CAMPUS COMPASS Understanding Yourself

There’s more to self-discovery than just knowing your favourite colour. Nashrah Ghazali helps you understand your key-components better.

DISCOVER YOUR KEY COMPONENTS

T

here are many aspects within yourself to be discovered to ease your journey in this road towards university. It’s important – just read on. Please. Without further ado, let’s jump right into things that you should start thinking about.

Skills

There are two kinds of skills that you will constantly hear of: soft skills and hard skills. Soft skills refer to people skills. These include communication, networking and leadership skills, amongst other things. (Google ‘soft skills’ for a more in-depth explanation!) Hard skills, on other hand, refer to technical skills. What does technical even mean? Technical skills are the abilities and knowledge needed to perform specific tasks. These include writing skills, speaking a foreign language and even speed typing. It’s crucial for you to identify the skills that you already have and polish them. You should also have a clear understanding of the skills that you need to gain in order to achieve your goals.

Interests

Interest is a feeling that causes us to focus on a particular subject matter. Say, you enjoy Biology in school, it is probably because you have an interest in human anatomy. Everyone has things that they like and dislike but most don’t really bother to pay attention to them. Now, do you know what YOU are interested in? Instead of being one with the crowd that proclaims ‘I don’t know’ whenever their interests come into question, why don’t you start thinking about this right now? It’s never too early or too late to discover your interests.

CAMPUS COMPASS Understanding Yourself

At this point, you have a lot to think about: skills, interests, strengths and weaknesses. Seems overwhelming, but it will pay off in the long run. Understanding yourself is the first step in choosing what to do once you’re done with secondary school. Take your time to jot it down in our little memo pad!

Strengths

Let’s take Hulk and Quicksilver for an example. Hulk is strong but because of his huge figure, he’s not very fast. Quicksilver, on the other hand, has super speed which means he’s really, really fast. Point here is that each of us has our own strengths. We should never compare ourselves to other people because we are our own person. Okay, let’s take a step back and understand what it is – strengths are strong points and beneficial qualities that you have. Perhaps you’re good at science experiments, perhaps you have great hand at art, or even a good logic for mathematics. So, what is it?

Skills: Interests:

Weaknesses

As we know, strengths and weaknesses come hand in hand. But why should you keep in check with your weaknesses – shouldn’t you just keep it in a box and push it to the back of your mind? No. You should acknowledge your weaknesses. The reason why you need to be aware of your weaknesses is because you need to accept them as part of who you are. The thing about weaknesses is that some are easier to work on and some are harder to manage. So, you need to have a clear list of these two categories. If you talk too much, you can simply tone it down a notch but if you get distracted really easily then it will take a lot more practice for you to work on that.

Strengths: Weaknesses:

CAMPUS COMPASS Understanding Yourself

Nashrah Ghazali highlights the insights of everything passionrelated.

YOUR PASSION, YOUR MISSION (The journey of finding your true passion)

P

assion is a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards , think Liza Koshy something. Franklin speaking and showbiz. The little brown girl started as a YouTube sensation and now: an international star. You might be thinking how is this relevant to you. Well, here’s the tea; after secondary school, you will have to choose a course and go to university, very exciting stuff. But in order for you to know what and where to apply to, you should know what you’re passionate about as it will give you an idea of what you should and shouldn’t consider.

You can’t spell time without ME

It’s a mission for you to accomplish and you might be wondering, where do I start? It starts with me. Ask yourself; what is the one thing that you’d want to do for the rest of your life without getting paid? Let’s say yours is browsing through social media all the time. With this information, you can tie it back to a related course that can lead you to a career revolving social media. Here’s a tip; to figure this out, try sitting in a conducive space and avoid all distractions with a calm and positive headspace to answer the million-dollar question. Take your time to journal your answers and document your thoughts. This will help you in the long run when it’s time to decide on a course.

Adventure time

What do you do when you don’t feel like doing things that are the norm to you? Yes, that’s right, you try something new. Start thinking of things you’ve never done before and make a to-do list (if you don’t have one yet) to check-off before your SPM results day. For example, you can try writing stories or perhaps, graphic designing. Maybe that new thing you’re planning to do next week is what you’re passionate about. It’s important that you know exactly what your passion is. Don’t waste your youth studying something that you are unsure of. What are you waiting for? Start checking off that to-do list!

CAMPUS COMPASS Understanding Yourself

To conclude, passion plays a big role in your course and university decisionmaking once you graduated secondary school. You will stay passionate and motivated to move forward when you pursue a course that is driven by your passion.

......

Getting inspired

Connecting with people is so easy, it’s literally at the tip of your thumbs. Get it? Because you use your thumbs to type on your phone… LOL! There is no better way to get inspired than by speaking to people you look up to. It can be anyone you respect. Your mum, your dad, your senior from school or maybe even Malaysia’s first astronaut, Dato’ Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar. Well, it can be difficult to reach him but you can always opt to read his interview articles online.

Being wellinformed of your passion = knowing what you enjoy doing. ......

Ask questions regarding their job, their study life; basically their journey that led them to their current professional standing. This can help you gain a fresh perspective and inject inspiration to start your journey to get to where you want to be.

Surfing the internet

The internet. Ah, where do I begin? There are endless possibilities of things you could do on the internet to guide you in finding your passion. Personality tests may be a good place to start. Hop on to 16personalities.com to identify a personality type that you may resonate with. This may help provide a deeper understanding and clarity to your interests, strengths, weaknesses and everything in between. The internet is a great place to learn – even to learn about yourself. And, of course, to learn about the different university courses that would be a good fit to your personality. Remember the thing I said about reading up interview articles? Yes, you can easily find so many of those online. Or if you’re more of a listener than a reader, then you can opt to watch the interview videos on YouTube. coursesmalaysia 2020/21

CAMPUS COMPASS Understanding Yourself

Understanding the importance of knowing yourself is just as important as trying to figure yourself out. Nashrah Ghazali gives you the details.

THE WHY(S) TO THE HOW(S) Easing your decision-making

At this point of time, you need to decide on what to do after secondary school. What if I told you that it doesn’t have to be neither stressful nor difficult? This can be achieved easily once you know who you truly are. When there are so many study fields, it can get overwhelming for you to choose from. But with your awareness of your strengths and weaknesses, it will drastically be easier for you to choose a field of study comparing to those who have zero understanding of their values.

Snapping out of your fantasy

When you understand your wants and needs, finding your purpose in life will be easier. Instead of floating around without a strong standpoint, you should set goals to achieve to give your life its meaning. When you have goals, you will stop living in your own dream; instead you will work towards making it happen. It’s not wrong to have dreams, but it’s wrong for you to let that dream remain a dream. Work towards making it your reality.

CAMPUS COMPASS Understanding Yourself

A taste of self-awareness

The remedy of acceptance

It is so important to have a clear understanding of who you are. It’s a challenge trying to figure all these things about yourself but being self-aware gives you the advantage and opportunity to achieve your fullest potential.

Quit wasting your time on throwing a pity party for yourself. When you accept all aspects of who you are, living day to day life will be smooth without anything holding you back. It’s important for you to acknowledge your weaknesses and insecurities and not live in denial.

Self-awareness is having a full understanding of your personality, emotional and mental state at all times. Try mentally-listing your strengths and weaknesses from the back of your mind. Self-aware individuals would be able to do this with ease.

Last but not least, acceptance. When going through the journey of understanding yourself, you will learn about your insecurities and weaknesses. The best way to deal with this discovery is to first, accept it – and then, to address it, one by one.

Preventing burnouts

Burning out is when you lose of your sense of motivation and/or are feeling unsatisfied with what you’re doing. This can be caused by repeatedly doing something you don’t enjoy. The last thing you want is to realise that you hate what you do when you’re already too far in it. You will be spending a significant amount of your energy on your tertiary education. Be sure to choose a course based on what keeps your interests and motivates you. Your journey will be a meaningful one when you enjoy what you do. This is why it’s important to figure out what brings you a sense of enjoyment.

Understanding yourself brings about many positive outtakes during your journey after secondary school. Knowing who you are as a person will naturally lead you towards the right direction in choosing what your next step may be.

CAMPUS COMPASS Choosing Your Course

BEFORE THE EXAM: SETTING PRIORITIES SPM is around the corner. Here’s where things will start to get serious. Worry not, Nashrah Ghazali helps you prepare.

S

PM is the most anticipated exam in high school. What comes before the exam is more than just preparation. You need to also plan for your next step after SPM.

Effective study method

Prioritising subjects

Everyone has different practices when it comes to study methods. If you still can’t figure out what your study method is, it’s high time to do so. Finding an effective study method may be challenging – but don’t give up.

Nine. That’s the average number of subjects for a SPM candidate. And juggling two years’ worth of information for each subject can be overwhelming. What you need to do is to prioritise the subjects that need more attention.

Widen your horizons and try new methods such as study groups. Who knows, perhaps you work best with your peers and engaging study sessions would help you stay focused. Or, you can make notes by using acronyms, it may help you remember important facts easier. Find a study method that is the most effective method for you.

12

coursesmalaysia 2020/21

For instance, you should focus on Bahasa Melayu if that is your lowest scoring subject, while your other subjects are above average. Start early by listing out the subjects that require more effort. This is to help you sustain good grades for the rest of the year before you apply to college.

CAMPUS COMPASS Choosing Your Course

Gaining needed skills While your exams are still months away, you should use the time you have left to the fullest. Besides good grades, you will need to equip yourself with the needed skills – to be in the spotlight in comparison to the other applicants. It could either be soft and hard skills, or both. When in school, you are given the platform to polish your hard skills more than soft skills. Skills like writing, language and mathematics are examples of hard skills you can polish. If you aren’t sure what skills you should work on, just scan this QR code to find out the needed skills for different courses.

Time management No matter your age, you should always manage your time accordingly. Especially as a secondary school student, you will have school, homework, tuition classes, seminars and many more to balance out. To avoid feeling constantly fatigued, you need to have a proper schedule so that you will get enough rest and make sure to not overwork yourself. You will thank yourself for doing this now and you will see how it helps keep your life organised. You can create a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, whichever suits your workload the most.

What you need to do is to prioritise the subjects that need more attention.

CAMPUS COMPASS Choosing Your Course

AFTER THE EXAM: SELF-REFLECTION Hip hip hoo - oops, stop right there. SPM might be over but your journey to achieve your dreams is just beginning. Benny Razali thinks there are a few questions you should consider.

Y

ou anticipated SPM your whole life and now, you are done with it. What now? There are many things that you can do while you wait for your results. Why not try a session of self-reflection? Here are some of the questions you could ask yourself:

Have you figured out your options?

Did you fulfil your targeted subjects?

The subjects you took for SPM should give you an idea of the field of study that you want to pursue later. At the beginning of the year, you might have been rather chill about it and set a wide range of options to choose from. Now that SPM is behind you, it’s time for you to properly figure out whether you’ve found the one. No, not a life partner but the one field that you want to invest your time and future in. Whether it’s science, literature or law, that’s for you to find out.

But of course, before you can proceed with the field that you want, you must ace a few particular subjects for said field. For instance, if you intend to pursue medicine, you’d have to pass both Chemistry and Biology subjects with distinction (that’s A- for you) along with Bahasa Malaysia as well. For the field of engineering, Physics, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics would be the subjects you need to ace. So, how did you do? Or better yet, have you found a subject that you’re surprisingly good at?

CAMPUS COMPASS Choosing Your Course

Found something new you’re interested in? You might have your heart set on a certain field of study that you want to do after the results are out but, remember, you don’t have to limit your options just because you feel like you’re bound to your earlier plan. If you somehow discovered a new interest in a subject or a career path that you didn’t know existed before, it’s still not too late for you to start putting some effort into pursuing it. This doesn’t mean that you are abandoning your initial plan – take it as a back-up plan prepared for your further education.

Are you reconsidering your path of choice? It is never too late to venture into an entirely different path, especially since you haven’t started your tertiary education yet. Never be afraid to do the necessary research or to voice out your interest to your parents if you decide to pursue a different path. Your path is your choice and it’s all on you to figure it out. There is no rush to make your final decision as every path has its own ups and downs. Be proud of who you are and believe that you actually know what you want for your future.

So, how did better yet, you do? Or found a sub have you you’re surp ject that risingly goo d at?

CAMPUS COMPASS Choosing Your Course

WHEN CHOOSING A COURSE… …you should be equipped with all the necessary information! Fret not, Nashrah Ghazali shows you a few factors to consider before settling for a course.

Entry requirements

Course content

Before applying to a course, you need to make sure that you meet the minimum requirements. For instance, you would need an A for Biology to get into a science-based course, but if you didn’t take Biology back in secondary school, common sense dictates that you do not meet the minimum requirements.

It’s important for you to have a clear idea of the subject breakdown for the course that you intend to pursue. Don’t take things for granted; even if you think you know what the course entails, be sure to request for a clear breakdown.

It’s crucial that you apply to a course that you absolutely understand the entry requirements of. Surf the institution’s web page or get in touch directly with the university to clarify the minimum requirements to be accepted into the course of your choice. The sooner you do it, the better.

16

coursesmalaysia 2020/21

Alternatively, here’s what you can do; visit the institution’s website – read the description of each subject offered in your course. You can also further your knowledge by doing your own research through books or a muchpreferred method – asking Mr Google.

CAMPUS COMPASS Choosing Your Course

Tuition fee This factor seems to bring concern to most students in choosing their tertiary education. You can easily check the tuition fees for your course of choice by going on the institution’s website or by contacting them directly. This will give you a clearer picture on what you are paying for. Many students carry the mentality which supports the argument that expensive tuition = good education and vice versa. Can we all agree that this is completely irrational? The truth is, no matter where you’re studying, it’s completely up to you and how you make of your time in college.

Don’t take things for granted; even if you think you know what the course entails, be sure to request for a clear breakdown.

Duration The duration to complete a course may differ from one another. Some take up to four years and some are as short as eight months. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic is an external factor that may prolong the amount of time it takes to complete a course, therefore it is important for you to take note of the duration of your course of choice. How, you may ask? Again, just do a quick search on the institution’s website for the duration of the pre-university courses or visit the Options After Secondary School section on coursesmalaysia.com for relevant information on all the pre-university courses!

Course accreditation You might not at all understand what these words mean but this is absolutely important! A simpler word for accreditation is recognition. You need to make sure that your course of choice is accredited by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA). You just have to go on MQA’s website to search for qualifications based on your chosen institution. Now you might be wondering, why is this important? Well, MQA is in charge of validating the courses that are offered in Malaysia. If you plan to further your studies later on, most universities (if not all) will only consider applicants from accredited courses.

HOW TO APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS When it comes to paying for your education, scholarships are the best option. Let’s go step by step with Nashrah Ghazali on scholarship applications.

Step 1: Knowing your options As commonsensical as it may be, the very first step is to do research and have a wide view of what your options are. Your search is important as you will need to filter the scholarships that you actually qualify for when starting your application journey. Usually, scholarships are offered by most education institutions, private organisations and sometimes, even by individuals. While a huge range of scholarships exist, they are typically split into two categories: which are merit and need-based. Basically, need-based scholarships are awarded to applicants who need extra help financially. While so, merit-based scholarships are focused on the applicants’ achievements and abilities. Those achievements and abilities can be for academics, arts and athletics. So now, it’s time to find out the best scholarship for you. You can start by browsing through our scholarships tab on our website (coursesmalaysia.com) where we showcase hundreds of scholarships for you to choose from.

20

coursesmalaysia 2020/21

Step 2: Dealing with deadline As with every other thing revolving around university, scholarships are time-sensitive. There are deadlines to look out for! You need to be absolutely certain on the opening and closing dates of these scholarship applications. Timing is everything when it comes to this. Make a list to keep track of the scholarships that are of interest to you, along with the important dates, required documents and essays for the applications. Once you take note of these details, you’re well on your way to start applying for your shortlisted scholarships. The last thing you want is for you to send in a rushed application. You need to take time to compile all the needed documents and not miss any important bits of the application.

CAMPUS COMPASS All About University and Scholarships

Step 4: Acing the essay The essay. It’s the factor that makes or breaks your application. Be sure to dedicate enough time and effort into crafting an honest and impressive essay. This is your chance to express who you are on a piece of paper. Remember to prioritise quality over quantity. It doesn’t have to be a headache to write it the essay. Let’s not overcomplicate the process. Start off by reading the instructions. Make sure to write based on the directions given and not stray from it. Once that’s clear, give yourself enough time to write. Don’t rush it. A rushed essay is more likely to have more mistakes so, plan your time efficiently. Now, your job is to make it stand out of the crowd. Make it lively – incorporating your personality into the essay will help. The written essay should be proofread and edited, repeatedly. You can go to a professional to get it error-free.

Step 5: Submit and wait Documents all set? The next big (and final!) step is submission. Now you might wonder, how can you submit the application wrongly? Well, all it takes is one wrong letter in the email address or submission address and it all goes down the drain.

Step 3: Following the requirements Every scholarship is unique in its own way so it’s crucial for you to read the requirements of the scholarships you’re applying to, thoroughly. The requirements are listed out in the scholarship description so it’s not difficult for you find it.

So, be very meticulous in this process, too. You need to also confirm the submission method whether it’s online or by snail-mail. You don’t want your application to get lost and not reach its designated place! Once it’s submitted, now you will have to wait. Be optimistic and hopeful that all your hard work will pay off!

Even so, these are the most common scholarship requirements: • • • • • •

PTPTN APPLICATION PTPTN is one of the most popular ways of education funding. Let’s read what insight Nashrah Ghazali has to share.

W

hen scholarship is no longer an option, remember that you still have the chance to continue your studies with the help from the one and only, PTPTN. There are many things to know before you apply for PTPTN so let’s get into it.

What is it? Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional or better known as PTPTN is a government institution that offers tertiary education study loans for Malaysian students. These loans help students fund their education fully or partially. It also plays a role as a helping hand for the students’ living cost while they’re pursuing their higher education.

Am I eligible to apply? Before applying for the study loan, it’s mandatory to check the requirements to make sure that you are qualified to apply. The requirements for PTPTN are as follows:

Here’s how you apply through UPU: 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

6. 7. 8.

How much can I get? The amount of loan that you’ll receive depends on your institution, the course you’re pursuing and your household income. Because PTPTN is a needs-based study loan, those from the lower-income families will qualify to loan a larger amount. Applicants from private institutions will typically earn a bigger loan as the tuition fee is higher comparing to public universities. Same goes for science-related course students, they will have higher loan comparing to those taking humanities. This will help you get a better picture regarding your education funding.

How do I apply? As mentioned above, you will need to have an SSPN-i account so if you don’t have it, the first thing you have to do is head to a PTPTN counter (Google this!). The procedure is for you to open a savings account and later buy a PTPTN number from Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).

Does it cover my course? Many courses are actually covered by PTPTN. Note that it only applies to the courses that are accredited by MQA. It’s for you to do your own research before applying for this study loan. The table below shows the summarised version of the relevant courses that are and are not covered.

GOODBYE SCHOOL, HELLO UNI! Help Nashrah Ghazali help you to ace in your transition from a secondary school student to a university student!

Time management is your best friend It’s really not that complicated, manage your time wisely and your time in university will be a breeze but if you don’t, you’ll face some hard times. Time management is basically delegating time for your assignments, events and responsibilities accordingly. It’s especially important, as your class schedule is not structured like it was when you were in secondary school, it’s a lot more flexible. There are no bell rings for you to change classes and your schedule changes depending on the day and between semesters. Some classes can be up to three hours. These fluid class schedules are great in a lot of ways, but they also make effective time management skills very important. When you were still in school, you were given homework that was meant to be done in a day or two. In university, you will be given instructions to do an assignment weeks before the due date. For example, you will be assigned with work on the first week of class and the due date is Week 11. If you don’t manage your time wisely, you might forget about the assignment entirely. So, manage your time well. it’s completely up to you and how you make of your time in college. 28

New adult responsibility: Finance You are now responsible for your own financial needs and like every other student, this is a new part of your life. This is important especially when it comes to paying for tuition fees. Terms like scholarship, PTPTN may not mean anything to you now but believe me, they will soon. As a college student, one of your new responsibilities is for you to be financially fit and not misuse any financial aid or your education funding for personal purposes. Some students would withdraw more money than needed to fulfil their wants, which is completely irresponsible. The thing about having a financial loan is that no matter what your career status is, you will need to pay it back. Remember to think long term and use the money responsibly so you won’t have mountains of debts on your shoulders once you graduate from your university. Because best believe, life after university and financial planning is a whole different story.

New faces, new experience

Balanced life = happy life

No one can deny that the transition from secondary school to university can be challenging. Your friends from your secondary school might go into different universities, it’s only natural. Worry not, you will not be a lonely piece of cookie, all you have to do is step out of your comfort zone!

When in university, you will be occupied with more things than just your academics. You will be a part of many clubs and societies. This is inevitable, as sometimes you will automatically be a part of a certain society because you are in a certain course. For example, you might be involved in the English Language Society if you’re a part of an English language course.

As you embark on your journey of being a university student, whether you like it or not, you will be in a new environment. Take note that just by making one or two friends to join you in the first few months may completely change your experience in university. Now you might be wondering, how, how am I supposed to make new friends? You will meet people from different courses during orientation so you can find friends then. Or you can join clubs and societies that spark your interest. This might be the best way because you will meet people that like the same things as you. Plus, when you’re just starting university, nobody knows anyone so it’s the best time to be friends with your classmates and this will be especially helpful when you have to do group work in the future.

Moreover, going to university would probably mean you will be living alone and like most students, you will get extraordinarily excited about that. You will have invitations to different programmes, you will have friends that will constantly ask you to go out and you will have meetings after meetings. Don’t get me wrong, joining clubs and societies are great ways to make friends and follow your passion, but they can take up a lot of time too. Before committing, make sure that you know the commitment involved and have time to balance your studies with your social life. You can accomplish both with proper planning.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR PRE-U DAYS Your pre-university life is the best time for you to polish as many skills as possible. Nashrah Ghazali shares her insights on some of the skills you can obtain.

B

efore you graduate from your pre-u course, you need to equip yourself with the proper skillset to prepare you for the future. Here are some of the skills you can start gaining or polishing, today:

Communication Communication is the most important skill for a person to have. It’s the backbone of all soft skills. It’s something that you do every single day. Communication is more than just having conversations in person, it also applies to communication on other mediums like social media, emails and phone calls. Now, you might want to know: how do I amplify my communication skills? There are so many ways to do so, you can start with something easy, like making eye contact during your face-to-face conversations, as this shows a sense of confidence and you are acknowledging the other person’s presence in the room. When in university, you will have to give many presentations, which will slowly build up your ability to speak to a big group of people confidently. Or, you can even take up communication courses to get the theoretical lessons. Good communication skills are crucial in order for you to get your message conveyed effectively and accurately. 30

Multitasking Multitasking is the ability to do more than one task at a time. It’s an amazing asset to have, as it saves your time and it boosts productivity. Although it’s a valuable skill to have, it will take some time to get used to. The more you practice, the easier it is for you to do it. This skill is often associated with productivity and it is believed that possessing this skill can improve your performance. However, research has found that multitasking is more of a time-sharing activity instead of a juggling activity between tasks.

Here’s what you can do to improve your multitasking abilities: 1.

Make a to-do list and keep it in hand.

2.

Prioritise your tasks.

3.

Work on related tasks simultaneously.

4.

Pay full attention and avoid distractions.

5.

Know your boundaries by delegating tasks to others.

6.

Practice, practice, practice.

Adaptability

Teamwork

We tend change our lifestyle to match our world which is constantly evolving. This is what adaptability is, it’s a skill that refers to one’s ability at adjusting to a new situation. As you will be transitioning from a pre-u student to a degree student soon, adaptability skills are important for you as you need to cope with your new surroundings. The new normal is another example of where adaptability comes into play. When the lockdown was implemented in Malaysia due to COVID-19, students had to adapt to being quarantined at home as well as learning online from home. Adaptability is a natural skill but it can also be developed and mastered over time and with practice.

Teamwork is a vital skill to have, especially in university. There are many deadlines for you to meet, there are individual assignments and also group assignments. You need to work closely with your team members for group assignments in order to get your assignments done by the given time. In a group work, you should be very clear with your team members when delegating the workload evenly.

Here are some ways to do so: 1.

Be observant by carefully monitoring any changes in the environment.

2.

You need to have the willingness to learn.

3.

Avoid procrastinating at all costs. By delaying your adjustments, it will be harder for you to adapt to the change.

You need to know your capabilities to give your very best to the team. Listening to your team members and taking their thoughts into consideration is also very important. Commend your group members’ work when they deserve it; this will help them with their confidence too. You will probably have to work as part of a team in many areas of your life, so make the most of your pre-u days to practice your teamwork skills. The better you work with others, the more your team will thrive.

ACING YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT Completing your first assignment in university might seem daunting or even downright terrifying. However, you have nothing to fear as coursesmalaysia has outlined some study tips to help you survive the first assignment of your tertiary education.

Consultation and assistance Once you’ve received your assignment, make sure you read and understand the questions thoroughly before attempting to answer. The best first-step is to discuss with your course mates. This is a great way to exchange ideas and will help you better understand your assignment! It is also the perfect opportunity to interact and gain some new friends. However, if you are still in doubt, look up the lecturer who assigned you the work. Lecturers are often receptive and would be more than willing to assist a student who shows initiative. Identify the sections that you are unclear about in the assignment, and make an appointment (this is a CRUCIAL step) to meet your lecturer. Do not hesitate to approach them out of fear or shyness as you will be the one on the losing end. Another group of people you can turn to for help are your seniors. After all, they have already gone through the problems that you are facing now and survived. Approach them for advice and quick pointers. If needed, borrow their notes and work samples to serve as reference but NEVER attempt to plagiarise or copy their work. Learn, not leech, from them.

Test of time As a freshman in university, you might be tempted to spend your first year exploring the new environment around you, meeting new friends and embracing your newfound independence. However, remember to prioritise, so to not neglect your studies. Most first year students tend to find themselves stumped with a heavy workload during their first semester. This is partly due to them trying to adjust to the new education system, as well as completing the number of subjects or credits they are expected to fulfill. It is very unlikely that you will only have a single assignment for the semester, hence, it would be best if you plan and work ahead of time. A good practice is to allocate sufficient time for each of your assignments. Follow and commit yourself to the schedule you’ve created and avoid starting your assignment only at the eleventh hour! Remember, make sure time is constantly on your side and use it to your advantage.

Research, research, and write!

Citations and references

We cannot stress the importance of conducting research enough. You will need to conduct extensive research to produce a good paper, as copying and rehashing your notes will not be enough. Gone are your spoon-fed days from your school teachers, and regurgitating your notes now will not earn you your much-coveted A grades. But with good and careful research while working on your assignments, you might find that scoring a high grade is not that tenacious after all.

Once you are done with your research and have drafted your paper, you need to focus on including proper citations and references at the end of your paper. In general, a citation is a reference to published or unpublished sources and its purpose is to acknowledge and credit the original source of which the information originated from.

So, where do you start? Your university library would be a good place to kick off your research. Some students prefer the convenience of internet sources compared to a visit to the common library. However, most university libraries are actually decently stocked up with books and academic journals. Adding to that, most universities have subscriptions to digital libraries and online academic journal databases such as JSTOR, Project MUSE and AGRIS.

While some courses at the undergraduate level do not require citations and references, it would be rather impertinent not to give credit where credit is due. In more severe cases, failing to cite properly might lead to your paper being branded as a plagiarised work, which might result in you failing the assignment – or worse, expelled. You can find out more about citations and the various referencing formats such as the MLA and APA style from guidebooks that are available at your university library. The format used may vary depending on your subject and the preference of your tutor or lecturer. As different courses require different citation styles, your lecturer is the best person to consult if you are in doubt.

CHOOSING YOUR ELECTIVES While the core subjects from your courses are pretty much set in stone, the elective courses are a whole different story. To fulfill your required credit hours, there’s a variety of elective courses you can choose from! Nor Atikah Abdul Wahid lists a few ways you can pick and plan your elective options based on your personality type.

The Completionist You know what you want and you want it all. If your chosen degree is your passion, then select elective courses that expand your understanding or introduce an in-depth perspective into your field. For example, choosing an elective course on ‘Gender Perspectives on Health’ while you’re undertaking a Health Sciences degree. You may even discover your niche in your future career. This is the easiest route to take as most unis would offer elective courses related to your field. Moreover, these classes would be held in your department and would have the same instructors as your regular classes. Have a favourite lecturer? Sign up for an elective class with them!

34

coursesmalaysia 2020/21

The Adventurer You think variety is the spice of life and it shows (on your degree transcript)! The Adventurer is the opposite of the Completionist where the structure of a degree could be too rigid for your liking. So, find out the range of elective courses offered to you and let your heart decide. Interested in learning French, World Politics or even Chinese Architecture? Take them all! In recent years, unis even encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and diversify their knowledge. If you are anxious about taking a subject that’s alien to you, have a conversation with the lecturer beforehand or sit in for a session to see if it’s your cup of tea.

The Squad You think there is no “I” in team. Just as the name suggests, The Squad represents a group of people rather than a single individual. While exercising your independence is highly recommended during your uni years, there’s nothing wrong in exploring a shared interest among you and your buddies. After all, learning how to work in a team is a valuable skill. Choose an elective course that involves a lot of group work such as event planning or even a team sport such as volleyball. While having supportive friends can help you with first time jitters, working in a team also enables you to take on more substantial projects –like running a theatre play.

CAMPUS COMPASS Campus Survival Guide

The Strategist You like things to be simple and organised. If you find the multiple choices of elective courses as troublesome rather than exciting, then opting for The Strategist is the way to go. The Strategist is only interested in elective options that do not require too much energy or time away from their main studies. Worried about demanding lecturers or heavy workload? Ask your seniors about their experiences with those classes! You can also choose an elective class that is held during the weekends so you can have more breathing space during the weekdays. Some unis even offer elective classes online so this would be a great option especially if you are living off campus.

Whether you are The Completionist, The Adventurer, The Squad or The Strategist, remember that the choice is in your hands. In fact, switch it up from semester to semester—go for The Strategist approach if you feel you would be swamped with assignments or do The Adventurer whenever you’re bored with a particular semester. You see, planning your studies doesn’t have to be boring!

A LEVELS

Advanced Level General Certificate of Education

Introduction

The A levels was first introduced in 1951 as a standard requirement for entry into universities in the UK. It is also known as GCE Advanced Level. Over the years it has become a globally recognised pre-university qualification. In Malaysia, A levels courses are offered by private universities. If you decide to undergo the programme, you have the option to take a minimum of 3 subjects out of a total of 60 subjects. With technically no limit to the number of subjects you can take, it is easy to get overwhelmed but remember that most universities only require a minimum of 3 subjects for entry.

Duration The duration of an A levels course can be anywhere between 15 months to 24 months. This depends on your institution.

Structure & Assessment

The A levels is a 100% exam-based programme that is further broken down into 2 parts – starting with the Advanced Subsidiary (AS level) which forms the foundation of A levels.

This is followed by the A2 level which is the second, more complex part of the A levels syllabus. There are major exams at the end of each level. In a nutshell, 50% of your total scores come from your AS level, while the remaining 50% comes from your A2 level.

Intakes There are multiple intakes for the A levels course each year, depending on the college or university of your choice. Most private institutions typically offer intakes in January, March, July and/or September.

ADP

American Degree Programme

Introduction

As its name suggests, the ADP is a degree course in its own right. Don’t worry if this seems confusing. Just remember that unlike other pre-university courses such as A levels, AUSMAT, SAM or STPM, the ADP gives you the benefit of a direct entry into university right after SPM or O levels.

Duration As the ADP is a degree programme, the duration of the course is 4 years.

Intakes There are multiple intakes for the ADP course each year, depending on the college or university of your choice. Most private institutions typically offer intakes in January, July and/or August.

Structure & Assessment

The basic structure of the ADP follows a 2+2 format: • Year 1 & Year 2 (General and Core courses amounting to an average of 60 credits) • Year 3 & Year 4 (Major courses amounting to an average of 60 credits) As an ADP student you will have to attain roughly 110 to 140 credits to graduate from the course. The ADP features a grading system which is based on the commonly used cumulative grade point average (CGPA) system, where each subject is graded from 0 (fail) to 4.0 (distinction). You will need to perform consistently throughout the duration of the course to maintain a good CGPA. You should also be aware of the credit hour accumulation system which assigns a certain number of credit hours (sometimes simply referred to as ‘credits’) to each subject. You will acquire the credit hours as and when you pass the subjects you take.

AUSMAT Australian Matriculation

Introduction

The Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) pre-university course is offered in Malaysia by several private colleges. It is largely identical to the Year 12 curriculum utilised in Western Australian secondary schools and is one of the most popular pre-university courses. Students who complete the AUSMAT are awarded the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). The AUSMAT qualification is equivalent to the Malaysian STPM and A levels qualifications.

Duration AUSMAT typically takes anywhere between 10 months to 12 months to complete.

Intakes There are several intakes for AUSMAT each year, depending on the institution offering the course and the length of the course. Most private universities in Malaysia typically offer 2 to 3 intakes for AUSMAT courses, which generally fall in January, March, July and/or September.

Structure & Assessment

The AUSMAT is administered by the Western Australian government. That may sound scary at first, but you can take comfort in the fact that the course has a well-balanced emphasis on 50% exams and 50% coursework which takes away the scary big exam at the end of your studies. Another interesting aspect of the AUSMAT is that it is a holistic approach to a pre university qualification. Expect to learn independently and at your own pace, while being assessed continuously throughout the duration of the course via homework such as: • research-based assignments • lab reports • topic tests • short essays • weekly quizzes You will be graded by a score called the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The ATAR is calculated based on students’ results when they complete their respective courses.

Canadian Pre-University

Introduction

The first thing you should know about the Canadian Pre-University (CPU) is that colleges and universities offer 2 types of courses namely: • International Canadian Pre-University (ICPU) • Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) Secondly, you should know that whichever CPU course you take, you will be given the same qualification: the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) which is awarded to Canadian students who successfully complete the 12th grade (or final year) of high school.

Duration The duration of a CPU (either ICPU or CIMP) is anywhere between 12 months to 15 months long.

Intakes

Structure & Assessment

Different from other pre-university courses, the CPU has a 70% coursework and 30% final exams weightage. You will be graded on the individual subjects you take, as well as on your projects, lab work and other assignments. On top of the grades given to you via your coursework and final exams, all CPU students are required to complete the following: • Ontario School Secondary Literacy Test (OSSLT) • Community Service (based on a number of approved hours)

There are multiple intakes for the CPU courses each year, depending on the college or university of your choice. Most private institutions typically offer intakes in January, March, July and/or September.

DIPLOMA Introduction

A diploma programme is the step before a degree programme. Most – if not all – diploma programmes are aimed at accelerating students’ understanding of hands-on and practical training as well as skills, which are crucial for certain jobs. Thus, diploma programmes are usually focused on specific areas of work such as teaching, linguistics, graphic design, culinary arts or computer science.

Duration It takes anywhere from 24 months to 36 months to complete a diploma programme.

Intakes

Structure & Assessment

The overall structure and assessment of diploma programmes depend on the university offering the course. However, students should be prepared for both coursework and final exams. The diploma programme is a route worth considering for students who have obtained less than 5 credits in their SPM. With funding widely available (including the PTPTN loan), this is a viable pre-u programme for many.

The intake for this programme purely depends on your institution of choice.

FOUNDATION Introduction

While exploring pre-u programmes, students are bound to come across foundation courses. Such courses are aplenty and they prepare students for the next step in their tertiary education: the bachelor’s degree programme. Foundation courses are generally seen as preparatory courses that help students develop the right learning skills and acquire crucial knowledge before stepping into a degree programme.

Duration The duration of a foundation course is approximately 12 months.

Intakes

Structure & Assessment

Each foundation course is assessed by the university itself, unlike a central body (A levels, International Baccalaureate, etc.). This means that every foundation programme differs from one another. However, two common threads exist: a) all foundation courses offer a combination of core and elective subjects b) all foundation courses take approximately 12 months to complete It is best to check with university representatives on the types of foundation programmes offered, on top of any scholarships or funding offered.

There are three intakes in a year with the entry requirements being SPM, UEC or GCE O level or similar qualification.

IB

International Baccalaureate

Introduction

The International Baccalaureate (or International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) is a pre-university course that is often confused for a regular diploma programme. However, they are very different courses. While the International Baccalaureate is a pre-university course comparable to AUSMAT or A levels, it is not a diploma programme. Students who successfully complete the International Baccalaureate will be required to enter the first year of a degree programme. The International Baccalaureate is administered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Duration The duration of an International Baccalaureate course is around 24 months.

Intakes

Structure & Assessment

In this course, you need to take six subjects. You will have to choose three subjects of the Higher Level (HL) and three of the Standard Level (SL). For each subject, students receive grades ranging from 1 to 7, with 7 being highest. A student’s final result is made up of the combined scores for each subject. The diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, abiding to certain minimum levels of performance including successful completion of the 3 essential elements of the DP core, which are the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Action, Service (CAS). The TOK and EE components are awarded with individual grades and, collectively, can contribute up to 3 additional points towards the overall diploma score. However, CAS does not contribute to the points total but its authenticated participation is a requirement for the award. Source: International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO)

MATRIKULASI Malaysian Matriculation Programme

Introduction

The Malaysian Matriculation Programme (commonly referred to as Matrikulasi) is a popular route into university. As a pre-university programme in its own right, the Malaysian Matriculation Programme is a hot ticket because it only requires a registration fee of RM255 – the rest is fully sponsored by the Malaysian government.

Duration There are 2 types of Matriculation programmes: • 1-Year Programme* (Takes place over 2 semesters) * Offered to both Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera students. • 2-Year Programme** (Takes place over 4 semesters) ** Offered to Bumiputera students only. Approximately 10% of places within the Malaysian Matriculation Programme are offered to non-Bumiputera students.

Intakes The intake for the 1-Year Programme (Program Satu Tahun or PST) is in April of each year, whereas the intake for the 2-Year Programme (Program Dua Tahun or PDT) is in May.

Structure & Assessment

All in all, there are 3 streams for students to choose from: • Accounting stream • Science stream • Technical stream

While all streams are available to students who have enrolled in the 1-Year Programme, only Science stream students can enrol in the 2-Year Programme, which utilises the same syllabus offered in the 1-Year Programme. The difference is that students in the 2-Year Programme will be taught the syllabus over the course of 2 years. Students are required to take several compulsory subjects along with their stream’s core subjects which total up to 8 subjects. Similar to many universities, Matrikulasi uses Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as their grading system. Students are assessed via endof-semester exams.

DEGREE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH HONOURS (GENETICS)

STUDENT:

Siti Anis Natasya Binti Ahmad Tarmizee, 21

How did you know this study field is for you?

Back then, I decided to further my study in this field because there’s certain field that I’m good at and for another I might need to push myself just to absorb everything. Maybe in one perspective I’m going to look like a person who fear stepping out of my own comfort zone but seeking joy while studying is not a sin right? I knew that I do better in science or to be exact biological science. So here I am, a genetic student.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you and your studies?

This pandemic, to be honest, it does not affect me much. I’m originally introvert and I rarely spent my time beyond my territory which is my room if I were in college and my house in my hometown. It does affect a little bit on my study. We can’t stay in campus which is not really a bad thing. Yet still, few things here and there will be lacking. For instances, accessibility somehow disrupted. No faceto-face discussions which require us more effort if we are to seek similar result of information gained from it.

What encouraged you to continue with your studies despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

I’m grateful that in this pandemic, I was not pushed over the edge to the point that I need to choose between quitting my studies or continuing it. Alhamdullilah, my family are all doing just fine. We face no crisis so basically there’s no solid reason for me to give up on it.

What are your plans after graduating?

I have no exact aim for the time being. Still trying to figure out things related to this. But I do have a few in mind. I might go for genetic counselor, or further my studies in forensic and work in that field. Might also broaden my family businesses. My family had always wish for me to do so and I’m willingly considering it.

What new teaching methods were introduced by your institution as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

For UKM, they took initiative with online learning. In my case, commonly we use UKM Folio, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet as our platforms. UKM was quite quick on making decisions for students learning method as we were informed earlier that online learning will be carried out through the remaining of 2020. coursesmalaysia 2020/21

DIPLOMA DIPLOMA IN ANIMATION

STUDENT: Chan Zi Qi, 19

Why did you choose to study A-Levels/ Foundation/Diploma/Matriculation?

One of the main reasons I choose to do my Animation diploma at the college is because of the high employability and market demand as proven by the programme’s graduates which are my seniors. I can immediately jump start my career with sufficient knowledge and skill sets upon completing the programme without having to obtain a degree – which is a faster and more cost-savvy route to what I wish to achieve in the animation and film VFX industry.

How did you decide on your course?

I like to watch movies, anime and I enjoy watching the computer graphics (CG) in gaming videos, and so I decided to pursue the programme based on my interests, with the support from my family. The great thing about the programme is I can also pick-up subjects related to other art disciplines. The course offers a wide range of career options, and it is a budding and promising industry in Malaysia.

How was your institution affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

The pandemic has caused months of lockdown for learning institutions and alas, our college is not excluded. Our lessons are on-going as usual but for safety purpose, classes are conducted via online learning. It is regretful that meetings, discussions, and club events cannot be conducted face-to-face in the campus. 60

coursesmalaysia 2020/21

How did you manage to study for your diploma despite the COVID-19 pandemic? I am glad that most of my current subjects in the programme can be learned at home via online learning. I only need to prepare a webcam and it is good enough for my studies during the pandemic.

What made you decide to continue your diploma studies during the COVID-19 pandemic? It is a difficult time indeed for Malaysians, but this is a course that I have interest and passion in. If nothing major happens, I will continue my studies and finish what I have already started. During this pandemic, I also learned new skills and knowledge which is an interesting experience.

SOLE Digital Art, 2020 Sole is a gifted witch who dreams of becoming a pâtissier. She loves making desserts and pastries like mille crepe with her cute magical assistants. Due to lessons being disrupted by the pandemic and tight assignment submission deadlines, I knew it will be tough as I raced against time to complete my works. To motivate myself, I have added my favorite thing – dessert, into the art piece although admittedly it did make me feel hungry as I worked on it during the night.

REIN Digital Art, 2020 Rein, a witch, together with her cat Nini have always been attracted to exploring and casting magical spells especially round midnight. Why did you choose to study A-Levels/ Foundation/Diploma/Matriculation?

After much thoughts, I decided to enrol in a Foundation course. I chose Foundation because it provides a quick path to an undergraduate programme as compared with A-Levels or Diploma. Additionally, the curriculum involves 50% examinations and 50% coursework which is a wellbalanced syllabus, especially since I enjoy coursework.

Being a person who finds interest in areas like communication, business and leadership Foundation in Arts was an easy choice and one that I don’t regret. The wide variety of subject caught my attention as I always seek to learn new things and develop new skills. I then knew that I would thrive in this course.

How was your institution affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

As a September 2020 intake student during the RMCO, I had the privilege of commencing my classes on campus! This was a great opportunity to connect with people and see new faces even if they were half-covered by a mask. The camaraderie was forged and memories made during the short three weeks of physical classes before everyone was abruptly scattered into cyberspace due to reimposed lockdowns.

How did you manage to study for your pre-u despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

I’ve learned to adapt and persevere despite the situation. Yes, online classes are challenging. Everyone seemed disconnected and distant. However, as online studies continued, I began to realise that there are significant benefits of studying from home. First off, without needing to travel to and fro to college and being at home throughout the day, I had ample time to complete my assignments. The situation forced me to be focused on my work and commitments.

What made you decide to continue your pre-u studies during the COVID-19 pandemic?

I was determined to not let the pandemic hinder me from achieving my best in my pursuits and education. Indeed, the pandemic hurls many undesirable circumstances that threaten to dampen our spirits, and these circumstances are out of our control, but we can decide how to respond to the pandemic. Instead of wallowing in the unfortunate circumstance, I remained resolute to make the most out of my time in college. I chose to respond in perseverance in my pre-u studies through the difficulties of virtual learning.

DEGREE BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGY (HONS)

STUDENT:

Chen Tyng Xin, Emily, 21

How did you know this study field is for you?

As an observant person, I enjoy finding the “whys”, “hows” and “whats” of the environment around me, especially in terms of human interaction. I wish to utilise what I have learned from the Psychology degree programme to make an impact on society by providing more useful and beneficial resources to raise awareness in the mental health field.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you and your studies? I was having a hard time absorbing what I have learned online due to the distractions around me. However, as time progresses, it slowly came to my realisation that getting a constant update from lecturers as well as friends is vital to help me survive in this stressful situation. Also, time management is the key to success during this tough time.

What encouraged you to continue with your studies despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

My initial determination and passion for psychology. Although it is tough to endure such circumstances, as long as I hold on to that initial passion I have towards psychology and constantly remind myself of the reasons as to why I took up this challenge, everything will eventually seem worthwhile after all.

What are your plans after graduating?

Upon graduating with my degree, I wish to venture into the field of child psychology. I aim to devote my attention to assess, research and assist the special needs children population. After several years of experience in the relevant field, I will continue to pursue my studies in the Master of Clinical Psychology programme so that to boost my qualification.

What new teaching methods were introduced by your institution as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

HELP University had introduced pre-recorded slides and online live classes via Zoom and Microsoft Teams to accommodate to the new norm. Also, online consultation hours are made available by the lecturers so that students can drop by during the session to clarify any doubts regarding assignments or lecture contents. coursesmalaysia 2020/21

DI PLOMA DIPLÔME DE CUISINE

Why did you choose to study diploma in Le Cordon Bleu?

Le Cordon Bleu is one of the most esteemed culinary academies in the world and after finding out that there is an institute in Malaysia located much closer to my home in Kuching, Sarawak, it was a match made in heaven. I didn’t have to travel to other countries to be able to experience being taught from some of the best chefs in the industry.

How did you decide on your course?

I was passionate about cooking from a young age and truly delighted when something I cooked appeals to those whom I serve. Le Cordon Bleu has always been at the back of my mind when I started having a serious interest in professional culinary arts. I chose the Diplôme in Cuisine to learn classic French techniques which are extremely important foundation for chefs who want to perfect their culinary skills.

How was your institution affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Le Cordon Bleu’s courses are very practical-oriented, so many of our classes were rescheduled when the October lockdown was announced. Now, we are being taught theory classes and live demos through Microsoft Teams. The chefs are very supportive and always encourage us to continue cooking at home to practice.

How did you manage to study for your diploma program despite the COVID-19 pandemic? The most helpful thing I found was to have a change of environment. I can barely get things done staying in my dorm all day, so I try to be in a conducive setting when I’m studying. Being in a library or reading room just gets me in the zone to finish my tasks. The Internet is the biggest source of information out there, and being more of a visual learner, I find that I can efficiently absorb material from YouTube videos. I take notes while watching these videos as well so I can remember the material long-term.

What made you decide to continue your diploma program studies during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Honestly, I thought it was over and I could start my course like normal. However, this isn’t my first time going through a pandemic during my studies, so I just decided to go ahead with it instead of wasting time at home.

How did you manage to study for your diploma program despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

How did you decide on your course?

What made you decide to continue your diploma program studies during the COVID-19 pandemic?

As we know, diplomas focused on practical and industryspecific skills and knowledge to train us for the working world. As I choose to pursue a career in culinary arts, it requires more practical skills rather than academic knowledge. Therefore, diploma is the best option for me. After completed my secondary school, I felt quite lost in life. One day, I watched a video of Chef Amaury Guichon making chocolate sculptures and desserts. His elegance and creativity in making the sculpture and desserts amazed me. I started to gather more information about him, and I came across with one of his quotes “You might not be the next superstar, but nobody needs to be a superstar; you just need to be happy in your life and find what gets you there.” At that moment, I made up my mind that I wanted to be a pastry chef.

How was your institution affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Although not being on campus, I am still able to study by making different desserts at home. I have done many research and find the best way to make each dessert. Through this learning method, I get to be more prepared before I go back to the campus.

It has been a frustrating time for me because it was my first year in university where I was looking forward to gain experience of the changes from high school to university and now we need to stay at home. However, my dream must continue, despite the pandemic. As I just graduated from secondary school, I have nothing to do for now, so I should not waste the time by doing nothing during the pandemic situation.

Due to the nationwide lockdown imposed by the government, Le Cordon Bleu have changed our theory classes to online classes instead to comply with Ministry of Health (MOH) SOP. Other than our own online classes, Le Cordon Bleu also offered us the opportunity to attend the online classes that scheduled for other culinary disciplines to keep us occupied. From the extra online classes, I got the opportunity to gain extra knowledge. coursesmalaysia 2020/21

CARRÉ D’AGNEAU RÔTI AU THYM ET ROMARIN Cooking dish, 2020 This was the first lamb dish that i’ve prepared during basic cuisine class and I enjoyed cooking it. The most challenging for me was to manchonner the lamb racks in time. The sides for the lamb rack was the traditional ratatouille. Both recipes match well together.

FILET DE MAQUEREAUX, WITH TAPENADE AND TOMATO FONDUE TART Cooking dish, 2019 This was my starter plate for my final exam; a mackerel on top of a tapenade tart. The tart had a Japanese twist where I marinated it in soy sauce, lemon juice and finished off with the blow torched to give the mackerel a charred flavour. I also chose to put salmon roe just to give colour and the connection with seafood. I’ve also used the chlorophyll oil spontaneously to create the design on the plate.

TARTE AUX FRUITS ROUGES ET MOUSSE AMANDE 2020

GÂTEAU DE MARIAGE 2020 When we’re given the assignment to make our own version of wedding cake, I’ve decided on having a simple yet elegant theme and thus, this cake was created. As this was the first time we’re using rolled fondant, it was a struggle to get used to the texture and to mold the flowers so that they look as ethereal as possible. This was definitely a challenge but I’m really proud of the outcome!

For this tart, I’ve learned some new things like making whipped ganache and a new piping technique. I’ve also learned the importance of the components placement to enhance its aesthetic appeal. Getting used to the new piping technique was definitely the challenge in making this tart.

What made you decide to continue your pre-u studies during the COVID-19 pandemic?

I heard a lot of positive feedbacks from my friends and seniors who studied in MSU. So, I decided to visit MSU on the info day. I knew instantly that this is the place that I would like to further my studies. I love how the employees and students are helpful and carry themselves with such confidence, the countless facilities (love that it has Starbucks, definitely my main go-to from now) and the building is exceedingly beautiful and huge. Well, it wasn’t really hard for me as I always wanted to do Psychology. So, the most suitable option in MSU was Foundation in TESL and I would be doing a degree in Psychology. I’m really happy to be doing foundation in TESL as this will help me to be skilled in my language and writing which will help in my report in Psychology.

How was your institution affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

It was extremely hard at first as all the club activities and physical classes were cancelled. Everyone was so confused of how class and club activities were going to be carried out but thank goodness MSU planned it all well. Students had clear instructions of how online class and club activities would be held online. It’s still really fun.

It was definitely difficult trying to adapt to online classes. I was upset as I couldn’t meet all the friends and lecturers that I just met when I started classes. Plus, once I got used to it, I started looking on the bright side of online class and is now giving my absolute best in all my classes.

I decide to continue my studies in MSU during pandemic because I enjoy hanging out with the new friends I made, the interesting classes and the relationships that have been built with my lecturers and classmates. I think I wouldn’t want to trade for anything else then this. I’m really happy to pursue my studies in MSU. I know it’s going to be a fun year regardless!

Why did you choose to study A-Levels/ Foundation/Diploma/Matriculation?

While searching for a foundation programme in Malaysia, I came across a plethora of universities but MSU was the one that caught my eyes. They had offered the exact programme that I wanted, and they have noticeably more facilities compared to other universities. Furthermore, MSU also has extremely qualified teachers who could make outstanding students. Then, I decided to visit MSU and the atmosphere over there was stellar. MSU is a melting pot of cultures, all around Malaysia and different parts of the world as well. After taking all these factors into account, MSU was the best choice.

How did you decide on your course?

Since I was a child, I have always had a soft spot for people in need, especially for people who don’t have enough money for proper treatment. So, I decided to become a doctor to help these people in need. Along with this, I have also always been fascinated and intrigued by the human body. Human anatomy has always had a special place in my heart.

How was your institution affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

MSU was able to carry out online classes as smoothly as possible. Lecturers used apps like WebEx and Zoom to conduct classes. This aid into making our learning attentive and comprehensive. Other websites were

introduced as well such as websites like Edmodo, Google Classroom and Kahoot to give us tasks and make classes interesting and the lecturers are always willing to help as they are only a few taps on our screen away. In conclusion, MSU was able to ensure our learning was conducive and beneficial.

How did you manage to study for your pre-u despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

Despite adapting to online classes, I persevered through this pandemic to ensure my studies were not affected. So, I followed three rules. Firstly, I learned to manage my time. I set a daily timetable to keep me on track with my revision and mentally prepared for my studies. The next major issue almost everyone faces is distractions. I learned to deal with this by always isolating myself from my phone and others while studying which was very effective. Lastly, I should always exploit and use resources, whether my teacher or online websites to always ensure I’m on the right path.

What made you decide to continue your pre-u studies during the COVID-19 pandemic?

I decided to buckle down and work twice as hard to achieve my goals. Moreover, patience is an important virtue as, during this time, it will be crucial for us in searching for help and resources. How did you know this study field is for you?

I gained a tremendous amount of interest towards the healthcare industry due to influence from TV shows. Since then, I wondered how a small pill can cure a disease and my passion for working in healthcare industry has skyrocketed. When I finished my foundation programme, I spent a year working in a community pharmacy as an assistant pharmacist to experience what is it like to work in healthcare industry and I loved it. Without any hesitation, I did my research about the course and enrolled myself into Bachelor of Pharmacy.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you and your studies? For me, the pandemic did not really affect me and my studies that much. However, I do miss attending physical classes. This is because I have set goals for myself since I started my journey as a pharmacy student which is to obtain a first class honour certificate and also to be a successful pharmacist one day. Therefore, whenever I felt lost or felt like giving up, I always remind myself about my goals to keep me going.

What new teaching methods were introduced by your institution as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic? and attentive while making sure that there is sufficient space for students to think outside the box. Examples which perfectly demonstrate this include sessions like high order thinking-based teaching, activity teaching, and case-based or problem-based learning. I am very well aware that this is a difficult time for everyone including both students and lecturer. Hence, I really appreciate any efforts which aid our learning process in any way especially by dedicated lecturers.

What encouraged you to continue with your studies despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

As always, my dreams and goals are what drive me to keep going. However, the whole country witnessed the struggle and shortage of healthcare frontliners during the pandemic. This crisis motivates me to study even harder to be part of the healthcare frontliners one day to fight against diseases and serve our country.

What are your plans after graduating?

Pharmacy degree opens up many career opportunities which allows us to work in public and private healthcare sectors or we can even operate our own pharmacy. After my graduation, I plan to complete my Provisionally Registered Pharmacist (PRP) and work in the public sector to learn and gain experience. With the experience and money gained, I plan to pursue my Masters and Doctorate in Pharmacy and eventually owning my own pharmacy. Last but not least, I also aspire to be a lecturer to develop and nurture future pharmacists or healthcare providers.

STRANGER BODIES Collage Painting, 2020

CLASSROOM BOREDOM Digital Painting, 2020 Roy Lichtenstein, a famous comic artist was the inspiration for this artwork. This artwork is conveying how “The Artist” is going mad in a boring classroom. When a learning process is engaging and fun, students are more willing to participate and take risks. Students also retain information better as it is enjoyable and memorable. The Artist also knows that there’s no elevator to success, thus the buildings in the background signify how gaining knowledge is perpetual to the development of one’s skills and personal growth.

This artwork was inspired by two main subjects that speak strongly to me. The first one was Eleven from Netflix’s Stranger Things – a story about a girl with superpower who arrived at a town and ended up saving them from a supernatural villain. The next one was Winnie Harlow, an American supermodel who has rare skin condition called Vitiligo. This artwork is to send a message to the audience that beauty imperfection is perfection, and they should normalise it in their daily lives for self-empowerment. Uniqueness is something that we should celebrate, not bully.

Why did you choose to study A-Levels/ Foundation/Diploma/Matriculation?

Knowing that I wanted to pursue the creative field, I felt that a Diploma programme would be more suitable as it could help me build my portfolio. I also liked that my institution gave us (the diploma students) the flexibility to switch majors during the second semester. As I was still uncertain about my major at that time, it was more of a safer route for me.

How did you decide on your course?

Initially I wanted to major in Animation like my cousin, my parents encouraged me to take on the same path as he was doing pretty well. Due to my uncertainty however, I didn’t want to major in something so specific. I liked that digital media design covers a variety of different media, which was exactly what I needed as I wanted to keep my options open.

In terms of learning, our classes are now conducted online via Microsoft teams, which we already had our accounts set up prior to the pandemic. How did you manage to study for your diploma despite the COVID-19 pandemic? Not going to lie, it gets challenging on days when I need a face-to-face consultation or hands-on guidance from my lecturers. It definitely forces me to be more independent and plan ahead because of how uncertain the pandemic can be. Keeping in touch with my classmates and checking up on each other has really helped me, it feels really comforting knowing that we’re not dealing with this alone.

To be fair, I am two semesters away from graduating and giving up at this point isn’t really an option. Regardless of how challenging the situation might be, the world doesn’t stop for anyone. How did you know this study field is for you? I believe my relatively early exposure to digital photo manipulation has played a huge part in my decision to jump right into this study field. This study field not only provides me the skills I need, it also gives me the skills that will actually land me a job in the digital media industry.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you and your studies? The COVID-19 pandemic has done horrible things to me and the people around me. I would be lying if I said it didn’t affect my level of productivity at all. There’s just something dangerously comfortable about studying and attending classes at home, but it is also important to know that as devastating as this situation is for us, life goes on. I overcame my procrastination problems by acknowledging that procrastination is not a part of who I am, but an annoying monkey jumping around in my head that I absolutely have to get rid of, haha.

What new teaching methods were introduced by your institution as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

What encouraged you to continue with your studies despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

Why give up just because of a single inconvenience? Unless there are severe monetary issues in the family, I don’t see how the pandemic should stop students from continuing their studies online. In my personal opinion, the advances in communication technology is already sufficient for us to counter this pandemic, so if money or even mental health is not a big problem for someone, I would suggest them to carry on. I know I did, and in my experience — it wasn’t so bad.

What are your plans after graduating?

The many things I have learned from my study field have given me a wide range of job opportunities in the digital media industry. In fact, there are so many things we can do with this degree, that almost every classmate of mine seems to have a unique career choice in mind. Personally, I am interested in a number of things, such as frontend development, UI/UX design and even advertising. Although I’d like a career opportunity that allows me to dabble in all those job roles, I look forward to working as a UI/UX designer first as a short-term goal.

We did a lot of our classes on Microsoft Teams instead! Besides, now that we can get in touch with any lecturer through the private messaging feature, I can just send my questions to them at any time, and then get a reply when it’s convenient for them. The new system, in my opinion, is a welcomed improvement.

FLOATING MARKET Photoshop, 2019 I came up with an idea to make a Middle Eastern market concept, but I felt it wouldn’t be special enough if it was just a normal market. So I decided to combine the floating market idea to my environmental concept design. Since this was a photo bash project, the challenge I faced was the process of searching hundreds of pictures and combining all of it to become a bigger picture. So it did feel like trying to solve a complicated puzzle. But after placing everything, I also learnt that some complicated parts needed to be simplified and some important parts needed to pop out.

TILULU Photoshop, 2019 These are the characters that I made for a basic concept design. My inspiration came from Disney’s Coco, of which the theme is afterlife. The story behind these characters is about Lulu who loves to play the horn instrument. Unfortunately, in her journey, Lulu is hypnotised by a creature named Kola until she realises she is brought into the spirit world and tries to escape. The development of this project was heavily influenced by African ethnic and culture that I tried to visualise from the characters. I was intrigued to further develop the characters until I found it to be quite challenging when making the overall character personality cheerful yet still maintaining the mystery. Another challenging part was how I shaped the silhouette of the characters to make it more interesting and fit into the same style.

How did you manage to study for your pre-u despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

When online learning was implemented, I was quite daunted by it as it was something completely new and foreign to many students and lecturers. I was worried that it would affect my academic performance as well as the technical problems which might occur during online learning. Fortunately, my lecturers were very patient in guiding me and my classmates and ensuring that we fully understood the topic before moving forward. Recorded lectures were also available for us to refer to. With this, I was also able to use my free time to do more revision through online learning to better understand the subject.

People often say that difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Everything was shifted online when MCO was announced to curb the spread of Covid-19. Technically I was still “connected” to my friends and lecturers online but it lacked the human touch. We had to find new ways to communicate with each other and make the best of this new normal.

TAR UC utilised the tools in Google Suite such as Google Classroom and Google Hangouts to conduct online classes. The best feature for me was that lecturers could upload recorded lectures for students and we could refer back to it during our revision.

DEGREE BACHELOR DEGREE OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN BIOSCIENCE WITH CHEMISTRY

STUDENT:

Leong Seng Yi, 20

How did you know this study field is for you?

I am an observant and curious person by nature. I have always admired the beauty of nature and wondered about what secrets it holds. This curiosity is what prompted me to pursue the field of Biology and Chemistry as it gives me the opportunity to discover and understand Earth and nature.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you and your studies? I was not able to attend practical sessions in the lab which was frustrating as practical work is an important component of my programme. Face-to-face communication and socialising among lecturers and students became difficult amidst the pandemic and lessons were shifted online. Fortunately, there are online resources available to help me with my studies but they are still insufficient.

What new teaching methods were introduced by your institution as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

TAR UC implemented online learning through platforms such as Google Classroom and Google Meet. Learning materials were distributed online and lecturers conducted their lectures on live stream as they would in a normal classroom setting. Recorded lectures were also available to ease our revision. Other platforms such as Jamboard, email and Whatsapp were used to increase 80

coursesmalaysia 2020/21

student-lecturer interactions and convey messages. Our practical sessions were conducted online where lecturers made use of resources to make the discussions more interactive.

What encouraged you to continue with your studies despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

I chose to continue my studies as it would be better than just staying at home doing nothing. I was fortunate enough to have my laptop and fairly good internet connection which allowed me to attend lessons online. Plus, TAR UC’s online library provided students access to extra resources. I am also grateful to TAR UC for providing meals to students living in the surrounding areas who were stranded during MCO.

What are your plans after graduating?

As of now, I am interested in research in the medical field or microbiological field as I hope that I can develop a drug or vaccine which can cure diseases. Once I have graduated, I plan to enter the pharmaceutical industry for a few years to gain experience. After that, I might pursue a postgraduate degree or I may just stay in the workforce.

INSTITUTION HUB Student Life

DEGREE BACHELOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS (HONS)

STUDENT:

Michelle Lim Ke Wei, 23

How did you know this study field is for you?

I think the reason I decided to pursue a degree in Public Relations is mainly because there is a wide range of work opportunities available in the market. I also needed to improve my confidence and self-esteem, I thought that this course would enable me to express myself better. Apart from that, it is about social media/digital media, something that I have always been interested in because of the power and influence that it has.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you and your studies? The pandemic affected me mentally and emotionally. It was really hard because I spent most of my time in my room. It has affected the way I approach my studies since I am most of the time at home. Hence, I really struggled with time management. I needed to discipline myself in prioritising my work and not procrastinate.

What new teaching methods were introduced by your institution as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

TAR UC utilises Google Meet, Google Hangout, Google Classroom and Google Form for all of the classes. The communication between lecturers, tutors and students is seamless even though everything is done online.

What encouraged you to continue with your studies despite the COVID-19 pandemic?

I would say it is to ‘survive’. I know a lot of people are affected during this pandemic. They lose their job and are unable to pursue their education. I am lucky to still have the opportunity to continue my studies and I believe the word ‘survive’ encourages me to keep going. At this point of time, I think many people in the world are fighting for survival. I am already in my final year of studies and if I were to stop, it will affect my future employment.

What are your plans after graduating?

Social media has always been my interest and it will definitely be a big part of what I want to pursue in the future. There are endless possibilities of what it can do. I want to venture into social media marketing in the hospitality industry. I have always been interested in hospitality. Hence, I have applied to be an intern at a hotel under the social media department. I am also starting my own YouTube channel soon because of the interest I have in filming and editing and I hope to have it as my part-time job in the future.

The college takes pride in its 25 years of academic and creative excellence in producing artists and designers well sought after in Malaysia and overseas. UOW Malaysia KDU is part of the University of Wollongong Australia’s global network, but has a long history of providing accessible, quality, tertiary education to Malaysia, and the surrounding regions, as KDU college and university colleges. Established in 1983, KDU was Malaysia’s first purpose-built private college that provided opportunities for Malaysian youth to pursue high-quality overseas tertiary education in a local setting. Riding on the success of the Damansara Jaya campus, a second campus in Penang was established in 1991. In August 2010, KDU College Damansara Jaya was upgraded to University College status – a reflection of its quality programs, excellent teaching facilities, and strong industry partnerships. KDU University College then moved to its new flagship campus at Utropolis Glenmarie in January 2015. Also in 2015, KDU College Penang was upgraded to University College status. Both university colleges offer a full spectrum of programs, within a contemporary learning environment utilizing state-of-the-art facilities, from Foundation through to bachelor degrees and postgraduate programs. These include programs in

hospitality, tourism and culinary arts, game development and computing, communications, creative arts, business, engineering and nursing.

We at Wall Garden International Academy believed that youth are the key to the future talent market. We developed a program named YES which help uncover and nuture the hidden youth talent. We initially started with a skill profession training that help develop youth aged 16 and above that are not academically proficient. As YES program received more and more recognition and endorsement from influential professional bodies, we begin to expand beyond our existing coverage to cover undergraduates and working adults who wish to seek for a path switch in their

career life. With collaboration inked with renowned both local and universities abroad, we are now able to offer high quality courses and training programmes to improve skills and career development of working youth. These programmes can even customised to meet the continuous development trend in the professional field as the industry is moving forward towards the IR 4.0.
