Born in the secluded town of Katherine, Australia, C.W Stoneking’s love of the blues was nurtured in some of the most Godforsaken bars of Australia’s outback before travelling the country with his band The Blue Tits. Now, after a string of globally successful albums including King Hokum, Jungle Blues & Goin’ Boogaloo the Aussie blues enigma brings his live show to Auckland in November.
Twins Benji and Joel Madden of Maryland pop-punk band Good Charlotte (and of course Australia’s The Voice) bring their new side-project to NZ in November. Formed from various Auckland bands, Racing is Edward Knowles and Sven Pettersen (The Checks), Izaac Houston (Space Creeps) and Daniel Barrett (Sherpa). Manchester Orchestra (the epitome of misnomers) bring their raucous-yetnuanced brand of melodic rock to the Powerstation in November. Why has Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker captivated generations of adults and children alike? Adapted from E.T.A Hoffman’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, Tchaikovsky was initially reluctant to write the work, as he found the story lacking in fantasy. How, then, did he put together this torrent of melodic invention, one of the greatest and best-known ballet scores? Find out in November.
Firebrand pianist Eldar Nebolsin’s talents will be put to good use in Tchaikovsky’s luminescent Piano Concerto No. 2. By contrast, it is with a gentle delicacy that Ravel unravels his wonderfully sweet and whimsical Mother Goose Suite. Conductor Michael Stern illuminates the glistening colours of the orchestra throughout this opulent evening.

THE FOO FIGHTERS As the build-up to the Foo Fighters’ eighth album continues, everyone is mostly in the dark about what Sonic Highways actually sounds like – journos included. Not content simply to release another award-winning, chart-busting, stadium-shaking record, the album follows in the footsteps of an eight-part television show documenting Grohl and his Foo Fighters (Taylor Hawkins, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett) recording their album. On the go. Easily the band’s most ambitious project to date, the eight songs are recorded in different studios across eight US cities, featuring a roster of guest spots from the likes of Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, blues star Gary Clark Jnr, the Eagles’ Joe Walsh and punk pioneer Joan Jett. The HBO series documenting the eightcity odyssey during which the record was created is directed by Grohl, and sees the Foos tapping into the musical

heritage and cultural fabric of Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York. The words for each track were written in an unprecedented and experimental style, with Grohl leaving the lyrics till the last minute and drawing inspiration from the experiences, interviews and personalities in each city. Grohl’s 2013 feature film directorial debut, the Grammy-winning Sound City, was a celebration of the human element in the creation and recording of music. This latest effort is, in Grohl’s words, “a love letter to the history of American music.” Each episode explores the regional identity of a different city – how each region shaped the musicians in their formative years, and in turn the impact these people have on the cultural community, and ultimately showcasing and their common bond: each artist, regardless of genre or locale, started as an average kid with dreams of making music and making it big. Bass player Nate Mendel tells how the concept started with an idea to record in different cities all over the world, before deciding to concentrate on America. “We did the last album, went
on tour with a bunch of musicians, and there were lots of opportunities to talk about what we were going to do next. So when Dave came up with this idea we thought it was pretty cool, but kind of, how are we gonna do that? Can we really pull it off? Eventually we decided just to focus on America, which gave the project more coherence, and getting into the detail of each city; the legends of the local music scene, the geography, the studios.” While it was always part of the plan to talk to musicians in each city, to let their stories and shared experiences help inform the resulting track, actually playing on the tracks was a natural evolution from this unique creative process. “We had the guitarist from Cheap Trick (Rick Nielsen) in the studio, and at one point he just says, ‘Are you gonna let me play on your fuckin’ song or what?’ We were kinda like, ‘Oh yeah, great… let’s do that’,” Mendel laughs before adding, “He’s such an incredible guitar player, it was really cool just watching him.” The different cities and studios the Foos recorded in each had special significance, such as Seattle where Grohl made the first Foo Fighters
record, or Chicago where they recorded with the producer Nirvana worked with. “I’m a bit of a pessimist,” Mendel admits, “and kept waiting for it to turn into a shitty experience. I kept thinking, one of these will be a dud… but there wasn’t one. Oddly enough, the least enjoyable place was Seattle, because we knew the city already. We worked in the middle of town and it was much more like making a normal record.” But even in Seattle significance was derived from recording at Robert Laing Studios, not to mention working with Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie: “Robert Laing, he just dug into the hillside and made a cavern and put a studio in there, which he never really finished. So it was like, wow, we’re gonna make a record at Rob Laing’s place… and it’s the weirdest place, this gigantic concrete bunker of a room.” While Sonic Highways could be a metaphor for how the people involved in the album came together, it’s also about connecting the people to the places – a musical map. There’s a sense of exploration, of discovering the family tree of American music, right from the origins of blues, to the birth
of hip hop and punk, and all informed by the musicians the band worked with. “We’d come to a city and start recording an instrumental, then Dave would interview musicians from the city and write the lyrics, which was a whole new way of writing.”
go places we’ve haven’t gone before, “ he pauses before adding, “but they’re such nice little additions to the arena we usually work in… like in DC, where we basically broke into a go-go beat. We played around it – it’s fairly subtle – but a nice homage to the city.”
Mendel fondly recalls working in the desert outside Los Angeles with Joe Walsh from The Eagles: “Joe came out to the middle of the dessert and he played like the absolute pro that he is. It was really nice of him to come all the way out there and he was just such a gentleman about it… you know, someone who’s so legendary in what they do. And after Joe played, I asked him if he could show me what he’d just done and I got to watch up close what he did.” Keep an ear out for a classic Southern feel and layers of ‘Hotel California’ in this one!
While Sonic Highways shows the band’s desire to search out their musical roots and memories of transcendent moments, it’s also an interesting way for the band to push themselves musically, to explore and develop. As heroes to many, there is also something endearing about the Foos meeting and working with some of their own idols. And as cities are changed by the people that go there, so the reverse can be said as any place changes the people, and when the masterpiece is finally unveiled there might be a slightly new Foo Fighters musical identity.
And how do the songs sound? Mendel says they are recognisably FF songs, but a little looser: “If you listen closely you’ll hear the different studios, but a lot of the sound is very consistent. Where it gets weird is when guests come in… not super weird, but the music does
