A WIN GI CORTED LIMITION EDI
Welcome Summer has arrived and we are again very busy. Our new GG03 Post & Go desktop unit has taken up residence for the summer at the Guernsey Information Centre, enabling collectors to purchase underprints of our Post and Go Bailiwick Flower set. Cruise ship passengers coming into port will also be able to collect a set with a welcome message specifically for their cruise ship. August 1st sees the issue of our latest SEPAC stamps depicting aerial scenes of Guernsey not often showcased. To achieve this, we commissioned Elliott Cockett, a young Guernsey-based photographer known as ‘The Drone Ranger’, who was able to capture striking aerial scenes of the island from an elevated position. Local fortifications, Torteval Church, turquoise bays and a wonderful shot of our reservoir all are depicted. 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of Alderney Week, the Channel Islands’ biggest annual festival. The eight-day event in August dates back to 1949 and is one of the highlights of the Island’s summer calendar. The fun and colour of this event is beautifully captured in this latest set of stamps, designed by illustrator Andrew Robinson. This quiet Island, the most northerly of the Channel Islands, comes alive for Alderney Week. Its population of around 2000 doubles with people flocking from all over the world to join in the fun. With over 100 different events taking place, there is something for everyone, from live music and entertainment for the children to wild and wacky events and all night parties.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey has more than its fair share of stunning scenery and, coupled with its fascinating history and rich heritage, there’s no shortage of local landmarks and scenery to feature on our stamps. As a member of SEPAC, the Small European Postal Administrations Co-operation, Guernsey Post has celebrated this year’s SEPAC theme – Spectacular Scenery – with stamps depicting aerial scenes of Guernsey not often showcased and to offer a different perspective. To achieve this, we commissioned Elliott Cockett, a young, Guernsey-based entrepreneur who set up The Drone Ranger, a local aerial photography and video company offering clients something out of the ordinary. The Drone Ranger started out as a part-time project for 18-year-old Elliott, who at the time was completing his ‘A’ levels at Elizabeth College. Demand for his services reached an all time high and, with his exams behind him, he decided to devote all of his time into growing The Drone Ranger’s client base.

“It was my interest in photography that got me into drones - I loved the idea of giving a different perspective to projects,” he said, adding “the commercial potential was always at the back of my mind and I wanted to develop it into a business. I also knew by then that continuing my formal education and going to university wasn’t for me, so I had the incentive to make it work. “As a local with a love for Guernsey’s scenery and landscapes, I was determined to create imagery that showcased the island in the best possible way, especially as the stamps are collected worldwide. I think that an aerial perspective really helps to truly ‘step back and take it all in’, especially as it is an angle that is very new to Guernsey’s culture. “Taking part in this project also reminded me of the joys of working and living in Guernsey. Most of the locations photographed – including the Reservoir and Torteval church - required prior permission from the landowners. Everyone was very obliging, which, in turn, made it such a pleasure for me - and that’s just how Guernsey is.”

That ‘Alderney feeling’ is how the locals describe the magic of this little Island, part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. This tiny Island, closest to France is just three and a half miles long and less than two miles wide and is home to almost 2,000. Many choose to live in this welcoming community for a healthier work-life balance and a gentler, slower pace of life. Often described as the hidden gem of the Channel Islands, Alderney has an ancient history that goes back 5,000 years with one of the best-preserved Roman forts in Britain, Victorian fortresses and WW2 bunkers. Meanwhile, you are never far from unspoiled landscape, fantastic flora and fauna and beautiful un-crowded sandy bays. It’s a place where you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and that is definitely the feeling you get when the Island comes alive and doubles in size during the summer days of Alderney Week.

The eight day event in August dates back to 1949 and has grown to become the Channel Island’s biggest annual festival. It has that nostalgic feel of a traditional seaside holiday with home-grown, old-fashioned fun and games from sandcastle and yard-of-ale competitions to tugs of war and pig racing! The locals who are nicknamed vaques after the cows, or lapins after the rabbits you’ll find hopping about all over the Island, are renowned for their hospitality and encourage visitors to join in all the fun and games, to dress up and dive into the marina with homemade flying machines or build wacky floats to set sail in the Daft Raft Race. That ‘Alderney feeling’ is one you won’t get unless you experience Alderney for yourself, one you won’t find anywhere else and a feeling you won’t forget in a hurry!
