ALDERNEY: A CHRISTMAS CAROL

PRINCE CHARLES 70TH BIRTHDAY

Welcome Our final four issues of 2018 bring us to the end of another busy year. The Christmas issues feature two popular Christmas stories, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for Alderney and The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A Hoffmann for Guernsey, both beautifully illustrated by Andrew Robinson. Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and the four ghosts are all depicted in this Alderney issue; the Nutcracker, better known as a ballet, depicts some of the key highlights of this Christmas story. On the 14th November it is the 70th birthday of HRH The Prince of Wales. We celebrate the occasion with our first issue dedicated to The Prince with a wonderful set of photographs taken throughout The Prince’s active life. Our final Stories from the Great War set is dedicated to the WWI Memorials located within the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Each stamp carries a pair of letters (shown in red) taken from six memorials from around the Bailiwick. Placed together, they read: ‘LEST WE FORGET’! It has been a very interesting year and our stamp programme has offered a wide variety of topics. We opened the stamp programme with the Year of the Dog along with our 12th Endangered Species miniature sheet and for Alderney, the celebration of 50 years of The Wombles. We attended two shows, Spring Stampex and Essen, where we showcased our new Post and Go Desk Top Unit. It was great to see some of our regular and new customers during these exhibitions.

Born in Konigsberg, the German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was one of the major figures of European Romanticism and became one of the best known and influential authors of his time. He wrote tales of the fantastical and uncanny in a manner arguably unmatched by any other Romantic writer; his fantastical writings made an enormous impact on composers in the 19th Century. One of his best known works, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written for his children, nephews and nieces, brilliantly captures a child’s wonder at Christmas. Since its publication in 1816, it has inspired hundreds of artists and adaptations, including a lighter version by the French writer Alexandre Dumas.

In 1892, Dumas’ version of The Nutcracker was turned into a ballet, created by Marius Petipa and Lev Inavov with an original music score composed by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It was first performed at the Marinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1892. The Nutcracker did not enjoy great success at first, although Tchaikovsky’s music eventually did. Today, The Nutcracker is one of the best-known ballets and is performed around the world, complete with its enchanting images of sugar plums and nutcrackers, mistletoe and the Kingdom of the Dolls. Did you know? * Hoffmann was actually named Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, but he changed the Wilhelm to Amadeus out of admiration for the composer Mozart. * Hoffmann wrote and composed music, including the ballet Arlequin (1811) and the opera Undine, performed in 1816. * He studied law at the University of Königsberg, and by 1800 he had become a court official with the Prussian government in Berlin. Hoffmann continued to serve as judge until 1822, the year of his death.

Charles Dickens: The man who created characters with more than Bah! Humbug! Charles Dickens, widely considered the greatest English novelist of the Victorian era, had a great talent for creating characters we’ll never forget! His stories depicting early Victorian London have delighted readers, listeners and audiences for generations and have inspired adaptations in every artistic genre. Dickens, who was also a well-known philanthropist, drew on his own experiences as an impoverished child forced to work in a factory when his father was sent to prison for not paying his debts. He sympathised with the poor and was keen to bring attention to the hardships they faced. He wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843 after having seen the conditions for the manufacturing workers in Manchester. Despite being a miser and a mean employer Ebenezer Scrooge, the protagonist, remains one our favourite Dickens’ characters. Scrooge can’t stand Christmas, won’t celebrate it with his own family or give to charities collecting for the poor at this time of year. He’s also completely unaware of the poverty in which his poor employee, Bob Cratchit lives with his crippled son “Tiny” Tim. The ghosts who visit him on Christmas Eve help to show him the error of his ways, what he’s missed out on in the past and what he faces if he doesn’t change. He wakes up repentant on Christmas Day having found the spirit of Christmas, that of giving and being kind to one another.

The novel took Dickens just six weeks to write and was an instant success, selling more than 6,000 copies. Readers emphathised with his characters, so much so that one American entrepreneur is believed to have given his employees an extra day’s holiday. Dickens published fifteen novels including other well-known classics, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and David Copperfield, the latter considered to be his most autobiographic. Dickens died on 9th June 1870 at the age of 58 and was laid to rest in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey.

GUERNSEY

As The Prince of Wales celebrates his 70th birthday on 14 November, we are reminded of the extensive work His Royal Highness carries out for charities and organisations worldwide, with birthday celebrations including a party to honour the work closest to his heart, with friends from more than 400 charities. Although His Royal Highness is Heir to the Throne, The Prince does not have a constitutional role. However, with the support of his wife, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Prince works hard to make a positive difference in the UK and internationally. For over 40 years The Prince of Wales has been a leader in identifying charitable need; establishing and driving forward charities in order to meet those needs. His Royal Highness has developed a wide range of interests and is patron or president of more than 400 organisations, focusing on topics ranging from the environment to youth opportunity, food sustainability, architecture and faith. In addition to The Prince’s Charities, His Royal Highness also founded The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation in 1979, a grant making body that supports a wide range of causes, primarily

the built environment, responsible business and enterprise, young people and education, and global sustainability. The Foundation also seeks to nurture initiatives and projects that fall within these primary areas of interest. The private pursuits and interests of The Prince of Wales are just as wide reaching as his concerns – including the welfare of young people and the disadvantaged, music and the arts and the quality of the built environment - to which he devotes his public life. In recognition of The Prince’s interest in watercolours – His Royal Highness paints whenever his schedule allows – Buckingham Palace will host a special exhibition to mark his milestone birthday. It has been announced that the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace will include an art display of over 100 works featuring a selection of the Prince’s favourite works of art from the Royal Collection alongside works created by young artists supported by three of his charities – The Royal Drawing School, The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and Turquoise Mountain.

Stories from the Great War Part 5

This issue of Stories from the Great War brings to a close five years of study into the role played by the people of the Bailiwick in the conflict. It has been a fascinating journey for me as a researcher and a designer and I feel very privileged to have had this opportunity. It is fitting that this last issue should honour the brave islanders who stepped into the fray and set down their lives for king and country. Memorials, commemorative stones, wall plaques, headstones, stained glass windows and gardens are maintained in the nine parishes of Guernsey as well as on the sister islands of Sark and Alderney to remember this lost generation. I have chosen six memorials to symbolise their sacrifice and to reflect the stories that have been told throughout this series. Pairs of letters were found in each of the memorials to spell out the tribute ‘Lest We Forget’ - a phrase that passed into common usage following the War and that sums up the duty 46p Stamp: RGLI, St Peter Port. 62p Stamp: Post Office ROH. 63p Stamp: Elizabeth College ROH. 76p Stamp: The Alderney Stone. 85p Stamp: Guernsey War Memorial. 94p Stamp: St Peter’s Church, Sark.

of remembrance that we carry. Finding the six pairs was something of a mission but I felt strongly about the concept and just knew that it would work out. This project has been moving and humbling and I have developed a real affinity with the young men and women I have discovered. Far from feeling like remote figures from the past, they have come alive in my imagination and I hope that this comes across in the work. These young people stepped out of relatively ordinary lives into a remarkable set of circumstances and proved to be a credit to their island homes. Time and again they were singled out as being brave, spirited and honourable. As well as being thankful for their sacrifice, we should also feel incredibly proud of them. Stories from the Great War Uncut Imperforate Press Sheet: £40.00

ED LIMIT N IO EDIT 0 OF 30

As part of a five-year programme to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, we undertook considerable research involving interviews with relatives of some of the individuals we have featured on our stamps, reviewed archive copies of the Guernsey Press and benefitted from the outstanding work of the Channel Islands Great War Study Group. The five issues from the Stories from the Great War series are: Part 1 – The Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, issued 11.11.14 Part 2 – The Post Office Rifles, issued 11.11.15 Part 3 – The Guernsey Blue Jackets, issued 11.11.16 Part 4 – The Great War in the Air, issued 8.11.17 Part 5 – Lest We Forget, to be issued 8.11.18 We have produced two limited edition products to complement the series; a folder to house the complete series of stamps from our Great War series; and an uncut imperforate sheet displaying all the stamps on one sheet (see example above). The souvenir folder which opens out into a cross is a memorial in its own right, it lists the 1,500 brave individuals who fell during the conflict and also contains a miniature replica of the RGLI flag that hangs in the Town Church, St Peter Port, Guernsey. During this project we have unearthed a wealth of information about the many men and women of the Bailiwick who stepped forward to serve for King and Country. It has been an honour to tell their stories.
