Over 25 years a er his last show, Milan pays homage to the great photographer with an exhibition of his most iconic portraits and fashion images. The show aims to guide visitors to discover Avedon’s photographic language through more than 100 images.

The first Italian retrospective dedicated to Max Ernst, a pivotal painter in the artistic history of the 20th century. More than 400 works between paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages, jewels and illustrated books coming from museums, foundations and private collections, both Italian and foreign. During the opening months of the exhibition, there will also be a series of side events, in particular the review “Max Ernst, il Surrealismo e il Cinema”.

Whereas the Duomo of Milan is among the most famous cathedrals in the world and Leonardo’s Last Supper is mostly known to everyone, only few know about the other Milanese churches. They are all rich in history and art and share a very particular devo tion: that of Saint Ambrose. It is connected with the music and the hymns simplified by Ambrose precisely to allow a greater and more joyful par ticipation. A er all, it is in this city that the Carnival lasts a few more days, and so does Ad vent. It perfectly shows the en terprising and reserved spirit of the Milanese people who are always reluctant to reveal their churches. It is a great opportu nity to discover a different Mi lan, more intimate and linked to its ancient traditions that are intertwined with the fig ure of Saint Ambrose, bishop by chance and statesman by vocation. But also the capital of the Western Roman Empire (from 286 to 402) and the idea

of a united Italy conceived by the far-sighted Gian Galeazzo Visconti who wanted to build the largest church in the world (now the third): the Duomo. Dedicated to the Nativity of Saint Mary, the Cathedral was built from the early Christian churches of Santa Tecla and Santa Maria Maggiore. The project started in 1386 when the Milanese, wanting to reaf firm the importance of Milan compared to Pavia where the Visconti resided, designed it like the others, made of brick. But soon, the ambitious Gian Galeazzo took over the works and built it in marble. And ma jestic, in European style, for it had to become the heart of the Kingdom of Italy. He called in master builders from Europe and chose the pink-grey mar ble of Candoglia coming from the quarries in Val d’Ossola owned by the Visconti. Thus, throughout six centuries and eventful times, the cathedral became the only Italian exam ple of late northern European Gothic, but with unique dif

You really shouldn’t miss a visit to the Certosa di Garegnano (also known as Certosa di Milano), founded in 1349 by Giovanni Visconti, which stands out side the city walls in what was once the village of Garegnano. Its location off the usual tourist trail makes this wonderful charterhouse the perfect place to fully enjoy one of Milan’s greatest art sites.

ferences such as the capitals on the pillars and windows in serted in solid walls. The cur rent appearance of the façade instead was only realised in the 18th century by various designers, including Filarete, Bramante, Leonardo, Giulio Romano, Bernini and Vanvitel li. The end result is a building with five naves, rich in spires and windows - 55 between the end of the 14th century and the 1980s. The famous bronze Ma donnina statue - covered with rags during the war to prevent a lighthouse effect - was made in the second half of the 1700s, while the church was complet ed by Napoleon who wanted to be crowned king of Italy in it. There is li le space between the naves and the two-pitched façade in travertine mo led bricks also in the Cathedral of Sant’Ambrogio. Built be tween 379 and 386 by Ambrose himself and dedicated to the martyrs, it still features an early Christian structure with a large four-sided courtyard overlooked by the large façade

and on two bell towers, one of the monks and one of the Can ons. In the presbytery under the octagonal lantern tower, there is a ciborium in brass and a 9th-century gold-lami nated altar by Vuolvino with engravings depicting stories about the life of Ambrose. The saint is buried, and portrayed in the Sacellum of San Vi ore on a golden sky with the dome decorated with gold leaf mo saics. And it was here that the Manichaean Augustine be came a Christian.

Built by Ludovico il Moro to be used as the family mauso leum, Santa Maria delle Gra zie is famous for Leonardo’s Last Supper. It is the second Dominican church in the city and also the second to become a UNESCO heritage site. Its construction started in 1459 on land belonging to Vimercati, a rich leader from the Sforza family. The project included a chapel for him and a cloister for the soldiers. It was built by Guiniforte Solari, the most popular architect at the time,

and completed by Bramante with the addition of an im posing cubic tribune and the hemispherical dome that gives light to the entire church. Be sides the Last Supper, it was also famous for some portraits of the dukes made by Leonar do himself, unfortunately de stroyed. But the ultimate proof of the creativity and genius of Bramante is the fake apse of Santa Maria presso San Satiro, a small but charming church in Via Torino. It was built in the 9th century in honour of Ambrose’s brother. When Bra mante renovated it at the end of the 1400s, he added a unique optical effect: he was able to create the illusion of an apse almost 10 metres deep, like the sides of the transept, in just 97 cm of space. And if the perfect acoustics of the church of Sant’Eufemia made Maria Callas choose it for recording numerous arias, San Lorenzo Maggiore in Porta Ticinese is a gem of perfect geometry. ital, it was the first to be built as a square inserted in a circle. That is, a centrally planned church. And although there is li le information about it, the theories are incredible: from the temple of Hercules to the spa of Nero. A well-preserved example of Roman architec ture is its large colonnade. The last church with a Greek cross plan inspired by Bramante (be fore the Veto Tridentino) is the baroque church of Sant’Ales sandro in Zebedia. Located very close to the Duomo, the church was built on what was originally the Roman prison of Zebedeo where the young Saint Alexander of Bergamo was imprisoned and martyred. Today, it is considered the link between late Mannerism and Baroque.

Built in the mid-1200s, as a sign of gratitude to the Ve netians who helped Milan in the ba le against Frederick I, the Augustinian church of San Marco is the second lon gest church in the city a er the Duomo and one of the

dearest to the Milanese. He housed Luther and Mozart who, a teenager at the time, practised a long time with the precious sixteenth-century organ; also Verdi in 1874, who here wrote and directed the Mass in Requiem in memo ry of Manzoni. It features the beautiful chapel Foppa with frescoes by mannerist painter Lomazzo and statues of Saints Ambrose, Mark and Augustine by Giovanni di Balduccio at the entrance. Remains of the Magi, instead, could be found in the church of Sant’Eustorgio, built in the place where the oxen which carried the relics collapsed from fatigue. They remained there until the 12th century when Frederick I took them to Cologne. They were partly given back in 1904 and placed in the sarcophagus in the right transept. Only a gold medal remains of the Magi, ex posed at Epiphany. From the thirteenth century, it is the main seat of the Dominicans who also used the square for burning people at the stake

during the Inquisition period. It is also the burial side of Saint Peter Martyr, the arch-enemy of the Cathars, buried in an altarpiece by Balduccio that was later moved to the chap el Portinari. And it is really a gem the church of San Maur izio al Monastero Maggiore. It is a church with a single nave, completely frescoed, which still features the partition wall. It belonged to the Benedictine nuns (the monastery closed by Napoleon is now an Archaeo logical Museum) and had early Christian origins: It was re stored in the 16th century and frescoed by the Leonardeschi painter Bartolomeo Luini for the powerful Bentivoglio fam ily that is also portrayed. In the counterfacade, there are frescoes by Simone Peterzano and also frescoes by Arcimbol di in the chapel of the Baptist. The nave of the nuns features instead a beautiful Ark of Noah by Vincenzo Foppa. Another gem is the sixteenth-century organ by Gian Giacomo Anteg nati, entirely mechanical.

sh streets that define its boundaries - Via Monte Napoleone, Via Alessandro Manzoni, Via della Spiga and lastly Corso Venezia.

As well as leading fashion houses, the Fashion Qua drilateral is also studded with jewellers, perfume ries and ateliers where visi

tors can discover the latest trends simply by browsing the window displays. And then there are restau rants and cafés perfect for an aperitif, brunch or a stop for a first rate dinner. Every year for some time now, Main Streets Across the World, the annual report listing top shopping stre ets across the globe, ranks the Fashion Quadrilateral among the top positions, on a par with the likes of Fi h Avenue, New York and Avenue des Champs Ely sees, Paris. It’s hardly sur prising – it’s a special pla ce, with a refined, elegant atmosphere that seems unchanging, but which on

Starting from Via Monte Napoleone we come to the long-established Vhernier, which creates unique bespoke jewellery. The district’s most famous street is Via Monte Napole one. As the name implies, it was dedicated to Napo leone and was inaugurated in 1804, at the height of Na poleonic rule. However, it became one of the world’s leading shop ping streets only some ye ars later, starting in the 1950s. Making this area even more appealing are the numerous historic bu ildings, house museums, cinemas, bookstores, and antiques shops.

Via Sant’Andrea is a small street that intersects Via della Spiga, parallel to Via del Gesù: we are thus in the heart of the celebra ted district where ancient courtyards are occupied by ateliers and showrooms. The street hosts a real gem, Palazzo Morando - inhabi ted over the centuries by various families of the Mi lanese aristocracy, the first owners were the Casati, who bought it at the end of the sixteenth century. Tra ces of the seventeenth-cen tury decoration of the buil ding from this family’s time remain in two salons on the main floor, located in the rear wing overlooking the garden. Today the building houses the Milan Fashion Museum

The last side of the qua drilateral, Corso Venezia, is the street that connects two of Milan’s most popular shopping areas: San Babila, entrance to the Quadrilate ro, and Corso Buenos Aires, a favourite with the city’s younger shoppers.

From here, continuing nor th of the city, you will find the Indro Montanelli Gar dens, a park in the Liberty style favoured by the most sophisticated Milanese middle classes of the time.

The Monza circuit celebrates its centenary anniversary and tells us a thousand stories

six kilometres of asphalt crossing one of the largest fenced parks in Europe. It has been the set of epic challenges, great victories and unforge able tragedies. It witnessed glorious eras and unique moments for the world of sport and for all of Italy. When it was first built, it was the emblem of an Italy that was inspired by Futurism and by man’s need for speed, and today it is the emblem of an Italy united under a red flag surmounted by a black pranc ing horse. The Monza Circuit adds a new chapter to its long history, a book that motor en thusiasts have been reading for exactly a hundred years: that is in fact the number of years that have passed since the circuit

was built – in just 110 days – and that makes it the third oldest in the world a er the legendary Indianapolis circuit and the less known Brooklands circuit. On 11 September, the circuit celebrat ed its birthday with its “old time friends”: the Formula 1 racing cars that arrived in Monza for a decisive stage in the race for the top of the World Drivers’ Cham pionship between Verstappen and Leclerc, as the Dutchman driver wanted to prove once again that he is one step, or may be two, ahead of everyone else. For three days, racing fans oc cupied the 130 thousand seats distributed between stands and court to watch the single-seat er cars whizzing by, so different from those that a century ago

started the myth of Monza. Monza, the city of the coronation of Charlemagne and Napoleon with the crown displayed in the Duomo; Monza with its 18th-cen tury Royal Palace, the Arengario and its 700-hectare fenced park; Monza that recently celebrated its first historic promotion in the Serie A football league and it now adds the centenary anniversary of its racing circuit to its “royal” history, destined to last for many years to come. An indelible trace has remained of the 5.5-kilometre ring connected to a 4.5-kilome tre one, as well as the Paraboli ca, one of the most iconic bends of the F1 world, today dedicated to the unfortunate Michele Al boreto, a former Ferrari driver. In 1961, there was the final deci sion to exclude the High-Speed Ring from the Gran Premio race for single-seater cars: the choice was due to the tragic accident of Wolfgang von Trips on Ferrari, who lost control of the car right at the entrance of the Parabolica bend, killing himself and eleven spectators. And the list of the great drivers who died driving a car in Monza also includes Alberto Ascari, who in 1955 crashed his Ferrari on the bend now dedicated to him. But speed is always the essence of the Monza circuit: the re cord for the highest speed ever reached, 370.1 km/h by Kimi Räikkönen on the McLaren in 2005, which has never been beaten for 17 years; the greatest display of courage and technol ogy never again reached by any

Formula 1 car. As a sports ven ue of international value, the Monza Circuit opens its doors to racing enthusiasts on the days of the races of the various cat egories but also when the large royal park is quiet. The racing circuit well deserves its position among the most popular tourist destinations in Lombardy, and consequently in Brianza, also thanks to a program designed specifically for speed and car lovers. The offer includes a tour of the most iconic locations in cluding a visit to a photographic exhibition, the press room, the briefing room and the podium, as well as the direction room and even a ride on the track; not with a Formula 1 car of course, but on board a mini-van or tour ist bus along the track in all its length. Those who want to have a more thrilling visit can choose the combined ticket-visit ac cess and go on a tour of the cir cuit during the days of the race accompanied by motorsport celebrities that will reveal inter esting anecdotes and secrets of the circuit to the group.

RIBOT

It was 1975 when Mauro and Cole e, two young spouses, fell in love with a restaurant just outside Milan. They then decided to give it a go and open Ribot. Today there is Niccolò, son of Mauro, who carries on the family tradition and offers the best dishes of his homeland Tuscany. Here you can taste the best cuts of meat, but also cold cuts, Montalcino macaroni, cheeses and pasta. A special mention is given to the winery, which offers the greatest classics of Tuscan vineyards and not only this.

While Leonardo da Vinci was in Milan, Duke Ludovico il Moro gave him a vineyard in the centre of the city in appreciation for the magnif icent works he was creating to embellish the ducal city.

This was Leonardo’s Vine yard: reopened to the public for Expo 2015, the vineyard is located near Santa Maria delle Grazie, in the court yard of Casa degli Atellani, the fi eenth-century resi dence of Ludovico il Moro and the last remaining trace of the ancient Borgo delle Grazie. It was originally a fortress built by Gian Galeazzo Vis conti in the 15th century. One hundred years later, Frances co Sforza made it his noble residence a er taking posses sion of Milan. Ludovico Sforza founded one of the most so phisticated courts in Europe and called the best artists of the time to embellish the castle, including Leonardo da Vinci and Filarete.

1865 by Vi orio Emanuele

II, hence its name. From its inception, the Galleria was a meeting place for the Mila nese bourgeois, earning it the nickname Milan’s living room.

It has a cross plan with an octagonal iron and glass roof, 47 metres high. The visitor’s gaze is drawn toward the floor mosaics, which represent the coats of arms of Rome, Flor ence, Turin and Milan. THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

ARTLINE

Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Ar tline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.

BUS

In Milan there are more than a hundred bus routes and 4 trolleybus lines, making this

one of the best ways of ge ing around the city. On Fridays and Saturdays, Milan’s night buses run every hour be tween 2 am and 5 am. Tickets for the bus (and other public transport) can be bought at metro stations, newspaper kiosks, tobacconists’ and from the ATM Milano app. A standard ticket is valid for 90 minutes and covers one journey on ATM public trans port; it costs €1.50. You can also choose a daily ticket (€7), a three-day ticket (€12) and other options.

METRO

With five lines, 111 stations and 94.5 kilometres of rails, Milan’s metro system is the largest in Italy. It operates every day from 6:00 to 00:30 (7:00 to 19:30 on 25 December and 1 May). The frequency of trains at major stations varies from 2 to 4 minutes, depend ing on the month and the timetable.

TRAIN

Milano Centrale station is the main hub connecting Milan to major Italian and Europe an cities, and Cadorna station offers links to destinations in Lombardy. Other state-run railway stations are Garibal di, Lambrate, Milano Rogore do and Porta Genova. The

main overland stations cor respond with the metro lines, making travel in the area easy and quick.

Milan Malpensa international (Code IATA: MXP) is the larg est of the city’s airports. It is 49 kilometres north-west of the Lombardy capital, with con nections by Malpensa Express train or numerous shu le bus services.
