ALDERNEY CHRISTMAS STAMPS GUERNSEY CHRISTMAS STAMPS STORIES FROM THE GREAT WAR: PART 4 70th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF THE QUEEN & PRINCE PHILIP
www.guernseystamps.com
NEW
Welcome Another busy year draws to a conclusion with our final four issues for 2017. We launched our programme with the Year of the Rooster along with a wonderful WWF endangered species issue featuring the Meadow Pipit and the Alderney & Burhou Map. We attended two shows - Spring Stampex, where our extremely popular Post and Go Bailiwick Lighthouse set was released, along with Essen in May. We were very pleased to see both loyal and new customers during these exhibitions. Some very traditional features in Guernsey have been showcased during the year from the Guernsey Jumper, fascinating folklore and our historic Castle Cornet. This November our Christmas issues feature two popular carols, The Holly and the Ivy for Alderney and Good King Wenceslas for Guernsey. Both carols have been superbly illustrated in a storybook fashion by Keith Robinson. Carols have been part of our festive tradition since the Middle Ages. Today we usually think of carols as songs to celebrate Christmas, but originally ‘to carole’, meant ‘to dance’. Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has really survived. On 20th November 2017, HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary marking a milestone 70 years of marriage. We are honoured to commemorate this wonderful occasion by depicting images that capture key elements of their life together over the decades. The final issue is our fourth set of stamps commemorating the centenary of WWI, which explores Guernsey’s links to the Great War in the Air. At the outset of the conflict, aircraft were viewed simply as a tool for reconnaissance but by 1918, generals viewed them as a key part of their strategies. We do hope you have enjoyed a stamp programme this year and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Guernsey: Good King Wenceslas NEW ISSUE: Set of seven stamps: ÂŁ4.45 Issue date: 8th November 2017
Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were pagan songs that were sung during winter solstice celebrations, rather than Christmas carols as we know them today. Early Christians took over the pagan solstice celebrations for Christmas and gave people Christian songs. However, these were not particularly popular as they were written and sung in Latin. By the Middle Ages, most people had lost interest in celebrating Christmas. In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi revived an interest in Christmas and in the singing of carols. Many of these were not based strictly on scripture, but were light-hearted stories sung by traveling minstrels that changed from town to town to suit different communities. Rarely sung in church, the music resounded from the streets and in people’s homes. Carols fell from favour after the Reformation of the 16th century because they were considered frivolous and were rarely sung in churches until the 1880s when EW  Benson, Bishop of Truro, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury, drew up the format for the Nine Lessons and Carols service, which has remained in use ever since.
www.guernseystamps.com
Although Christmas has been celebrated in song for many years, most carols in use now are less than 200 years old. Only a handful, such as Good King Wenceslas, remind us of more ancient yuletides. Written by The Reverend Doctor Neale, who also wrote O Come, O Come Emmanuel (1851) and Good Christian Men, Rejoice (1853), Good King Wenceslas has an important message about being charitable at Christmas. No matter what style of music a person may choose to enjoy the rest of the year, the traditional Christmas Carol breaks through many musical preferences and barriers and is universally recognised and enjoyed by many people around the world.

Alderney: The Holly and the Ivy NEW ISSUE: Set of 7 Stamps ÂŁ4.45 Issue date: 8th November 2017
Evergreen decorations play a major part in many winter and Christmas festivities. The Christian festival of Christmas falls at the time of ancient pagan feasts, which celebrated light over darkness and was referred to as the winter solstice. Pagans believed that evergreens in winter celebrated new growth and helped ward off evil. These traditions have, over the years, merged with Christian celebrations and today the use of holly, ivy and other foliage is still very popular. The evergreen plants we use to decorate our homes often have some Christian symbolism linked to them. The prickly leaves of the Holly bush for example, can be seen to signify the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when he was crucified, with the berries representing are the drops of blood shed. Ivy, which has to attach itself to something for support as it grows, might signify how God supports Christians. Laurel signifies victory over persecution and suffering; pine and yew represent immortality, whilst cedar signifies strength and healing.

Pack: £5 Presentation
Also available: Sheets of 10: £44.50 One particular form of evergreen decoration is the Christmas wreath. There is evidence of pre-Christian communities using wreathes with lighted candles during the cold and dark days of December as a sign of hope of the future warm, sunlit days of Spring; but by the Middle Ages, Christians had adopted and adapted this tradition and used Advent wreaths, made from various evergreens, to signify continuous life as part of their spiritual preparation for Christmas. Christmas wreaths as we know them today, might actually have started life as kissing boughs which were popular in the UK before Christmas trees were introduced. The kissing bough was made of five wooden hoops in the shape of a ball. The hoops were covered with Holly, Ivy, Rosemary, Bay and Fir or other evergreen plants, with red apples hung inside and completed with a bunch of mistletoe. First Day Cover: £5.65 In modern times it is traditional to take down the evergreen decorations on January 6th, but during the Middle Ages, greenery was left hanging up until early February!

Stories from the Great War
The Channel Islands Great War Study Group This year, we are issuing the fourth edition of stamps commemorating the Channel Islands in the Great War. The research that we have undertaken for the series has been greatly helped by the work of The Channel Island Great War Study Group and so we would like to take this opportunity to thank them and to bring their efforts to the attention of our followers.
Q: What has been the most rewarding thing about being involved in the group? A: One of the most rewarding aspects of group membership is answering queries from families about what happened to their relatives in the First World War. People then often share family photos and documents, which helps make the research findings more personal.
The Group was set up in 2005 and one of the founder members Liz Walton, whose Aunt (Ada Le Poidevin) was featured in Issue One, has played an integral role. We met up with her to find out more.
Q: What is the Group’s greatest achievement to date? A: There are two main achievements: firstly, the website itself, which makes the results of members’ research freely available to all and it is now widely used by individuals and institutions as a resource. Over sixty informative journals covering a wide range of topics are also available.
Q: How did the group come about? A: The founder members belonged to the Western Front Association and the original idea was to form a Channel Islands branch. However, for various reasons it was decided that an independent online study group would work better. The aim of the group is to improve understanding and knowledge of the impact of the Great War on the Channel Islands and their people.
www.guernseystamps.com
Secondly, the creation and maintenance of Rolls of Honour and Service for both Bailiwicks as neither existed before in such a comprehensive form. Men who were not named on other memorials have been found and added. Finding those who were not
recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at the time of their death has been an important part of our work and we have been able to ensure that these men are now commemorated properly.
Sheets of 10: £40.60
5. How can people get involved/support the Group? There is no membership fee and the group website at www.greatwarci.net is open to all. New information continues to be added to the site on a regular basis and any enquiries can be made there. We also have a very active Facebook group.

70th Wedding Anniversary of the Queen & Prince Philip NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £4.06 Issue date: 8th November 2017
On 20th November 2017, Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary marking a milestone 70 years of marriage. Here, we look at how The Duke of Edinburgh has supported The Queen and how he has remained a devoted companion or ‘Consort’ to Her Majesty in her official duties: Over the decades, His Royal Highness has supported The Queen in her role as Head of State and has accompanied Her Majesty on all her Commonwealth tours and State Visits overseas, as well as on tours and visits to all parts of the United Kingdom. The Queen has spoken about Prince Philip with affection and, during a speech at a celebratory lunch to mark their Golden Wedding at London’s Guildhall in 1997, Her Majesty said: -

“He is someone who doesn’t take easily to compliments. He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know.” Prince Philip has also praised The Queen, and once said: “You can take it from me that the Queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance.” In a letter to his soon-to-be mother-in-law following their engagement, the Prince also spoke of his love for the Queen, writing: “I am sure that I do not deserve all the good things that have happened to me…. To have fallen in love completely and unreservedly.”
