ALDERNEY COASTAL ECLIPSES GUERNSEY FOLKLORE

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome Summer has arrived and we have been very busy, especially with our new liaison with Visit Guernsey and our Post & Go cruise ship underprints. The Post & Go GG01 exhibition kiosk has been temporarily relocated to our Smith Street Post Office where tourists have the opportunity to purchase a unique stamp product with an underprint welcome message specifically for their ship. With almost 30 different cruise ships expected to visit Guernsey this summer St Peter Port town has been bustling with activity.

ESSEN 2017 Guernsey Stamps recently attended the Essen Stamp Fair in May. We shared a stand with our fellow administration Gibraltar and enjoyed a great spot just in front of Deutsche Post. The show was well organised and well attended with Thursday and Saturday morning being very busy. A lot of our German and Dutch customers visited our stand along with a few dedicated English collectors who travelled over specifically for the exhibition.

We also have two new issues out 19th July with very diverse stamp themes. Our first, Guernsey Folklore, explores the rich and interesting history of legends, stories and superstitions associated with the island of Guernsey. The illustrations were commissioned by Guernsey Museums for an exhibition named ‘Guernsey Folklore – Old Tales and Ancient Beliefs from the island’s past’ and were designed by artist David Wyatt and depict just a few of the fascinating folkloric tales. At one time folklore and superstition were very real to most Guernsey people and these tales are full of insights into the island’s past and the natural world around them. Our Alderney issue marks this year’s world solar eclipse, one of nature’s most striking celestial events. When the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned in the same plane and the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially or completely covering our closest star, the resulting eclipse is always an awe inspiring event. On 21 August 2017 North America will be fortunate enough to witness an eclipse of the Sun. Millions of observers outside of the path, which stretches from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, will be treated to a partial solar eclipse where the Moon covers part of the Sun’s disk, including Alderney and Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

With the recent release of our Europa Castles issue, visitors to our stand were able to purchase the new 2017 Europa stamps. Also proving very popular were the WWF Endangered Species Meadow Pipit issue released in February and the Herm Ramsar set, with the Augmented Reality video, issued in 2016. It was a great pleasure for Dean, our Customer Services Manager, to meet collectors and colleagues from the Philatelic world and we thank everyone who came to see us.

Our specially produced heat sensitive stamps reveal information and the full sun (removing the eclipse) upon coming into contact with warm hands.

The island of Guernsey has a rich and interesting history of legends, stories and superstitions, and to mark the creation of a new Folklore Gallery at Guernsey Museum, Guernsey Post has produced a wonderful series of stamps utilising the illustrations designed by artist David Wyatt for the exhibition, which depict just a few of the fascinating folkloric tales. The Gallery is named Guernsey Folklore – Old Tales and Ancient Beliefs from the island’s past, and we spoke with Social History Curator at the Museum, Matt Harvey to find out a little more about the rationale of the exhibition. “Folklore is a wonderful subject. It means different things to different people. For some it simply means imaginative tales of the supernatural that have been told to scare children. To others it contains insights into how our ancestors thought, what they believed, what they were afraid of and, in some cases, things that they may actually have seen. There is a belief that some tales may actually be recollections of factual or historical events that have occurred much earlier in time. These would have been recounted by word-of-mouth across numerous generations of people. Unsurprisingly, some of the facts may have been lost over the centuries and certain elements of the stories ‘embellished’ – but often the essence of the original event can still be elicited. Folklore is also full of insights into areas like how our ancestors interacted with the natural world around them. For example how they used folk ‘remedies’ to cure illness or disease. In some cases such treatments had no medical foundation whatsoever, but there are others that modern research has now shown do have active and effective components. At one time Folklore and superstition was very real to most Guernsey people. The new gallery at Guernsey Museum it is a reflection on how intertwined it folklore was in the lives of our own ancestors”. Illustrations commissioned and supplied by Guernsey Museums & Galleries.

Solar eclipses are some of nature’s most striking celestial events. They occur when the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned in the same plane and the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially or completely covering our closest star. To mark the next total solar eclipse on 21 August 2017, when all of North America will be fortunate enough to witness an eclipse of the Sun, we’ve depicted six coastal locations that will be treated to a partial eclipse, including Alderney. These specially produced heat sensitive stamps reveal information and full eclipses upon coming into contact with warm hands. The total eclipse can be witnessed by anyone within the path of totality. A relatively thin ribbon around 70 miles wide, the path will cross the U.S. from West to East. The first point of contact will be at Lincoln Beach, Oregon at 09:05 Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). It will cross through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. The total eclipse will end near Charleston, South Carolina at 2:48 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). A total eclipse is a happy accident of nature: the Moon’s diameter and distance from Earth make its relative size just big enough to cover the Sun. A total eclipse begins as a hardly noticeable fragment out of the Sun and then, over the next hour or so, it widens and eventually consumes the Sun, turning day to night. This state of totality can last as long as seven and a half minutes, although it is usually less than that.

During totality, the only visible part of the Sun is its beautiful corona, the normally unseen outer atmosphere. When the Sun begins to reappear, there is usually a dazzling glow in one spot along the corona that creates the ‘diamond ring’ effect. Within about an hour, daylight is restored.

Souvenir Sheet £4.06

Eclipses happen only during the new Moon phase, when the Moon moves to the side of Earth facing the Sun. Since the Moon orbits Earth at a slight angle, the three bodies only occasionally line up on the same plane to create an eclipse.
