2020 - 2021 ACTIVITY GUIDE
1
Girl Scouts are no strangers to change. In fact, they seek out changes, take action, and lead the way to make the world a better place. Over the past few months changes have been abundant, and while not all have been easy, Girl Scouts have embraced them, learned to adapt, and made the best of our new normal. Why? Because Girl Scouts are UNSTOPPABLE. Whether it’s learning an awesome new skill like how to sew a face mask or exploring the world of cyber security due to increased online activity, Girl Scouts have proven that the possibilities are endless when they accomplish their goals. And the best news? There is so much more to come this year with Girl Scouts! In 2020-2021, Girl Scout activities will look different than they usually do, but will have the same purpose of building girls of courage, confidence, and character…girls that are unstoppable! Our activities will be innovative and will challenge girls of all ages, interests, skills, and abilities to explore entrepreneurship, life skills, STEM, and the outdoors. With returning favorites coming to girls in new ways - like Virtual TechnoQuest and Teen Camporee - and new limited-time events that will encourage girls to participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience spontaneously, we cannot wait to see how our girls continue to learn and grow. One thing is for certain—Girl Scouting never stops! Whether in person or virtual, we will continue to empower all girls as they discover their passions and tackle their dreams, one program and life-changing experience at a time!

Activity Registration Information Use this guide to… READ… about the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and changes this year. REGISTER… individually or as a troop - check our Activity Calendar online for more info, then register. At Girl Scouts, the health, safety, and well-being of our members and the member experience remain top priorities. Our events this year will be planned based on current health and safety protocols as guided by the Governor’s office, CDC and other health agencies. Because this is constantly evolving, our events will be added to our Activity Calendar as they are finalized, rather than including them all in our Activity Guide as usual. We thank you for your patience during this time! While we love seeing our Girl Scouts in person, many of our events at the beginning of the year will take place on a virtual platform. We will make changes throughout the year as the situation evolves.

When girls spend quality time outdoors and increase their exposure to nature, they thrive physically, emotionally, and intellectually. This means that it is especially important for girls to spend time outside now, when many activities have turned virtual‌ and we are here to guide you in doing so!

Creative problem-solving skills, better grades, and a possible future STEM career? Yes, please! Our STEM programs challenge Girl Scouts to be innovators and explore the world of STEM in new, exciting ways. STEM fields need more females taking the lead and our programs can help girls get there. Girl Scouts are unstoppable in tackling real-word problems to make a lasting change, and Girl Scouts provides opportunities to engage in the scientific method and to make mistakes and try again - a process through which she will develop the confidence she needs to truly make a difference in STEM.

Girl Scout Award and Leadership Opportunities Girls Scouts Highest Awards Each year, the Girl Scout Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards are presented to girls who have planned and executed far-reaching projects in response to pressing community needs. In the process, girls gain skills in leadership, project planning, time management, and budgeting, plus confidence to last a lifetime. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award Girl Scouts are the youth leaders their communities need to create solutions to the new and ever-changing challenges that arise from this global pandemic. We recognize the impact of the COVID-19 closures and ‘stay at home orders’ are having on Girl Scouts who want to earn the highest awards. We’re committed to supporting girls with the time and space they need to adjust to these changes, so when they’re ready, they can safely harness their enthusiasm and facilitate meaningful solutions with their communities! To ensure all Girl Scouts who want to earn the Highest Awards this year have the opportunity, Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines is offering a 3-month deadline extension from September 30 to December 31, 2020 for Girl Scouts who are graduating from 5th grade (Juniors who seek to earn the Bronze Award), 8th grade (Cadettes who seek to earn the Silver Award) and 12th grade (Ambassadors who seek to earn the Gold Award) this year. These Girl Scouts will bridge to the next program level officially on October 1, 2020 and, without this extension, would be no longer eligible to earn the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, respectively. Girl Scouts should have a project identified, a plan in place and be ready to take action no later than September 30, 2020.
Girl Scout Gold Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. A girl earning the Girl Scout Gold Award will be joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference in their communities both locally and globally. The Girl Scout Gold Award follows the Standards of Excellence and challenges you to develop yourself as a leader, achieve the Girl Scout Leadership Outcomes, and make a mark on your community that creates a lasting impact on the lives of others. Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with the completion of two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys or having earned the Silver Award and completing one Senior or Ambassador Journey. Each Journey completed gives you the skills you need to plan and implement your Take Action project. After you have fulfilled the Journey(s) requirement, 80 hours is the suggested minimum hours to complete the 7 steps to go Gold: identifying an issue, investigating it thoroughly, getting help and building a team, creating a plan, presenting your plan and gathering feedback, taking action, and educating and inspiring others. We’re committed to providing resources to help you achieve success. In fact, we’ve launched several new resources to support you along the way including our new Girls Guide To Going Gold, Girl Scout Gold Award online orientation, hands-on Gold Award workshops, and virtual office hours-- all to help prepare you to create sustainable change.

Girl Scout Silver Award Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award gives a Girl Scout Cadette the chance to show that she is a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving her community. Earning the award puts girls among an exceptional group who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world. The prerequisite to earning your Girl Scout Silver Award is to complete a Girl Scout Cadette Journey. Once you complete your Journey, the suggested minimum time for earning your Girl Scout Silver Award is 50 hours. You can start by planning the time in parts, then dividing it up by the steps. Get started on your Girl Scout Silver Award by completing the Girl Scout Silver Award training module on our council webpage.
Girl Scout Bronze Award The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. When you go for the Bronze Award, you represent what Girl Scouts can achieve in their communities. And, of course, you want to do that in a way that’s fun for you— and for everyone else involved, too! Earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award involves the time to complete a Journey, and then a suggested minimum of 20 hours building your team, exploring your community, choosing your project, planning it, putting your plan in motion, and spreading the word about your project. To learn more, complete the online Girl Scout Bronze Award training available on our council web page.
