MORRISSEY The former Smiths singer has been hospitalised on several occasions over the last 18 months and he has now revealed that doctors have also been dealing with cancerous tissue in his body. Despite his diagnosis, the 55-year-old songwriter insists he isn’t afraid of death and accepts it is something that comes to us all. Although he did not reveal what type of cancer he has, Morrissey confessed to Spanish newspaper El Mundo: “They have scraped cancerous tissues four times already, but whatever. If I die, then I die. And if I don’t, then I don’t. Right now I feel good. I am aware that in some of my recent photos I look somewhat unhealthy, but that’s what illness can do. I’m not going to worry about that, I’ll rest when I’m dead.”

PARIS KIRBY VISUAL ARTIST

Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? Jimi Hendrix. What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? Advanced Style – a documentary that examines the lives of seven unique New Yorkers whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their approach to ageing. Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? In my studio making art works, volunteering for other people’s art projects, or somewhere in nature exploring.

The best TV show around at the moment is… I don’t watch TV. However, I did watch a programme on an aeroplane the other day that got me going - it’s called Wild about New Zealand. Great film footage of NZ landscapes and indepth information about our national parks. The best place for a date night is… Wairau Lodge in the Coromandel. There is a treetop bath amongst the native bush overlooking a beautiful stream. You can also rockclimb up a waterfall and swim in the multiple waterholes on their property. People say you look like… Molly Ringwald.

What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi? Michael Jackson will appear.

Kittens or puppies? Puppies!! Of course it’s the li’l puppies…all of the puppies.

Your fantasy spirit animal is… I love seals...but a good friend of mine has had insight that I am an ostrich. I think she’s right.

What generic current affair has your blood boiled? National getting back into government. SEE HER WORK: PARIS KIRBY

Soul Power EARLIER THIS YEAR, Twitter was rife with speculation surrounding an event called Soulfest. I was cautious: the lineup seemed too good to be true, with a list of artists legendary, relevant but notoriously difficult to book. D’Angelo and Maxwell on the same bill – surely someone had to pull out. The most consistent rappers of the last decade, Common and Mos Def, had also agreed. Then Angie Stone, Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild signed on. Lord. The reckoning. But it was official. It’s a real thing. And it’s happening in two weeks. My bucket list is now way shorter. Soulfest hits Australia this week, before the final show in Auckland on Sunday 26 October – don’t worry, it’s Labour Weekend so many get Monday off! Held in the grassy lower grounds of Western Springs, a unique soul celebration will be in full force for ten hours straight. Us Kiwis are incredibly lucky, and have always appreciated Neo-Soul, a genre that fuses funk, hip hop, jazz and everything in between. A festival on this scale is a very special thing indeed. According to promoter John Denison, it took some networking with singer Jill Scott to call people and gather everyone onto the same stage. Slowly but surely, everyone agreed. Being a boutique festival, the venues are intimate with only 45,000 tickets available across the four cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and us in Auckland.

Alongside the amazing international artists, there’s a great selection of Kiwi talent including Aaradhna, DJ Manuel Bundy and Bella Kololo. Recently announced for the bill, Che Fu will be playing a DJ set of his hits later in the night. Maxwell, who has been given top billing, is dying to come to New Zealand. A notorious perfectionist, his recent shows are debonair blasts of revisionist soul – think Al Green and Justin Timberlake mixed into one. ‘Pretty Wings’ live will be a revelation. He closes the day’s festivities at 9pm. With a large following in Aotearoa, mainly from songs ‘Brown Sugar’ and ‘Untitled (How Does it Feel)’, D’Angelo emergence has caused a recent surge in popularity. To put the enormity of his booking into perspective, the enigma has just started touring again after a massive twelve-year break, and along with many of the acts, hasn’t visited New Zealand before. Following his rim-shot masterpiece Voodoo, D’Angelo now plays a brand of grimy funk, complete with wailing guitars. With a D’Angelo performance rare as hen’s teeth these days, his 8pm set will be simply unmissable (just don’t expect the shirt to come off). Common, on at 6.50pm, has just released an excellent new album, Nobody’s Smiling, adding to a long list of classic records including Be and No Water for Chocolate. Mos Def’s 5.40pm

set will surely be an energetic showcase of his latest tunes (anything from Black on Both Sides, please). With all this bounce to the ounce, we’re going to need something to fill up on: yup, all great soul music must be paired with great soul food. The folks at Eat Street have organised some culinary nourishment for the masses, including Burger Burger, Stumpys Pizza and Bird on a Wire stalls. There will also be a chilli cook-off, beer, coffee and non-alcoholic options for a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. You don’t have long, so I will reinforce that this particular line-up is a one-time deal. It will not happen again. With Soulfest looking to be an annual event, right now we’re the envy of the world. The musicianship for this festival is top notch, with everyone but Common and Mos Def boasting a full band. Thankfully, there are no set clashes, which means every act gets their day in the sun. The whole shabang kicks off at 11.45am – VIP and Side of Stage tickets have already sold out, with limited General Admission tickets still available. There is now a Soulfest app available for free, which gives you set times, artist bios and additional ticket info. Go get ‘em while they’re hot. doing something right.

Aloe Blacc ALOE BLACC (ALSO known as Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III) has been a staple of the LA music scene much longer than most know about; the former Stones Throw-signed singer cohosted the Sunday daytime dance party The Do Over for a number of years, as well as forming the the underground hiphop duo Emanon in his teens (he chose Aloe because his style was “smooth like lotion”). Switching to a solo sing career a decade ago, Blacc only broke through in his 30s, but unlike many musicians there was very little struggle involved in his rise to the top, admitting that initially music was mostly a hobby. Blacc’s career found traction in 2010 when his hard-times soul jam ‘I Need a Dollar’ became the theme song for HBO series How to Make it in America. And then things really exploded after appearing on megastar Avicii’s hit single ‘Wake Me Up’, which went to number one in dozens of countries and introduced his voice to millions of listeners. Although Blacc’s story isn’t one of struggle, his parents’ was a bit of a rags-to-riches affair. Growing up in Panama they were incredibly poor, but by the time Blacc was born in suburban Orange County, California, his father was a rising star in the US Army. Blacc was a diligent student academically and also started learning the trumpet at age nine. While lessons were a good excuse for a break from the classroom, there was a fundamental shift when his parents decided to stop hiring his trumpet and purchase one outright. “Yeah, that was a formative moment for me,” as was his exposure to LL Cool J in fourth grade. “I spent those early days growing up listening to American soul music – salsa, merengue, reggae, calypso,” Blacc explains, then continues to expound on the influence of his friends’

parents, who listened to the classic rock (“Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead..”) his parents did not. Most influential though were his peers and the hip hop music they sought out together. “We all loved hip hop music”, he enthuses, “but there wasn’t any hip hop culture where I was growing up. We’d go to other cities like LA for that.” After teaming up with hip hop producer Exile in 1995, the pair became known as Emanon: “It’s no name backwards.” They made and released hip hop music as Blacc continued through school and then University, having won a scholarship to the University of Southern California to study communications and linguistic psychology. “I like words,” he states matter-of-factly. “I like playing with words, putting them together and seeing how they make me feel. As well as questioning how they might make the rest of the world feel.” In 2006 Blacc signed with Stone’s Throw Records, after label head Chris Manak (known as Peanut Butter Wolf) heard Blacc and immediately offered him a contract for the 2006 full-length Shine Through: “I wasn’t expecting to be signed as a vocalist to any record label, but they heard a couple of songs and signed me. By this stage Blacc had become more focused on songwriting, a move inspired in part by his social consciousness. Infusing old-school funk and soul with a uniquely modern flavour, Shine Through was released later that same year, receiving significant media attention. In 2010 Blacc was once again in the spotlight, after the release of his second record, Good Things. A commercial success, Good Things was certified gold in a number of countries and hit double platinum sales. “It was important for starting my career as a solo artist, and confirmation that I was

His third solo album, and first for major label Interscope, 2014’s Lift Your Spirit does exactly what the label says, via emphatic, funk-folk-soul that’s a little Bill Withers and perhaps a touch Stevie Wonder. Featuring production by Pharrell, DJ Khalil and Rock Mafia Blacc explains the variations between his three long players: “The first album was not so much a studio album, as it was mostly recorded in my bedroom with a keyboard and some instruments and featured everything I was interested in. The next one was such a different process, recorded in a studio in New York and we focused mainly on soul. This new album is definitely a mix of genres again, but specifically hip hop, folk and soul.” Songwriting, Blacc enthuses, “is the most fun I have with music. I’m glad I have experience as an MC too, because it gives me this facility with words. It also helps me to edit, narrow down the focus of a song and communicate the plot, but also find the right melodies.” The soul singer goes on to explain how he approached these latest songs in a new way: “The largest challenge was to know what made sense to put on album, after attempting a writing process that has performing in mind.” He surmises that this hasn’t translated that well. But success or no, Blacc is most certainly a storyteller, with tales that are an amalgamation of his own life experience and what he sees going on around him. “Sometimes they’re direct and sometimes indirect… sometimes they’re just made up. A song like ‘Wake Me Up’, that’s less life experience and more reflection on the here and now.” Also one hell of a live performer, Blacc is headed back to NZ shores for the third time this October. Of NZ he says he appreciates, “the clean air, clean water and lots of green. The people are extremely nice too… there’s a good energy.” He says the show will be unique because the music is different, but the vibe will still be, “about a party and having fun.” REN KIRK

was absolutely wonderful – when we started, we weren’t expecting anything. Some of us met through work and said ‘Let’s give this a go.’ So it’s great to be part of a situation where your song is still very popular. I’d go as far as to say it’s now a national anthem.” And Mr. Olive is not far off. The song continues to rake in royalties, both for the current band and original singer Errol Brown, who left in 1986. They’ve recently hired another singer in Kennie Simon, who – get this – was in a Hot Chocolate cover act. Olive liked the tribute so much that he invited Simon on tour.

Hot Chocolate IF YOU’VE BEEN to a 50th, wedding, strip club or flat party, chances are you know your Hot Chocolate. Their hit ‘You Sexy Thing’ has become the feel-good tune of the century. A nondiscriminatory paean to the miracle of women, the song has transcended the disco era and now applies to me, you and your momma too. Lofty accolades, sure. But Hot Chocolate are tastier than you remember, and there’s one opportunity to drink it all up: Tuesday 21 October at Auckland’s Bruce Mason Theatre. Speaking to original bass player Patrick Olive, the band had very fortunate beginnings. For an act that “wasn’t even a proper band, just a bunch of normal working guys”, things suddenly got real. Their first single, recorded as the Hot Chocolate Band, was a reggae cover of John Lennon’s ‘Give Peace a Chance’, a cover that needed approval from The Beatles’ own label, Apple Records. Lennon reportedly enjoyed it, and invited them into the Apple offices. “Fortunately for us, he was there the day we went to gain approval. The security man allowed us in, and Lennon personally gave us the A-OK to cover his song.” But following this amazing

push, The Beatles broke up and the label was no more. So Hot Chocolate had to rethink things. They did soul and funk in the early days – but the band’s big break was disco. Olive is still surprised at the success of ‘You Sexy Thing’. “To release a song like that … I mean, you can’t imagine how people reacted in the seventies. We were basically this boy band who were yelling “Hey, you sexy thing!” at people. But it worked out very well, especially with the ladies – who we wrote it for in the first place.” Initially, the song wasn’t anything special to the band – delegated to the B-side of another track. “We sent our single ‘Blue Night’ to (American radio) to get played, and they said “What are you guys doing?! ‘Sexy Thing’ can’t be a B-side!” So it was resung at a higher octave and made into the A-side.” This sexy accident of a song had further reappraisal with its inclusion in the 1997 film, The Full Monty, a runaway hit that made millions worldwide. This caused ‘Sexy’ to chart again, making it one of the only recordings to chart in three consecutive decades.

“Kennie’s settled in extremely well, and he’s more than happy performing. Seeing him dressed like Errol with the white jacket and trousers – I was over the moon!” But this ain’t no tribute act – importantly, most of the original players are here, including Tony Connor and Harvey Hinsley. Hinsley is the man behind all those distinct, classic synthesized guitar lines in ‘Emma’, ‘Every1’s a Winner’, ‘So You Win Again’ and yes, ‘You Sexy Thing’. Along with Olive’s rumbling thumb, the one that drives ‘Heaven’s in the Back Seat of My Cadillac’ and ‘Brother Louie’ – well, you’d better believe in miracles when they play here. In a 40-year career, Olive has many personal milestones. “Performing to Lady Diana the evening before her marriage to Prince Charles was unforgettable. Also, being the first British band to play in Russia.” Most importantly, the man is happy to be on the road. Speaking on their 2014 show: “We’re playing all of the songs that the people love to hear, participate and dance to. It’s going to be livelier with even more Hot Chocolate.” A guilty pleasure, maybe – but I’ve never denied myself a Hot Chocolate and I’m not about to. JAKE EBDALE
