DURATION Loud Sunsets lasts approximately eight minutes. (Give or take.)
PROGRAM NOTES The sunsets in North Carolina are different from the ones that I grew up with in Boston. Even here in Durham, one of the largest cities in the state, tall buildings are few and far between. As I drive home everyday on highway 15-501, when afternoon slowly turns into dusk, the sun settles calmly against an expansive sky. The colors are bright, herds of clouds make their way across the horizon, and the city’s steady turn towards evening has always commanded this commuter’s attention. Loud Sunsets was written in 2007 for the Boston University Concert Band, Chris Parks, director, commissioned by the Theta Beta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. I’d like to especially thank the brothers of Theta Beta for making this project possible. - George Lam
ABOUT THE COMPOSER George Lam lives and works in Durham, North Carolina, where he is pursuing a Ph.D. in composition at Duke University. George has recently collaborated on projects with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Hong Kong Voices, Volti, American Opera Projects, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet, the Boston University Concert Band, Duke University Theater Studies, baritone Robert Maril, and writers Benjamin Rogers, Lap Lam, Martin Zimmerman and John Clum. George is especially interested in writing music for the theater, and is currently working on a new documentary opera that looks at the changing face of Durham through its buildings, on a libretto created with playwright Neal Bell. George is the director of the Duke New Music Ensemble, and a founding co-artistic director of Rhymes With Opera, a new opera company dedicated to bringing new works of music-theater into unconventional spaces. For more information about George’s music, and to hear recordings of recent works, please visit http://www.gtlam.com.
PERFORMANCE NOTES -
For the percussion, instrument indications are provided as boxed texts, mallet indications are enclosed in parentheses.
-
The use of mutes starting at bar 137: o Trombones should use a bucket mute when at all possible. If it is not available, please substitute with a cup mute. Only use a straight mute when neither the bucket or cup mute is available. o In the passages indicated with a bracket, if there are multiple players on each part, change from senza sord. to con sord. individually, gradually changing from only one person playing with a mute to the entire section playing with mutes during the indicated length of time.
-
“Stagger Breaths”: take breaths individually and inconspicuously throughout the sustained pitch, providing as continuous a tone as possible.
-
5/4 is always notated as 2+3.

“Art creates an incomparable and unique effect, and, having done so, passes on to other things. Nature, upon the other hand, forgetting that imitation can be made the sincerest form of insult, keeps on repeating this effect until we all become absolutely wearied of it. Nobody of any real culture, for instance, ever talks nowadays about the beauty of a sunset. Sunsets are quite oldfashioned. … To admire them is a distinct sign of provincialism of temperament. Upon the other hand they go on…” - Oscar Wilde, Intentions
Commissioned by Kappa Kappa Psi, Theta Beta Chapter for the Boston University Concert Band
