use a with nouns that begin with a cosonant sound. (b, c, d, f, etc.). For example: He’s a baker.


AN We

use an with nouns that begin with a vowel sound. (a, e, i, o, u). For example: 

He’s an electrician.


UNEMPLOYED AND RETIRED  We

don’t use a or an with unemployed and retired because that are adjectives.  For example:  Don’t say: I’m an unemployed. She’s a retired. We say: I’m unemployed. She’s retired.
