COURTENAY PL WELLINGTON

“CGR” stands for Coffee, Gin and Rum. A triple treat which makes this new bar on Courtenay Place seem darn irresistible. Serious thought has gone into the creation of this bar. This place is a shelter from the storm, an escape from the bustle of the city. Mellowness reigns supreme with a mood-setting interior and a Caribbean flavour which Wellington seems to do so well. Immediately one gets the feeling that this is the kind of place where a simple beer won’t suffice – this is a cocktail bar where you go to enjoy something classy.

MIDNIGHT ESPRESSO 178 CUBA ST

DIDA’S WINE BAR

WELLINGTON

Whilst Auckland may be struggling for late night watering holes where night owls can re-caffeinate, Wellington certainly isn’t. Midnight Espresso delivers exactly what the name suggests – great coffee late into the night. The place is vegan and vegetarianfriendly with an emphasis on Afro-American soul food. Two very hot and happening eating concepts meet in the middle at one of Cuba Street’s best establishments.

The self-proclaimed “best pizza in Dunedin”, Mamma Mia Pizza prides itself on authentic woodfired pizzas fresh from the oven. Their pizzas look like they would hold their own in the heart of old Napoli. The place does a delectable-looking tiramisu and they have the classic checkered table cloth that you’ll want to tuck into your shirt so not a drop of their tomato sauce is wasted.

THE ASTRO LOUNGE 23 WORCESTER BLVD CHRISTCHURCH

This chilled out bar is the wind down zone that accompanies the Cook ’n’ with Gas restaurant. Come here to relax in a casual atmosphere and nibble on some of the great local produce on offer. WALLPAPER* CITY GUIDE SERIES PHAIDON

Wallpaper magazine is a cutting-edge glimpse into the world of the modern Renaissance man. An insight into fashion, design and architecture, the publication takes a decidedly European look on the suave creatives that exist among us. Wallpaper has also branched out into city guides, giving travellers an opportunity to skip the social ladder and head straight for a certain city’s hippest spots. These are places that Lonely Planet wouldn’t dream of recommending. However, these guides are certainly not for the traveller on a budget but instead shows the way that you can travel in style like a sophisticated local, recommending the best walks a city has to offer, boutique hotels and dimly-lit wine bars. Their popularity is apparent by the sheer number of guidebooks now in existence, one for nearly every city imaginable. Go on – you know you want to travel in style.

Angus & Julia Stone AUSTRALIAN INDIE FOLK-ROCK duo Angus and Julia Stone first made a name for themselves with sophomore album Down the Way in 2010, which went on to win five ARIA music awards. On the back of that success, the famously shy duo began work on a follow-up, but eventually shelved the

idea in favor of taking some time off to pursue solo careers. However, coaxed back into the studio by super-producer Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Beastie Boys, Jazy-Z, to name a few), the pair spent time writing and recording at Rubin’s Shangri La Studios in Malibu, resulting in their third LP (self-titled). Delivering

another batch of beautifully ruminative, melodic, and often melancholy collaborations, Rubin’s touch isn’t overtly noticeable. But there’s an extra layer that was previously missing, with subtle Neil Young and Joanna Newsom-esque touches, and an album that’s undoubtedly their best yet.

Growing up on the northern beaches of Sydney, the Stone siblings were exposed to music at an early age thanks to their parents. After finishing school they went overseas, spending some time together in South America. Their time together, and singing songs in a jungle in Bolivia, turned out to be a defining moment for Julia: “Sometimes it’s not till you look back at a memory that you see it was important and other times you know when it’s happening. I felt like that when I was listening to Angus sing, I was truly amazed by him. I wanted to learn to do what he was doing… it was definitely what inspired me to start writing.” The point of difference on this latest

album is all about the songwriting; notably the Stones writing together for the first time and losing the slightly two-sided feel of earlier albums. “We went into a rehearsal space with some friends and we started making up songs,” Julia explains. After pausing momentarily she adds, “I guess in the past it hadn’t occurred to us – we enjoyed writing the songs on our own that we didn’t even entertain the idea. But this time round it felt like a natural place to go.” With a penchant for acoustic introspection, the intimate folk songs the siblings crafted together for Angus & Julia Stone are full of poignant lyrics that evoke a bittersweet, poetic juxtapositions. And humbly deigning to describe her own songwriting style/ contribution, Julia’s quick to expound on her brother’s: “Angus has an amazing ability to get across a feeling with melody and words. He can convey so much emotion and mood in the most beautiful and effortless ways. I have always been impressed by his poetry… it amazed me how he could do that from such a young age. He is a man of few words. But the words he chooses are the right ones.” While Julia says for her the highlight of the album was undoubtedly spending time with Angus – “The drives along the Pacific Coast Highway. Late night card games” – fans will find more with each listen. The first highlight is album opener, ‘A Heartbreak’, immediately demanding attention with its menacing beat and choppy, swampy guitars. Full of sultry swagger, Julia also describes the track as a perfect example of how Angus’s writing compliments her own. “The first lyric in the song came from an old song I’d written. The original words were much more of a story, and they worked with the feel of the guitar part, but as the music changed those lyrics didn’t sit right. He simplified them and found a way to make it work with the new sounds.” Track two is another stunner, eerie and effect-laden. “I really love singing this song,” Julia enthuses. “It’s a true love song to me, in the sense that we are always trying to find out with words if the other person loves us – as is so often the case in love – when all we have to do is trust the situation.” With a true ghost-stories-by-the-fire feel her

voice is at its sweet and languorous best, backed by Angus’s guitar part and a pedal: “It’s called the holy grail and has a wonderful effect called the “flerb”. It’s a great sound. “ ‘Grizzly Bear’ is the third track, a toetapping sort-of love song, idyllic and the complete antithesis of anything Grizzly Bear. Julia laughs as she explains the title. “Angus would visit his next door neighbor and they would sing songs and drink tea. One time they were singing lyrics and one of the lyrics he sung was something like, “Grizzly bears don’t like dogs ‘cause they bark.” He’d read it on an in-flight magazine somewhere. The song changed and turned into something else over time and even though the lyric didn’t remain he kept calling the song ‘Grizzly Bear’.” The musicality of ‘Little Whiskey’, with its driving drum beat is another delight, which morphed as the duo worked on it in Shangri La with Rubin. “It started out as a really melancholic and beautiful finger-picking song, but Rick said, “I think we should try something totally different for this song.” Then there’s ‘Main Street’, full of beautifully layered instrumentals evoking utter desolation: “Main Street is a place where I was shown a great kindness by a past love. I remember the day and the moment.” In stark contrast, ‘All This Love’ is handclappingly upbeat, showcasing the duo’s vocals in a refreshing new light. And nearing seven stormy minutes, the album-closing ‘Crash and Burn’ is a sumptuous groove that sums up the album; saturnine solos and aching vocals, gentle finger-picking and waves of shimmering guitars, as well as the intermittent howl of a Hammond organ. Following on from this successful release Angus and Julia Stone are set to play New Zealand for the first time, something Julia is looking forward to: “It’s strange that we haven’t played in New Zealand before. New Zealand is so close to Australia and we have toured there a lot. So hopefully now we will spend more time visiting and playing music with you guys.” Let’s hope so. REN KIRK
