Guanajuato es un estado con una gran riqueza cultural, histórica y natural que lo potencia con sus dos ciudades patrimonio y sus cinco pueblos mágicos, como el Destino Cultural de México, pero también como un referente en los ámbitos nacional e internacional. El Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato (GIFF) tiene preparadas, en su edición número XVII, actividades inolvidables para los amantes del séptimo arte. Del 25 al 29 de julio en San Miguel de Allende y del 30 de julio al 3 de agosto en Guanajuato capital. El GIFF ya forma parte de Guanajuato, ha echado raíces en dos ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad que son, además, centros de cultura y de historia: San Miguel de Allende y Guanajuato. En esta edición esperamos más de 400 trabajos de jóvenes de diversos países. Los amantes de la ficción, la animación, el cine experimental, los cortometrajes y largometrajes podrán disfrutarlos en 21 sedes donde también se desarrollarán actividades alternas orientadas a la formación de los talentos cinematográficos. Polonia honrará a Guanajuato, como País Invitado, una decisión acertada porque el tema del Festival será “Desplazados” y hace referencia al fenómeno del desplazamiento forzoso del que ese país hermano tiene mucho que contarnos por medio del cine. Para los jóvenes que han decidido dedicar su vida al cine habrá también actividades académicas como talleres y conferencias en las cuales personajes destacados de la industria cinematográfica compartirán sus experiencias y conocimientos. Éstas y muchas otras actividades como las proyecciones especiales de cine de terror, las muestras especiales de nominados y ganadores del Oscar o el XIII Concurso de Guión Cinematográfico, volverán a poner a nuestro estado en los ojos del mundo, con lo que nuevamente podrá mostrar su gran carga histórica y su patrimonio arquitectónico tangible e inigualable. Guanajuato es además, escenario de otros eventos como el Festival Gastronómico “Guanajuato sí sabe”, que en conjunto siguen diversificando la oferta turística del estado y lo posicionan como destino cultural de México. Mucho éxito en esta edición del GIFF y nuestra más cordial bienvenida a los participantes y visitantes.

The state of Guanajuato boasts a wealth of historical, cultural and natural treasures, and together with its two World Heritage cities and five magical towns, not only has it has become “the” Cultural Destination in Mexico, it is a point of reference on the world stage. The Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) is now in its seventeenth year and growing strong. For filmgoers, the GIFF has prepared an array of activities, which will take place between July 25 and 29 in San Miguel de Allende, and between July 30 and August 3 in the city of Guanajuato. The GIFF has become part of the culture of San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, two World Heritage cities where culture and history converge. The festival is expecting over 400 films by directors from around the globe. For those of you who love animation, fiction, experimental, short and feature films, you will have 21 venues from which to choose. What’s more, there will be various activities focused on the building of knowledge in the field of cinema. It is Guanajuato’s privilege to have Poland as its Guest of Honor, who has chosen a fitting theme for this year’s festival, “The Displaced,” in reference to the forced displacement that its countrymen have had to endure—a topic about which Polish filmmakers will have much to say through the medium of film. For the young people who have dedicated their lives to filmmaking, there will be academic activities, including workshops and conferences, in which prominent figures will share their ideas and experiences. Other activities include special screenings of horror films, Oscar nominated and winning films and the Screenwriting Contest. These and many more will place Guanajuato once again in the spotlight, affording it the opportunity to flaunt its stunning architecture and historical legacy. The region has become the stage for many events throughout the year, like the “Guanajuato Sí Sabe” Gastronomy Festival, which together with the GIFF, further expand what the region has to offer as the greatest cultural destination in the nation. I wish the festival great success and I extend a warm welcome to the participating filmmakers and to the visiting film aficionados.

Participar en el Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato como País Invitado de Honor es un orgullo para Polonia. Personalmente para mí significa un reconocimiento a la labor que llevamos a cabo en la Embajada para acercar Polonia y México a través del arte y la cultura. Las películas polacas constituyen, sin duda, uno de los mejores productos de exportación que posee Polonia desde hace décadas. Con las raíces que se hunden en los comienzos del siglo pasado, el cine polaco ha sabido romper los tabúes y mantenerse a la vanguardia del arte cinematográfico mundial, produciendo obras excelentes en tiempos cuando hacer cine no siempre era fácil. Piénsese que gran parte de la historia del cine polaco transcurrió en la Polonia comunista y en la época de la Guerra Fría. Hoy en día ya no hay barreras que separen a Polonia del mundo. Hace 25 años hicimos nuestra transición democrática, hace 15 entramos en la Alianza Atlántica y desde hace 10 años somos miembros de la Unión Europea. En fin, Polonia forma parte del espacio europeo al que aspiró durante décadas. En estos nuevos tiempos el cine polaco se mantiene como punto de referencia del cine internacional y sigue produciendo mensajes valiosos y universalmente reconocidos. Para mí, como Embajadora de Polonia en México, es un honor poder disfrutar del triple aniversario que Polonia celebra en 2014 en la compañía de lo mejor que tenemos: el cine polaco, presentando sus logros en este lugar tan maravilloso como es Guanajuato. Durante el Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato les ofreceremos – contando con la generosa participación de las instituciones polacas: el Instituto Polaco de Cine, la Escuela de Cine de Lodz, la Fundación Cinematográfica de Cracovia, el Archivo Nacional de Cine de Polonia, la Fundación Centro Polaco Audiovisual, – muestras de las producciones cinematográficas polacas recientes y más antiguas, conferencias, talleres y encuentros. Nuestro objetivo es fortalecer las relaciones culturales entre Polonia y México, acercar los creadores de cine de nuestros países, compartir los conocimientos e impulsar coproducciones. Agradezco a los organizadores del Festival la invitación para formar parte de este espacio privilegiado de cultura que se ha creado en Guanajuato a lo largo de los últimos años. Poland is proud to be this year’s Guest of Honor at the Guanajuato International Film Festival. For me personally, this is a symbol of recognition for the Embassy’s efforts to bring Poland and Mexico closer together through the arts. In the past few decades, Polish cinema has undoubtedly been one of the best exports our country has to offer. Standing firmly on the foundations laid over a century ago, the Polish film industry has succeeded in breaking taboos, remaining on the cutting edge of world cinema. It is remarkable to think about the outstanding films that have been produced, when we consider that it hasn’t always been easy: a large part of Polish cinema history took place during the Communist era and the Cold War. Today, the barriers that separated Poland from the rest of the world have been taken down. Some 25 years ago, we made the transition to democracy; 15 years ago we became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; and 10 years ago we were welcomed into the European Union. In short, Poland is now officially part of the European community—something it has aspired to for decades. In this new age, the Polish film industry has become a point of reference in world cinema and continues to produce valuable, universally-compelling messages. As the Ambassador of Poland in Mexico, it is an honor to celebrate these three pivotal anniversaries in the company of the best: Poland filmmakers who present their greatest achievements in such a spectacular place like Guanajuato. During the Festival, there will be screenings of modern and classic Polish films, conferences and workshops, made possible through the generous support of Polish institutions: the Polish Film Institute, the Lodz Film School, the Cracow Film Foundation, the National Film Archive of Poland and the Polish Audiovisual Center Foundation. Our objective is to strengthen cultural relations between Poland and Mexico, to bring filmmakers from our countries together, to promote co-productions and to share ideas. I would like to thank the organizers for inviting us to be part of this exceptional cultural platform in Guanajuato, which has made a name for itself over the years. I invite everyone to come and see the Polish films that are participating this year, produced by a diverse group of filmmakers who have made the trip across the ocean to present their works and share their experiences in the world of cinema.

Embajadora de Polonia en México Ambassador of Poland in Mexico

Estoy muy contenta y honrada de que Sarah Hoch y su gran equipo del Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato hayan seleccionado a Polonia como País Invitado de Honor este año. En nombre de todos los cineastas y productores polacos participantes y del Instituto Polaco de Cinematografía, quiero extenderle las gracias por su muy amable invitación y por la organización de un programa tan amplio y ambicioso, promocionando la cinematografía polaca. La cuidadosa selección de películas polacas que se presentarán durante el festival varía de los archivos del cine mudo a los proyectos más recientes. La numerosa representación polaca consiste en directores polacos de renombre, productores y distribuidores, que todos vienen a Guanajuato con la intención de conocer más acerca de la excepcional cinematografía mexicana, reconocida y admirada internacionalmente, así como para compartir experiencias con sus colegas de América Latina, para presentarles sus nuevos proyectos y buscar ideas y la estética en común. Puesto que hay una gran cantidad de interés mutuo y admiración entre los cineastas polacos y mexicanos, estoy convencida de que el número de proyectos comunes vaya a incrementar tras este encuentro y celebración. Espero que las películas polacas ganen los corazones de la audiencia guanajuatense y que las reuniones entre la industria sean fuentes de inspiración para ambas partes. I am pleased and honored that Sarah Hoch and her great team at the Guanajuato International Film Festival have invited Poland to be this year’s Guest of Honor. The Polish films that have been selected and that will be shown during the festival include a vast range, from the silent films of classic cinema to the latest productions by today’s artists. On behalf of the Polish Film Institute and the participating Polish filmmakers, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude for your kind invitation and for organizing such a broad and ambitious program to promote the Polish film industry. Renowned directors, producers and distributors from Poland have come to this momentous event to learn more about the widely acclaimed film industry of Mexico. Ambassadors of the Polish industry, these individuals have come to share their professional experiences, present their latest projects and seek out ideas and aesthetics that they share with their Latin American peers. And given the mutual interest and admiration between Polish and Mexican filmmakers, I am positive that the collaborations and co-productions will grow in number as a direct result of this grand celebration. It is my hope that these films from Poland will win the hearts of audiences in Guanajuato, and that conversations among industry professionals are a source of inspiration for everyone. I wish all of you a great time at the movies and may Mexican filmmakers be inspired with new ideas to send across the ocean.

El Foro Bilateral realizado dentro del Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato por siete años consecutivos, se ha consolidado como un espacio ya reconocido por profesionales de la industria del cine. Cada año intercambiamos experiencias, problemáticas, expectativas y proyectos en común con países que, por su desarrollo y tradición cinematográfica, constituyen marcos de referencia para compartir lo que hemos aprendido y construido en la cinematografía en México. Este año tenemos el privilegio de recibir a Polonia, una de las industrias de mayor tradición y más respetadas en el mundo, tanto por los autores y obras que son ya un legado para el cine universal, como por las políticas cinematográficas que, con resultados satisfactorios, se implementan actualmente en ese país. Las cinematografías de Polonia y México tienen muchas afinidades, y una de ellas es contar con instituciones sólidas e instrumentos de apoyo por parte del Estado. En ambos países, el cine es considerado una actividad estratégica por los beneficios sociales, culturales y económicos que representa. En Polonia y México estamos comprometidos en perfeccionar y adecuar nuestras políticas cinematográficas y de fomento a la producción, de acuerdo con los nuevos escenarios tecnológicos y de prácticas de consumo audiovisual. Para esta edición el Foro se centrará, a través de tres mesas de trabajo, en temas especialmente importantes para las dos cinematografías: la educación y profesionalización de nuestros cineastas, las experiencias en la coproducción y la distribución de películas polacas y mexicanas en ambos territorios. En ellas estarán representantes de instituciones públicas, productores, directores y distribuidores cinematográficos, que con su experiencia brindarán un panorama amplio y crítico sobre lo hecho hasta, pero sobre todo, de lo que podemos hacer en el futuro. Tenemos el firme propósito de abrir un espacio que trascienda en el corto y mediano plazo en proyectos concretos y en una relación más estrecha y de beneficios comunes. Para ello daremos puntual seguimiento a los acuerdos y ventanas de oportunidad que se presenten a partir de este diálogo que, estamos seguros, será fecundo y amistoso.

The Bilateral Forum, held during the Guanajuato International Film Festival for the seventh consecutive year, has become a recognized platform for film industry professionals. Each year, we exchange experiences, ideas, challenges and prospects with countries that, in light of their backgrounds and film traditions, have become an excellent frame of reference for sharing what we have learned and built within the Mexican film industry. This year we have the privilege of welcoming Poland, with one of the greatest and the most widely respected film traditions, owing not only to the authors and their works—who, today, form part of the legacy of world cinema—but also to the policies that have been implemented and have been rather effective. The film industries of Poland and Mexico share many qualities: both receive government support, through solid institutions and funding programs; and in both nations, film is deemed a strategic medium for its social, cultural and economic benefits. In Poland as in Mexico, we are committed to improving and fine-tuning the policies that affect the film industry and to adapting production in line with today’s landscape vis-à-vis new personal technologies and the way audiovisual content is consumed. This edition of the Forum will focus on issues that particularly affect both industries and will be divided into three sessions: the education and professionalization of our filmmakers; our experiences with co-productions; and the distribution of Polish and Mexican films within these regions. The panels will comprise representatives from public institutions as well as film producers, directors and distributors who, given their experience, will be able to offer a broad and critical overview of what has been done thus far, but most importantly, what we can do in the future. Our goal is to offer a platform for dialogue that will lead to concrete projects in the short- and medium-term, and to develop stronger relations for our mutual benefit. In view of this, we will follow up on the opportunities that present themselves over the course of the Forum, which we believe will be fruitful and an enjoyable experience.

Foro Bilateral México-Polonia Bilateral Forum Mexico-Poland

El Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE) y el Festival Internacional de Cine de Guanajuato, en el que este año Polonia es el País Invitado de Honor, organizan para el 31 de julio el Foro Bilateral de Coproducción México-Polonia. Uno de los objetivos del encuentro es crear un espacio para exponer y dialogar sobre la situación actual de la industria fílmica de México y Polonia, así como abrir oportunidades para negociar sobre temas de interés entre las dos naciones. El Foro Bilateral reunirá a reconocidos productores, directores y distribuidores con el fin de discutir y exponer sobre las complejidades que se presentan actualmente en las áreas de producción y exhibición cinematográfica.

The Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) and the Guanajuato International Film Festival, whose guest of honor this year is Poland, will be hosting the Bilateral Co-Production Forum Poland-Mexico as one of the festival’s film industry activities on July 31. The event is intended to provide a platform to present and discuss the current state of affairs of the film industries in Poland and Mexico, and to offer the opportunity to reflect on topics of common concern between these two nations. The Bilateral Forum will be welcoming prominent film producers, directors and distributors, who will examine the challenges that industry professionals face in the areas of film production and distribution.

Joanna Wendorff-Østergaard | relaciones institucionales internacionales Nacida en Polonia en agosto de 1971, Joanna Wendorff-Østergaard estudió Literatura Americana y obtuvo diplomas de postgrado en Producción Cinematográfica, así como un doctorado en Estudios Culturales. Ha trabajado en esta industria desde 1995, cuando produjo cortos animados para el estudio Anima-Pol de Lodz, del cual también ha sido vicepresidenta y jefa de producción. Ha sido consejera del Instituto de Filmaciones de Polonia y presidenta de la Fundación Polaca Audiovisual. Actualmente es la responsable de Relaciones Institucionales Internacionales del Instituto de Filmaciones de Polonia. Born in Poland in 1971, Wendorff - Østergaard studied modern American Literature at the Institute of English Philology, going on to pursuing post-graduate degrees in Film Production and a PhD in Culture studies. She has been active in the film industry since 1995, producing animation films for Anima-pol Film Studio in Lodz, of which she has also been a Vice president and chief producer. She has been an adviser at the Polish Film Institute and President of the Polish Audiovisual Foundation. She is currently responsible for Institutional International Relations at the Polish Film Institute . El Instituto Polaco de Cinematografía fue fundado en 2005 de acuerdo a la nueva ley de cinematografía aprobada por el Parlamento Polaco. Su principal tarea es proporcionar a los cineastas un moderno mecanismo de auspicio desde el desarrollo de proyectos, pasando por la producción, promoción, distribución y circulación de películas europeas, con un énfasis especial en producciones polacas y coproducciones internacionales.

The Polish Film Institute is the newest film institute in Europe, established in 2005 in accordance with the new cinematography act passed by the Polish Parliament. The institute’s primary goal is to provide Polish filmmakers modern support tools, from the development of film projects and production to the promotion, distribution and circulation of Polish and European films, with a particular emphasis on international co-productions.

Tomasz Dabrowski | Director Tras graduarse de Estudios Germanos y Leyes por la Universidad de Gdansk, Tomasz trabajó en el gobierno regional polaco. Desde 2002 ha estado involucrado con proyectos internacionales en el Centro de Relaciones Internacionales de Varsovia. A German language and law graduate from the University of Gdańsk, Tomasz Dąbrowski worked for the local government and later collaborated on international projects at the Center for International Relations in Warsaw. From 2006 to 2013, he was the director of the Polish Institute in Berlin, where he was involved in major cultural projects aimed at promoting Polish culture, including cinema, in Germany. Since July 2013, he has been the director of Film Commission Poland and is a member of the European Film Academy.

Film Commission Poland is a non-profit organization that was created to promote Poland as an ideal filming location and to promote the Polish film industry as a whole. The commission has three primary objectives: to encourage national and regional companies to attract foreign film productions to work in Poland; to create a consistent marketing scheme to promote the potential of the country’s film industry abroad; and to offer support to foreign filmmakers and companies that come to produce their films in Poland.

Pawel Pawlikowski | Director Estudió Literatura y Filosofía, con estudios de postgrado en Literatura Alemana por la Universidad de Oxford. El realizador polaco comenzó su carrera como documentalista en la televisión británica. A literature and philosophy graduate, with extensive postgraduate work in German literature at Oxford, Pawel Pawlikowski started as a documentary filmmaker in British television. His second feature, “Last Resort,” earned him international critical acclaim at numerous festivals, including Toronto and Sundance, and won the 2001 British Academy of Film and Television Arts award for Most Promising Newcomer in British Film. His latest venture, “Ida,” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and earned the award for Best Film, Actress and Cinematography at the 2013 Gdynia Film Festival.

Ewa Puszczynska | productora Estudió Letras Inglesas en la Universidad de Lodz. Desde 1995 es Jefa de Desarrollo de nuevos proyectos en Opus Film. An English literature graduate from the University of Lodz, Ewa Puszczyńska has been working at Opus Film since 1995, and is the head of new projects. She has produced films, including “Mr. Kuka’s Lessons,” “Spring 1941” and “Zero.” In 2007, she was appointed by the Ministry of Culture as an expert consultant for the Polish Film Institute. Anna Kazejak-Dawid | Directora de cine Directora y guionista de cine originaria de la ciudad de Bytom, Polonia. Cuenta con un notable renombre, particularmente debido a su trabajo en el segmento titulado “Silesia”, parte del drama “Oda do radosci”, el cual ganó el León de Oro en el Festival de Cine de Venecia, en 2010. She studied cultural studies at the Lodz Film School and at the University of Silesia in Katowice.

Their latest production, “Papusza,” explores the story of a legendary gypsy poetess and has earned over seven awards and nominations, including Best Director at the Valladolid International Film Festival.

La Escuela de Cine en Lodz es una de las escuelas de cine más antiguas en el mundo, que pone especial énfasis en el trabajo práctico de su programa de estudios. Lodz Film School direction graduate and lecturer for the past 25 years. Since October 2012, Lodz Film School Rector. Andrzej Munk Prize winner for the film, “Conversation with a Cupboard Man”, which also received distinction at the Venice International Film Festival, Cottbus International Film Festival prize and Special Jury Award at the Festival of Polish Feature Films in Gdynia. Directed numerous plays which were staged at the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Lodz and received many prizes at theatre festivals. He is a long-time member of the Polish Film Academy and the European Film Academy.

Marcin Malatynski | director de Mercadotecnia, promoción y distribución Egresado de la carrera de Economía de la Universidad de Poznan. An economics graduate from Poznan University, in 2002 Marcin Malatynski completed his postgraduate studies in film production at the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Lodz. He has worked as an assistant for the Directing Department at the Lodz Film School, and subsequently, Head of Promotion, Marketing and Distribution. Currently, he is the Head of Film, Television and Theater Production, as the Rector’s Authorized Representative, responsible for the production of over 180 short films made at the school each year.

Joaquín del Paso | cineasta Originario de la Ciudad de México. Dirigió su primer cortometraje a los 15 años, poco después de pisar por primera vez un set de filmación. En el 2007 tomó cursos de guionismo y dirección en la Escuela Internacional de Cine de Cuba, poco después emigró a Polonia, donde obtuvo una maestría en Cine por la Escuela Nacional de Cine en Lodz. Actualmente desarrolla su primer largometraje, filmando también varios proyectos en México, Estados Unidos, Polonia e India. Born in Mexico City, Joaquín del Paso made his first short film at the age of 15, the same year he worked on his first professional film set. In 2007, he took directing and scriptwriting courses at the International Film School in Cuba, and shortly afterwards moved to Poland, where he earned a Master’s in film at the Lodz Film School. He is currently developing his first feature film and juggling several projects, shooting in Mexico, United States, Poland and India.

The Lodz Film School is one of the oldest film schools in the world. Placing particular emphasis on practical work, the school trains directors, directors of photography, animators, photographers, editors, film and television production managers, actors and screenwriters. In addition to the practical workshops, the school curriculum also comprises classes on culture, history and art theory, to expand the scope of the students’ artistic development.

Andrzej Mellin | profesor Es director y maestro en la Escuela de Cine de Lodz, donde dirige cursos y proyecciones para estudiantes de postgrado. Jakub Mikurda | profesor y crítico de cine Estudió Psicología, Filosofía y Producción Cinematográfica. Ha trabajado como crítico, curador de cine, conductor y director de televisión. Ha editado libros sobre cineastas contemporáneos y sobre el surrealismo en el cine polaco. Mikurda fue el ponente más joven en el Congreso de la Cultura Europea en Breslavia, en 2011, y su trabajo como editor ha contribuido a renovar el interés por las teorías psicoanalíticas del cine. A graduate in psychology, philosophy and film production, Jakub Mikurda has worked as a film critic, film curator, television show host and director. He has edited and co-edited books about contemporary film authors and surrealism in Polish cinema. He was the youngest speaker at the European Culture Congress in Wroclaw in 2011. His editorial work has resulted in renewed interest in the psychoanalytical film theory in Poland. He has received three nominations for the Polish Film Institute Award. He currently teaches at the Lodz Film School, where he offers a course on new European cinema.

Kasia Slesicka | Directora y miembro de la junta directiva Estudió Humanidades en la Universidad de Varsovia, con un postgrado en Estudios y Administración Cultural. The Wajda School was founded in 2001 by Andrzej Wayda and Wojciech Marczewski and is based on the ‘Zespoly Filmowe’ model, which focused on team work. Unique across Europe, the program combines education and film production, welcoming the most talented young directors—Polish and foreign—to come here to develop and produce their projects. To date, more than 50 documentaries and feature films and over 200 short films have been produced, many of which have gone on to be selected and awarded at the top film festivals, including the Berlinale, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary, Hot Docs, IDFA, DOK Leipzig and the European Film Awards.

Maria Zbaska | Directora de cine Directora, fotógrafa y guionista de cine originaria de Varsovia. Aleksandra Terpińska | Directora y guionista Directora y guionista de comerciales y cortometrajes. The Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia is better known as simply the Katowice Film School. When it was founded in 1978, it was geared exclusively to television; the move toward filmmaking was part of an initiative to reinvigorate the Polish film industry. Many distinguished Polish filmmakers have given classes at the school, among them Kazimierz Kutz, Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi. In 2000, the school officially changed its name to include Krzysztof Kieślowski, who taught here between 1979 and 1982.

Gutek Film was founded in 1994 to promote independent filmmakers and to distribute their films. The Zubroffka Short Film Festival is an open event that revels in the diversity of the Podlasie region. Michal Socha | animador Artista gráfico y director graduado de la Facultad de Artes Gráficas de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Varsovia, recibiendo mención honorífica del rector de la misma. Sus cortometrajes animados “Stone”, “The Concert” y “Odlot”, fueron exhibidos en una decena de festivales, recibiendo premios y menciones especiales en Lodz, Varsovia y Cracovia, entre otros. Su obra más reciente, “Laska”, fue bien recibida en varios festivales de cine en el mundo, obteniendo premios en los festivales de Annecy, Ottawa, Cracovia, BuSho, Animania y en el Festival Art Directors Club de Europe. Katarzyna Ksiezopolska | diseñadora gráfica Originaria de Varsovia. Se tituló en Diseño Gráfico por la Academia de las Artes de Lodz y ha trabajado en diversas publicaciones importantes. Actualmente es diseñadora e ilustradora independiente. Born in Warsaw, Katarzyna Ksiezopolska studied graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz and has worked for several important publications. She is currently a freelance designer and illustrator.

Zbigeniew Paleta | compositor y violinista Compositor y violinista clásico nacido en Polonia en 1942, desde 1980 radica en México. En este país ha sido compositor para numerosas películas y telenovelas, incluyendo la exitosa trilogía francesa “Tres colores”, de la cual fue director musical. Ganó el premio Ariel por Mejor Canción y Mejor Música por su labor en la cinta “Libre de culpas”. Born in Poland in 1942, Zbigniew Paleta is a classical violinist and composer. In 1980, he moved to Mexico, where he has composed the scores for several Mexican soap operas and films, including the French trilogy “Three Colors.” He won the Ariel Award for Best Song and Best Music for his musical score in “Libre de Culpas.”

Raised in Podlachia, Poland, Borysewicz graduated from the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts. Her graduation animated film “Who Would Have Thought?” has been acclaimed both by audiences and the critics and has received important festival awards in Poland. She was an artist-in-residence in Tokyo in 2012 and in Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart in 2013. She lives and works in Cracow.

Ryszard Ordyński Nació en 1878 y murió en 1953. Ryszard Ordynski fue un escritor y director de teatro y cine. Se graduó de la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad Jagiellonian en Cracovia. Inició trabajando como maestro, pero tenía como pasión escribir críticas teatrales para varios periódicos. Durante sus frecuentes viajes se familiarizó con los teatros de Alemania, Inglaterra, Rusia y Francia.

Film and theater writer and director Ryszard Ordynski lived between 1878 and 1953. Graduating from the Faculty of Philosophy at Jagiellonian University in Cracow, he started out as a teacher, but had a passion for theater, writing reviews for various newspapers. During his frequent travels abroad, he became well acquainted with the theater companies located across Germany, England, Russia and France.

A graduate from the Department of Cinematography of the Lodz Film School, Smarzowski launched his career directing music videos. He debuted as a feature film writer and director with the TV film “The Earlobe” in 1998. He has directed TV series, wrote and directed “The Wedding” in 2004, “Dom Zły” in 2009, and directed “Róża” in 2011. His films have won over 70 awards at a host of film festivals.

Director and screenwriter Kazejak attended the Lodz Film School. Her first films “Pulse” and “You Are There” attracted worldwide attention. This film is a coincidental meeting of people who, for reasons of their own, dislike following the paths set by others. They seek happiness on their own terms, not those dictated by others. It’s about love, or rather how to protect ourselves from it, because love can be greedy, selfish and no good can come of it. La Fundación de Cine Krakow es una organización no gubernamental que se creó en 2003 para asegurar el desarrollo estable del Festival de Cine Krakow, el festival de cine más antiguo de Polonia y uno de los eventos cinematográficos más importantes de Europa. En el 2007, la Fundación de Cine Krakow se expandió a través de la creación de una agencia de promoción, que apoya a cineastas y productores en sus primeros pasos por festivales internacionales. La agencia cuenta con tres programas principales: Polish Docs, Polish Shorts y Polish Animations. Legando alrededor de mil proyecciones en festivales cada año, la agencia logró su meta de facilitar el acceso al cine corto y documental Polaco. Set up in 2003, the Krakow Film Foundation is a non-governmental organization whose main objective is to oversee the management and development of the Krakow Film Festival—the oldest film festival in Poland and one of the most important film events across Europe. In 2007, the Krakow Film Foundation was expanded to include a film promotion agency, which provides support to film directors and producers who are planning to make their first appearance at international film festivals. The agency has three main programs: Polish Docs, Polish Shorts and Polish Animations. Se muestra el proceso de cuando toma la decisión, sus dilemas y lo que piensa sobre la muerte. Quiere contar la historia desde la perspectiva de un hombre que está a punto de morir, interpretar su último papel, que también es su primer protagónico. A famous Polish actor, 80-year-old Jerzy Nowak decides that his body should be used for the benefit of science after his death. The film shows the process of making that decision and the actor’s thoughts about death. He wants to tell the story from a dying man’s perspective and play his last role—his first leading one.

He is finally accepted at the faculty of cinematography, and due to his lack of imagination, he walks around the house with the camera and shoots everything he comes across. After its release, the film caused a stir. Today, the film is considered a classic.

Quieren hacer una película sobre ella, un documental de la mujer, pero ella trata de cambiar la atención de los cineastas hacia el paisaje de alrededor. Janek viene de una villa abandonada en el norte de Argentina, donde su madre pretende ser una maestra. Marcia lucha sola con la crisis familiar, la enfermedad mental de su madre y la ausencia de su padre. Trabajando en plantaciones y una fábrica de ladrillos, él entra en el mundo de la fantasía infantil y es introducido a la amargura de la infancia contaminada por problemas de adultos. El diálogo es escaso, las imágenes y sonidos dan la información necesaria. An intimate story of a friendship between two children from completely different worlds. Janek arrives at an abandoned village in Argentina, where his mother gets a job as a teacher. Marcia struggles alone in the face of her mother’s mental illness and her father’s absence. Working on plantations and a brick factory, Janek enters the world of child fantasy, and is introduced to the bitterness of a childhood that is contaminated by grown-up problems. Dialogue is sparse; the images and sounds provide the necessary information.

Su película debut fue “Themerson & Themerson”. Born in Gdańsk, Szymańska graduated from the University of St. Andrews’ Faculty of Literature. She also has a degree in anthropology. This intimate and powerful short film documents a mother’s painful goodbye, as her baby, along with many other babies, awaits its future in an orphanage.

Este día, 96 personas, entre ellas el presidente polaco y representantes del gobierno, murieron en un accidente de avión cerca de Smolensk. Se encontraban en camino a Rusia para participar en un acto conmemorativo del 70 aniversario de la masacre de Katyn. This short film is a tribute to the events that took place after April 10, 2010, one of the most pivotal dates in modern Polish history. On that day, 96 people, including the Polish president and several government representatives, died in a plane crash near Smolensk. They were on their way to Russia to participate in a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.

El Departamento de Producción de Cine, organiza y lleva a cabo la producción de cerca de 300 proyectos fílmicos al año, lo que hace a la Escuela de Cine de Lodz la casa productora más grande de cine en Polonia. The Polish National Film, Television and Theater School in Lodz was established in 1948 and has become one of the oldest and most prestigious film schools in the world. Since its foundation, it has placed special emphasis on practical work within its academic curriculum. The school is divided into four departments: film and television production, film direction, cinematography and acting. Classes on culture, history and art theory are offered to expand the scope of the students’ artistic development and each program offers practical workshop classes in film and theater production. The students who attend the school are striving to become directors, directors of photography, animators, photographers, screenwriters, editors, film and television production managers and actors. Al irse presentando, estas visiones parecen igualmente familiares para los demás participantes. Individuals take part in a therapy group, which follows the family constellation method. Constellations formed by strangers evoke sequences of images originating in the protagonist’s subconscious. As it turns out, these visions seem equally familiar to all the other participants.

En 2001, Andrzej Wajda y Wojciech Marczewski formaron una escuela de cine basados en el modelo de la Zespoly Filmowe. Se centraron en la eficacia del trabajo en equipo y la colaboración de las generaciones. Único en Europa, el programa combina educación y producción profesional. Como parte de los programas que ofrece la escuela, los jóvenes directores, tanto polacos como extranjeros, desarrollan sus proyectos y a menudo los producen ahí. Más de 50 documentales y películas, así como 200 cortometrajes, se han producido hasta el momento, muchos de ellos han sido seleccionados y ganado premios en los festivales más prestigiosos, como Berlinale, San Sebastián, Karlovy Vary, Hot Docs, IDFA, DOK Leipzig y los Premios del Cine Europeo. Joanna has become an icon of a thoughtful and joyful life, thanks to her blog, which describes her daily life honestly and accurately. She begins the blog when she finds out she has cancer and is given three months to live. She then promises her 5-year-old son, Jas, that she will do her best to survive for as long as possible, and starts writing for him.

Dominga Sotomayor, Katarzyna Klimkiewicz Sotomayor desarrolló en Cannes Cinéfondation su primer largometraje “De jueves a domingo”, ganador del Tiger Award en Rotterdam, en 2012. Ha dirigido cortos como “Noviembre”, “Debajo”, “La Montaña” y “Videojuego”. Klimkiewicz ha trabajando para la Televisión Nacional de Polonia y desarrollado proyectos ganadores en Berlinale y los premios de la European Film Academy.

Sotomayor made her first feature, “From Thursday to Sunday,” at the Cannes Cinéfondation, winner of the TIger Award at Rotterdam in 2012. She has directed several shorts: “November,” “Below,” “The Mountain,” and “Videogame.”A graduate from the Lodz Film School, Klimkiewicz has collaborated with Polish National Television and her films have garnered awards at the Berlinale and the European Film Awards.

The film is a history of the Polish war refugees in Mexico, who after being deported to Siberia by the Soviets, found a safe shelter on the welcoming Mexican soil. This practically undiscovered WWII episode is a story of human solidarity, tolerance and selflessness which resonates its universal values with any audience, regardlesss of their nationality, age, social status or education level.

Under the aegis of the Polish Filmmakers Association, Munk Studio produces debut short and feature films, offering guidance to young artists who wish to make their first film. In the short film section, for instance, there are three programs: 30 Minutes, First Documentary and Young Animation. The primary goal is to ensure that young filmmakers can develop their talents within a creative, supportive and professional atmosphere. Each project is assigned an artistic mentor, who, with the assistance of the Artistic Programs Committee, is there to provide individualized support at every stage of the project. Munk Studio strives to implement the best of the “Zespoly Filmowe” tradition, Poland’s former film unit system: weekly meetings are held to allow the young directors to discuss their ideas and learn about those of their colleagues. Although the young artists are immersed in the world of professional film production, the studio allows for the time required for their creative development. El propósito del Festival de Cortometrajes Zubroffka es ofrecer una plataforma cultural para las personas y sus ideas de este a oeste. Películas hechas por profesionales, estudiantes independientes y realizadores amateur son presentadas en numerosas competencias con un fuerte enfoque en la cinematografía de Europa oriental. Esta parte de Polonia llamada Podlasie, con su capital Bialystok, es descrita como una de las más frías, pero durante el festival Zubroffka, gracias a su enérgica e inspiradora selección de películas y eventos, se vuelve la más cálida región. Miles de asistentes se reúnen cada año para ver unas 300 películas; promueven el cine de Europa del Este, coordinan las proyecciones en el único cine lumiere en Bialystok, organizan conciertos y talleres. The goal of the Zubroffka Short Film Festival is to offer a cultural platform for new ideas, bringing together artists from East and West. Nació en Polonia en 1950. Mellin dirige películas de ficción y documentales e imparte clases en la Escuela de Cine de Lodz. Fue jefe del departamento de Dirección durante seis años; en 2009 introdujo la carrera de Guionismo. Ha sido profesor invitado en el extranjero en la Escuela Nacional de Cine y Televisión en Reino Unido, en la Academia de Cine y Televisión de Munich y la Escuela de Cine de Noruega en Lillehammer.

Born in Poland in 1950, Mellin directs fiction and documentary films and teaches at the Lodz Film School. For six years, he was head of the Directing Department, and in 2009, he introduced screenwriting into the curriculum. He is a guest lecturer, giving workshops at the National Film and Television School in the UK, the University of Television and Film Munich and the Norwegian Film School.

Nació en 1981. Estudió Psicología, Filosofía y Producción Cinematográfica. Fue alumno del filósofo y psicoanalista Slavoj Zizek. Ha trabajado como crítico de cine, curador de cine, editor de una serie de libros de cine, presentador y director de televisión. Ha editado y coeditado libros sobre autores de películas contemporáneas. Ha sido tres veces nominado para el Polish Film Institute Award y ganó la edición polaca del International Young Screen Entrepreneur del Consejo Británico en 2008. Born in 1981, Mikurda studied psychology, philosophy and film production and was mentored by philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek. He has worked as a film critic, film curator, book series editor, television show host and director. He has been nominated three times for the Polish Film Institute Award and won the British Council Poland’s International Young Screen Entrepreneur.

conferencia El especialista y crítico de cine polaco Jakub Mikurda, dará una conferencia ampliamente ilustrada donde resumirá la historia del cine polaco desde su época muda hasta la actualidad. La conferencia pondrá en relieve las tendencias y corrientes más importantes, la Escuela Polaca, la nueva ola del cine polaco, el cine de inquietud moral, cine emigrado, surrealistas y el cine experimental. El material visual consiste en fragmentos de películas, fotografías, carteles y documentos de archivo. Mikurda presentará también un cortometraje que fue producido especialmente para la conferencia que impartirá, se trata de una colección de imágenes icónicas que representan la imaginación colectiva de Polonia en los últimos años. Polish film scholar and critic Jakub Mikurda will deliver a richly illustrated lecture outlining the history of Polish cinema from silent movies to the present day. The lecture will highlight the most important styles and trends—the Polish School, Polish New Wave, the Cinema of Moral Anxiety, Polish émigré cinema, surrealism and experimental film. The visual material consists of film clips, photos, posters and archive documents. As a special feature, Jakub Mikurda will present a found-footage short film produced exclusively for the lecture, comprising a collection of iconic shots that have informed the collective imagination of Poland over the years.

Taller de Niños animado animated Kids Workshop

Taller de Animación para niños, impartido por el reconocido animador polaco Michal Socha y su esposa Katarzyna Ksieżopolska. El taller se impartirá el viernes 25 de julio en San Miguel de Allende y está dirigido a niños de entre 8 y 12 años. El resultado se proyectará en el Auditorio del Estado el viernes 1 de agosto a las 6:00 pm. En el taller, los niños animarán con imágenes una canción. Elegirán una pista musical y cada participante dibujará y diseñará un personaje original, humano o animal, cualquier cosa, otorgándole un atributo o instrumento. Después, todos darán vida a esos personajes a través de títeres articulados hechos con cartón, y los animarán en el set de animación. Cada participante animará dos escenas: en una el personaje estará bailando; y en la otra estará tocando un instrumento musical. Al final editaremos la combinación de cada animación hecha por los niños para tener una pieza final con todos los personajes y la canción que hayan elegido.

The children’s animation workshop will be imparted by recognized Polish animator Michal Socha and his wife, Katarzyna Ksieżopolska, and will be held on July 25 in San Miguel de Allende. It is directed to children between the ages of 8 and 12, and the final animation film will be screened at the State Auditorium on August 1 at 6 pm. During the workshop, the children will produce an animated film to music. They will choose the song and each participant will draw and design an original, human or animal character, along with a musical instrument. The children will then transform their characters into cardboard puppets with movable parts. Next, each child will breathe life into their puppets on the animation set through two scenes: in the first scene, the character will dance; in the second, the character will play its musical instrument. The final footage will then be edited, bringing all of the characters together and adding the selected song.

RALLY UNIVERSITARIO | 48-HOUR COLLEGIATE RALLY

Embajada de la República de Polonia en México

Por segunda ocasión, el Rally Universitario del Festival Internacional de Cine Guanajuato se complace al tener la participación de un equipo internacional, siendo Polonia el País Invitado de Honor, nos valemos de su presencia para conformar la 6ª edición del Rally. El proyecto dirigido por Kasia Boniecka Chyziewicz participará con el guión “Trouvellin”, representando a la Universidad de Lodz. Se ha conformado un equipo de cinco estudiantes originarios de Polonia, a los que se les sumarán cinco mexicanos, ganadores del Rally en años anteriores. Los proyectos participantes nacionales han sido seleccionados entre más de 215 guiones de 26 estados de la República Mexicana. Deberán enfrentar el reto de realizar un cortometraje de seis minutos de duración, en un tiempo límite de 48 horas, con actores de renombre y equipo profesional. Los jóvenes realizadores trabajaron durante cuatro meses en la etapa de pre-producción. En ese periodo recibieron capacitaciones de profesionales de la industria. Su destino final de producción y proyección será Guanajuato Capital. Kasia Boniecka Chyziewicz from the Lodz Film School will be heading the project with the script entitled “Trouvellin.” The members of the international team will include five students from Poland and five Mexican filmmakers who have produced winning short films in previous editions. The Mexican projects were selected among 215 scripts, submitted by students from 26 Mexican states. These teams will be faced with the challenge of producing a 6-minute short film with a professional team, including renowned actors, within a time limit of 48 hours. The teams worked in pre-production for a period of four months, during which time they received training from industry professionals. Their final destination to complete their productions will be the city of Guanajuato. Trouvellin Krzys es un joven polaco que llega a Guanajuato para conocer y visitar a su novia. Sin embargo, la incertidumbre alrededor de la identidad de su misteriosa mujer comenzará a generar en él diferentes reacciones, tanto imaginadas como reales, hasta llegar al momento en el que finalmente la conoce y las expectativas de la realidad superan la fantasía. Krzys, a young man from Poland, arrives in Guanajuato to meet and visit his girlfriend. The ambiguity surrounding the identity of this mysterious woman evokes within him a mishmash of reactions—some imagined, some real—until the moment comes when they finally meet. The reality goes beyond the imagination.
