200th ANNIVERSARY: QUEEN VICTORIA & PRINCE ALBERT 75th ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome Welcome to the spring edition of our Philatelic News Bulletin. We start the season by attending the Essen Show in Germany where, in conjunction with Philagentur, we are delighted to have a stand featuring our small Post & Go DKU (GG03) that will vend the Guernsey Flag with the overprint ‘Messe Essen 9-11 May 2019’, which will be expertly manned by Dean, our Philatelic Manager.

Landings, one of the most remarkable Allied wartime operations. The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune – and termed D-Day - were the landing operations that took place on June 6, 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord. It was a bold operation that eventually resulted in the liberation of France - and later Europe - from Nazi control.

Released on 29 May, our Guernsey commemorative stamps celebrate the births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert 200 years ago. Victoria’s reign marked a period of great cultural, industrial and political change and expansion of the British Empire. Together with Prince Albert, she made Buckingham Palace a powerful symbol of the British Monarchy and also their family home.

Among the British military forces taking part in the D-Day Landings were individuals from Alderney, including William John (‘Kelly’) Barker, Private Charles Edmund Benfield and Signaller George Paltridge.

Also to be released on 29 May is our Alderney issue, which marks the 75th anniversary of The D-day

We would like to thank everyone who attended Stampex in February and we look forward to seeing some of our European customers at Essen. We hope you enjoy these new issues.

Customer Corner Spring Stampex 2019 The Spring Stampex fair took place in the middle of February under beautiful blue skies and unusual warm temperatures. Islington was glowing in the sunshine! As usual we attended and shared the stand with Channel Island colleagues Jersey Post, the Isle of Man and for the first time, the Faroes and Southern Irelands AnPost. Dean Le Clerc, our Philatelic Manager, was accompanied by Christina Goodwin, one of our Philatelic Co-ordinators who was attending for the first time. The stand was located opposite Royal Mail and housed our desktop Post & Go unit (GG03), which vended the Bailiwick Flower designs with the Spring Stampex overprint. This proved to be very popular with our P&G collectors, along with our latest pictorial P&G stamps to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Guernsey Old Car Club, which vended from the exhibition (GG01) kiosk located on the Post & Go stand along with our Guernsey Flag design. As always, we were extremely pleased to see our regular customers and meet many new ones. As the show progressed more and more visitors attended and unusually for us our busiest day was Saturday. Our most popular commemorative issue at the show was our Alderney new issue to mark 120 years since the Sinking of the SS Stella, together with the Post & Go new issue 50th Anniversary of the Guernsey Old Car Club, although all our latest issues were of interest to most. Thank you for those who came to see us - it is always a pleasure to meet our customers in person, and for making the show a success.

200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert

We are delighted to celebrate the births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert 200 years ago with our commemorative stamps. The issue depicts them both individually and as a couple and features images of their marble busts in white against a rich black background, carved in 1855 by Joseph Durham. When researching the imagery to feature on the stamps, we discovered that the first photographic portrait of Prince Albert dates from 1842, while the earliest photograph of Queen Victoria (a double portrait with the Princess Royal) was taken by the painter Henry Collen around 1844. Here are some interesting facts about the royal couple: Victoria moved the royals to Buckingham Palace Before Victoria ascended the throne, British royals had lived at various residences, including St James’s Palace and Windsor Castle. Just three weeks after becoming Queen, Victoria moved into – and ruled from Buckingham Palace. Mastermind of The Great Exhibition Among other things, Albert took an active interest in the arts, science, trade and industry and, together with Henry Cole, he was the driving force behind the Great Exhibition of 1851, with a view to celebrating the great advances of the British industrial age. The event proved to be the most successful ever staged and became one of the defining points of the nineteenth century. The profits were used to create educational buildings including the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall (originally known as Imperial College London) and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The first to wear white on her wedding day Women typically wore their favourite dresses on their wedding day, regardless of its colour. Victoria opted to wear a white satin and laced gown, a tradition that continues today. Albert helped to avert war In the autumn of 1861, Albert intervened in a diplomatic row between Britain and the United States and his influence probably helped to avert war between the two countries. Victoria was multilingual As her mother was German, Victoria grew up speaking fluent German and English. During her education she learnt to speak some French, Italian, and Latin and, when she was older, Victoria began to learn Hindustani. She developed a close friendship with her Indian servant, who taught her some phrases so that she could converse with her servants.

75 years ago, the forces of 13 Allied countries gathered in Britain before launching the historic operation to liberate Europe. Winston Churchill, who was British Prime Minister at the time, described the D-Day Landings as “undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult” operation that had ever taken place. On 6 June 1944 and during the long summer that followed, men from all over the world went to fight in the Battle of Normandy to help liberate Europe from German occupation. Among the British military forces taking part in the D-Day Landings were individuals from Alderney, including William John (‘Kelly’) Barker, Private Charles Edmund Benfield and Signaller George Paltridge. William John (‘Kelly’) Barker Born in Guernsey on 10 April 1925, William Barker – known as Kelly – was going out on fishing boats from a very young age. By the time he was 12 or 13 he worked on the ‘Joybell’, which operated between Guernsey and Sark. In 1941, having lied about his age, he joined the Navy and saw active service in many areas of war. In 1944, he took part in Operation Overlord and was involved with the American landings, for which he was awarded one of many medals. After the war, having spent some time in England, Kelly and his family soon returned home. In 1977, he joined Alderney Electricity until his retirement in 1990. Kelly passed away on 17 November 2002. Private Charles Edmund Benfield Private Charles Edmund Benfield of the 1st Dorsets was part of the first wave of infantry to arrive at Gold Beach (Jig Sector) on D-Day. Having been part of the effort to liberate Arromanches, on 14 June, whilst the 1st Dorsets were attacking through woods, five of their men were killed, five were lost and forty injured - including Private Benfield who was wounded in both thighs by mortar splinters. He was evacuated back to the UK the following day where he received a glowing testimonial on his discharge. Private Benfield was awarded six medals for his involvement in numerous campaigns, including the 1939-45 Star and the 1939-45 War Medal. Signaller George Paltridge George Paltridge served in 4 Commando when his unit landed on Sword Beach to take a strong point and gun battery in Ouistreham. After capturing the emplacements in Ouistreham the commandos joined up with the rest of the 1st Special Service Brigade to reinforce the 6th Airborne Division at the Orne bridges, including Pegasus Bridge. Mr Paltridge was among those wounded and he was sent back to England and spent some time on leave in his hometown of Blackpool before returning to combat. In 2014, Mr Paltridge described the events of 70 years ago as “terrible, but we got through it, we had to do it. It’s a job to explain, very frightening to tell the truth, but it was what we had been training for so it had been expected really and I did what was expected of me.” He passed away in Alderney at the age of 93 in 2016. “John Wilson (floruit 18161830) was certainly the most important figure in [Guernsey’s] architectural development. He was plainly an experienced and sophisticated practitioner when he arrived. Wilson built mostly in stucco - though he preferred to dignify it with the title ‘Roman cement’. He was flexible enough to design in the classical, Gothick, or Jacobethan styles. He was admired by his contemporaries, and is admired again today, but was deeply despised in the interregnum”. Text taken from Book Introduction.
