MINUIT It’s been 11 years since the release of Minuit’s debut album, The 88. To celebrate and say “cheers,” Minuit are doing a handful of shows - then they’re out. Yes, the kiwi band, are calling last drinks. Leaving a legacy of macabre media photos, eery music videos, the smouldering groove of Aotearoa, lyrics mixing sinister with salvation and memorably rib-rattling live shows, the band are surprised they made it this far. An accolade to cherish for Melbournebased singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett is when Rolling Stone magazine compares you to “early Bob Dylan”. Her double EP A Sea Of Split Peas has found favour due to the wordsmiths knack for turning the pedestrian into perfect prose. “My throat feels like a funnel. Filled with Weet-Bix and kerosene.”
Fresh from a worldwide reunion tour as founding member of Jurassic 5, kickstarting his visual art project Against The Current and a cameo in Epic Rap Battles Of History the “verbal Herman Munster”, Chali 2NA returns, bringing a barrage of baritone alongside his live band the House Of Vibe All Stars.

WELLINGTON
WELLINGTON
Since opening late August, Moon 1 has fast become a community hub within Newtown, giving people the opportunity to enjoy live music, great food and refreshing beverages without going into the city. Its aim is to provide a non-agespecific space where all people feel comfortable. Think “Lo-Fi Hi-Brow”. Formerly Bar Edward, the sports bar is gone, replaced with classic Pinball and arcade machines. Their specialties are pizza, craft beers and a selection of fine whiskies. Owner Benjamin James’s previous endeavours include co-owning specialist record store Deathray, so you know culture and character is being injected into our capital.
Meat, meat and more meat. If you like meat, GMB is for you. Pulled pork, steaks, bacon, ribs, sausages, burgers and briskets. If you don’t like meat or want something a little less heavy, that’s okay too. There’s fennel, apple, kumara, roasted capsicum and more. Brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert is equally as special as the drinks menu that extends further than your usual tipples. Cider, wines, craft beer, cocktails and homemade lemonade. Owned by the team behind Logan Brown Restaurant, GMB is all about sweet and spicy grilled satisfaction in one of Wellington’s tastiest streets.
FOOD DEPARTMENT 45 WAINUI RD RAGLAN
Celebrating one year in business this month is one of Raglan’s favourite local eateries. The Europeaninspired pizza, bread and coffee restaurant has a delectable range of items on offer. big-time. He reminds me of their part in Dizzee Rascal’s ascent. “You wouldn’t want to hear that we’re jammin’ with the famous. We like to discover people, work with them as talent, not celebrities.” Incidentally, the cover of Junto has a logo based on “clouds and nature and sacred geometry”, created by the winner of a design competition run by Basement Jaxx a couple of years ago.
Basement Jaxx BASEMENT JAXX ARE on top of the world. It’s a view these inveterate musical explorers have long embraced, ever since minting the currently voguish, airwave-dominating pop-house sound at the turn of the millennium. But as they prepare to release their earthmoving, hip-shaking new album that view is taking on added meaning. Apparently it’s a balmy 38 degrees in Malta, if Simon Ratcliffe, founding member and one half of the DJ duo Basement Jaxx, is to be believed. He’s taking a short break away from the UK and hanging at his dad’s for a week before heading off on tour with music partner Felix Buxton. “It’s great here, but I have to move to another room – the ocean is too noisy!” Oh, stop. It’s three degrees here in Wellington, damn it! “Felix’s back in our new studio, where he’s still seeing random UFO appearances. Yeah – had us going there...” No more explanation is entered into. However, he does tell me about the new studio, situated in London’s largest music hub. “We were over our old space (in Brixton) – it was a short bike ride but completely windowless. I think the move to Kings Cross has been healthy. The area used to be run-down but it’s now up-and-coming. Even the centre where we are is a new building. We’ve got the top floor. The landlords would show potential tenants

through, to give them the idea. We’ve got Prodigy down the hall, and (others) setting up soon.” With the suburb’s transformation, the area has become a new travel hub. “The Eurostar now rolls in. It’s kind of a travel and world metaphor I guess.” In reality, these guys have always had something of a global theme to their work so it’s no surprise that their new album is something of a musical travelogue, whilst at the same time revisiting some of the hard floor beats that made their first jump-around likes of ‘Where’s Your Head At’, ‘Red Alert’ and ‘Romeo’. Junto is the Jaxx’s seventh studio album and the first on the new label [PIAS] Australia (via their own longrunning imprint Atlantic Jaxx). It’s Spanish for “together” (not the despotic Latin American regime), appropriate given the long list of collaborators, with walk-on vocalists who were “auditioners, stalkers and singers we’d met in the car park.” He’s referring to Niara, the power-lunged singer on the world music feel-good anthem ‘Power To The People’. Scottish rapper Patricia Panther was also picked up on the street at the Edinburgh Festival, and does the sexually gobby ‘Summer Dem’. Slapbang in the middle of their carny-style touring party is Shakka who slams out samba-style ‘Rock This Road’. “Ratcliffe is rather proud of the way the band finds these waifs and strays before they hit the
This album is all about bringing in the world, in all its colours. And that includes transgender rapper Mykki Blanco, who appears on “Harlem Shake’. Well, some of her vocals are. Blanco disappeared before the mix was done – “I guess she’s really out there – somewhere!” Opening the album, after an initial intro is ‘Power To The People’, an anthem of global togetherness – a peaceful call to arms with Niara’s clarion vocal, backed by a kids’ chorus and an additional 5000 fans recorded on the duo’s last tour. Plus The Recycled Orchestra of Catuera in Paraguay. “Felix went there after our American tour last year, I think. I had to get back for family. He’s a free spirit. He wanted to explore and help out. He recorded them as a sort of collaboration and to draw attention. It’s part of an “internet machine”, powertothepeople.fm. People can go there and do different versions of a track. It’s a universal song, about how we’re all connected, chaos theory, trickle down theory and the like.” Going global is not a first for Basement Jaxx and the theme was all over Junto from the start. ‘Mermaid of Salinas’ was one of the first tracks made when flamenco guitarist Andrea Terrano dropped a new track onto the duo’s desk at their old studio back in 2012. “It was Latin café music – until we got at it. And it was a catalyst for new ideas.” But perhaps no idea will be as entertaining as TW3RKBOT 1.0 which is featured in their new video for ‘Never Say Never’ – a video by the groundbreaking video director Salman Kesh. “We saw his stuff,” noted Ratciffe “and invited him on board, no idea that he’d come up with a Japanese science lab re-inventing twerking for the people.” Miley – eat yer heart out? “Ah, yeah.” TIM GRUAR

Villainy THE FIRST TIME I saw Aucklandbased nu-rockers Villainy was during the opening gigs at this year’s Big Day Out. They put on an impressive display, dominating one of the major stages, instantly drawing the incoming crowd and exiting those still waiting at the gates to get in. However, as lead singer and guitarist Neil Fraser reminds me, we’d met before, about six years ago at the Xmas party of a major corporate where we once both worked. His band, In Reverse Order, opened the party with some stonking emo-rock that made My Chemical Romance look like a bunch of amateurs. I was so impressed I snuck backstage to meet them. Their EP enjoyed some limited underground success. However, Fraser reinvented, along with recruits James Dylan (Bass), Dave Johnston (drums) and Thomas Watts (lead guitar) under the new moniker Villainy. Over the phone, where he’s cruising through the Auckland rush hour traffic, he tells me that the band’s title is a nod to comic book bad guys (think Batman graphic novels, not Archie Andrews). “I think they are sort of cool, they’re a little understated, need some respect. These arch-villains were often intellectuals but misunderstood.” By the way, don’t believe Google – this is not a band named after a village in Baranya, Hungary, famous for its wine. No, Fraser claims, it’s a great pseudonym for his real life. By day he works for a major software company, at night he’s belting out hard rock with a vengeance. Of course, he’d love to be rocking full-
time. Alas for many Kiwi musicians, it’s the reality to have to hold down a fulltime job as well. Speaking of software, there’s a slight reference in the band’s debut Mode. Set. Clear. which was released last year and scooped a Vodafone NZ Music Award for Rock Album of the Year. “The title is like that reset idea, trying to find a new mode, looking for a new direction. These songs have been road-tested for a while and have been developing well.” The album enjoyed number one on the local charts and a bunch of high ranking singles including ‘Alligator Skin’, ‘Gather Yourselves’, ‘Another Time’, and ‘Ammunition’. The last became the title of their upcoming national tour – a chance to play loud and hard, the way the songs are intended. With producer Tom Larkin at the helm, fast and furious was the order of the day. “We went over to Tom’s place in Brunswick (Melbourne). He was fresh from making the new Shihad album so he was channelling that anger and energy and we loved it. We’re well-behaved at work but angry and aggressive on stage – musically.” It turns out that the more I talk to Fraser, the more pennies drop. Villainy also opened for Blacklistt, Incubus and The Offspring last year. So, if the name is vaguely familiar, then it’s well-earned. Their intense, dense but melodic rock speaks for many emotions but at the heart is the need to release. “Just get on the floor and let yourself go!”
If you do get a chance to catch these guys, and you should, then stop by the merch stand to admire the new vinyl release of Mode. Set. Clear. which features the redone art of famous album artist Storm Thorgenson. “He was the guy behind Led Zep, Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Genesis and Pink Floyd’s incredible covers. We contacted him through the label and some contacts. His art for our album was probably his last, or close to it (as Thorgenson passed away in April last year). I sometimes wonder if some of his ideas were components of other album designs, not rejects but maybe ideas not used and resurrected later. I like that. It has this tradition and legacy that we can be part of.” Speaking of tradition, shouldn’t there be rock radio playing on the car stereo, even while you’re bumper-to-bumper in Auckland’s crazy 5pm traffic? “Nah, mate,” says Fraser. “Auckland traffic is a myth. I was home ten minutes ago.” So no road rage there then. Darn, I myself still have to endure Wellington’s public transport on a Friday arvo. Good thing I can relax to a bit of noisyland from Villainy in the carriage. I do pity my fellow passengers! TIM GRUAR

The Maze Runner DYLAN O’BRIEN
NEW YORK CITY-born actor Dylan O’Brien will be familiar to anyone who’s seen MTV’s Teen Wolf. The 23-yearold developed an enormous fan base playing Stiles in the hit show, loosely based on the 1985 comedy film of the same name starring Michael J. Fox. One of the first bona fide stars of the YouTube generation, O’Brien started uploading videos to the site at just 14, and picked up a manager after appearing in a web series. On film he’s best known for the 2013 comedy The Internship and as the lead in 2012’s The First Time. He is now starring in Wes Ball’s The Maze Runner playing Thomas, who we follow into the mysterious Glade, where he finds a community of boys struggling to survive and escape the enormous and terrifying maze that surrounds them. On brief stopover in London, O’Brien explains the attraction of the role and talks about shooting in Louisiana. Your character is a blank slate to begin with – is it enjoyable to be able to craft him from the ground up? It is – these characters come into the world like someone has hit their reset button. I always think what would that be like, to have happen? You can form a completely different personality. You can be whoever you want, and you can discover things about yourself that maybe nothing ever allowed you to discover before. For my character, it’s really just his innate leadership ability. He’s a born leader, he’s courageous and he’s a fighter. These are things that he’s never even known about himself. My character is the one you’re thrown

in with and you see through his eyes for a second. It’s very well-established, this community they’ve developed together. You see who’s who, and everyone is so strong. From the get-go you understand everyone’s role in that place and you sort of understand what Thomas’s is going to be too. That first scene with him is very intense – we know as little as Thomas. How was that to play? It’s simple in that there’s nothing you can really go off of. You’re freaking out, but all you have to turn to is the exact moment. It’s a colourful scene too, in that I’m just reacting to all these boys around me, kicking me and having fun with it. It’s their monthly thing. You’re in this entirely new world, so there’s really only one way to play it. You just go with that. A scene like that, too, is easier to play in a way because you have so much to go off of in the moment. Acting out the scene with all those guys around you, you’re surrounded by all your cast-mates and a bunch of extras and it’s sort of intimidating. That gives you a lot that you would need anyway. Everything about it felt real. What did you like about the script? The story and the characters. I genuinely thought the story was really cool. Lord Of The Flies was one of my favourite books as a kid, and it very much reminded me of that. Lord Of The Flies and Lost, and I loved Lost too. But there was so much originality to it still. Even though you could make those comparisons – and they do pop out at you – it’s its own thing, and so its own world.
so hardworking. From the first meeting I had with him we spent two hours talking about my character and the story. He was very particular about the casting. On paper, once you see “visual effects director”, you assume perhaps he won’t be sensitive to performance, but as soon as I met him you knew he was and we spent so much time on performance in the movie. We did a lot of rehearsals beforehand. We really did need that strong ensemble presence in all those performances. How much is real and how much isn’t? Well, for the Grievers, it was literally like Wes shouting, “It’s behind you!” Or, when we were jabbing them, they were guys in blue suits waving their arms around. Wes is a genius and it depends where you’re at, but there are certain shots in that movie where it’s all him and certain things where it’s very much real and you have a lot to go off. It’s a great combination of having great production design to live in as an actor and also going in front of the blue-screen sometimes. Wes was very specific about what was going on. He has it all pre-visualised out. From the first meeting I had with him he was showing me his pre-vis. He drew a maze and had an aerial sketch of it. He already had how he wanted to cut around the sequence at the beginning with me in the elevator. There are sequences where we’re in a deserted parking lot next to a highway with a bit of blue-screen behind us and there’s a huge crazy crane shot up with us running, and it’s all a parking lot. They draw in the rest, and it’s awesome. You shot on location. Did that help with bonding you as a cast? It was so great, and it really helped to be on location. If we’d shot the movie in LA I think we’d all have gotten along, but it wouldn’t have had the same spirit. There’s something you get from being with each other, isolated in this crazy experience. You’re only there for what you’re doing, and so it’s all about that, and us guys hanging out. There wasn’t a single night we weren’t hanging out. I thought it was so cool. Every one of those guys and Kaya is just so cool – there’s not a bad word I can say about any of them. JOE UTICHI
