FIRST BIRTHDAY OF PRINCE GEORGE Guernsey Post is celebrating the first birthday of His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge with a se-tenant pair depicting official photographs from the royal christening. Born on 22nd July 2013 at 4.24pm at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington, the official announcements related to the birth of the baby prince, who is third in line to the throne, were made by a series of press releases sent out by Kensington Palace, including a statement on 24 July that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had named their son George Alexander Louis. In what was the first official photograph of Prince George to be released since his christening in October 2013, Jason Bell once again photographed the Cambridges at their Kensington Palace home shortly before their visit to New Zealand and Australia. The eight-month-old Prince is pictured in his mother’s arms while Prince William holds their dog. Prince George is not looking directly at the camera like his parents – but is smiling at Lupo, their black cocker spaniel, which is next to him. Prince George, together with his parents, embarked on his first official royal tour in April 2014, during which time the Cambridges spent three weeks in New Zealand and Australia.

The nine-month-old’s first public engagement of the tour was on 9 April at a playdate at Government House, Wellington, organised by the New Zealand parenting organisation, Plunket. Prince George and his parents were joined by other babies his age, who were chosen along with their parents by the Plunket group to join Their Royal Highnesses for a play date. His other public appearance on the tour was on Easter Sunday, when he met a bilby named after him at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia.

MARINE LIFE II: CRUSTACEANS The second part of our series on Guernsey marine life focuses on crustaceans, a group of animals that includes shrimps, prawns, crabs and lobsters. Around 67,000 species have been identified and, while most crustaceans live in water, a few have evolved to live on land, the most familiar being the humble woodlouse. The distinguishing feature of all these creatures is the possession of a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. Like a full suit of armour, this provides a protective casing for the soft body of the animal inside. The legs and tail sections have joints to allow for movement and the front pair of legs of most crustaceans has evolved into claws for feeding and defence. While the shell keeps its owner safe it does not expand so crustaceans have to shed their old shells in order to grow, a process called ecdysis. It begins with the animal forming a new soft shell beneath the older one that eventually gets so large that the original shell splits.

Sheets of 10 ÂŁ37.30

Prawns jacknife out of their old shells and crabs and lobsters reverse out backwards. In either case the old shell is often left completely intact abeit hollow, right down to the shell covering the eye stalks. Newly moulted individuals are vulnerable until their new shell absorbs water and becomes hard so most stay well hidden for the few hours or days that this takes. Young crustaceans moult every few weeks but this slows to once or twice a year as they age. Lobsters can increase in length by up to 15% during moulting and their weight can be 50% heavier. Most crustaceans can also replace missing legs or claws during moulting. The new limb will be smaller to begin with but over successive moults it will catch up with the others, a truly remarkable ability of this fascinating group of animals. Miniature Sheet ÂŁ3.00

THE LIFE OF IAN FLEMING At the outbreak of World War II, at the age of 31, Ian Lancaster Fleming was commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander RNVR in the Naval Intelligence Division (NID) as Personal Assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiral John Godfrey. A key member of NID 17, he played a critical role in coordinating special intelligence to ensure the smooth running of the British and Allied war machine. It was his wartime experiences that were to provide many of the characters and themes that he was to write about later in his James Bond adventures. Fleming’s first Bond novel Casino Royale, published in 1953, received favourable reviews, and a Bond title was published each year until his death in 1964. From Russia with Love, the fifth Bond novel, is considered a turning point in his literary career. The book won over readers and critics alike with its convincing insight into the world of Soviet espionage, and showing a more rounded James Bond. Sheets of 10 £37.30

Fleming’s books – and his fame – received a significant boost when, in 1961, President Kennedy included From Russia with Love in his top ten favourite books in Life Magazine. Then, in 1962, the first James Bond film, Dr No, was released, starring the unknown Sean Connery. Sadly, Fleming was already ill with heart disease. He had his first major heart attack in 1962, and during his recovery, having been told not to work, he wrote a story for his young son, Caspar, which told of the adventures of a family and their magical car. He named it Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Bond novels and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang have remained in print and have sold all over the world. Fleming has proved to be a master storyteller and his way of writing has proved extraordinarily influential, particularly his impact on thriller writing. “…while I still do a certain amount of writing in the midst of my London life, it is on my annual visits to Jamaica that all my books have been written.” Ian Fleming, How To Write A Thriller. LOVE THE BAILIWICK We are extremely proud of the Bailiwick of Guernsey and are delighted to have created this particular stamp issue to celebrate some of the many facets that make the tiny islands in the English Channel so very special. Working with us on this issue was Chris George, a Guernsey based photographer. Hailing originally from Birmingham, Chris undertook his secondary school education in Yorkshire and Buckinghamshire and it was during this time that his love for photography began, after joining the school camera club aged just 12. After leaving school, young Chris took his first job at a local photography studio in Olney, Buckinghamshire, before moving into press photography working at a regional newspaper, The Bucks Standard in Newport Pagnell. Chris arrived in the Island of Guernsey in March 1979 and says he has never looked back. He has built a successful career in what he is pleased to

say is actually his passion and has to date enjoyed more than four decades in a job that in essence is fun! For the Love the Bailiwick issue we have used Chris’s images of the Bailiwick’s beautiful bays from his ‘Georgie’s Pic of the Day’ collection, spectacular scenery which give a snapshot of the islands’ unique way of life. Within the issue Chris has captured some of the Island’s most popular spots, along with some of the more secret, hidden gems. We caught up with Chris and asked him if he has a favourite spot in Guernsey and he told us;

“If I had to choose one place it would be the view of St Peter Port as you arrive through the pier heads. Combine this with winter sunshine and there is simply nothing more memorable.”
