Acclaimed Kiwi heavy-metallers Beastwars are on the road this October with psychedelic stoner doom-metal cohorts Windhand. The shows have been added to the band’s Australian dates where they’re co-headlining the annual Doomsday Festival. Both bands have been busy touring and in the studio and this night promises to be the ultimate showcase of world class doom. Expect carnage.
Everyone’s favourite wrecking-balllicking, controversy-courting pop songstress brings her charmingly titled Bangerz tour to New Zealand this October. Her Vector Arena show will be the global pop sensation’s first and only gig in NZ before she heads off to engulf Australia. The explosive show is sure to be the perfect balance of dubious costumes and high-octane party anthems.
Christchurch’s Jol Mulholland celebrates the release of Stop And Start Again with a tour featuring his live band Mike Hall (bass/vox), Matthias Jordan (keys/vox) (Pluto/Nightchoir) and Scott Mason (Gasoline Cowboy) on drums. The talented songwriter is well known for his collaborations with the likes of Liam Finn and Anika Moa and the tour promises to be as charismatic as its prolific frontman.

Following on from the success of 2012’s Oscar Award winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, in which the Detroit native learns of his unlikely legendary status in South Africa and Australia, despite having relatively little success playing clubs and bars in his native land, Sixto Rodriguez brings his unique brand of American folk to antipodean shores once again after his sell-out 2013 shows.
Following on from the success of 2013’s The 20/20 Experience, the unstoppable Justin Timberlake brings his worlddominating tour to Vector Arena for three nights in October. Going from strength to strength with no signs of relenting, 2013 saw JT take home three Grammy Awards including Best R ‘n’ B Song for ‘Pusher Love Girl’, and three American Music Awards including Favourite Pop/ Rock Male Artist. Expect slickness.
American band Torche arrives in NZ for the first time in October to blaze a trail of unrelenting hard rock across the country. The band brings its explosive live show to the King’s Arms after “ten years shattering ears and captivating crowds”, so if you like your rock loud, uncompromising and sludgy, get down there. Ditch your Pink Floyd artwork and get springtime psychedelic at the spectacular Light Show! Billed as a “multi-sensory experience”, it will make you think twice about something we take so much for granted (light), with atmospheric installations and intangible sculptures that you can walk through. Lukas Moodysson’s critically acclaimed 2013 Swedish-Danish drama finally gets a cinematic release on our shores. The story revolves around three disillusioned 13 year old girls in 1980s Stockholm who form a punk band, despite being advised by all around them that punk is dead. Fortunately, the androgynous trio doesn’t let this or their lack of instruments or talent get in their way.
Robert Downey Jr. takes a break from tinkering with robotic daywear and assembling formidable superteams to take a trip back to his hometown in Indiana, to find that his estranged father (Robert Duvall) is suspected of murder. A change of pace for RDJ and with David Dobkin (The Wedding Crashers) in the director’s chair, expect some laughs to accompany the drama.

This series chronicles the intricate relationship between sex and music in modern culture over recent decades. From the 1950s when 3% of songs in the charts referenced sex, to 2009 when a total of 92% of hits were sex-related, this series explores how our sexual behaviors and musical tastes have evolved in tandem.

Ben Affleck ACTOR, DIRECTOR, SCREENWRITER and Oscar-winner Ben Affleck was preparing for his next directorial project when the opportunity to work with David Fincher on Gone Girl arose. Affleck postponed his production to take the role of Nick Dunne, a former journalist who becomes the prime suspect when his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) goes missing. Gone Girl the novel has already topped best-seller lists around the world, becoming a publishing phenomenon. The book, which explores marriage and the media against the backdrop of a troubled economy, was written by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. What were your first thoughts on the character of Nick and the story in general? I knew that it was going to be a deceptively hard part to play because the audience’s perspective on the character had to be delicately calibrated – the idea being that you can change what you think about this guy as the story goes along. Neither David or myself wanted to do it in a way that wasn’t realistic or wasn’t dramatic. So we had to fine-tune little things, which can be hard to do. Because it’s got to be convincing… “Oh, maybe he did it…” “Maybe he didn’t…” And if you don’t have that question in the audience’s mind, the movie isn’t going to work as well. Do you think the film reflects on modern marriage? Ultimately, the book is about marriage. So the movie is also about marriage, although it’s David’s take on it. It’s skewed again slightly. And Gillian’s take is somewhat perverse. So you have this perversion on top of a perversion! But ultimately, I think the movie is about the way that in relationships we kind of wear masks initially, to make the other person attracted to us. To change ourselves to fit in to what their expectations are, to play that role. And then there comes a time when the masks come off, you close the door and you sort of find out
who you really are and who they really are. Often there are surprises in that process. I think that is the one central thing that unites all the other themes in the book and in the movie. Do you think the film’s take on these themes will prove controversial? Well, David is… he’s either a contrarian or he’s a flat-out subversive person, but his take on these issues is quite strong and quite interesting, and, yes, quite provocative. I haven’t done a movie in 20 years where I think could create that kind of conversation between men and women that this film can. I think when people walk out of this one, they can really hold different views and feel strongly about it because I think it touches quite acutely on the ways men and women view things differently. In that way, it is similar – in terms of the potential reaction it might provoke – to films like Fatal Attraction, or even Indecent Proposal – where audiences come out divided in their sympathies? Yes. I think that’s a really astute observation because I think this film does what other kinds of cultural touchstone gender role films have done, which is take issues that are common to people in relationships, and draw them on a larger scale for the sake of illustration and discussion. At their root, they really ask, basic provocative questions. I think this is one of those films. The two main characters have both lost their jobs and moved out of the city. The careers that defined them have sort of evaporated in the modern world. Is that something the film explores at all? I think it’s explored as background; the idea of the middle class alienation. It’s sort of the erosion of the bottom end of the middle class. The sort of slow disillusionment that comes with recognizing it’s not true anymore that if you go to college and get good grades you can get a job. Or the kind of job you want. And then as that promise in America slips away, so too does some
WIN
of our moral fabric. In that sense, there is a connection that you feel to both of these people – that their better selves have slipped away with their economic circumstances because it’s corroded their esteem and done things to them, the sorts of things that make us our lesser selves. Has your experience as a director changed your acting or your understanding of acting? I think directing has made me a much better actor. It’s a great acting class. I think any actor who has the opportunity to direct a movie ought to take it. The chance to sit on the other side during the auditioning process, the performance process and the chance to cut a performance are hugely educational. At least they were for me – hugely beneficial in terms of recognizing things that work and things that don’t. The way in which, you know, you can run a whole take for one emotion and run a whole second take for another emotion. You then get those emotions more purely and edit them together to create something really interesting. That stuff is really, really valuable. How did you create the intimacy you needed to with Rosamund? In terms of: the audience has to believe you are two people who know each other inside and out completely. It was tricky. With David, because you’re shooting so much, there isn’t a lot of time to sit around, chat, get to know the “real you”. You’re really just there to work. Also, Ros is a bit enigmatic, almost inaccessible, which I think is actually good. There’s an undercurrent of alienation in the movie, so maybe this can sort of work for that. It’s easier to create warmth and smiles and the things that we associate with happy relationships than it is to flavor it with a few spices of indifference and resentment. You know, loathing… if that makes sense! IN CINEMAS THU 02 OCT
