2016 Yearbook

Welcome

A beautiful hardback book containing all stamps, souvenir and miniature sheets of 2016 for both Guernsey and Alderney.

Welcome to our first Philatelic News of 2017. On behalf of the team here at Guernsey Stamps we wish you a very Happy New Year.

This price of the Yearbook is £63.56 - which is the face value of the stamps included. You don’t pay any extra for the book.

We kick off the year with our fourth instalment of our Lunar New Year series: The Year of the Rooster, which has once again been superbly illustrated by Chrissy Lau, although this time the stamps feature gold highlights and red highlights on the limited edition gold foil replica Souvenir Sheet. For our first Alderney issue of 2017 we are thrilled to be able to depict a Channel Island Archipelago Sheet of Alderney & Burhou drawn by gifted architect, Addison Roger Warren. This 1st edition map was originally published 60 years ago and took Roger some 3,000 hours to complete, such was his interest and patience. Our Endangered Species issue this year is in support of WWF and highlights the plight of a small local bird, the Meadow Pipit. Although not critically endangered the decline of breeding pairs has been dramatic enough in the Bailiwick that they are now under the scrutiny of WWF. We will, once again, be attending StampEx in February and, along with the above issues, we’ll be launching our next Post & Go pictorial issue ‘Bailiwick Lighthouses’. The set features six of the most wellknown Bailiwick Lighthouses and marine navigational marks. Available from the Royal Mail Post & Go stand from our GG01 kiosk and from our head office Envoy House kiosk (GG02) in Guernsey. We look forward to seeing you at StampEx and in the meantime please do look at what the rest of our 2017 stamp programme offers.

2016 Davo and Lindner Album pages now available, please order on the stock sheet included or buy online.

SPONSORED HANDSTAMPS Sponsored handstamps are now available. We can produce to your design a handstamp marking a specific event. We will then cancel your Philatelic items for you using this handstamp. This service is available for £50.

Year of the Rooster 2017 NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.70 Issue date: 18 January 2017 Chinese New Year 2017 is the Year of the Rooster, which is tenth in the Chinese zodiac. The Zodiac stems from the similar concept in western astrology and means “circle of animals”. The Chinese zodiac is a systematic plan of future action that relates each year to an animal and its reputed attributes, according to a 12-year cycle. It remains popular in several East Asian countries including China and Japan. According to the Chinese zodiac, people born in the Year of the Rooster are considered to be very observant, resourceful and talented. Roosters are active, amusing and popular among the crowd; they are also talkative, outspoken, honest and loyal individuals. Those born under the rooster sign are happiest when surrounded by others, whether at a party or just a social gathering. They enjoy the spotlight and will exhibit their charm at any occasion. Roosters expect people to listen to them while they speak, and can become agitated if this doesn’t happen.

Presentation Pack: £4.60

‘Roosters’ are typically healthy people. They are active and enjoy sports such as hiking and swimming. Roosters rarely suffer ill health although when they do, they recover quickly. Roosters are more motivated than other animals in the Chinese zodiac, making their careers a priority in their lives. They are considered hard working, multi-talented, and can deal with a variety of jobs.

First Day Cover: £4.90

Those born in a rooster year are loyal and make devoted friends. They always keep their promises and are true to their word. Also available: First Day Cover Souvenir Sheet: £4.90 Limited Edition Uncut Press Sheet: £23.00 Limited Edition Gold Foil Souvenir Sheet: £95.00

1st Edition Alderney & Burhou Map NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.70 Issue date: 1st February 2017

For this special issue we are delighted to be able to depict the 1st edition map of Alderney and Burhou created by gifted architect Addison “Roger” Warren, who, having arrived in Alderney with his family in 1956, quickly made his mark with his concepts and designs. Guernsey Post has been fortunate enough to speak to Margaret A. Warren-Roberts (nee Warren), one of Roger’s two daughters who lives in Alderney, about the impact of her father’s work across the island… “From the nurse’s home at Crabby Bay and the Sydney Herival Wing at the Jubilee Home, to the conversion of a private and adjoining property to the Chez Andre Hotel for Nigel Clarke (now The Adventurers’ Rest), my father’s work is evident across the whole island. His designs were used extensively for other hotel projects, estates and by almost every young family building their homes here in the late fifties to mid eighties, when he retired. “Inaugurated in 1966, my father also designed the Hammond Memorial at Mannez. He was invested with the Order of Timoshenko (the Chairman of Soviet Veterans) in recognition of his contribution to the lasting memorial to all the foreign slave workers in Alderney, during WW2; his family is very proud of his many lifetime achievements. “A year after the inauguration, in 1967, my father proposed The Islander aircraft at a public meeting, held by the Alderney States, when the Heron was due to be discontinued. His intervention paved the way for a safe and reliable (Aurigny) air service on the island. “My father’s great love of steam railways led to him establishing the Alderney Railway from the humble beginnings of the “Molly 2”, the engine that ran between the Admiralty Breakwater and Mannez Quarry. During the mid 1970’s, he became increasingly concerned about the future viability of the mineral railway, which was used less frequently as a means of maintaining the island’s breakwater. He decided that action had to be taken to protect the railway for the future and he came up with the idea of bringing together a group of individuals to form the Alderney Railway Society. It took four years of negotiation with the Home Office to receive permission but, thanks to his unwavering determination, my father was able to realise his dream. It is thanks to him that we have a unique railway, now in its 166th year, which continues to be a great attraction for the island’s visitors. “I am incredibly proud of the huge contribution my father has made to island life and architecture. His legacy lives on and he is still remembered fondly by the young families whom he helped by draughting up the plans they needed to build their own homes, and for the help and advice he gave to them at such an important time in their lives.”

WWF: Endangered Species: Meadow Pipit NEW ISSUE: Set of four stamps: £2.34 Issue date: 15th February 2017

To celebrate the Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis), now classified as an endangered species in the Bailiwick, we have, in collaboration with WWF International, produced a stamp issue with stunning images created by artist Andrew Robinson. For more than 50 years, WWF has focused on finding solutions that save the wonderful array of life on our planet by applying the best science available and working closely with local communities. Saving nature is at the core of what WWF International is all about, and its mission is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth. WWF’s work has evolved from saving species and landscapes to addressing the larger global threats and forces that impact them. This ambitious new strategy puts people at the centre and sees WWF organise its work around six key areas: forests, marine, freshwater, wildlife, food and climate. To achieve this, WWF is working to educate and influence people into making sustainable choices and decisions, including those who work in business and make decisions around the use of natural resources, as well as those working in government and setting policy that impacts nature. There is still a long way to go; WWF’s 2014 Living Planet Report found that wildlife populations of vertebrate species—mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish—have declined by 52 percent over the last 40 years. There is good news, too, as the WWF has played a part in successful wildlife recovery stories from southern Africa’s black rhino to black bucks in the Himalayas. We are very proud to have worked with WWF, which, with close to five million members globally, is undoubtedly the world’s leading conservation organisation that seeks to protect the future of nature.

Guernsey Post and Go Powered by Royal Mail NEW ISSUE: Set of 6 £3.70 Issue date: 15th February 2016

(Illustrations are visual examples only and not necessarily supplied in this order.) The precursors of the lighthouses we know today were fire beacons on hilltops. It is believed that the first lighthouse structure was built in Egypt between 280 and 247 BC standing around 110 metres high. The Romans erected many lighthouse towers in the course of expanding their empire, these included buildings in Dover, in the south of England, where a fragment of the original Roman lighthouse still survives. The structure of lighthouses varies across the world, but they usually consist of a tower, built onshore or on the seabed, serving as an aid to maritime coastal navigation, warning mariners of hazards, establishing their position, and guiding them to their destinations.

Among mariners though, there is often a preference for the reassurance of visual navigation. Lighted marks also have the advantages of being simple and reliable. In addition, vessels without special equipment on board can use them.

From the sea a lighthouse may be identified by the distinctive shape or colour of its structure, by the colour or flash pattern of its light, or by the coded pattern of its radio signal. The development of electronic navigation systems has had a great effect on the role of lighthouses and the powerful lights are becoming superfluous.

The limitations of purely visual navigation led to the idea of supplementary audible warnings. The first sound signals were explosive, with cannon and later explosive charges used. Such signals could be heard up to four nautical miles away. At around the beginning of the 20th century, compressed air fog signals, which sounded a series of blasts, were developed and today modern fog signals are usually electric.

www.guernseystamps.com

From an illumination perspective, wood fires in lighthouses were not discontinued until around 1800, though after about 1550 coal was increasingly favoured. Then a lighthouse could consume 300 tons or more of coal a year. In full blaze, the coal fire was superior to other forms of lighting, but the disadvantage of both coal fires and early oil lamps and candles was the large amounts of smoke produced, which resulted in rapid blackening of the lantern panes, obscuring the light.
