ALDERNEY CHRISTMAS STAMPS GUERNSEY CHRISTMAS STAMPS STORIES FROM THE GREAT WAR: PART 3
NEW
Welcome Once again we have had an extremely busy year with visits to Spring Stampex and the New York World Stamp Show in May along with a full issuing programme. We kicked off with our Year of the Monkey issue, the third in the Chinese New Year series and one that is proving very popular amongst our collectors. After a year’s break we also released another in our Endangered Species series, the Philippine Eagle, once again superbly illustrated by Joel Kirk. Four of our other issues were also wonderfully drawn and illustrated from scratch. Victor Hugo: Toilers of the Sea; Ramsar: Herm; 500 Years of Postal History; and, Alderney’s 950 Years: Battle of Hastings showcased the artist’s talents at their best. We have also issued limited edition products and had an unprecedented response to our Battle of Hastings Uncut Imperforate sheet, the likes of which we have not seen before. This year’s Christmas issues have a touch of sparkle about them: clean and simple in their design, they depict many of the symbols we all associate with the festive season, the Christmas tree, gifts and the snowman to name a few. And finally, we have the third issue in our Stories of the Great War series. This time we focus on the role of the Navy during WW1 and in particular our brave Guernsey ‘Bluejackets’. We do hope you enjoy our latest stamps and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Christmas traditions around the world Celebrating Christmas in the UK includes a familiar festive feast of turkey and stuffing rounded off with Christmas pudding, mulled wine and mince pies. We decorate our homes with candles, evergreen Christmas trees and holly wreaths. But Christmas customs vary the world over; here we take a look at some of the more unusual Christmas traditions from around the globe. Greece In Greece fresh basil is wrapped around a wooden cross, and used to sprinkle water around the house to keep away the mischievous goblins, or Killantzaroi. Whilst we usually exchange gifts on the 25th December, in Greece gifts are given on 1st January. Poland Staying with gift giving, children receive their presents on 6th December, which is St Nicholas’ day in Poland. Norway Whilst British children might listen for sleigh bells and the sound of reindeer hooves on the roof, keeping eyes peeled for Santa’s elves, Norwegian children have two creatures to look out for. First is the Julebukk, a goat-like gnome who brings presents and then there is Jul Nisse, who guards farm animals and plays tricks on children if they don’t leave porridge out for him.
www.guernseystamps.com
Spain Christmas starts on 8th December in Spain, with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and presents don’t come until the 6th January, or Twelfth Night, which is when the Three Kings brought gifts to the baby Jesus.
First Day Cover: £5.28
Germany In British homes Christmas trees are adorned with twinkling lights and decorations, Germans hide a pickle in the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve and the first child to discover it in the morning receives a small gift. Iceland Finally, we turn to Iceland, where children leave a shoe on their bedroom windowsill during the twelve days of Christmas. Each night it is filled with sweets or gifts ready to be enjoyed the next morning.

This year, our stamps feature some of the images we commonly associate with Christmas, from the Christmas tree decorated with tinsel and lights, which grace many homes around the world, to the gifts sitting under it, delivered, as many children believe, by Father Christmas on a sleigh pulled by his reindeer from the North Pole. The legend of Father Christmas can be traced back hundreds of years to the 3rd century and a monk named St. Nicholas - a far cry from the jolly man dressed in red. It is thought that St. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his kindness, it is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside to help the poor and sick. When the Normans arrived in Britain so too did St. Nicholas and he was quickly absorbed into the legend of Father Christmas. During the 16th Century in northern Europe, after the reformation, the stories and traditions about St. Nicholas decreased in popularity and, particularly in England, he became ‘Father Christmas’ or ‘Old Man Christmas’, an old character from stories and plays during the middle ages in the UK and parts of northern Europe. The poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” from its first line, was first published anonymously in the New York Sentinel in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837. However, there are many that believe the true author to be Henry Livingston.
www.guernseystamps.com
Regardless of its author, it is generally agreed that the poem defined and symbolised Father Christmas from the mid-nineteenth century to today: His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;

NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.70 Issue date: 11th November 2016
Our third issue of stamps marking the hundredth anniversary of The Great War commemorates the valiant efforts of the Guernsey ‘bluejackets’ who enlisted in the Royal Navy. As with the first two issues, our research uncovered a wealth of stories and showed how intrinsic islanders were in the war effort. Indeed, they seem to have played a role at all the significant battles and turning points of the war at sea. The heroic young man featured on our 78p stamp is Able Seaman John William Helman who was involved in an audacious raid on Zeebrugge in April 1918. The plan was to scuttle British ships at the narrow entrance to the canal and blockade the deadly U-boat submarine base that harboured there. Guernseyman John Helman was on the crew of the HMS Daffodil and reports show that he displayed great courage and camaraderie in the heat of the battle. So much so that he was included in the ballot for a Victoria Cross and mentioned in the official report in the London Gazette. Sadly, John suffered from the effects of smoke inhalation during the operation and died in Guernsey two years later from pulmonaryphthisis.

His death was not officially recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) who commemorate the men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the war. This was probably because he died at home and the authorities were not notified at the time. However, the dedication of local historian Liz Walton and the Channel Islands Great War Study Group ensured that his ultimate sacrifice was finally acknowledged almost one hundred years after it was made. The Group brought John’s case to the attention of the CWGC, providing copies of his service record, death certificate and the Admiralty reports citing his contribution to the Zeebrugge operation and proved that his death was directly attributed to his military service. John William Helman was accepted for official commemoration in October 2011 and the War Graves Commission erected a headstone on his grave in St Martin’s graveyard on 20 April this year.
